The Earl of Excess

Rate this book
A British officer’s life is saved when a young woman and her dog risk their lives and rescue him from beneath dead bodies, while trying to escape the New Orleans battlefield before shooting begins.

Welcome to book 1 in the new Rakes of Mayhem series from bestselling author Anna St. Claire!

Colonel Matthew Romney, a favored son with the British military, is gravely wounded during the Battle of New Orleans. With most available British forces dead and his weak pleas for help muffled beneath the dead soldier he lies below, the British report him missing in the aftermath.

Bethany Phillips and her dog visit the Villeré Plantation’s gardens searching for herbs and food and unexpectedly become caught in the crossfire of grapeshot and cannon fire and forced to take cover until the battle ends. When the smoke clears, Bethany follows the sound of a man’s moans and pulls him from beneath a pile of dead soldiers being readied for a mass grave. Bethany saves Matthew’s life but, in doing so, threatens her heart and her own life.

Against all odds, sparks fly between Matthew and Bethany. A hired investigator for his father finds Matthew and encourages him to journey home. Matthew and Bethany leave the safety of her home and travel a dangerous path through the wilderness of America and across a ravaged, war-torn ocean to reach his family.

Can their romance survive the dangers and uncertainty that follow them?

Who knew I’d become an author? Not me. But when the opportunity knocked, I answered the door and welcomed it in. I approach life with as much positivity as I can—celebrating the hits and laughing at the misses. Nothing worthwhile is easy, and that includes everything in my life. But I have much to smile about—my lovely mother, a beautiful daughter, two precious granddaughters, my adorable dogs, and my sweet husband of over thirty years. He has always supported me—including uprooting to move to the other side of Charlotte, N.C. for a life change, just when we thought we were settled.

If settled means not going after my dreams, then I never want to be settled. I give my all to things I enjoy—and that includes writing. In 2021, I hit the USA Today Bestselling Author list, and recently, two of my books were named RONE Finalists!

I love to express myself to the point that my daughter avoids going to the movies with me because I’m that woman in the row in front of you who gleefully munches her popcorn and laughs at every hilarious scene. Loudly. Besides my family, I love chocolate, popcorn, laughter, and animals. I love animals so much that I frequently sprinkle them in my stories as secondary characters. They usually steal the show! British and American history have always interested me, so writing historical romances set in the U.K. and the US is where my passion is.

When I was barely three years old, my parents divorced, and my mom moved my sister and me from New York to South Carolina to live near her parents. Juggling a full-time job and full-time school, my mother became my first genuine hero—she never waved the white flag when things were tough. And things quickly got tough. My grandmother, who helped care for my sister and me while my mother worked, became ill with cancer, and didn’t survive the surgery, dying before I was seven. Losing Grandma devastated me. She read to me and taught me to read before I started first grade. I credit her for inspiring my love of reading, and I credit my mother for encouraging me to turn my ideas into stories.

When I was ten, my neighbor gave me her book club copy of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind and it remains one of my favorite books. But it was Kathleen Woodiwiss’ Shanna and Ashes in the Wind, that hooked me on historical romance and sparked my dream of becoming a published author.

While I primarily write Regency Romance, I enjoy almost any period in American and British history.

The Earl of Excess is the first book in The Rakes of Mayhem, a new historical romance series by Anna St. Claire. The story begins when Bethany saves the life of a British soldier, an act punishable by death should she be caught. Bethany cares for Matthew for weeks, diligently nursing him back to health. However, when it appears that someone might know of Matthew’s location, Bethany decides to take him to her aunt and grandmother. Not fully healed and blinded in battle, Matthew can’t deny his growing feelings for Bethany. But can he convince her that his feelings are true? And will he ever be able to return home?

This is an interesting historical romance that takes place in war-torn Louisiana. Rich with culture and history, the story offers a unique outlook on life at that time. Matthew is a British soldier, and Bethany is a citizen of Louisiana, so their experiences are quite different. It’s interesting to get both perspectives throughout the story. I also really liked the integration of customs, landscapes, culture, and cuisines of the time. It was fascinating to read about the different foods and traditions, as well as the varied opinions about the war.

Bethany is a great protagonist, as is Matthew. Bethany is independent, brave, and strong, and she has a generous and selfless spirit. She is her own person, and she defies the norms of her time. Matthew is a long way from home, and he goes through so much! Honorable, dependable, and adaptable, Matthew shows strength and sincerity in all that he does. They make a great pair, and their chemistry is strong from the start. Though they begin as strangers, they quickly become friends, which leads to more. The way that they care for, protect, and support each other is wonderful.

I always love animal companions in books, and Bethany’s dog, Dandie is delightful! She’s an adorable dog that’s also a great judge of character. She’s also super intuitive and seems to understand more than one would expect of a canine friend. I also really enjoyed Bethany’s grandmother and aunt. They are women ahead of their time, and the wisdom, understanding, and acceptance they show are admirable. They, as well as several other minor characters in the story, are well-developed and interesting.

The plot is well-paced and filled with action and adventure, and there is never a dull moment in the story. Between the battle, the treacherous trip to Bethany’s grandmother, and their experiences once they reach their destination, Bethany and Matthew don’t experience a moment’s peace. Even their journey after leaving Bethany’s grandmother is riddled with obstacles and perilous situations. I do wish the end didn’t feel so rushed, as their story in the epilogue sounds as exciting and adventure-filled as the rest of the novel. It almost felt like it could be made into its own novel.

Readers who enjoy entertaining and engrossing historical romances with great side characters and a sweet love story will enjoy The Earl of Excess. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Dragonblade Publishing, and Anna St. Clair for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

This is a sweet romance between a wounded soldier and the woman who drug him off the battlefield and proceeded to nurse him back to life. With such a beginning it’s hard to imagine the author being able to create comparable conflicts for the H/h - never fear though the author puts Colonel Matthew Romney, lord of Longueville, the Viscount of excess, through numerous problems in this story. 😉

I thought the author did a good job with the slowly evolving relationship between Matthew & Bethany. The transition between “patient and caregiver” to two people brought together by circumstances and falling in love, was smooth and realistic. I really enjoyed that Matthew was not afraid of falling in love nor showing his emotions.

“You are beautiful—inside. My fingers tell me that you are such on the outside, too. However, I have seen the beauty of your heart.” … “All he knew was the desire to be in her company. He needed her near him—not from gratitude. It was from something deeper . . . deeper than an attraction. He squeezed his useless eyes shut and felt hot tears escape, wishing they could release his fears and frustration.”

I enjoyed the secondary characters and how they added to the story and were not just space fillers. Dande was a special treat throughout the story. There were some aspects and situations in the story that I am not sure what the purpose of them was but who knows maybe they are included in future books.

If you are a fan of a lot of intimate encounters between the H/h you will likely be disappointed by this story. There are several kisses, very limited amount of petting, and one intimate scene included. This did not take away from the relationship aspect and romance of the story.

I do wish the time the H/h were back in England had been expanded on as the reader is sort of left hanging.

I loved the setting in America, the author’s descriptions were brilliant especially of Matthew & Bethany’s journey to her Aunt's house. I also loved the tension throughout the book, would Matthew be found & handed over to Jackson, would he recover from his injuries, his blindness & then yellow fever? I also loved the attraction between Matthew & Bethany, which just grew & grew. A very well written action packed book that had me on the edge of my seat, add a slow burn romance, more than a dash of suspense & I was one very happy reader. I would have loved for it to have been longer so that their journey to England could have been more detailed. I look forward to the rest of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Found on a battlefield

Matthew was a British soldier and Lord...found underneath dead bodies on a battlefield! I can't imagine how horrifying that would be and unable to see anything for months after Bethany and her dog Dandie found him!
There are words used which are not in keeping with times! Bethany and Matthew adventures are a mixture of crocodile Dundee and Robinson Carusoe! If ever a couple deserved a HEA these two. They survived in 1 week more than most couples do in a lifetime! If that isn't enough more adventures happen after they discover their love! There is humour, love shooting alligators and more is this story! But this story doesn't gain its title until the very end!

I enjoyed the realism to the book. The characters were written so well, this had me so engaged in the story. I had one hiccup with the book and that is Bethany at the young age of eighteen. I imagine seeing a woman of twenty four or older for the romance books. I believe that the way the plot was written added so much weight to the depth of how far the book could have me the reader get swept away in the book. I was very impressed by this authors writing. The characters were fresh and very believable. Their personalities contributed to the grit. The strong emotions. And the pure romance between the two main characters.

AN EXCERPT

Chalmette Plantation
New Orleans, Louisiana
January 8, 1815

The thick morning mist had quickly given way to daybreak, which had pushed through the fog only minutes earlier. On its heels, dark sulfuric clouds of black rose everywhere as cannon fire erupted, camouflaging the musket balls and grapeshot which were cutting down bodies everywhere Colonel Matthew Romney looked and slashing holes in the defenses. Surely, Hell had risen. The bright blue sky had lasted only moments before the fighting began.
Matthew hated mosquitos, had grown tired of this war, and would never comprehend the military’s refusal to adapt to the guerrilla warfare they faced in the American wilderness. He considered the ungodly number of fallen men, who would never see their families again. He thought of his own family and wondered how they were doing—what they were doing. His younger brother, Jason, would soon be eleven. Matthew left his family and everyone important to him over two years ago; his only connection to his world was the sparse letters he received from home.
A rider skidded to a stop in front of him. “Colonel.” He slid from his horse and saluted. “Can you point me to the general, sir? I have urgent news.”
Already? The battle was ten minutes old. “General Pakenham is in the house.” Matthew turned and pointed toward the white Villeré plantation house a hundred yards behind him, where command had set up days before.
“Thank you, sir,” the messenger replied, just before a musket ball hit him square in the head and knocked him to the ground.
Matthew’s heart lurched and for a moment, he felt lightheaded, almost weightless. He looked down and saw a scrawled note in the messenger’s hand. He retrieved it and ran to the house, weaving through bodies and praying he would not have the same fate.
Running up the steps, he pushed past the sentry at the door and into the office Pakenham occupied, handing him the note before leaning down to catch his breath.
“Thank you, Romney.” Pakenham perused the scribble, suddenly pacing. “Jesus! Where did you get this?”
“A messenger, sir. He died after asking for you. I saw the note and grabbed it. The man said it was urgent.” Romney struggled to get his heart under control as he pulled himself up to stand at attention.
“Colonel Rennie is dead, and most of his men perished trying to retreat. The messenger may have been part of his regiment. Dedicated man. The ladder unit is still behind us. I wish to heaven it had made it through,” he murmured. “We have to move toward Line Jackson and check these dirty shirts without them. Assemble our men,” he said, examining his saber and snatching his hat. “No time to lose.”
“Yes, sir.” Matthew raced to follow orders, with the general on his heels. Within what seemed like only minutes, the surrounding eight thousand men assembled and began their march toward Line Jackson.
The American line was a canal widened into a defensive trench and strengthened by a seven-foot earthen and timber rampart. Large bales of cotton covered with mud hid and protected cannons, blending them into the embankment.
Red-clad bodies from previous assaults lay everywhere as they got closer, forcing the men to step over and around fallen comrades as they pushed through. On their way, they got word that Major General Samuel Gibbs had also been killed. Gibbs’s assault had also failed, and it had decimated his men in the torrent of battle. The surge of American fire had been like none they had ever seen before—almost surgical with precision. The plan had been to annihilate Jackson’s men in a net of crossfire, but with Rennie’s demise and their other setbacks, that strategy had failed. Ahead of them the rampart emitted what looked to be the devil’s flames moving toward them.
“Bayonets, ready,” Matthew commanded the surrounding men, pushing down the cold fissure traveling up his spine. Everything feels wrong. He felt for his saber for assurance, but its presence made little difference.
Within sight of the line, Pakenham gave the order to attack, answered immediately by cannon fire and a volley of shots that cleared almost all the men in the lines ahead. Chaos ensued as stunned men continued to push forward, only to be blown into the air, body parts flying. The potent smell of sulfur, excrement, and bile assaulted them. Men tried to retreat, cut down in red waves by grapeshot and musket balls.
The oppressive sounds of terror roared in his ears—explosions, cries, laughter, virtually every noise he could imagine overwhelmed the senses. In his peripheral vision, Matthew thought he saw Pakenham go down. Before he could check, a wave of red ignited the ridge ahead of him. A moment later, he felt a sharp pain hit his lower abdomen. Stunned, he fell from his horse. His mare screamed, struggling to detach herself from him. “Run, girl,” he whispered. He wanted to run himself, but could no longer move. His mother’s face floated in front of him. Stay strong, Son. Come home to us. He wanted to go home. It was his last thought before blackness swallowed him.
The battle sounds gradually faded into voices. The realization he had lived stirred him to consciousness. He could feel the sun warm his face but could not open his eyes. Was he blind? He willed them to open, but saw nothing. Everything hurt, especially his head and his gut. Men spoke around him. How long had he been here?
“We need to find the officers. Look for General Pakenham. He was said to have fallen near here,” a husky voice said. “I would not want to explain to Wellington that we left an officer’s body behind.”
“Over here,” a second man shouted. “I think this is ’im. They must have pulled ’im away from the middle of the battlefield. Did ye know Pakenham was Wellington’s brother-in-law?”
“I did not know, and I do not care. Hurry,” the one with the husky voice commanded. “I can feel them watching us, giving us time to gather our dead. Stack them in piles once we peel the uniforms. It’s impossible to know how long we have.”
Matthew could barely breathe. He was underneath something heavy. It smelled awful. The metallic scent of blood assaulted him. The dead had not been here long enough to rot, had they?
Am I dead? Matthew tried to move an arm. Nothing moved. Nothing worked. The men were there to retrieve the living and bury the dead. He could hear grunting and thuds, unsure either sound meant help for him. It mattered not. He could not save himself. This was surely the end. Warm tears formed and rolled from the corners of his eyes.
Matt, are you crazy? They could have seen you. You take the wildest chances. Evan Clarendon’s excited voice sounded in his head. You locked the door, and they cannot get back into the residences.
He must have been dreaming or hallucinating. Evan Clarendon was across the Atlantic, not in this mosquito-ridden hellhole.
A scene from years past rose in his mind. He and his friends had spied a group of older bullies known to torment the younger boys. On this night, the older bullies were swimming in a nearby pond and had removed their clothing. His friend Evan had taken the added measure of locking the doors to the halls, so the unclothed victims would have to wake people up to be allowed back inside. It had been a perfect crime. Rather than knock, the group of naked boys tried to scale the residence halls to get into the windows and were caught. The headmaster had not been amused. The older bullies had stepped into trouble for the prank, and Matt and his friends had laughed for a week.
A lump formed in his throat. I will never see my friends or family again. “Please do not let me perish here, Lord,” he heard himself murmur.
Matthew, open your eyes. You are wasting valuable time. You must do something. Save yourself, Lucas’s voice prodded him. Lucas Pemberton would know what to do. His friend was resourceful and rarely panicked.
Have a care, Matt! You pledged a blood oath to always be part of our foursome, I will not lose you. Come home to us. You simply cannot give up. I will not accept it. Wake up! Evan Clarendon’s voice chided him—goading him to move, just like he did that day in the woods when they had taken a blood oath. Evan had used a small pocketknife to prick their hands. The four of them had rubbed the blood together and swore to be there for each other. God, he missed his friends. He tried to groan but even to his own ears, it was barely audible. I have to try harder.
Right! Come on, Matt. There is more we need to do together. Stay focused. You will get through this. We are waiting for you, Christopher Anglesey’s voice pleaded in his ear. You can do this, Matt.
If he ever made it out of this Hell, he would tell everyone he held dear how much they meant to him.
Muffled footsteps and a soft whimper to the left of him pulled him from the vision. Please, God, let someone be here.
“Help,” he moaned, but his voice sounded more like a whisper. Would his plea bring help or danger? Matthew decided he had to try. I am so thirsty.
He heard panting. Surely, he would not perish by being eaten by a wild animal.
An alligator does not pant. Calm yourself.
“Dandie, the groan came from this direction.” It was a woman’s voice.
A woman? What would a woman be doing on this godforsaken battlefield?
“Come here, girl.”
The thud of a body being dropped sounded behind him.
“No, it wasn’t him. This one is dead. Yet I know I heard someone. We must be quick; find him before the men with boats come back.” The woman’s voice was low, almost a whisper. She seemed to talk to someone . . . her dog? A soft bark answered.
A man’s moan sounded. He realized it was his.
“Here! Dandie, do you hear that?”
Another body gave a soft thud as it fell back to the ground. Footsteps approached his head.
“Dandie, here.” Her voice was close. Matthew heard a small dog move in his direction before feeling its wet nose sniff his face.
“Help . . .” he moaned again.
He felt pulling, then sheer pain shot through him. His moan became a scream.
“Shh! Sir, we are trying to help. You are under other men, and I must pull you free. This may hurt, but please stay as silent as you can,” the soft female voice said.
“Who? Who?” he said, struggling to talk.
“My name is Bethany. My dog’s name is Dandie. I hate to rush; however, I am afraid fighting will resume. From what I have witnessed, we will need to leave quickly. Please try your best to help me with what strength you can muster. We must hurry,” she pleaded. “Lead the way, girl,” she encouraged her pet.
Matthew was unsure of who “they” were—the British or the Americans. He nodded, or at least thought he did. A few minutes later, he was out from under the body. He heard it thump, taking the space he had once filled.
“Cannot see,” he whispered hoarsely, frightened but grateful to live.

Take a journey in this highly engaging story, that starts out with a battle and wounded soldier, and doesn't stop until the end! As usual, with her engaging characters, which often involves a beloved animal (Dandie in this case) and marvelous descriptions, Anna takes us into the Louisiana Bayou.

He thought he was dead and could only feel pain and pressure on his body. Far from his home in England, he knows he will never see his family again.

She had gone to search for herbs and come upon the ending of a fierce battle, when she and her dog, Dandie found the wounded British soldier. Managing to get him home, and works to heal his wounds and they begin to know each other.

But danger invades and they have to flee to safer grounds to her Aunt's, where her Grandmother is also and get help. Lovable characters, a slow build romance, a search for the hero and danger always present. Simply wonderful! I cannot wait for more!

PS Don't you just love the cover? Sigh.

What a wonderful start to a new series! Anna St. Claire has done a fabulous job with this one. An engaging tale of class differences in a time and place where the hero and heroine are on equal ground. Our heroine is strong, resourceful, and independent while our hero is wounded, determined, and more than our heroine thinks he is. Ms. St. Claire's descriptive writing has me imagining myself there in that place and time. Worth more than 5 stars!

I voluntarily received a copy of Earl of Excess via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Thank you NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing!

This was my first time really delving into Historical romances set in America, specifically during any sort of war times. And also my first time reading this author.

I think this historical romance would be good for anyone who is a fan of American History and hurt/comfort. Cause this poor hero goes through so much throughout this story. And it doesn't end! More happens in the epilogue and I'm just sitting here going Matthew, sir, I am so sorry.

I really liked the cast of characters in this though I felt side characters seemed to weaved back in and out as if being summoned. And I will be fair I didn't really get the romance. I understood it later on in the story but in the beginning it felt like it wanted me to know it was an instant attraction and I felt it was kind of forced.

What this author really excels at is descriptions. She weaves the world around the characters beautifully and I really enjoyed hearing about the local cuisine and the landscape.

I also adore the dog. The dog is the true hero of this story and reminded me a lot of one my childhood dogs.

Colonel Matthew Romney, Lord Longueville son of the Earl of Romney is honorable, he adapts to new situations & always can be depended on; but now, has found himself wounded, left for dead on the battlefield of New Orleans. His head is aching, his bullet wound is painful & he can no longer see. Matthew has tried calling for help but no one comes to his aid & he is across the ocean from home.

Bethany Phillips is a independent, strong-willed, selfless young lady who has leaned to be a herbalist from her grandmother. She has been living with her grandmother since her mother died & her father just wanders around the country. Her Grandmother has gone to visit Bethany's aunt so this morning she & her dog, Dandie (a gift from her mother) went to gather herbs & vegetables at a nearby plantation when the battle begun, so they hid from danger until it was safe. Dandie kept whining & trying to get Bethany to come & after moving some dead bodies she heard & saw Matthew.

This only begins the danger & adventures that happen to them - most importantly after getting Matthew well; the danger was finding him with her. He was conscious enough to help her get to her home where she began to nurse him back to health. If caught, he would be killed & she would be charged with treason - so they decided to travel the river to her aunt's home, even though Matthew hadn't regained his sight. During his time at her home they began having feelings which only grew stronger in the days to come. They get their unlikely & romantic HEA. They had so many dangerous adventures from alligators to kidnapping & more. Dandie the pup was a big part of the story & was a wonderful addition, I love all of the secondary characters especially Bethany's Grandmother & Aunt & Matthew's friend & of course the young neighbor boy. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

The plot opens with a vicious battle scene, one in which there are few survivors and those that succumb to their wounds are left to die, only to be subjected to further indignity as fellow soldiers strip their bodies of any valuables. It is in this heap of bodies that Bethany Phillips' small dog alerts her to the still breathing Colonel Matthew Romney. Bethany may not have the strength required to lift Matthew, but she does have the determination and as she cajoles him into getting to his feet, Matthew realizes that to add insult to injury, he has lost his sight. In the days and weeks that follow, Bethany nurses Matthew back to health but when danger threatens the British officer once again, Bethany has no choice other than to take him to her beloved Grandmother. In this tale of war and adventure, the love that grows between Matthew and Bethany is sweet and gentle, but can she leave the safety of her family for him? Just when Bethany thinks Matthew is safe, danger strikes once again, leaving Bethany in despair of ever seeing him well. This novel is well written without any obvious errors, which is always a pleasure. Danger is ever-present and the romance that develops between the main couple moves slowly. Nevertheless, the story does end on a happy note. I received a copy of this book as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Straight Out Of Louisiana🐊

ADULT Historical Recency Era Romance 💕that takes place almost entirely in Louisiana, with An Abduction🔪.
Louisiana 1815.
The British🔪💪🔫 invasion of Louisiana, leaves British Officer ,Colonel Matthew Romney, shot off his horse 🐎and left for dead in a battlefield near New Orleans. He is found by local Cajun woman, Bethany and her dog, and she rescues him from certain death.

The book is full of great descriptions of the dangerous swamps in The area and some dangerous people as well.

The book seemed disjointed at times , with the story jumping around to different events. Both main characters get in one bind after another, one dangerous situation after another. In fact, way too many bad situations. The story line in its entirety was ridiculous, over the top.

The first part of the book where Matthew🐺🍆⛲🔫🔪 was in the battle, wounded, and then rescued, was great. The rest of the book, not so much.

Colonel Matthew Romney came dangerously close to death on the battlefield near New Orleans.  There is still a lot for him to face if he's to ever return home. Our hero needs to call on all his courage.

Bethany Phillips and her wonderful little dog put their lives on the line to help a wounded enemy soldier.  She's been schooled in healing by her grandmother.  All of that knowledge will be needed.  The backwaters of New Orleans has many dangerous creatures,  some walk on two legs and others have none.

This is an emotional and at times funny, historical romance.  All the characters are fabulous, especially the dog.  A grand adventure.

This is the first in a new series and it certainly whets the appetite for the rest.

I loved it.

This is the first book in a series by a new to me author. Bethany saves the life of a British soldier, Matthew, during the battle of New Orleans. As she nurses him back to health, sparks fly. After enduring so much, they decide to make a life together. I enjoyed the descriptive scenery described by the author and can’t wait to read the next in the series. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.

Colonel Matthew Romney, Lord Longueville, is serving as an officer in the British Army during the American Revolution. Injured gravely during the Battle of New Orleans, he is left for dead when Bethany Phillips (and her beloved dog, Dandie) find him struggling to survive, and save's his life. Bethany knows it would be a death sentence if she was discovered sheltering a British officer in her home, but she can't abandon him, and the more time she cares for Matthew, the harder she falls. When an investigator finds Matthew, and encourages the couple to head for England, Bethany and Matthew set off on a perilous journey, fraught with danger, but with their romance holding them together.

I'm English, okay, so honestly, don't know much about the American Revolution, other than the main bits. I've never really read much around that period - not least set in America - so this was new for me, but really enjoyable. Bethany is a healer, who unexpectedly found herself amidst a battlefield while foraging for herbs. As a healer, she can't abandon those who need her help, even if they are the 'enemy', so Matthew's plight plays strongly on her mind. She takes so many risks to help him, even travelling to a leper colony - which she is known to - in order to hide, and then travel across a country at war to find peace and passage to London. Matthew I couldn't quite grasp at first, but the trauma of his injuries was a large part of that. Considering he's supposed to be a rake (per the series title) he acted very much the gentleman, and seemed at odds with his characterisation at times. All in all, though, it was a nice romance, and a series I plan on continuing.

Quite the adventure for Matthew. He is certainly a survivor. So many unforeseen things happened to him it was unreal. Thank goodness he had his savior Bethany by his side the entire time nursing him through each incident time and time again. Matthew did not know if he would make it home. With the help of Bethany's grandmother and great aunt they helped Matthew recover as best they could. The danger came when a deserter of the American army was determined to turn Matthew over to his commander to clear his name. Then there was a man who wanted to entice Bethany to marry him. But her heart slowly but surely belonged to Matthew. When a friend of Matthew's father found him, he arranged to have them board a ship to England. Then the unthinkable happened. A very good read.

This is definitely a adventure. With unforgettable reasons why they are in love Matthew and Bethany make an incredible couple.
Anna St. Claire has written a beautiful story.

This was a super entertaining book. The characters are wonderful and different from the normal romance stories. This takes place after the horrible Battle of New Orleans. Bethany Phillips is a healer just like her Mother, Grand'Mere and Aunt. After her Mother died when she was young, she has lived with her Grand'Mere learning the art of healing and helping others. After her father left for the war, she has learned to do a lot on her own even being just eighteen. She has gone to gather vegetables, herbs and whatever other items were left in the garden behind the large plantation. The owner told them they could use the garden. Unfortunately, she is there when a Hugh battle takes place between the English and the American troops. She hides with her wonder dog, Dandie till the fighting is over. As hurries to get away, Dandie runs to battle field !! She follows only to hear a man's cry for help. Buried under a pile of dead soldiers she finds a man barely alive. Colonel Matthew Romney is the beloved son of the Earl of Longueville. He has been gravely wounded and left for dead. Bethany takes him to her house and saves his life. When he awakes, he learns he is blind! As both Bethany and Matthew work to heal him they are together a lot. As they spend time together the attraction and passion between is off the charts.
There is a lot going on in the story. An Investigator hired by his family is searching for them.
Due to the war, there are lots of deserters and thieves about causing problems. They have to be careful as Matthew is a British officer, and she could hang for helping him. When things get too dangerous, they travel to her Grand mere's but find more problems and trouble too.,
There are lots of twist and turns that these two get caught in.
This story is so wonderful full of love and learning, villains out to hurt them, storms, her wonderful
dog, Dandie. The Grandmother and Aunt who helps Matthew.
Can Matthew and Bethany figure it all out and still get there happy ever after ?? You will have to get a copy and find out.. You will not be sorry. I didn't want it to end. The ending is truly perfect for this beautiful couple...
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Colonel Matthew Romney, Lord Longueville son of the Earl of Romney, is fighting in the war in Louisiana. He fought in the Napoleonic wars and the in the war with the colonies. As an errand of importance has arrive the messenger is shot, so Matthew takes it to the General only to be told to fight back. However, Matthew gets shot and left for dead as so many had been killed.

Bethany Phillips was born and raised in the area near New Orleans. She lives with her grandmother as her mother died and her father wonders now. She has a dog named Dandie, a gift from her mother, she is learning about herbs and healing methods from her grandmother and aunt.

While gathering herbs and vegetables from the plantation near her home the battle gets heated and Bethany hides. When the battle ends she spied all the people piling bodies and looting. As they leave her dog Dandie darts over to one like of bodies to discover Matthew alive. So she takes him home to heal him and hide him.

Now a strange man is asking about a British officer, a deserter is trying to steal her boat, and Matthew is blinded by an unknown cause. So off to her aunt's home they go to get help as her grandmother is there.

Will Matthew survive? Does the strange man find the person he is looking for and could it be Matthew? Will they be able to travel by boat or is it stolen? If Matthew survives does he make it back to England?

Join Matthew and Bethany as they deal with bullet wounds, fevers, and strange men. You will feel like you are in the midst of it all with the details and great world building. The characters are well defined and lively.

Emotional and tense, this is a page turner. The descriptions of the settings in the story are stunning as it goes from the battlefield at a plantation near New Orleans to the bayou. The hero and heroine are awesome. Bethany Phillips is a healer, smart and courageous enough to help a badly wounded British officer. Colonel Matthew Romney has faced horrors in more than one war. He will need the same will and courage to battle his wounds, fever, and blindness, to heal, and find a way home. Bethany, and her sweet dog Dandie, will be there to help him. The chemistry between Matthew and Bethany is strong from the start. They start out as strangers, but gradually realize that they are developing feelings for each other. The other characters are wonderful. I loved Grand’Mere and Aunt Thea and their ready acceptance of Matthew. As investigators go, Mr. Sinclair is top notch. He managed to find Matthew in the Louisiana Bayou. There is nothing not to like about this story. The hero even learned to love cornbread. Great Read. I recommend it.

Bethany Phillips and her dog help rescue Colonel Matthew Romney after he is left for dead on the battlefield. Bethany nurses him back to health, even though if they are found out she could be tried for treason for helping a British soldier survive. Colonel Matthew Romney has been shot and doesn’t think he will survive to see his family again. But an angel comes to his aid and nurses him back to health. But danger lurks close by, and they need to leave Bethany’s home and travel by boat to her aunt’s house where her grandmother is also staying. Can they make the journey safely and also get Matthew back home to England, or will the danger that is lurking in the background prevent them from not only realizing their feelings for each other but for their lives as well?

Very nice story. The relationship between Bethany and Matthew was well written and very natural. I would recommend this story to others. You will enjoy it.

Anna St. Claire has again brought to life a period in America history that shaped our future with the unlikeliest pair of young hearts . The Earl of Excess presents us with a dutiful young Officer from a land far from the bayous of Louisiana who becomes the charge of a young and resourceful strong woman. Beyond her years, Bethany Phillips follows her sturdy moral compass on a path that changes courses for the dutiful Colonel Matthew Romney and her mission to only see he survived his wounds to that of saving the wishes of her own heart. To successfully complete her mission she must have the guidance of her Grandmere who as the rock in Her life must be consulted. The ensuing journey to complete her tasks forces her to enlist assistance which brings her both favor and mayhem. The conclusion of this ordeal has its twist and reminds us that Wars bring out the best and worse of its participants

A fabulous beginning to a refreshing new series!

A story that brought such vivid colour and life to a time and place, I have previously had very little knowledge of, and found refreshingly engaging as a result.
With characters that hummed with chemistry, strength and compassion and a whole host of subcharacters that radiated warmth, heart, levity and an atmosphere cloaked in harrowing tension to the mix.
All interwoven into a captivating plot that ebbed and flowed through many challenges, that bonded Bethany and Matthew, in a sweetly enchanting romance, that built and blossomed through many trials of shared danger and tender connection. Alongside the most lovable and tenacious wee pup, Dandie, ever to be captured on the page.
A truly lovely story that encompasses the horrors of the aftermath of war, through the many consequences it forces on those surrounding it and the hope and strength that sees them through!

Ms. St. Claire has written an intriguing and entertaining story that captured my interest from the start and I was engrossed till the last page. It is the first book of her new series The Rakes of Mayhem, and it is off to a brilliant start. Ms. St. Claire does an amazing job of bringing the story and characters to life with her vivid descriptions. Bethany and Matthew had such a strong attraction and raw chemistry, and I enjoyed seeing their connection deepen. Both characters were so endearing, I couldn't help but fall in love with them. The characters were well-developed and I enjoyed their dialogue and interactions. The story flowed well and kept my interest all the way through and the romance was heartwarming and beautifully portrayed. A very enjoyable and entertaining read, and I am excited to read the upcoming books in the series. A wonderful start to an amazing new series!
