3.6 ⭐️ This is a great middle grade manga read, perfect for those just getting into Manga and older readers alike.
This is such good fantasy that follows a realm where spirits are present as physical (almost dragon like) creatures. When they die they cause the area to rot until a soul sender helps them to pass over. It’s a really great book for younger manga readers that discusses themes around life and death.
Great for fans of The Hobbit, Avatar, and other fantasy’s with lush world building and creatures and a dash of action. The artwork in this is superb and I really enjoyed the first instalment of the story.

Premier tome sympathique, mais sans plus honnêtement. C'est mignon mais bon, est-ce que cela suffira sur le long-terme ? J'ai l'impression qu'il n'y avait pas beaucoup à se mettre sous la dent... On est restés à la surface et on n'a pas appris grand chose ! Ah et, je veux voir un peu plus de créatures :) A voir avec les prochains tomes.

Un premier tome qui reste un peu trop en surface à mon goût mais qui nous offre quand même de très jolies planches ainsi qu'un sujet qui, s'il est bien développé, peut être très intéressant et prenant.

D'une part j'ai lu ce manga pour validé mon challenge good read 😅
Néanmoins, ce premier tome est une bonne mise en place, mais manque de profondeur à mon goût. Les dessins sont fabuleux ça il n'y a rien à dire. Mais l'histoire de fond manque. Je me dis que c'est du au fait de l'installation de l'histoire, à voir pour le tome 2. Mais si cette saga reste plate... Je ne pense pas la continué.
Les 3 étoiles c'est pour le bon potentiel de l'histoire.

Api — The Souls Sender Vol 1 by Rona is set in a world where people and spirits live in kinship with one another and prosper together, however when a spirit dies it unleashes an evil curse upon the land. We follow Api, a young female soul sender who travels from village to village sending spirits on their way to the afterlife and getting rid of their black curse, whilst also tracking down her parents who are missing. Api is a determined character who bears the painful burden of soul sending at such a young age, I really enjoyed seeing her journey, overcoming obstacles and learning more about her magical gift and its limitations. The artwork is not as creepy as I hoped for but it’s fun, detailed and helps readers to become immersed into the world.

Although I'm not sure I buy English publisher Titan's assertion that this is "perfect for fans of magical girls" (it feels like it'd appeal more to fans of quiet quest fantasies, like Somari and the Forest of Spirits and The Skull Dragon's Precious Daughter), this is still a good start that promises that subsequent books will be better.

I so appreciate a charming, folkloric story with a lot of heart. The first volume in this series very much fits that bill.
In this story, we are introduced to a world of spirits and magic. Divine spirits roam the lands and communities live under their protection. Unfortunately, when a spirit dies, its death unleashes a curse upon the land where its body lies. The only way to neutralize the curse is to have a Soul Sender purify the land and send the spirit to the afterlife.
Enter Alpi—a traveling Soul Sender—and her familiar, Pernai. While on a quest to find her Soul Sender parents, Alpi assists communities in need.
This is just such an enchanting little story. The world of this story so very much embodies the “cottage core” aesthetic. Blend that with the mysticism and shamanic practice and you’ve got the most lovely, endearing tale in this series.
Plus, the art style is so crisp and whimsical. I adore all the character and creature designs so much. Walking through this world feels like walking through a del Toro movie.
Definitely recommend, especially if you are a cozy fantasy fan~

The art is good and detailed, and the characters fit the scenery. The topic is interesting, in the idea of sending spirits to the afterlife so that their corpses can stop polluting the land and hurting the people is interested. Ironically it is similar to the Last Elf Manga, but the world it builds around it feels much more grounded and real. I feel this is the case because the main character must struggle and suffer to come up with their ideas and solutions, which gives more time to take in the world around them.
Ultimately, child MCs are not my favourite, so I don't feel like rating it higher, but it is good for what it provides.

Sympa et très beau ! Curieuse de voir ce que donne la suite car pour l'instant il y a un beau potentiel mais l'histoire est restée en surface. Je ne vois pas trop où cela va nous mener... Je vais tout de même lire le tome 2

Conte écologique mignon. Une double couverture incroyable qui propose une petite encyclopédie des esprits et une surcouverture texturée, détails très appréciés. Les dessins sont beaux, les costumes et paysages travaillés.
Cependant l'histoire est creuse, les expressions faciales moyennes (alpi ne semble pas souffrir, la colère des persos ne se ressent pas). Mido, personne ENFIN intéressante change d'avis et d'identité en 3 pages, c'en est presque ridicule. Cela ressemble à un enchaînement d'anecdotes plus qu'à une véritable histoire suivant un fil rouge (qui est la recherche de ses parents). Le manque de créature et de dialogue rend la lecture plutôt pénible finalement. J'espère que les autres tomes sauront proposer un contenu plus dense et intéressant, ce premier tome s'apparente plutôt à une introduction qu'une véritable entrée en matière.

I love pretty much any manga about a priest or religion as the subject matter of fantasy or "speculative fiction." This one was sweet and well-drawn, and it has a lot of potential, but only a bit of it could be seen here. I look forward to more volumes.

Représentant un peu le folklore japonais, elle rappelle sur plusieurs points le film d’animation Princesse Mononoké de chez Ghibli, de Hayao Miyazaki.
La pauvre petite Alpi n’est pas vraiment prise au sérieux par les villageois qu’elle aborde. Du fait de son jeune âge, ceux-ci ont souvent tendance à croire que c’est son compagnon qui est Soul sender. Cette maladresse indique qu’il y a quelques préjugés sur cette fonction, mais peut-être qu’elle indique aussi qu’ils ont plus l’habitude de voir des personnes « plus âgée » dans ce rôle. Enfin, s’ils ont l’habitude de voir des personnes plus âgées, cela indique aussi qu’ils voient assez peu de jeunes, et donc que les Soul Sender deviennent plus rare. Cette rareté se reflète d’ailleurs dans l’une des intrigues, où les habitants ont désormais une mauvaise vision des Soul sender, car aucun d’eux n’étaient venus les aider, car trop surchargé de travail. Pour le moment, la durée de vie des esprits divins n’est pas évoquée, mais visiblement ils sont suffisamment nombreux pour générer un besoin important de Soul sender. Pour l’instant, il semblerait que les esprits divins soient lié à un élément : vent, terre, eau ou feu. Chacun crée la vie, puis engendre la mort à la fin de sa propre vie, ils vivent toujours dans une même zone sans en bouger.
Du coup, je me demande également s’il n’y a qu’un seul esprit divin par zone ou si, par exemple, un esprit divin de terre peut cohabiter avec un de l’eau. En lisant le bestiaire du tome, on apprend que l’esprit lié à la terre, fait pousser la végétation, c’est tout. Pareillement, celui de l’eau purifie celle-ci. D’où mon questionnement, et le fait que je pense qu’il est possible pour plusieurs d’entre eux de coexister dans une même zone. Ce qui expliquerait un peu aussi leur nombre, comme indiqué plus haut. Lorsqu’ils périssent, les zones qu’ils bénissaient autrefois de leurs bienfaits, finissent par être contaminées (comme dans Princesse Mononoké). Seul les Soul sender, peuvent les purifier, afin qu’un autre esprit divin puisse venir prendre la place de l’ancien. Si le nombre de Soul sender diminue, c’est assez inquiétant, car cela veut dire qu’il y aura plus de zones contaminées, donc moins de zone habitables, et surtout plus d’esprit divin en errance. The Magical Girl genre is a popular one, particularly when it comes to manga. Linked to female empowerment, stories within this genre usually feature young girls with immense magical powers that they use whilst on some kind of adventure or quest. Whilst Alpi the Soul Sender does away with one of the more popular elements of the genre, the transformation into another alter-ego, it is very much a part of the genre, one that takes a more fantastical bent.
Set in a world vastly different to our own, we're introduced to Alpi, a young girl who has the power to help purify the souls of divine spirits, huge, magical animals that bring prosperity to the world. Whilst these creatures are normally benevolent entities that live in harmony with the world and people around them, when they die their souls become corrupted, and a dark sickness starts to infect the land around them. Any who approach the dead spirits is burned by the darkness. Soul Senders, however, have the ability to withstand this dark curse, and can extract the spirits soul, sending in on to the afterlife and ending the curse.
Accompanied by the adult Perenai, who acts as her guardian and assistant, Alpi is trying to follow int he footsteps of her parents, who were also Soul Senders, using old letters that they sent to her whilst travelling the world. Having not seen them in years, and not knowing where they might be, Alpi is hoping that she might be able to find her missing parents, and is more than happy to help any divine spirits that need her skills along the way.
The first volume of the series contains four stories. The first of them, 'The Bright Soul Sender' is a nice introduction to the book and characters. In this story Alpi and Perenai arrive in a small village where a young man has recently encountered a dead divine spirit, and is suffering from the curse it left behind. Alpi helps to cure him of the curse, and then performs her ritual to help send the spirit on. There's not big dramatic moment in this story, no twist or sudden shocking moment, and it's a by the numbers soul sending. However, as it's the first story in the entire series this works perfectly, as it's introducing us to everything we need to know. Not only do we come away understanding the rules of the world, but we also get to know the lead characters a little too.
The second story 'The Lake With The Dark Purple Waters' follows a similar route, in being another story of a village that needs the help of a Soul Sender. What makes this one different from the last, however, is that this time the spirit has died in the middle of a lake. This means that Alpi cannot draw the required magic ring around it, nor can she reach it to extract its soul. Over the course of this story we see Alpi come up with solutions to these problems, as well as her determination to succeed no matter what, even when it looks like there's no way she can. This chapter gives us more of an insight into who Alpi is as a character, and teaches the reader not to underestimate her just because she's a little girl.
The third story is one that gives us a lot more background to what it means to be a Soul Sender. 'The Temple of Purification' sees Alpi and Perenai travel to a town that services various Soul Senders, with shops that can restock their supplies, blacksmiths to help maintain their tools, and a temple that allows them to purify themselves. During the other two chapters we'd seen Alpi being hurt by the curse left behind by the dead spirits, but it's here that we learn that those curses had also been getting inside her, and that her bod had been accumulating the dark energies. By going to the temple she can expel this darkness, though it's a process that causes her great pain. This story gives us a lot of insight into the workings of the Soul Senders, and shows us that it's bigger than just Alpi, with whole systems set up to help the Soul Senders and their mission. It also gives us some insight into Peranai, and how he's more than just a simple guardian/servant to Alpi, but cares deeply for the young girl under his charge.
The final story fills the last two chapters of the book, 'A Wish for the Fire Moth'. This story sees Alpi and Perenai come to a land where a divine spirit couldn't be helped in time, and nature in that area has died out. The local population have instead crafted themselves a great stone city, one fuelled by steam and heat. However, Alpi soon discovers that the city doesn't run on natural sources, but a chained and tortured divine spirit that the local lord has captured beneath the city. The divine spirit is weakening, and the city is struggling because of it. The lord demands that Alpi kill the spirit and send it soul so that a new spirit can come, one that he can once again enslave. This story feels like the first real adventure of the book, a story that has some twists and turns, and puts Alpi in the role of protagonist, able to make choices and affect the story rather than just reacting to events. The art on the book is also fantastic. The cover art reflects the interior art well, and each and every panel is packed with detail. The environments are all well crafted and packed with details and stuff to find, and it feels like a fully fleshed out world. The characters are also really well done too, and characters like Alpi and Perenai come with really detailed and intricate outfits. Where the book really shines, however, is with the divine spirits, huge, mystical creatures that have amazing designs, and look like they're stepped out of the world of legend. Rona makes everything in this book look fantastic, and the level of detail and care given to each and every page is astonishing.
Whilst Alpi the Soul Sender is being marketed as a magical girl book it's also a really interesting and well done fantasy novel, one that crafts a cool new world for readers to get lost in. It's going to appeal to those who love the magical girl genre thanks to the cute but fierce hero at the centre of the story, but it will also appeal to those who may not have tried the genre much, but are fans of fantasy. Whatever it is that draws you to the book, its interesting world, amazing designs, and well crafted story are sure to entertain.
Set in a world vastly different to our own, we're introduced to Alpi, a young girl who has the power to help purify the souls of divine spirits, huge, magical animals that bring prosperity to the world. Whilst these creatures are normally benevolent entities that live in harmony with the world and people around them, when they die their souls become corrupted, and a dark sickness starts to infect the land around them. Any who approach the dead spirits is burned by the darkness. Soul Senders, however, have the ability to withstand this dark curse, and can extract the spirits soul, sending in on to the afterlife and ending the curse.
Accompanied by the adult Perenai, who acts as her guardian and assistant, Alpi is trying to follow int he footsteps of her parents, who were also Soul Senders, using old letters that they sent to her whilst travelling the world. Having not seen them in years, and not knowing where they might be, Alpi is hoping that she might be able to find her missing parents, and is more than happy to help any divine spirits that need her skills along the way.
The first volume of the series contains four stories. The first of them, 'The Bright Soul Sender' is a nice introduction to the book and characters. In this story Alpi and Perenai arrive in a small village where a young man has recently encountered a dead divine spirit, and is suffering from the curse it left behind. Alpi helps to cure him of the curse, and then performs her ritual to help send the spirit on. There's not big dramatic moment in this story, no twist or sudden shocking moment, and it's a by the numbers soul sending. However, as it's the first story in the entire series this works perfectly, as it's introducing us to everything we need to know. Not only do we come away understanding the rules of the world, but we also get to know the lead characters a little too.
The second story 'The Lake With The Dark Purple Waters' follows a similar route, in being another story of a village that needs the help of a Soul Sender. What makes this one different from the last, however, is that this time the spirit has died in the middle of a lake. This means that Alpi cannot draw the required magic ring around it, nor can she reach it to extract its soul. Over the course of this story we see Alpi come up with solutions to these problems, as well as her determination to succeed no matter what, even when it looks like there's no way she can. This chapter gives us more of an insight into who Alpi is as a character, and teaches the reader not to underestimate her just because she's a little girl.
The third story is one that gives us a lot more background to what it means to be a Soul Sender. 'The Temple of Purification' sees Alpi and Perenai travel to a town that services various Soul Senders, with shops that can restock their supplies, blacksmiths to help maintain their tools, and a temple that allows them to purify themselves. During the other two chapters we'd seen Alpi being hurt by the curse left behind by the dead spirits, but it's here that we learn that those curses had also been getting inside her, and that her bod had been accumulating the dark energies. By going to the temple she can expel this darkness, though it's a process that causes her great pain. This story gives us a lot of insight into the workings of the Soul Senders, and shows us that it's bigger than just Alpi, with whole systems set up to help the Soul Senders and their mission. It also gives us some insight into Peranai, and how he's more than just a simple guardian/servant to Alpi, but cares deeply for the young girl under his charge.
The final story fills the last two chapters of the book, 'A Wish for the Fire Moth'. This story sees Alpi and Perenai come to a land where a divine spirit couldn't be helped in time, and nature in that area has died out. The local population have instead crafted themselves a great stone city, one fuelled by steam and heat. However, Alpi soon discovers that the city doesn't run on natural sources, but a chained and tortured divine spirit that the local lord has captured beneath the city. The divine spirit is weakening, and the city is struggling because of it. The lord demands that Alpi kill the spirit and send it soul so that a new spirit can come, one that he can once again enslave. Hallo ihr Süßen 💕
uhh, dieser erste Band war für mich ein absoluter Pageturner und wahrer Augenschmauß. Ich hatte, beim lesen das Gefühl einen Ghibbli Film zu schauen, so vieles hat mich an die Welten von Totoro usw. erinnert und das war einfach ein absoluter genuß. Alpi ist eine wundervolle Protagonistin, die ich sofort ins Herz geschlossen habe und ihren , ich nenne ihn mal "Buttler/ Beschützer", habe ich auch total gemocht, denn er hat mich an die Manga Reihe Black Buttler erinnert, was für eine geniale Kombi. Ghibbli, Black Buttler und ganz viel Herz und Fantasy und fantastische, einzigartige Wesen. Ich bin absolut begeistert und werde definitiv weiter lesen! Lieben Gruß Sonja / Shaaniel

Ce qui m’a attiré dans ce somptueux manga, c’est la magnificence du dessin de la couverture. Les traits fins et précis ainsi que les couleurs utilisées ont happé mon regard. Par seulement l’objet-livre, la mangaka promettait une histoire douce d’aventure.
Et quelle aventure !

Dans ce premier tome, nous faisons la connaissance d’Alpi, une jeune enfant capable de prouesses vantées dans le monde. En effet Alpi fait partie de ces fameux mages pouvant absorber la pollution maléfique que crée le cadavre d’un esprit de la nature et de délivrer l’âme de son dernier. Alpi est une Soul Sender et au fil des planches, on finit par comprendre à quel point elle est importante, pour les habitants et pour l’équilibre du monde.
Alpi est jeune et accompagné de son servant Pelenaï, elle voyage afin d’aider le plus de monde possible et de retrouver la trace de ses parents, partis du jour au lendemain.
Ce premier tome est assez introductif. Par son coup de crayon, la mangaka nous présente la féerie des paysages de ce monde fantastique, mais également son côté obscur avec le détail dans les cadavres des esprits, les méfaits de cette pollution sur tout ce qu’elle touche. On ne sait pas encore grand-chose d’Alpi, si ce n’est qu’elle m’a semblée avoir un grand cœur et une détermination sans faille à aider ceux qui viennent la voir. Cela dit, je pense que la protagoniste va évoluer dans les prochains tomes, étant encore une enfant, et que son évolution va être intéressante.
J’ai très hâte de voir cela et d’en savoir plus sur les Soul Senders ! Ce manga allie magie et nature. J’ai eu l’impression de lire un conte ou une fable, qui m’a bercée avant de me coucher.
J’ai le tome 2 et le tome 3 dans ma pile à lire et je pense que je ne vais pas attendre longtemps pour les découvrir !

J'ai adoré découvert l'univers dans lequel évolue la jeune Soul Sender, Alpi et son assistant Pelenai.
A travers une série de petites aventures sous le même schéma, on apprend à connaître la fonction des Soul Sender, chargés de guider les âmes des Grands Esprits divins (sortes de chimères d'animaux mythiques gigantesques, assez proches des esprits de la nature du Princesse Mononoké de Miyazaki) vers le soleil.
Chaque village où meurt un Grand Esprit est menacé par le fluide sombre et brûlant qui s'échappe des corps en décomposition des esprits. Les Souls Senders, grâce à un entraînement et à une nature particulière sont les seuls capables d'accomplir le rituel qui permet à l'âme des esprits de quitter leur corps.
Les graphismes sont vraiment très réussis et notamment pour ce qui concerne le rituel, cela peut faire penser à L'atelier des sorciers puisque le langage utilisé n'est pas celui que l'on connaît mais une langue mystérieuse pour les incantations et les symboles de libération. La nature et tous les éléments naturels sont très immersifs. J'ai aussi beaucoup aimé les éléments encyclopédiques sous la jaquette de couverture.
Le caractère d'Alpi est bien trempé et le côté protecteur de Pelenai contrebalance sa témérité.
C'est une série dont j'irai lire avec grand plaisir les tomes suivants.

Alpi est une Soul Sender. En tant que telle, son rôle est de libérer l’âme des esprits divins morts. Ces âmes sont prisonnières de leur corps qui se putréfie, empoisonnant au passage la terre et les humains qui s’approchent de leurs dépouilles.
Alpi est relativement jeune, je suis incapable de déterminer son âge, mais les gens la considèrent comme une enfant. Elle est assistée par son serviteur Pelenai.
Pour le moment, on ne sait pas grand-chose de ces deux personnages si ce n’est qu’Alpi suit la trace de ses parents, eux aussi Soul Senders et disparus. Donc elle voyage et exerce sa vocation lorsqu’on a besoin de ses services.
Franchement, la pauvre Alpi en chie, ça ne fait vraiment pas rêver. Pourtant, elle essaie de rester joyeuse, mais on sent que ça cache une souffrance folle. Elle est mignonne comme tout et super attachante. J’adore ce personnage.
Les dessins sont magnifiques, aussi beaux que sur la couverture. Les détails dans les visages, les habits ou les décors sont impressionnants, pas autant que dans des sagas comme Magus of the library, mais pas loin.
Je suis fan de l’ambiance qui se dégage de ce premier tome. C’est digne d’un ghibli.
C’est un gros coup de cœur pour cette lecture et j’ai hâte de lire la suite.

🇩🇪 Das wunderschöne Cover lässt schon darauf schließen, dass die ganze Geschichte rund um Alpi vor allem eins ist: Optisch wunder-, wunderschön aufbereitet! Die Gestaltung der unterschiedlichen göttlichen Geister ist so kreativ und traumhaft schön, ein bisschen wie in einem Ghibli-Film. In den Innenklappen des Frontcover gibt es eine Art kleines Lexikon mit detaillierten Infos zu den Geistern, die in diesem Band vorkommen. Definitiv ein kleines Highlight!
Die Geschichte an sich blieb für mich im ersten Band noch ein bisschen einfach und doch sehr linear. Ich konnte mich in den ersten Kapiteln zwar bezaubern- aber nicht unbedingt überraschen lassen. Es werden zwar auch einige Dinge aufgeworfen, die Potential für einen "roten Faden" geben, noch fand ich den Manga jedoch eher Episodenhaft (Nicht als Kritik gemeint, sondern eher als Feststellung). Ich bin gespannt, in welche Richtung sich Teil 2 entwickeln wird. Band 1 hat mir auf jeden Fall schonmal viel Freude bereitet und mich auch mitreißen können! Für alle, die zauberhafte Geschichten von abenteuerlichen Reisen und kreative, schöne Visualisierungen lieben. Ich gebe 4 🌟

Nature spirits bring blessings that benefit people, but when a spirit dies, a blackening curse spreads blight that can only be dispelled when a soul-sender performs a ceremony to free the spirit's soul, though not without risk to themselves. Alpi is a child soul-sender wandering with her butler-like attendant, performing ceremonies while searching for her parents.
The first couple of sendings feel pretty standard - one normal ceremony to show readers what it's about, one with circumstances making the ceremony difficult to perform - but the third and final story in this volume has more weight, bringing up ethical questions of morally right vs economically pragmatic. That got me interested, but I wasn't entirely satisfied by the conclusion (too neat, imo).
The overall tone and eco-message feels similar to Princess Mononoke, though (so far) with less character depth.
Content concerns: no swearing, no nudity or sex, no drugs or drinking (so far); occasional fantasy scariness (the blight), threats of violence

Thank you for an e-arc of this book. I have requested it because it sounded really interesting from the synopsis. I am always curious for stories about spirit souls.
The story follows Alpi, a girl who can perform a ceremony that sends the souls of spirits away. She is really cute, funny and also stubborn and strong. I really like her at the start of the story. I need to see more to understand her better. Also, the plot gave me enough information to keep wanting more and I am curious how the story will move on.
Unfortunately, the quality of the e-arc was not very good and there is not much I can say about the art. I hope the final art will have beautiful art, especially when it comes to the spirits (they sound very interesting).
I highly recommend this manga for the story and characters.
