FBI Case Files Michigan: Tales of a G-Man

A retired Michigan FBI special agent recounts some of his biggest cases, including Jimmy Hoffa, the Detroit mob, and numerous grisly homicides.

Across the Mitten and through the Upper Peninsula, the Wolverine State has witnessed some thrilling and historic federal cases. In Detroit, FBI agents took point investigating the kidnapping (and safe return) of a GM executive’s son and in a manhunt for an armed killer in the north woods near Escanaba. The Bureau was called in to discover who poisoned patients at the Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital and for a grisly double homicide solved by a persistent and determined fingerprint examiner. Michigan agents spearheaded the first-ever investigation and prosecution of an Internet threat, and legendary football coach Bo Schembechler inspired an epic international undercover operation targeting the illegal distribution of steroids. Retired Special Agent Greg Stejskal recalls these stories and others from more than thirty years as a G-man in Michigan.

First, it should be called, Briefs of a G-Man, not tales of a g-man. Very disappointed in the lack of storytelling ability. It was more along the lines of a very stilted synopsis.

Second, it should no longer be surprising to me that there are educated people out there that don’t understand the difference between “ironically” and “coincidentally,” but for some reason it’s surprising enough to me that it still irks me. Example: “In January 2006, in front of U.S. District Court Judge Patrick Duggan (the father of current Detroit mayor Mike Duggan, who, ironically has been trying to turn Detroit around after it has been racked by years of public corruption)…” I read that and immediately was desperately looking for the irony, but I realized he meant “coincidentally” instead.

I could go on, but you get the idea. I’m sure you have read self-published books like this too. I walk away thinking that even if the author didn’t want to have it edited (I get it, editing is expensive), could he not at least have found a close relative who might have been willing to proofread for free, or for a nominal fee?

True crime cases from a Michigan FBI Agent.

In FBI Case Files Michigan, Greg Stejskal narrates notable cases he worked on in his 30+ years as a FBI agent in Michigan. The cases he chose to describe were ones he had first hand knowledge on, told in a wonderful storytelling voice, easy to for the reader to understand the details, without losing the focus. Many chapters include photos from newspaper articles, some of them were cases I remembered hearing about when they happened. I enjoyed this book, and hope to read others by this talented G man.
