Pangea, a short story collection by my dear friend Simon Phillips, was the perfect way for me to dive back into the world of short fiction, from which I have absented myself for several years. Simon's quick wit had me laughing in some sections, and his dialogue is always supremely believable. The ambiguous endings of some of these stories had me thinking about them long after I had finished them, wondering what happened to the characters in the end.
Speaking of characters, Simon has a knack for creating characters who feel very real, probably because they all seem very morally gray and complicated. They could be your neighbors or your cousins or that guy who talked your ear off at the post office that one time. His settings also feel very fully realized. These two elements combined make you feel as though you are truly watching the scene in front of you, not reading it on a page.
If you've been in a reading slump or just want something a little different, let these five short stories guide you back. Simon is a delight to follow.
