Oh wow, I took 10 months to read this. That makes it sound terrible! It's not. It might be the best volume yet.

Volume four covers the fourth in-game event in the story and the last of season one of the anime (or the other way around; the book came first). It's basically one long in-game segment covering an all-out war between the guilds, and it is a lot of fun. As with my other reviews of this series, I'm going to be comparing the book and anime, and it's an interesting comparison (IMHO).

Essentially, the major differences are down to the different media. When writing, I find it easy to picture fight scenes and such, but it's way harder to write them and make them sound amazing. The set-piece battles in the book don't hold a candle to the versions in the anime. The two big fights against the Flame Empire/Emperors (depending on version) and the Order, each vs Maple Tree, get an episode each, in effect, but they're pretty short in the book. The anime pulls out the stops to make things more dramatic and visually exciting. It's far harder to achieve that in prose.

On the other hand, the book is funnier. You get more detail. There are parts of the event which just don't happen in the anime (and the anime changed a few other things, partially to increase dramatic tension). I watch the BOFURI anime for amusement and 'comfort.' It's one of my go-to feel-good watches, but this book in particular manages to be more amusing. Still, there's the one scene where Maple finally breaks out Atrocity, an absolute high point in the anime (and the bit where you yell 'Yes! She did it! Woot!' at the screen) which doesn't have the same impact in prose.

Basically, this is a fun read. I started it in January, not realising that I didn't want to read a fantasy just then. Having picked it up again, I am so glad I did. A good, fun read. I don't think I'll leap straight into volume 5, but I'll read it at some point in the future. If nothing else, I think the second anime season is due out in January, and I'll want to keep up.

Well, after a brief high in the last volume back to average for Bofuri. It could be my fault for having watched the anime before the source material and that having a negative effect on my reception. Having read the first two volumes of the manga, I'm coming to the conclusion that this series is a bit more exciting in visual format. The setting for Bofuri is a video game after all and having someone describe a game to you is less interesting than watching a game being played.

Lots of humor is derived from other, more experienced players witnessing just how broken of a player Maple is purely by accident. And it is true that Maple has taken advantage of corners of the game many players wouldn't think to venture out to. But it was clearer and clearer to me as I began to struggle to suspend my disbelief that NewWorld Online (an immemorable name which likely points to the amount of thought put into building the game world) itself is a game so fundamentally, irrevocably broken that it's no wonder a new, inexperienced player managed to warp it so beyond the admins recognition.

Now that we've reached the conclusion of season one of the anime I should hope things will pick back up. At the very least I'm glad to be able to take a short break from the series while I wait for the next volume to drop in April.

After a solo Maple wipes out hundreds of players in this volume’s guild event, the author has the audacity to suggest Maple’s greatest weakness is her DPS!?!? NewWorld Online is so imbalanced that it would surely fail as a real game. This is yet another bland volume. With a second season anime adaptation already announced, I fear the kids will still be interested in reading this farce. I would recommend gaming fans look to any number of more engaging LitRPG alternatives. Start with the very accessible God Core series from Demi Harper, but don’t stop there!

I really enjoy the comedy this series has. Especially now that I'm used to them explaining game concepts that I'm already familiar with I get to enjoy Maple's build that ignores all of them in order to have more fun.

New content! New content!

We’ve officially moved passed the content covered by the anime! So exciting!!

This volume was also excellent by itself. With the exception of the last chapter or so, it pretty much exclusively covers the fourth event.

Un tome sympathique qui achève de couvrir ce que je connaissais déjà de l'anime. Les nouveaux personnages sont intéressants, et Maple tree est une guilde que l'on a vraiment envie de suivre et qui promet beaucoup pour la suite !

I loved how Maple Tree handled the third event. Maple's reputation is evolving and she continually surprises her friends and foes alike.

I like the story, I felt that previous books had better descriptions but this volume is still engrossing,

The fourth major game event is all about guild vs. guild. Maple and her friends are at a disadvantage due to numbers and even with their skills they have to work and think hard to get into the top 10.

The story is much like the previous volumes, light hearted moe story about OP players enjoying a game to their heart's content with its share of funny moments. I find it entertaining, even though the player vs. player fights at times are not how things would go in real life MMORPGs. For example, players somehow focus on tanks while in RL games the first to be targeted are the healers, quickly followed by the controllers and dps builds.

Sometimes you just want to read something simple and entertaining and this series fulfils that wish very well.
