Oh wow!! It's not often that I fall in love with a heroine - but Heidi was my kind of gal.

Besides having one of the most amazing contemporary romance heroines, the first half of this book was INCREDIBLE!!!!! I laughed so hard at times - I truly had the best time reading this novel. I was actually sending screen shots of the Tesla scene to my friend, telling her she had to read it since she has driven a Tesla before and could totally relate.

Honestly, it's usually the guy that I fall for, but Heidi was the epitome of how a heroine should be. She was bossy outside of bed, well rounded in all things life might throw at her, and she had this adorable can-do-attitude that was charming and very attractive in a woman. She wasn't afraid to say what she wanted, smart, bright and incredibly likable, she had everyone wrapped around her little finger. All the best scenes belonged to her - and I wish more authors would write women like her. I thought the author really outdid herself with creating Heidi, because she was something special.

Jason, was swoony, protective, possessive and bossy in bed. He really found his match in Heidi and adored her strong and can-do personality. He might have actually been my favorite Bruiser so far. It's irresistible to me if a guy can hold his own next to a strong woman.

It was also fun catching up with many old friends and favorite characters. And the Bruisers are still my most favorite fictional sports team yet.

The entire novel was incredibly satisfying. It was a great sports romance that was hella fun, sweet, swoony, touching, and entertaining. A MUST READ for every sports romance fan.

I love the Brooklyn Bruisers books, and I was so excited to read about Jason Castro! I loved his book. Another hit in this awesome hockey romance series.

Jason is the guy who doesn’t do relationships. Yes. He’s that guy. But there is this girl named Heidi who has been interning for the Bruisers and they’ve been circling each other. The thing is, Heidi is off limits for Jason. Her dad is important (the NHL commissioner) and Jason is off limits for Heidi (hockey player). It doesn’t matter though, that pull is still there between them.
I don’t remember ever wanting anything as badly as I want Jason Castro right now.

There was a lot of push and pull in this one, a lot of friends to lovers, denying the feelings and all that jazz, but they have so much chemistry. Heidi was a fun character. At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this 20 year old spoiled girl, but my goodness, she was so much more than what met the eye. Heidi is a hard worker, resourceful, fights for what she wants, and really is a sweetheart.

Jason Castro. Sigh. I loved Jason as well. He’s a really good guy. He’s had a big of a tragic relationship past that has made him hesitant to be with anyone so he does fight it a bit, but once he’s committed he’s all in and it’s the very best!

This is one of my favorite hockey series. I love Sarina’s writing. Her characters are endearing and the stories make me smile, laugh, and feel. This book was fun, sweet, sexy, and emotional and I really enjoyed it! I’m hoping we get more from this series because there are still many characters I’d like to read about! Keep em’ coming!!

4.5 Hot Pepper Stars!

This was a really fun read! I was a little worried about reading Heidi's book, I thought she was going to be more of a ditsy airhead but thank god she wasn't. Heidi came across as smart, independant and super kind.

 photo mascot_zpsdivcxabw.gif

Heidi's dad is the NHL commissioner and makes her do all these medial jobs around the rink like selling hot dogs, being a mascot and working security. He was trying to teach her how hard real life is after she dropped out of college. It backfires on him though because Heidi is strong and clever and finds the fun in everything she does. It also backfires another way in bringing her closer to the hockey players her dad doesn't want her near. There is one hockey player that Heidi has had her eye on and they become much closer after a night in a bar with lots of Tequila and let me tell you, Heidi + Tequila = HILARIOUS!!

 photo drunk_zpsprodmgqm.gif

Jason is a recovering man whore who comes across as arrogant but it's just an armour his put up to protect himself. I loved how these two supported each other, they make such a cute couple but when they get to the bedroom there is nothing cute going on!

I am LOVING this series! Fun, sexy, sweet and funny. I can't wait to read more!

Hard to break a habit, but worth it for happiness

Overnight Sensation hit my Kindle and I was really excited to get started. I planned my reading attack plan. Step 1 – finish what I’m currently reading. Step 2 – go to work, try not to think about it as it sits there waiting patiently to start tonight. Step 3 - start my Friday Night Party Night with a glass of wine in one hand and my Kindle in the other with Overnight Sensation locked and loaded. Well, like all good plans set by a compulsive plan maker, things went awry. My eldest wakes up in the middle of the night with gut pains. What follows is 12 hours of … “Mum, I’M DYING!!!!”

So, my plans were delayed but Heidi and Castro were definitely worth the wait.

It’s so easy to get sucked into a Sarina Bowen story. She easily sucks me into a world that is different to my own but makes me feel at home and part of their lives. I love the Brooklyn Bruisers series and each instalment leaves me extremely satisfied. We are not “meeting” Heidi and Castro for the first time be we are getting to know them a whole lot more. Both Heidi and Castro are not at all as they seem and the more I got to know them, the more I liked them.

Castro hides his feelings because I think he’s afraid that a little chink in his armour will take away the barrier protecting his sanity and his heart. Out of habit, he pushes away anyone who gets too close. Everyone gets the carefree and fun Castro. No one can know that he suffers guilt and heartache from losing his first love. When Heidi comes into his life, he knows his attraction will do more than dint his armour. If he lets her, she might just shatter it and take his heart.

Poor little rich girl wants to break the rules. Heidi is very dissatisfied with her life and the decisions that were made for her not with her, about her future. Standing against her father’s strong will, she finally decides to take matters into her own hands. But, independence is hard and her first steps in breaking the rules lead to being ripped off, embarrassed and humiliated. Heidi is made of tough stuff though, she is determined to start acting like an adult in control of her life. With a little help from Castro and Silas (Castro's teammate and housemate), her first steps, while wobbly, take her where she wants to go.

Castro needs to stop pushing people away and learn to trust his heart will be safe with those who he's come to love. Heidi needs to learn that money is not the way to happiness. Her wish list needs to have more than pretty knick-knacks. They both need to break their habits and find their way to happiness.

I really enjoyed Overnight Sensation. While not my favourite in the series, it still gave me all the highs and lows I’ve come to appreciate from this amazing storyteller. I love the closeness of these teammates and the Brooklyn Bruiser gang. They care about each other and definitely have each other's backs. The connection between Heidi and Castro jumped off the pages and it was inevitable that once was not going to be enough for the two of them. Luckily, it doesn’t take half the book for the two of them to realise it and we get to see them form a thing that then morphs into a relationship. Of course, there are bumps in their road to happiness but most of them were easily traversed.

I highly recommend the Brooklyn Bruisers series, Overnight Sensation, and ANYTHING that Sarina Bowen writes. If you haven't tried, I suggest you skate to it, NOW!!

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

In OVERNIGHT SENSATION Sarina Bowen gives us her quirkiest, funniest, feistiest heroine yet. We met Heidi Jo in Brooklynaire as the team's intern. I actually thought she was a little airhead in Nate and Becca's book, but boy was I wrong.

Heidi's still interning but after leaving college to her father's dismay, daddy dearest finds all kinds of unpleasant jobs for Heidi. In return she moves out of her daddy's apartment and into Jason Castro's bachelor pad, even more to Dad's dismay. Because Jason Castro is a player. No, he's a PLAYER. Heidi just wants one night, one night to have wild sex and Jason isn't averse to that notion. However, that can't happen. Daddy's also the NHL commissioner and he declares Heidi Jo as off limits.
“What would it take to make you serious about a girl again?”
“A frontal lobotomy,” I say immediately.

Jason is a Shakespeare or Dickens reciting, manwhoring riot who gets an itch when relationships are mentioned, but there is so much more depth that isn't obvious at first. He's a dedicated hockey player, loyal to his friends and devoted to his family, and super dirty in bed. When his past tragedy comes to light you understand a little why he thinks he's not a relationship kind of guy. He didn't anticipate Heidi though. While we find out how awesome she is, so does he.
She’s like a beam of sunshine. And my cloudy ass could really use some of that.

Heidi Jo is an avalanche. She is fine with being bossed around in bed. But outside of it? No way, Jose! She fights and stands her ground. Heidi's a resourceful, fearless, smart, idealistic, and a little spoiled young woman who adapts easily with an easy charm. Her quirky, positive personality is adorable. When she got into it with Jason they had an irresistible chemistry, fabulous, laugh-out-loud banter.
“You only let me boss you around when we’re both naked. When you’re dressed up in your cute-as-fuck little outfits, I can’t tell you anything.”

OVERNIGHT SENSATION is another winner in this series and I don't mind if Sarina Bowen writes ten more books about hot Brooklyn Bruisers. Next up is Silas who gives us quite a riddle to ponder. I have a theory and I'm hoping to see it confirmed!
‘ I love you against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.’

4.5 stars.

We’re finally given the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Brooklyn Bruiser’s right-winger, Jason Castro in Overnight Sensation and the lucky lady to steal his well-guarded, slightly grumpy heart is the team’s intern, Heidi Jo Pepper.

description What would it take to make you serious about a girl again?”
“A frontal lobotomy.”

Jason is a player on and off the pitch, not looking for anything beyond one-night and with reason. Smart, funny, kind and so damn loveable, it’s a travesty he won’t let anyone in and the chemistry zapping between him and Heidi can’t be ignored—he’s met his match. And they were unexpected in the best way which largely comes down to Heidi who I wasn’t a particular fan of in the previous book, but who proved me wrong becoming one of my favourite ladies of the series with her resilience, bright nature, and candour.

description I need to know if headboards banging against the wall is a real thing.”

Another winning addition to what is one of my favourite sports series.

Overnight Sensation continues my obsession with the Brooklyn Bruisers! In this story, we get the "overnight sensation" Jason Castro as our hero. And his lady love? None other than the commissioner's daughter, Heidi Pepper! She is also a Bruisers' intern, hoping to take over Becca's job now that Becca is marrying the owner.

Jason is having an off start to his season. He isn't living up to his previous season and struggling in his new position as right wing. One area Jason doesn't struggle? With the ladies. He nearly has a 1 night stand with Heidi, not knowing she was the commissioner's daughter. Heidi has decided she is tired of doing whatever her father wants. She doesn't want to go back to Bryn Mawr and finish school. She doesn't want to date the boring, father approved guy who is even more boring in bed. She decides to stand up to her father and take risks. I admired Heidi a lot. Being able to say "This isn't the path I want my life on" is really difficult. When you have overbearing parents who hold the purse strings, it's even harder. But, Heidi doesn't shy away from working hard to keep her independence. She also works hard at trying to get Castro to sleep with her! Sometimes its downright comical and other times my heart hurt for her because you can feel her emotions. Heidi was a character that made me want to be a better person. She was able to look at everything in life as an opportunity and I find that incredibly admirable!

While Castro initially comes off as a typical manwhore jock, you learn pretty quickly that isn't the whole story. Don't get me wrong-he is a love 'em and leave 'em guy for sure, but he is also driven, dedicated to his sport and his teammates, and really sweet with his family. He carries guilt about a past tragedy and you see how it shapes him in subtle ways. I wanted him to man up and be with Heidi despite her father, but I understood his predicament (hello, its basically the CEO's daughter)! His past really moulds him in some tragic ways and that was heartbreaking.

In the 200 + books I read each year, Sarina Bowen's are always some of my favorites and Overnight Sensation delivered. Bowen writes dynamic characters that you bond with quickly and creates a book 'family' you never want to leave. I hope she writes this series forever because I will never tire of it!

You know who the real sensation is? Heidi Jo Pepper. Who is the MVP? Hot Pepper. Who carried this story on her southern belle shoulders? Heidi Jo fucking Pepper.

So, yeah, OVERNIGHT SENSATION has the dubious honour of breaking my status update silence because of the sheer boredom I had for the first, hm, forty percent? But oh my Heidi. She didn't come to play. She proved her father wrong (who, by the way, was a dick), she hustled, she charmed the pants off everyone within a twelve mile (is that far? I don't know, I'm Canadian, we use kilometres.. pretend it's a lot!) radius, she got shit done, she was the "good" girl while still getting hers, and oh man. Some of the one liners.. priceless.

Am I in love with Heidi Jo Pepper? Maybe.

As for the hero, I mean, whatever. Jason had his moments. But what a grumpy cloud-following wet blanket. I'm not dismissing his damage or baggage but ugh. Not Bowen's best hero by a long shot.

Also, this is the second book by this author (though the other one was co-written) where a character is doling out money for guilt/remorse/sad reasons and maybe can we not with that? I find that an ugly plot point. We need to move on.

So, whatever, this series continues to not-wow me but it's mostly consistent in rating. However I am very interested in a certain character and his backstory with a certain pop star so, like the predictable gremlin I am, I'll read on.

I'm not sure why I let this sit on my Kindle for so long, Jason was amazing! I was rooting for him to finally give in to Heidi and stop running scared and when he did, oh boy did I swoon. I loved how devoted he was to her once he stopping trying to hide from his feeling and he was so sweet it's not even funny. Heidi I did enjoy as a heroine even though there were times I wanted to slap her and tell her to stop looking for her fathers approval in everything she did. Together they were two amazing characters though and I definitely enjoyed their relationship.

“His kisses didn’t just curl my toes. They curled parts of me that I didn’t know were curlable.”

“The way you look at me is illegal in seven states."

Characters
Jason (professional hockey player):
The following words/phrases were used to describe Jason: quick reflexes, the sexiest, most eligible bachelor of hockey, amazing athlete, handsome, witty, kind, gentle, fierce, still grieving.

Jason is a right winger on the Brooklyn Bruisers NHL team. He’s struggling to adjust to his new position on the team (he was a former left winger) and trying to come to terms with his missed goal in the championship game last year. He is surrounded by good teammates and a supportive family. He lost his girlfriend 5 years ago in an accident and he’s still somewhat struggling with that event, so he is not looking for love.

Some quotes about Jason:
“I just spent the summer reading books in a hammock and trying to forget that it was my missed shot on goal that sent us into overtime in game seven of the championship. If I’d rotated my stick two more degrees before I shot, we would have hoisted the cup over our heads at the end of the period. There would have been a parade through Brooklyn and all the other bullshit that comes with being top dog.”

“I only hook up with randoms. Hockey is my life, and there’s no room for emotional entanglements.”

“So I’m a whiner when I’m tired. Sue me.”

Heidi (aka Hot Pepper) (intern at the Brooklyn Bruisers organization):
The following words/phrases were used to describe heroine: full of personality, polite, nice, perky, fearless, sassy, lacks self confidence

Heidi Jo is the daughter of the NHL commissioner and was raised to be a polite, southern girl (she even went to charm school). She’s been the good girl following the rules, but is trying to find herself. This has led to a rift between Heidi and her father and Heidi spreading her wings and trying a few new things (like swearing 🤬 and tequila shots 🥃). 😁

Some quotes about Heidi:
“I spent the first twenty years of my life trying to be Daddy’s good little girl. But it’s impossible to please that man, and I am done trying.”

“Heidi Jo?”
“That’s what my family calls me. But I call myself Heidi so I don’t sound so…”
“Gone with the Wind?”

“Heidi is like a category-four hurricane when she wants something. Who wouldn’t want that kind of gale force on his side?”

The Story:
Jason and Heidi have been dancing around their attraction for awhile but things are about to change. While they navigate what they mean to each other or even what they want to mean to each other, they individually have their own struggles that add to the confusion.

Jason is having a rough start to his season now that they switched his position. He was the “Overnight Sensation” last year and this year he is struggling to get comfortable in his new position. Heidi is having a rough start to her intern role now that her dad has interfered. Also, Heidi has decided it’s time to take risks and break out of the “polite” role that has been ingrained in her.

Heidi makes it clear she wants some really good sex (for a change) and she’s confident Jason can deliver. Meanwhile, Jason hasn’t fully recovered from the loss of his girlfriend so he has some internal battles he is trying to deal with.

So, these two have a lot going on and some clear obstacles that impact their HEA.

“I feel about Heidi the way I feel about the last cookie in the cookie jar—I should resist, but I don’t really want to.”

“Jason Castro is still attracted to me. No matter that I puked when we were supposed to be hooking up, and no matter that my daddy wants to kill him.”

“I swear to God, this girl is like my personal Kryptonite. Even in a dumpy polyester uniform she makes my blood quicken.”

“She’s like a beam of sunshine. And my cloudy ass could really use some of that.”

My Thoughts:
The following are my thoughts about this book:
- Drunk Heidi was funny.
“I might as well wear a sign that says, I’m the fuckup you accuse me of being.” Then she claps a hand over her mouth. “I don’t usually drop f-bombs. That was pretty fun, though.” She giggles. “Fuck. Fuckity fuckity fuck fuck…” Hiccup.”

- Heidi and the Tesla 🏎 💨
“I glance at Heidi in the front seat. Her eyes are locked onto the road, her sleek arms gripping the wheel like she’s a NASCAR driver in formal wear. She’s completely focused. “A hundred,” I gasp as the speedometer shows triple digits. “You did it. Feel free to slow down.”

- Heidi’s dad was an ass and I loved how she didn’t let him intimidate her. She had a backbone. 👍

- 🤣🤣 Welcome to real life....
“ I give the panties a tug, but they don’t give way. Maybe that only works in porn.”

- Jason singing Heidi’s praises to her dad was awesome 👏👏
“She works really hard. I just want you to know that. She tackles the jobs you assigned to her, and she has a side hustle to earn more money.” I shake my head, thinking of all the hours Heidi works. “And she’s a good friend. She’s looking after my teammate who just had knee surgery. And she planned a birthday surprise for my roommate. She’s a good worker, and a good person. She’s impressive. If I were you, I’d be proud, not angry.”

- Jason and Heidi had great chemistry 🔥

- The mascot brawl 🐟 🥊 🐻😂
“I’m deeply embarrassed about the whole thing—about losing a fight to a stuffed fish and about letting him get me so riled up. I didn’t even know I was capable of that kind of blood lust. All the battle scenes in Outlander make more sense to me now.”

- Omg.....so true😁👍
“A snow storm is like a man. You never know how long it will go or how many inches you’re getting.”

- Towards the end I got a little irritated at Jason. His actions made it feel like there would be no one that would measure up to his first love and I thought Heidi deserved better than that.

- The little twist with the dad at the end didn’t ring true. If he couldn’t give Heidi her trust fund because of what he did, why was he pushing her to go to an expensive college? It was more believable when he was just being a jerk.

- Heidi was full of surprises and I loved that.

- No epilogue 👎👎😏

Overall:
Overall, this was a good story. I liked the dynamics of the hockey teammates and their camaraderie. There wasn’t a typical asshole teammate and it was nice to see how they supported each other.

Jason was a good guy and had good values. He’s sexy and charming and his habit of quoting Shakespeare and Dickens was endearing. Heidi was awesome and I really admired her. She was a hard worker and didn’t complain about the jobs her father forced her to do. She was smart, funny and had a positive outlook, no matter the situation. When the book started, it kind of felt like she was a pampered princess. By the end of the book it was clear she had a different idea of who she wanted to be and I felt she had a lot of growth in this book. I was definitely a fan of hers! I liked Jason and Heidi together, I just wish Jason’s dead girlfriend wasn’t hanging over their heads.

This is not the first Brooklyn Bruisers book, but you don’t need to read the others to understand this one. There is some humor, low angst, character growth and chemistry. I usually have good luck with a Sarina Bowen book, and this was no exception.

Quotes
“Somebody pinch me, and please let it be him.”

“She lifts a hand and shows me her…pinky finger.
“What does that mean?” I ask as I finally catch up to her.
“It means I want to give you the finger but I’m too polite.”

“I thought you had no marketable skills? Getting out of tickets is nothing to sneeze at.”

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I loved this book! I have only been reading Sarina Bowen's work for about a year now but she has quickly become an author that I trust to deliver great romances and she totally delivered with this book. This book is the fifth book in the Brooklyn Bruisers series but it was the first book from the series that I have read and it worked well on its own. Of course, now I am ready to go back and get the other books read since I liked this one so much.

This story is all about Heidi and Jason. Heidi, an intern, lets her inhibitions go for one night and wants to hook up with the team's sexy hockey player, Jason. Unfortunately, she has way too much to drink and ends up sleeping it off at his house instead. It wouldn't be a big deal except for the photo of them together that is making the rounds and the fact that Heidi is actually the commissioner's daughter. As the pair spends more and more time with each other, they decide that they just can't stay away from each other.

Heidi and Jason were both great characters. Heidi has lived a rather sheltered and spoiled life. She knows this but she also isn't afraid of hard work. I liked how she was willing to do what was needed to get what she wants. It seemed that no matter how terrible the job was she approached it with the best attitude possible. Jason doesn't do relationships and hasn't for a long time. He is more of a one night stand kind of guy but he wants more with Heidi. It was great learning about Jason's past and finding out what he was really thinking.

I loved these two together! They just seemed to fit perfectly together. They had fantastic chemistry with each other and there are quite a few sexy moments in the story. I liked the way that he looked out for her and vice versa. They both showed that they were willing to stand up for each other and just be there for support when necessary. It does take Jason some time to completely open up to Heidi about his past but I liked watching them work through everything.

I would highly recommend this book to others. This was a great romance with fantastic characters. I loved the fact that there was quite a bit of hockey worked into the story and the side characters were just as great as Jason and Heidi. I ended up reading this entire book in a single day because I literally could not put it down. I cannot wait to read more from this amazing author!

I received a digital review copy of this book from the author/publicist.

Initial Thoughts
So, so good! I loved Heidi and Jason! Both characters were very well done and the chemistry between them was amazing. The challenges that they had to overcome seemed realistic to me. This one was just a whole lot of fun to read.

Simplemente Sensacional!

“She likes show tunes. You’re a showboat. I think it’s a sign. . .”

Post Reading Thoughts

I don't know what it is about Brooklyn Bruisers series, but I am just slowly and steadily coming to own and read each one. Sarina Bowen is a weird author for me. Her collaborative series Him is one of my all time favorites. I really love The Year We Fell Down (which i believe i'm in the minority with that opinion), and yet some of her other books take me months to finish. Basically I never know what I'm gonna get with a Sarina Bowen book. I might get half-way through and just stop. Or it might end up being my next favorite book! And I have to say Overnight Sensation falls into the "next favorite book" camp. I bought this book on a whim (it was on sale what can i say) and ended up not being able to put it down!

Plus it doesn't hurt that this book was my kryptonite - ✨ a hockey romance ✨ What can I say I have a soft spot for dudes who ice skate while bashing into each other. And it gives me a chance to dig up some truly glorious hockey gifs, as demonstrated above ;)

A Brief Synopsis

Overnight Sensation focuses on the romance between Heidi Jo Pepper and Jason Castro. Heidi Jo is a former rich girl who has been forced by her father to work the minimum wage jobs at the Brooklyn Bruisers skating arena (?) as a punishment for her dropping out of college. Jason is the hockey player whose been dubbed an "overnight sensation". He and Heidi Jo have a pretty hilarious drunken interaction that eventually causes them to end up living together. Also, there's some hockey happening in the background.

The Highlights

Heidi Jo Pepper - AKA. "Hot Pepper" ✦ You guys. I know I've said in the past I want to emulate other characters, but I'm for real this time. Heidi Jo is just so aspirational it's not even funny. For being a "spoiled rich girl" Heidi is not only funny, sweet, and caring, but she's also so resourceful, smart, and has a keen eye for business. Over the course of the book she proves to herself and to anyone who doubted her, that she never needed her dads money all along. Not only that, but throughout Overnight Sensation we see Heidi look inwards at herself, her situation, and what it truly means to be "spoiled". This self-reflection is what made me just plain old love her as a character and it truly showed the multi-faceted person she was on the inside.

Daddy had it all wrong. It’s not the jobs you work or the brand of your shoes. Spoiled is not having to look into the darkness.

Another thing that just made Heidi special was the way in which she had this innate confidence in herself. She wasn't cocky but there was a self-assuredness to her that young women so often lack. She trusted and believed in herself (even when things were a bit shaky) and you could see that people admired and respected her for it. Plus it was always great to see her put the guys on the hockey team in their place. It had me cheering and clapping for her like a true proud mama (even though she's has her shit together a lot more than I do).

“He’s the most over-coached forward in the league this week. Y’all just stand around yapping, which won’t help. It’s all muscle memory, for Pete’s sake! This man needs you to snap five thousand passes his way, so his body can figure it out. He doesn’t need your advice.”

yeah that quote deserves a victory finger point if you ask me

Heidi was not only resourceful (i.e. her Bell Pepper Business) but the way in which she cared about the people around her was amazing as well. From her relationship with Jason, to her friendship with Silas, and even the way she took care of Eric, it showed just what a caring and kind soul she was. Her character was a great take on the "spoiled rich girl" trope that we so often see. Even though Heidi Jo could be considered a "princess" she was so much more than that and proved it throughout the book.

Also Heidi Jo's fight while in a bear costume with the fish mascot was a true ✨ i c o n ✨ moment -

Jason Castro - AKA "The Overnight Sensation"

this man doesn't even remotely match Jason Castro's description but i couldn't resist adding this gif in here anyway. . .look at his flowing helmet hair

I really liked Jason Castro. I'm sure if that's a controversial statement or not (i've seen some mixed feelings on him), but I thought he was a solid male lead and part of what made this book so enjoyable. I liked his character development, I liked how he recognized how damn lucky he was that Heidi Jo wanted to be with him, and I liked watching him step out of his comfort zone and learn to open up. Jason while not a groundbreaking hero by any means still had a story that I was interested in reading. Watching him deal with his grief was heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time.

That’s what nobody ever tells you about grief—it’s exhausting, and you’re never really done with it.

I also want to give Jason major props for the way he handled his relationship with Heidi Jo. Once he realized that he wanted her and couldn't fight his attraction to her, he was all in. There never seemed to be any doubts of if he wanted her. Instead it was more a matter of when he would own up to the feelings he had for her. And once he did own up to his feelings he seemed to realize that Heidi Jo was probably the best girl he'd ever get, therefore he better do everything in his power to keep her happy. I think if Sarina Bowen wanted to take this book in a different direction she could've totally made Heidi Jo and Jason's romance into a "one who got away" direction. Because honestly, Heidi Jo was amazing and perfect and she deserved all the page 1 flowers. All in all, I liked Jason a lot BUT while he might be on the cover Heidi stole the spotlight in this book.

The Side-Characters ✦ Man reading this book has me wanting to re-read Eric's book (which I just spent a couple hours revising so you should totally check it out ;) and has me debating whether or not I should spend 5 dollars for Silas's book. I think one of my favorite parts about this book, and the Brooklyn Bruisers series as a whole, has been the men of the Brooklyn Bruiser ice hockey team. They really help each book in this series to come alive and Overnight Sensation was no exception. Silas was a real standout from this book and I greatly enjoyed his bromance with Jason. I also really loved the friendships each of the guys formed with Heidi and the way they really respected her. Plus, I could not have been the only one who was devastated for Silas when his surprise birthday plans fell through!

The Romance ✦ The romance in Overnight Sensation was really sweet and one of my favorite parts of the book! I loved how it started with Heidi and Jason not looking for something super serious and then the next thing they knew they're in a relationship. In addition I thought these two had such great chemistry as fiends. Their relationship felt so solid and strong because you could see the genuine admiration and respect they developed with each other while being friends. This one of the few instances where I thought them starting as friends, then moving to "friends with benefits", and finally settling into an exclusive relationship, was the right course of action. They needed that little in between as "friends with benefits" to see that they could work both as friends and as more.

The mark of a good man isn’t the way he speaks to me when he’s trying to impress. It’s in the way he speaks to all the little people in his life—the doorman, the taxi driver, the bartender.

Any Negatives

✦ The Ending Felt Rushed ✦ Overnight Sensation is one of those books that when it ends you feel like you just bashed into a wall.

One second Jason and Heidi are good and being cute and the next second their broken up because d r a m a + #DeadGirfriendGuilt. And then the next second they're together, Heidi is telling off her dad, and BOOM the book ends. There was no epilogue - or if there was you had to click on some link which no thanks - and I'm sorry but I need an epilogue. I just. . .I need an epilogue. I don't care if that sounds bad its just how I feel. I wanted a bit more of a resolution to Heidi and Jason's romance, I wanted a bigger discussion between Heidi and her father, and I wanted to see how Heidi had eventually taken over the world! I wanted more GOSH DARNIT. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Heidi and Jason just yet.

My Final Thoughts

Overnight Sensation was a pretty big win for me! I'm really glad that I decided to check this one out because I ended up loving Heidi Jo Pepper's story. She was such a great heroine and the romance world needs more heroines like her! Jason was a pretty good hero as well and together their romance is something worth reading. If you've enjoyed any of Sarina Bowen's hockey romance books before then I highly recommend Overnight Sensation . Also. . .hockey players are just hot. I mean anyone who can ice skate while simultaneously avoiding getting bashed into a wall immediately has my attention ;)

👑✨ Also, here is some truly superb closing wisdom from Heidi Jo Pepper ✨👑 -

A snow storm is like a man. You never know how long it will go or how many inches you’re getting.

I have to admit that I only read 2 Brooklyn Bruisers books before this one. One was the one right before this one: Brooklynaire - which I loved! And then I obviousely read the amazing True North Series - of which Bountiful had a Bruisers player in it too! ☺

So now here is Heidi and Jason's book.

I really love Heidi! With her adorable accent! I tried reading her scenes in an accent - very talent-free I have to admit! ☺

And Castro is just as adorable! Poor guy. So attracted to this off-limits girl!

I love his friendship with his room mate Silas. Can't wait to get his book with the pop star!!!

And as if Heidi being the daughter of the league's boss was not bad enough - poor Jason also has some sad mysteries in his past that make him think he will never fall in love again.

Plus he's not really playing his best hockey at the moment, but he really wants to stay with the team...

And poor Heidi? With her idiot daddy! She sooo wants Rebecca's old job working for the team, but her dad wants her to go back to college.

Lots and lots of things to overcome until we can ride off into a happily ever after sunset!

Such an adorable story!

I'm not the biggest hockey romance fan - that's why I'm so late to join this series!

But I really love what I've seen so far!

I love the team, the owners, the players, the atmosphere.

And of course Heidi and Jason. They so belong together, but it'll be really hard to get to that happy end!

But we love every second of their journey!

The book was funny, sad, heartbreaking, sweet, hockey-ish, Brooklyn-ish ... and so much more!

I'm sad to not have started this series with book #1 - I hope I'll find time to read them all one day! #MegaBusyReadingCalendarBloggerLife ☹

OVERNIGHT SENSATION was such an adorable and fun and sweet and heartbreaking Hockey Romance!!! Run to your nearest amazon asap - Heidi & Jason will be sold out in no time!

Oh, this book was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Heidi and Jason shined in this hockey-infused story about life-altering moments and forging new paths…

Heidi was a rich girl but she was so much more than that. Funny and sweet, bold and brash, she was so many things in one compassionate and practical package. She wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself – or others – and she did it all with humour and class…

Jason was a handsome, talented hockey player who didn’t have commitment in his vocabulary. Heidi turned him – and his beliefs – on their ear, as she not so quietly, but very competently, won him over.

Their romantic dance had all the things! Heated moments (totally fan-worthy!), sweet conversations and romantic hiccups. Throw in a hockey team that were really family as well as parental units that stirred the pot, well, it was reading perfection.

I don’t want to start another book because then I would have to put this story behind me and I’m not ready to let it go. If you haven’t met the Bruisers then you must if only to read Heidi and Jason’s story but trust me, you will want them all. So, so freakin’ good… ~Diane, 5 stars

Overnight Sensation is the fifth book in the Brooklyn Bruisers series. The first thought I had was how great it was to be back with the whole team! I enjoyed reading series a lot because we get to see previous characters, previous couples. With the Brooklyn Bruisers, it’s like you get together with friends you haven’t seen for a long time. And the cherry on the cake is having Castro’s story.

“You and I are going to be a thing.”
“A thing? What’s that?”
“It’s whatever we want it to be. It’s our thing.”

Jason Castro is a laid-back guy, always there to crack a joke and entertain his teammates. But Jason has also a dark side, one he never shows, one no friends know about.
Jason was so easy to love. Charming, respectful, loyal but also a gentleman with a dirty mind, he was the perfect match if it wasn't for his aversion to relationship.

Heiidi Jo Pepper is what you can call a good girl. One who has been raised to act a certain way, to think and to do things a certain way... so you can imagine she finds all this extremely boring. What she wants is a bit of dirt and why not experience with the guy she has her eyes on: Jason Castro

From the beginning until the end, there’s not a second I didn’t enjoy while reading Overnight Sensation. Jason & Heidi’s banter was funny and entertaining. I love them as friends and the way they fall for each other was sweet and felt natural which to me is important to believe they can be happy together.

But when everything seems said and done, darkness is around the corner. Past come to threaten some of the happiness. Jason will have to decide to just let go or to stay in his own head forever.

If you are looking for some sporty romance without drama but lots of hotness and incredible characters, look no further, Overnight Sensation is the perfect choice.

I love this series (and Sarina's writing)! Castro is a 'still waters run deep' kind of guy, which I was not entirely expecting, plus Heidi and her ambition are enviable—the girl's got moxie I'll give her that. I really enjoyed this one!

This is the perfect 2nd entry to the new series by Sarina Bowen. We have all the players and then more...We get to have the growing relationship of the Forbidden with Jason and Heidi. He is the Hockey guy who is trying to stay on track. She is the intern who has been working towards a permanent position with the team.

Only everything doesn't happen as planned...
Jason is trying as hard as he can to stay away from Heidi, no matter how much he is attracted to her...And Heidi has to deal with her overbearing father, who just happens to be the Commissioner of all of Hockey! Jason knows doing anything with Heidi could end his career and Heidi is determined to show her father she can handle any job he throws at her...which causes her to move out of Daddy's penthouse and become the 3rd roommate in Jason's apartment.

We get to be the fly on the wall as these two juggle and deal with off-the-charts sexual attraction. The close quarters allow for more insight into who the other person truly is and assumptions are proven not to be the case.

I loved this story and was surprised as at first, I wasn't team Heidi...but she totally proved me wrong. She wasn't as spoiled as I thought and she dug deep to show everyone she meant business in her devotion to achieving her career goals. She also was able to be the right one for our Jason.

Sarina Bowen has been on a roll for quite some time with all of the books she has been producing. She puts her heart and humor in everyone, making them a joy to read. Our next book should be something special...I am hoping it is Silas.

3.5? 3.75????

I'm round up because of Heidi Jo. That girl are funneee. Heidi Jo had me cackling so much during the bear vs. fish fight that my sides hurt. She's spunky, fiery and driven.

Her father is the league commissioner and he's pissed that she dropped out of Bryn Mawr so he decides to put her in the penalty box, so to speak, by making her do menial jobs for the Brooklyn Bruisers. But he underestimates his daughter.

She is a trooper. Not only does she do all these crappy jobs but she's good at them. She's observant and uses some of the things she's witnessing to strengthen her relationship with Becca (new team owner) AND she starts her own delivery service for the team. By the time all is said and done everyone thinks Heidi Jo is going to run the world. She's that capable.

Castro is her crush and she's determined to get the team hit and run artist to "inspect her suspension". Even though she has zero experience at seductressing, she's intuitive and determined which means Jason Castro doesn't stand a chance.

Castro's pretty funny in his own rite and he's a great teammate. He's protective and possessive of Heidi but she's not afraid to give him the business when he gets all caveman on her.

The sex is pretty standard SB fare. Castro's a little bossier than some, but still not too far off the reservation.

Things started off so well then the fizzling started to occur with Jason's wishy-washiness. He whirls around more than a weathervane.

From shutting her down because she's the commish's daughter and because he's a one and done kinda guy to schmoopy SUPER BOYFRIEND to icing her out like a polar vortex to ILY?

That ILY came out of nowhere and did not resonate. I get that he's struggling with the abrupt and tragic loss of his high school sweetheart and is bad at making the words, but the flips happened so fast it was hard to believe in the HFN.

Heidi Jo should get all the bone melting sex she can stand then...

Because craycraybenaynay.

I wish I had liked this as much as I initially thought I was going to but I will still read the next one which I'm guessing is about Silas and the singer that I'm pretty sure he has a history with, though I was so hoping it would be Bayer there for a minute. That dude needs a happy in a baaaaadddd way.

Remember, I'm kind of a hardass so grain of salt, people. Grain of salt... YMMV.

Two major triggers for me in this book:
1st: death of a loved one- hero’s high school girlfriend dies and he’s messed up ( what a surprise 😒-NOT) and I can feel the second best from miles away. What leads me to the

2nd: heroine is main pursuer of relationship. 😏🧐🤔 and 341 pages?! 🤭🙁😨

Overnight Sensation was the fifth book in the (NHL) Brooklyn Bruisers series by Serena Bowen.

We met Jason Castro in the previous books as a playful, flirty playboy but also an up and coming forward for the Bruisers. He was doing well but still learning the NHL. This year he started in a rut, was moved from Left Wing to Right Wing and was finding his way in his new position. We also learned his hockey superstitions and his backstory on why he doesn’t do relationships. I enjoyed getting to know him and fell in love with his playful, yet disciplined attitude.

Heidi Pepper was also introduced in the previous book but was still somewhat a mystery and had played out more as a sheltered society girl who landed the coveted internship as a result of family connections. We learn quickly in Overnight Sensation that not everything was as it seemed and there was much more to Heidi than meets the eye. I fell in love with her snarky attitude, quick wit, humor, creativity and determination. She was the perfect match for Jason.

I loved everything about Overnight Sensation. Well except the Tampa bash - really Bowen? #gobolts. But I digress....I loved the characters. I loved the storyline. I loved the humor. I loved the sexy connection. And although emotional at times, I loved their backstories and how they overcame them. There wasn’t much angst or drama, other than typical life, hockey, job and relationship challenges; which was a refreshing change and still kept me captivated.

Bowen also included intriguing and lovable secondary characters where Bruisers teammates Silas and Bayer were front and center; which means we’ll get their stories soon. I have my opinions on where Bowen will take us, but regardless of where we land, I’m totally ready for the adventure.

2019 Update: The author made a change for this as the second book in the Brooklyn series apparently pulling it out of the Brooklyn Bruisers series.

Overnight Sensation scores big and delivers a healthy dose of sugar, a hint of spice, and a whole lot of nice.

Heidi Jo Pepper (aka “Hot Pepper”) steals the show in this book. The woman is a firecracker—remarkably resourceful, with a sharp mind, quick wit, huge heart, and infectious charm. I enjoyed her relentless pursuit of Jason Castro, the hot hockey playboy who is determined to remain single.

Jason is dealing with a sudden self-confidence problem, and Heidi has a lot to prove to herself and her loved ones. They support each other perfectly, and I was totally on board for the sparks they create in the bedroom as well. The various odd jobs Heidi undertakes provide endless opportunities for hilarious hijinks. I also enjoyed the camaraderie with Jason’s roommate, Silas. I hope we have his story to look forward to in the future.

I rarely comment on book covers but… this book deserves a better cover in my not so humble opinion. It’s a personal preference kind of thing, but the rather smarmy-looking shirtless dude doesn’t appeal to me. The cover doesn’t scream funny, cute, or even sexy to me—and this feel-good romance is all those things. If I didn’t know and love Sarina Bowen’s work I might have passed on this winning story, but I’m so glad I didn’t.
