Another fun outing for Cranberryport. Mr. Whiskers good friend Seth is lonely and he’s about to sell his store and move. He’s old and his wife died. The easter egg hunt will not happen this year. Mr. Whiskers and our favorite grandmother plot to fix this situation. Of course, it all neatly wraps up and Seth stays and the easter Egg hunt happens.

It’s cute how it all wraps up. I do love seeing Mr. Whiskers jumping around in one giant bunny suit at the end. That was hilarious and the kids laughed and laughed at that bunny. The nephew thought this was a good ending and he gave it 3 stars. The niece figured the story out and guessed what was going to happen. She gave this 2 stars. It wasn’t her favorite of the series, but she thought the bunny was funny.

These Cranberryport books are so nostalgic for me (even though I don’t remember actually reading them during my childhood) so bonus points for the warm-fuzzies. So much good neighborliness and small-town charm. It feels like a New England coastal version of “When Calls the Heart” with Hagrid in the mix. The Easter aspect doesn’t really come into play until midway through the story, so there isn’t a lot of Easter ambiance (and, admittedly, I’ve always found this type of EB costume rather disturbing) and I don’t think it’s my favorite in the series, but it’s a sweet story.

When Mr. Whiskers learns that his old friend Seth, who runs the general store in Cranberryport, is thinking of closing up shop and moving south, the New England villager is dismayed. Maggie's grandmother is also dismayed, as two of her friends are likewise thinking of moving, as they find the countryside in winter too difficult to navigate. Fortunately, a solution is found, in the rooms above Seth's store, and the Cranberryport villagers thinking of leaving decide to stay. The story concludes with a very happy Easter, as the children hunt for eggs and Mr. Whiskers dresses up as the Easter Bunny...

Originally published in 1990, Cranberry Easter was the seventh entry in Wende and Harry Devlin's Cranberryport picture-book series, devoted to the adventures of Mr. Whiskers, Maggie and Grandmother, in their New England village next to a cranberry bog. My library doesn't hold every title in the series, so it is only the fifth I have read thus far, of the fifteen books in the collection. In any case, it was an engaging story, one which emphasizes community solidarity - neighbors helping neighbors. Like many of the other titles in the series, it has a cranberry recipe at the rear, this time for Cranberry Cobbler. Recommended to fans of the Devlins' Cranberryport books, and to picture-book readers looking for lighthearted stories set at Easter.

As the pussy willows bloom in Cranberry Port, Mr. Whiskers is surprised to discover that Seth will not be conducting the annual Easter egg hunt. Seth has decided to sell the General Store and head south. Maggie comes up with a plan to change Seth's mind to stay in Cranberry Port, where he is needed the most. The end of the story has a recipe for Cranberry Cobbler.

We've enjoyed reading the books in the Cranberryport series and will certainly look for more. This one has an Easter theme, perfect for this time of year, but it also has a message about helping others. The illustrations are humorous and the story is fun to read aloud.

There's a yummy looking recipe at the back of the book and since we have to return the book to the library, I'm copying it here and we'll have to see if we can make it soon!

Cranberry cobbler

Filling
3 cups fresh cranberries
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Butter a 10-inch pie plate, spread the cranberries over the bottom, and sprinkle with sugar and chopped walmuts or pecans. Stir together right in the pie plate and smooth out.

Crust

2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup butter, cut in small pieces with a knife

Beat eggs in a bowl until light. Continue to beat, and gradually add first the sugar and then the flour. Finally, cut in the butter.

When crust mixture is thoroughly combined and smooth, spread over filling mixture. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes, or until the crust browns.

Serve hot or cold, with or without whipped cream (or ice cream - yum!)

I enjoy the Cranberryport series. I want to collect as many as I can. Mr. Whiskers "suffering codfish," grandmother, Maggie, and now Seth are fun characters I like to visit and so does my little girl. Want to try all the recipes. This book has a cranberry cobbler recipe. After the title of each recipe it says, Ask Mother or Father to help. Charmingly quirky stories.

This was a delightful book about 'older' folks coming together to help one another when they were lonely and thought they would have to move away from Cranberryport. Friends helping one another...It also cooperated Easter and the importance of love and compassion and caring toward one another. My 2 year old granddaughter enjoyed it also

"Cranberry Thanksgiving" was a family favorite so I was delighted to spot this one at my local library. Mr. Whiskers is back, this time bringing together lonely seniors in the community and making sure the children have their egg hunt. There is something about this series that is very charming. Nostalgic fun.

Seth, the owner of Cranberryport's General Store, is feeling rather down this year. He's planning to cancel the Easter egg hunt, sell his business, and move south. Can Mr. Whiskers, Maggie, and Grandmother convince him to stay?

While it's not the best in the Cranberryport series, this one is certainly worth a read.
