A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls

Rate this book
Actress Carrie Murray’s films are a Christmas lover’s delight. Filled with twinkling lights, festive carols, and happy endings, they’re the perfect escape from reality—for her and the audience. Then Tinseltown calls.

Braxton Timothy is Hollywood’s biggest action star. Handsome and talented but decidedly on the naughty list, no one can fathom his sudden desire to produce a feel-good Christmas movie—least of all, his no-name co-star.

Alternating between scenes reminiscent of everyone’s favorite made-for-TV movies and unexpected, off-screen chemistry, Gingerbread Falls has surprises in store this holiday season. The question is, will there be enough Christmas magic to convince two imperfect people that they’re perfect for each other?

Carrie Murray and Braxton Timothy are actress and actor starring in a film being shot in Gingerbread Falls. They play Noelle and Carson; Noelle Butler is a coffee shop owner and Carson Stark is a managing director.

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was an engrossing story within a story. I thought it was fantastic; the plot, the different points of view, the characters. I enjoyed reading about the romances as well as all of the drama. The Christmassy aspects were tremendous, and the reader also learned of Carrie's and Braxton's troubled pasts. For anyone expecting a merely a syrupy, saccharine romance this is not it as there are multiple layers including trauma, darkness, abuse, upset, disturbing parts, risquéness though there are dollops of humour. All in all a riveting, delectable festive tale I'm pleased to have read.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Breaking Night Press via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Carrie and Braxton are actors who are shooting a movie at Gingerbread Falls. And like a lot of reviewers have already said it, this book could have been a movie in itself. This story is their journey of getting to know each other, understanding each other's actions and healing through the process, all while shooting for a movie. The way they go from reel to real was truly heartwarming.

This book was nothing like I imagined it to be with the cute title and cover. It was at times dark with themes including past baggage and trauma but it does has its share of romance, humour and of course, the magic of Christmas sprayed all over it. I loved the communication (and the miscommunication) between the lead characters.

It was fast paced and I was always interested in turning the page because the characters were very realistic with their doubts and flaws. Definitely recommended.

I love reading Christmas books any day of the month.  When I saw the title I hoping to get a chance to read A Christmas At Gingerbread Falls. Like some of the reviewer have said it felt like a hallmark movie that's not a bad thing.  I could see this book come to life a 5 star read

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls is a festive holiday movie wrapped up with big red bow in a heartwarming romance book. I loved this story! It definitely put me in holiday state of mind. The heroine, actress Carrie Murray, and the hero, Hollywood action star Braxton Timothy, are both deeply scarred from their traumatic pasts, but when they come together to film a movie for the Christmas Channel, they can’t deny their chemistry. You can’t help but keep turning the pages as this engaging romance shifts between their snowy real life love story and the heartwarming Christmas movie they are filming. As they are drawn closer together, the complex emotional layers are peeled back. And they end up helping each other find the courage that’s needed to heal. In their love for each other they are able to find the strength to forge a loving future together. Big dreamy sigh.

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was a dualistic romance. Katie Mettner described a beautiful “Christmas Channel” movie sweet-dating experience on screen, and paired it with a real-life romance, full of flaws and secrets.
Carrie Murray plays Noel, a small-town barista in a fantastically festive town. Braxton Timothy is her co-star. His character is Carson, a doctor who is running from his past and falls for Noel. Off-screen, Carrie tries to ice out Braxton’s advances. After all, he’s a big-time movie star with a list of broken-hearted Hollywood starlets weeping after him. However, when Carrie starts to see the sincerity in his words, will she be able to deny her feelings for him?
It was a great story with several layers. The characters in the story are multi-dimensional, revealing pieces of themselves as the story progresses. The feel-good, Christmas sweet romance is portrayed while Carrie and Braxton play Noel and Carson, and a flawed, but sexy, attraction sizzles off-screen between Carrie and Braxton.
The book was an audiobook, and the voice cast was fantastic. Even though I enjoy voice actors who can read both male and female parts, I was glad that the female parts were read by Marnye Young, and the male parts were read by Eric Altheide. The two artists worked well together, and it was a lot like listening to a movie.
I recommend A CHRISTMAS AT GINGERBREAD FALLS for mature readers, as there are several steamy parts and sexual references.

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was an adorable and emotion filled Christmas story. With snow falling, a Christmas town setting, and filming a Hallmarkish movie there was a lot of heart in the pages. If you enjoy Christmas stories, then you may want to put this one on your tbr list!
“I do enough of these movies, I should be overflowing with the stuff,” she huffed, her breath puffing frosty white rings into the air.
“Overflowing with what stuff?” a voice asked.
Carrie whirled around and slipped on a patch of snow, falling right into the waiting arms of Braxton.
H
e grinned down at her cheekily. “This is getting to be a habit.”

This was unlike any other Christmas story I have read, it was truly unique! Carrie Murray and Braxton Timothy were filming a movie that screamed Hallmark Christmas movie. And we not only alternated between Carrie and Braxton, but also between their real lives and the scenes they filmed in the movie too. The scenes they were filming were heartwarming, delightful and the perfect amount of cheesiness! But while they were filming, it was hard to keep their real lives from bleeding into their characters’ lives and vice versa. There was heat between them and quite possibly more!
While the crew worked around them, neither Brax nor Carrie moved away from the front of the tree. Carrie felt him lean into her ear and held her breath, wondering what he was about to say. “That was one of the best Christmas memories I’ve ever made.”
“That wasn’t real, Brax,” Carrie answered with her gaze fixed on the tree lights.
“It felt real to me,” he promised, his breath warm on her cheek.

But Carrie and Braxton in real life? They were sexier and way more heart broken and jaded then their Hallmark counterparts. While they were attracted to one another, Braxton had a playboy past and Carrie was the queen at keeping those around her at arms lengths away. As the story unfolded, we get to see that they were both haunted by their tragic pasts. And both of their pasts were extremely heavy, very dark and intense on the heart. So I kept hoping they could help one another heal, they both needed that. With some light hearted humor, some sexier moments, and heart wrenching back stories, this book thankfully sailed us into a happily ever after!
“CUT!” Simpson yelled, whipping the earphones off his head . “What the hell, Brax? This movie is for The Christmas Channel! You can’t kiss her until the very end!”
Brax finally tore his gaze from Carrie’s to address the director. “What happens if I don’t wait?”

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was a fun Christmas tale! But unfortunately for me, I was never able to connect to either of the characters. For me to love and enjoy a story with my whole heart, I desperately need that connection. And I wasn’t able to find that click with either Carrie or Braxton. So if you pick this one up, fingers crossed you click and I can’t wait to hear all of your thoughts and your emotions while reading this story!

Sometimes, Christmas comes early. Such is the case with A Christmas At Gingerbread Falls. Katie Mettner weaves together two stories with impeccable wit and charm.

Carrie is the queen of Christmas movies and Braxton the king of the big screen, come together to film a holiday classic.

The only love Carrie plans on experiencing during her stay is through the camera lens, but looks are deceiving and Braxton may be her knight in shining armor.

Things come easy to Braxton, with the exception of the one woman who’s captivated his mind and spirit, but he’s not letting Carrie go without a fight.

Beyond the beautiful romance lies two very human characters—flawed and broken and embittered by the choices they made…or choices made for them.

However, they find in each other the very things they believed didn’t exist in this world—at least, not for them.

Seems love is always the answer. The only answer.

A stunningly visual story that captivates the heart and spirit. I’ve never looked more forward to the Christmas holiday and the magic that time of year seems to bring.

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by Katie Mettner is filled with sugar and spice, and it gives the reader a bit of naughty along with the nice. If you are looking for the Christmas movie that you see on the Hallmark Channel, you’ll want to look elsewhere because this wonderfully written book has some childhood trauma along with steamy bedroom scenes.

Mettner is a master at including real dialogue and great communication between the main characters… well, eventually with the communication because you have to have some miscommunication and drama first. While I read her books for the excellent bedroom scenes, what I really enjoy about her writing style is the in depth dialogue and deep thoughts (and past events) that have happened to her characters. When you read Mettner’s books you don’t get sickly sweet characters, but real life people with flaws and baggage that they are able to work through with the help of the love interest, as well as themselves.

If you are looking for a Christmas romance that would make Santa blush, then A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls should be added to your list.

Katie always writes stories with heart. In this story, her characters Carrie and Braxton are actors filming a Christmas movie. In front of the cameras their lives seem perfect. Behind the scenes, however, life isn't all that peachy. They both have trust issues, pasts they'd like to forget, and plenty of scars that only love can heal. The attraction between Carrie and Braxton is off the charts, but they fight it...until they can't. I enjoyed the depth of these two characters and the storyline.

Two heart-warming stories in one.
Katie Mettner is the master at heart-warming. Put Katie and Christmas together, and I’m sold. I loved Christmas at Gingerbread Falls and both intertwined stories inside.

Things this story has that you’ll love:
• A sexy, Hollywood heartthrob that shows just enough vulnerability to make you forget he’s from Hollywood. He’s full of charm, very likable but doesn’t seem ‘too good to be true’ if you know what I mean.
• A leading lady who’s been through hell but is still standing strong, even though she’s fighting some old demons. You’ll love everything about Carrie because she’s so real, and you’ll want to root for her success at every turn.
• A best friend we all wish we had in real life. She’s supportive but honest to the core.
• Setting descriptions that will make you feel like you’re in the middle of a Hallmark movie… or two Hallmark movies.
• TWO beautifully written love stories that will pull you in and keep you reading until the late hours of the night. In this case, it kept me up listening because I had the audiobook.
• An ending that will make you sigh with contentment and satisfaction.

These stories are perfect for the Christmas season and are sure to turn any Grinch into a holiday-loving softy. I loved, loved, loved it so much! I listened to the audiobook, and it’s spectacular in its execution. The seamless and professional production is top-notch, and the narrators are perfect, even though both had to play two different characters.

Make yourself a hot, steaming mug of hot cocoa and wrap-up in your favorite throw before starting this book because once you start, you won’t want to stop. And when you reach the absolutely perfect ending to both stories, you’ll want to start at the beginning again. Five Christmas tree-topping stars for this excellent read!

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by the talented author Katie Mettner is an extremely clever and engaging story that took me by surprise from the start and kept me enthralled until the end.

Say what? You want to know if Santa Claus pays the characters a visit? Well, read on…

The town of Gingerbread Falls is not just another place where sugarplums dance and jolly old elves come to call. This town has magical ‘properties’, due to the imagination of the fabulous author. The premise of this tale is one I wish I’d thought of myself, because it’s enviable and the story, while sweet as a candy cane, dares to be different.

Christmas Carrie, also known as Carrie Murray, also known as – well, never mind, you’ll find out – is fighting a secret crush on her leading man Braxton Timothy, because the movie star is known for his love ‘em and leave ‘em persona. But hey, all is not what it appears to be, according to the creativity of Ms. Mettner. They may both be starring in a Christmas film, but the tippy toing around during their off time is frustrating them, and neither are sure how to fix it.

The problem is these two would-be lovers are damaged goods and once the director of their film yells, “Cut,” they revert to their privacy and only timidly venture out together. So, until certain truths are revealed both professionally, but more importantly – personally, both parties must learn to Handle with Care if you get my drift. (Did I mention PTSD?)

If you believe in Christmas miracles, this is the story for your 2021 Holiday wish list. Five golden stars awarded for a honey of a Christmas story that provided this reader with charm, smiles, and instilled the belief that wishes do come true concerning matters of the heart. Bravo, Ms. Mettner!

Noelle runs a bakery/coffee shop in Gingerbread Falls. She's happy in her life, except for one thing, she is single. But she continues to put on a happy face and focuses on decorating her shop for the annual Christmas storefront contest, which she's won several years in a row. Putting on the final touches while up on a ladder, she falls, but luckily, the new, handsome doctor in town, Carson, catches her...and their romance begins.

CUT!!!

Wait, what?? Turns out that Noelle and Carson are the characters that Carrie and Braxton are playing in a hopefully-to-be Christmas Channel movie. Braxton is a famous Hollywood star, and he has written and is producing this film that he hopes will be picked up by that famous channel that runs holiday movies. He wrote the part of Noelle specifically for Carrie, who has done almost 20 holiday movies in the past. So, while their on-screen personas as living out a holiday movie in Gingerbread Falls, Carrie and Braxton start falling in love off-screen.

This was a cute, fun book with a bit of heat added in. It really was a story that could be on that famous channel one day, it would be fun to watch. There are some heavy subjects covered as well, a few that might require trigger warnings for PTSD and child abuse. Not done in graphic detail but enough to give the characters backstories that aren't all roses and sunshine.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

I love christmas, and yes I know it's only October but I want to feel the happiness and generosity that is in the air at christmas. So why not start now.
This book felt like I stepped into a hallmark movie. Hallmark for me represent a big warm blanket and hot chocolate on a cold winter day. So this was right up my alley.

One issue I had was the book is written in two timelines. One from the movie and the other from the two main characters. I'll admit I found the movie timeline preferable.

It's a really sweet story and perfect to get you into the christmas spirit.

Enjoy!

Boy am I a sucker for a Hallmark holiday movie…and Katie Mettner’s A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was the perfect equivalent! I was “on set” right from the start and absolutely adored the story within a story theme—it worked really well here and brought added depth to these characters.

Mettner quickly got me into the holiday spirit with this one—this is definitely a snuggle-up-on-the-couch-with-a-blanket-and-read-straight-through kinda read!

What a perfect holiday story to kick off the season!

I enjoyed this story within a story. Carrie and Braxton are filming a Christmas movie in Gingerbread Falls while falling in love off screen. The movie storyline is rated G like a Hallmark movie and the real life story is more PG13 like Lifetime. It was a good twist on the usual Christmas romcom.

Two stories one theme. Surviving trauma and learning how to love and trust. Beautifully written. This author knows her craft. The breadth and depth of each character is admirable. Moreover, the dialogue is realistic and believable. A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls is not a syrupy love story. What it is, though, is a practicable look at raw emotion and aberrant circumstances that many may have experienced earlier in life.
Like other works, that I’ve read, her ‘telling’ of tender moments are visceral.
Go behind the scenes of a ‘Hallmark’ movie set! Another great read!

The story has Carrie and Braxton, who are an actress and actor, starring in a movie being filmed in Gingerbread Falls. They play Noelle and Carson, in the movie.
The book reads like a Hallmark movie, but the difference is, the movie part of the story is like that, but Carrie and Braxton's past still haunts them, they have to face their demons, and in order to move forward they have to learn to let some things go.
This is much more than a Christmas story with the Christmas magic, it is about learning to open up, trusting someone, and when it starts being good, you are so scared, and your instinct is to run. What will they do? The chemistry is there between Carrie and Braxton, as well as, Noelle and Carson. This is where the substance of the book comes in, finding out what they each do. It is a journey they have to step into, and they have to start making choices of what they want now.

I was very excited to read this book and have a heartwarming, Christmas love story to get me excited for the Winter season. Unfortunately this book really wasn't for me.

Carrie is an actor who stars in Christmas movies. Braxton is a big time actor who stars in action/adventure movies. Braxton decides he needs a change, and decides to co star with Carrie in a new Christmas film. As the book progresses you learn more about the pairs past traumas and how it affects their current lives as they start to fall for each other and you watch as they try to battle through their pasts to achieve the futures they want.

I found there were some major parts of this book that didn't sit well with me namely regarding Braxton's past and his parents. I found the topic was discussed insensitively and didn't make sense. It felt like both characters were given overly dramatic and traumatising pasts which didn't make sense and weren't developed or discussed well. You're left in the dark about Carrie's past until about half way through the book, when its revealed it seems so unlikely and brushed over that there didn't seem to be any point to it, and there could have been a much simpler explanation for Carrie's personality.

The writing in the book felt repetitive and boring so at the halfway point I was ready for it to finish. I can see how some people could love this story for escapism and a quick Christmas read, but for me there were too many areas that didn't work and left me bored.

The two main characters who make a film together fall for each other but both have their so called backpacks. They're actually both decent backpacks, despite the fact that they're both not that old yet, towards their thirties and early thirties. In my opinion, it was just a little bit too much drama in both of their lives.

Alternately you follow the story of the film making and the story of the two actors, very nicely done as they are indicated with a little drawing. The film story occasionally continued into the real story, well according to the director who occasionally indicated that it could be a little less at this stage of the film.

The village of Gingerbread Falls from the movie sounds like a lovely Christmas village as you see them in the average Christmas movie. You smell, so to speak, the delicacies that the film protagonist sells in her bakery-café.
The story is sweet as Christmas sweets but that just fits into that time of the year.

If Hallmark Channel can show Christmas movies all year, who says I have to wait until November or December to read a Christmas-themed romance? That's what I told myself when I saw this title. I was suffering from late-winter doldrums, and thought I could use an uplifting, lighthearted romance set in a beautiful wintery locale around Christmas time.

"A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls" didn't disappoint! It's the story of a somewhat unknown actress--Carrie Murray--who has appeared in dozens of Christmas rom-coms. She's sweet and wide-eyed; the type of actress you frequently see in Hallmark movies.

Enter Braxton Timothy, the gorgeous Hollywood actor known for his blockbuster action movies. For some reason he's decided to produce a sweet Christmas movie for The Christmas Channel, and wants Carrie to play the lead female lead role against him. Gingerbread Falls in a festive small town, and Noel (Carrie) is a barista and Carson (Braxton) is a doctor who has fled from a larger practice to re-think his life. Of course, sparks fly between the two of them, and in their movie roles, they struggle through doubts and secrets, wondering if they could overcome their past experiences to build a relationship together. Working together closely, the two actors find life imitating art, and they also real an attraction for each other in real life. But like their movie characters, they have past traumas that have influenced their lives, and wonder if they can overcome them so they can also build a relationship together.

I liked the layers in this story. There is, of course, the fictional stories and backstories of Carson and Noel. At the same time, there are the real-life stories and backstories of Braxton and Carrie. Each couple has its own unique challenges to overcome, and each person -- whether fictional or real-life -- has to grow and mature in new ways to make their relationship work.

So even if it's July and your A/C is cranked high, grab a cup of hot cocoa (marshmallows, please) and a fuzzy fleece blanket and snuggle in for a festive, romantic holiday read!

Thank you to Netgalley and Breaking Night Press for the opportunity to read and review this charming book!

A emotional story called A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls bringing two couples together. Carrie and Braxton filming a Christmas movie at Gingerbread Falls brings them together as they play a very similar couple. It’s very strange to read two different yet similar stories in one book. I was riveted and couldn’t put the book down as I really needed to know on how the two couples supported each other through their struggles of dealing with their new relationship while suffering with emotional triggers regarding past trauma. The plot of the movie is very similar to their own emerging relationship as they overcome some hurdles and their secret hidden monsters. A story which tells about outbursts of emotional triggers and reactions from PTSD and how they need some help and support to gain insight to calm and soothe their emotions and feelings from a trigger. This book might trigger a reader who has similar PTSD these characters are suffering from. So if you have been triggered please call someone to talk about it. I have PTSD myself and I have not been triggered by reading their issues of trauma as I kept reminding myself it’s a story and it’s not my personal story.

Magical and Love Affirming
This romance, which is full of the promise of new beginnings, oozes chemistry between the hero and heroine, and I found it to be a deeply romantic and love affirming read.

On the face of it Carrie Murray and Braxton Timothy have little in common. One a lesser-known actress of Hallmark style Christmas movies, who likes to keep herself to herself, and the other a Hollywood star of action movies, who has a reputation for being a player. However, when they start to film a new movie together, the season weaves its magic around them and the couple forge an deep connection.

The story is cleverly orchestrated as we witness them playing out the story of the fictional characters in the movie being filmed and their real life romance off the set. I loved how their relationship grows ever more complex and intense as their attraction to each other ratchets up. Carrie in particular is so fragile and has been through so much and my heart ached for her as she struggles to let go of a past that threatens to derail her future happiness. These two individuals find that they have far more in common than they ever imagined, yet will they put their past traumas behind them and take a chance on love? I was egging them on throughout.

A beautifully and sensitively written read that will delight lovers of contemporary romance.

Please note a copy of this book was given to me by the author and I am leaving an honest review.

I loved how this book was written. When I first started reading it, I thought it was going to be something entirely different but what I got was two stories in one, where the protagonists are in both stories. The first story is of a make-believe town, where Noelle Butler, a coffee shop owner, knows everyone in the small town she lives in. Noelle is wondering if she'll ever find a special someone, when Carson Stark, MD literally catches Noelle in his arms after walking into her coffee shop. Then...cut!

Carrie Murray, who is playing Noelle Butler, is known for her Christmas movies. She hemmed and hawed about accepting this part because of who she would be acting alongside. Carrie is very secretive about her life. There are only a few people who truly know her.

Braxton Timothy is a very well-known Hollywood action actor, he purposefully requested Carrie Murray to play Noelle Butler. Braxton is well aware of the rumors circulating about him but he's hoping to convince Carrie to get to know the real person behind the facade he puts on for the public.

Both carry scars from their past and both have secrets. Braxton knows Carrie is the one for him, but can he convince Carrie that he's her future?

This was a very heart-warming story! I thought it interesting how what Braxton went through was incorporated into the movie script. Both the movie script and consecutive story were Christmas Channel-worthy!

I would like to thank Netgalley, Breaking Night Press and Katie Mettner for the E ARC copy of this book.
This story is told in two timelines. We have the movie timeline and the actor’s timeline. At first, I found this confusing but once used to it I liked it.
Carrie and Braxton are the two stars of the movie. Christmas movies are Carries bread and butter and she loves acting in them. Braxton is an A list Hollywood actor and it is his first time being in a Christmas movie. We get to know them as actors and as the characters they play. Their interaction both on and off screen was really nice. I enjoyed seeing Carrie begin to trust Braxton, and the way Braxton grew up and become more of the man he wanted to be. We also get the story of the movie they are shooting. I loved the characters both movie and actors, the storylines were well written and developed. I really enjoyed the setting of Gingerbread Falls.
This was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. Grab yourself a snuggly blanket and be immersed in Gingerbread Falls.

Welcome to Gingerbread Falls! Here you can stop by the Gingerbread Café for a Gingerbread Crème coffee, specially made by barista and owner Noelle Butler. And meet the handsome new doctor in town, Carson Stark.

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by Katie Mettner is about small screen actress Carrie Murray and Hollywood action hero Braxton Timothy. Carrie and Braxton have traumatic pasts, but their emotional and complex journey is beautifully written. As they work together filming a festive holiday movie, Carrie and Braxton help each other heal, learn to move forward, and end up falling in love.

This is such a unique and heartwarming holiday romance. It’s actually two stories in one, alternating between scenes from the movie that Carrie and Braxton are filming and their developing real-life romance. Both storylines flow really well together, making this an engaging and enjoyable read.

If you’re looking for a holiday romance with some steam, give this one a try!

Thank you to NetGalley and Breaking Night Press for allowing me to read an advanced digital copy of A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls for my honest opinion. This is my honest opinion

I loved the story and the characters were easy to like. There were so many aha moments while reading this. It is a true Christmas story with heartfelt moments.
Carrie Murray, is the Christmas movie girl, and Braxton Timothy, is THE Hollywood movie action star, come together to film a Christmas movie hopefully to make the Christmas Channel. We find good chemistry between the two during filming and after filming....but they are both hiding something.
The book was so easy to get into, which most Christmas story books are, but this one had a mystery to it that made it unique.
What mystery you ask? Well I don't like to spoil books for readers so you will just have to read it when it comes out. You won't be disappointed...I hope there will be another one so that we may see what happens to Carrie and Braxton

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls - Katie Mettner

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Breaking Night Press and I am leaving this review voluntarily

I read this book in one sitting, I found it a very fast and addictive read - from start to finish it took me less than 90 minutes because I was so hooked. The book alternates between film scenes and off-camera life and could very easily be adapted for a TV movie.

I have read a lot of festive books recently, but this book managed to add to my festive spirit. It is a very clever concept with a wonderful twist on the usual Christmas book. A very enjoyable read - it will easily put a smile on your face. I am HIGHLY recommending that everyone puts a few hours aside this festive season to read this delight!
