"A vivid, subversive and feminist reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, where implacable destiny is no match for courage, sisterhood, stubbornness and a good working knowledge of fairy tales." —Katherine Arden
It's Zinnia Gray's twenty-first birthday, which is extra-special because it's the last birthday she'll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no-one has lived past twenty-one.
Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia's last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.

I can't wait to get my hands on this book. The sneak peek was incredible. I read it so quickly and almost threw a full on toddler tantrum when I finished and realised I now need to wait 5 sleeps to read the rest 😫 ❤👸🏻🏰
A clever, contemporary, feminist re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty. Alix Harrow has beautifully blended many versions of the classic into a new modern classic.
A cute story that I liked, but after The Once and Future Witches and Ten Thousand Doors of January, I was expecting more? Her usual twists on common concepts and misunderstandings of fairy tales and lore is still there and good, but it felt like her interesting way of saying things was not as strong. I will be preordering her next novella and everything else she writes, but her full length novels are my favorite and I cannot recommend them enough.
Can’t wait to read the rest of this story. A fascinating new retelling of sleeping beauty. I enjoy fairy tales and most all of the retellings I’ve read.
One thing I really liked about this book was that the it was short -- by that I meant the author told the story -- she didn't add extra complications simply to make it a more common length. I also really liked the basic theme, fairy tales always talk about the handsome prince, but never ask the question, "what if the handsome prince is an asshole." I gave it four rather than five stars was that while I liked the theme, I felt it was pounded too hard and repeated ... on the verge of preachy. It is defintely worth reading.
