A rookie psychic. A chatty, crime-solving canine sidekick. And a killer. Living in Wyldwood can be deadly.
I’m Janelle Brighton, a reluctant psychic trying to find her true calling. So far, my main claim to fame is bringing a spectral dachshund back to life. That unique talent probably won’t take me far in Wyldwood Springs, where magical crime abounds.
After years on the run from hometown enemies, I’ve come back to face the fallout of a teenage prank that put me on the wrong side of powerful people. They still consider me a threat, but if you ask me, my skills are highly overrated.
Mr. Bixby begs to differ. This chatty, cocky dachshund believed in me enough to cross from the dead to the living and join me on a special quest. First, I’ll need to find my estranged and missing mother and cure our family ghost of amnesia. On top of all that, there’s a dead body behind my quaint but haunted jewelry store… and guess who’s getting framed?
When the charming cop I left behind arrives to investigate, Mr. Bixby and a new ghostly canine have my back. While I may underestimate myself, I’ve never underestimated the love of a good dog—dead or alive. So perhaps my new gift is exactly what I’ll need to survive my homecoming.

You Can't Always Get What You Haunt was a delightful surprise. It is a paranormal cozy mystery about Janelle Brighton, a 32 year old with”gifts” (she doesn’t like the term witch). She’s been running from her problems and her powers since she was 17 due to a prom prank the went terribly wrong and angered some very powerful people. She come back to her hometown Wyldwood after some problems with her gifts came to the attention of the sexy police chief in her grandmother’s retirement community at Briar Estates in Florida. She made a hasty exit with only her talking dog, her beloved car and not much else. She hoped her estranged mother could help her learn to harness and use her gifts. However when she arrived at Brighton Manor her mother had disappeared and the family’s ghost butler was not coherent. Now Janny needs to find her mom, figure out who killed the woman found behind the building she just leased, and who is out to kill her and her friends. All of this in a town with too many magical bad guys and almost no one she can trust. This book is well written with lots of suspects, a really bad powerful warlock, a talking dog & a ghost dog, and the ride or die friends anyone would want in their corner!
You Can’t Always Get What You Haunt: Mystic Mutt (1) Ellen Riggs ASIN: B09752RB3N Publisher: (November 16, 2021) Publication date: November 16, 2021
I just finished reading "You Can't Always Get What You Haunt: Mystic Mutt (1)" by author Ellen Riggs.
This is a spin-off from Ellen Riggs’ “Bought the Farm” mystery series and features some characters from that series. Reading some of the “Bought the Farm” series will make this “Mystic Mutt” series make more sense, but you don’t need to read them. The prequel novella to this book, “I Want You To Haunt Me,” introduces Janelle’s situation and Mr. Bixby’s origins. I suggest reading it before you read this one.
Returning to her hometown of Wyldwood after fifteen years, Janelle finds her mother missing, and the townsfolk are unwilling to discuss what they know. Fortunately, she has her dog, Mr. Bixby, and an old school friend to help her!
Fans of the author, Ellen Riggs, will be happy to know that there are several guest appearances from characters in her other books. This is an enjoyable paranormal murder mystery with two main storylines… a mystery that is solved by the end of the book and an ongoing background story that will undoubtedly continue in the rest of the series.
There is a hint of a slow-burn romance, but it only makes a little progress during the first book.
Author Ellen Riggs's book was a totally fun, cozy paranormal murder mystery. I LOVE dachshunds, and this Mystic Mutt series features a formerly deceased ghost dachshund brought through the veil by a woman who keeps denying she's a witch. The dog is, of course, her "familiar," and they can understand each other. This dynamic duo makes for a funny sleuthing team. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
Ellen Riggs has always been obsessed with animals and books. She writes humorous and heartwarming mysteries for pet lovers, including the Bought-the-Farm, Dog Town, and paranormal Mystic Mutt mysteries.
You Can't Always Get What You Haunt Mystic Mutt Mystery series Ellen Riggs
This series is a fascinating departure from her equally entertaining Bought-the-Farm series, retaining the dogs, the fun, and even some of the characters while adding a bit of mystical suspense.
The prequel, I Want You to Haunt Me, gave a hint of what is in store, and this first book is all that and more. I particularly liked the sometimes belligerent, sometimes condescending, but always entertaining Mr. Bixby! Even if the genre isn't normally one of your favorites, I urge you to at least check out the prequel - it certainly made me a fan, and after reading You Can't Always Get What You Haunt, I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next book.
I'm a lucky reader who received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I knew when I read the prequel to this series that I was going to love it! Being a huge fan of dachshunds to begin with, what could be more fun (and true to their character except for the real talking part) than a talking snarky dachshund that deep down loves his human but hates PDA? Pretty sure my dog would be saying some of those same things if she was able to talk, and she definitely likes PDA on her own terms. I got a big kick out of the next ghost rescue dog repeating things and driving poor Bixby nuts with that, lol.
I'm really enjoying these characters and now I want to read the author's other series that this was spun off from. I've been collecting the series and wanting to read it anyway, so no time like soon! I'm eagerly waiting for the next in this series to come out so I can borrow it on KU too!
I discovered both the Bought the Farm and the Dogtown series quite a while back and devoured them like a fine feast. However I normally am a reader of paranormal mysteries, so imagine my delight when I learned Ellen Riggs was going to dabble in that pond. I waited eagerly for the book to drop, and I was definitely not disappointed. This book has it all: humor, excitement, danger...and of course, dogs. However these are dogs with a twist. Mr. Bixby is introduced in the prequel, I Want You to Haunt Me, where he is rescued from being a ghost. Now he is corporeal, but he can still talk to Janelle. The duo return to Janelle's home town, where they are not welcomed with open arms. In fact, most of the town are quite hostile, and Janelle is suspicious of the few who seem to be friendly. The one exception is her old best friend, Renata, and she gets tested for loyalty. When Janelle decides to lease the empty (and haunted) store on Main Street things get busy in a hurry, starting with the murder of the rental agent. As Janelle discovers she has much more magic than she ever thought she had, Mr. Bixby urges her on to greater heights. When they are joined by Sinda who owned the jewelry store Bixby used to haunt, and who will be partner and creative genius of the coming shop for fine jewelry and gifts, Janelle is ready to to create the store she has been dreaming of. However the evil master of crime who runs the town with an iron fist does not want Janelle to have her vision, and in fact he doesn't want Janelle in town at all. Since he has already driven Janelle's mom into hiding (or is it even worse than that?), the trio plus pup are definitely up against it. The ensuing adventures are entertaining and fun, while edging that sense of danger which adds a thrill to any well written mystery. And this book is definitely well written and edited editing, which makes for a great read. I received an ARC version of this book for an honest review, and it certainly is my pleasure to do so.
First, a great book – it has well-developed characters, excitement and suspense, good plot twists, and humor. The two main characters: Janelle - A witch with developing powers (but don't call her a witch); Mr. Bixby – a dachshund returned to life from being a ghost (but don't call him a weiner dog or mention the word "ghost"). After a hair-raising time at her grandmother's community with Jilly and Ivy, Janelle returns home to the town of Wyldwood to get answers and advice from her mother, a powerful witch – who, unfortunately, seems to be missing for several weeks. When Janelle rents an empty and supposedly haunted shop, the agent is found immediately afterward – dead. The local police target her as the only suspect, and the magical police will definitely want their say to have her gone. Fortunately Janelle finds that her once-best friend, Renata (no witch powers), is still friendly. Another ghost dog appears, an energetic poodle; Oscar, who pretty much owns Main Street, has evil powers; and what do the three welcoming shop owners on Main Street really want? Thank heavens Renata and Sinda (and others) are willing to stand up for her and help her find the real culprit! I received an advance reader copy and freely leave this honest review.
NOTE: This is a spin-off from the Bought the Farm mystery series, and features some characters from that series. While you don’t need to have read them to read this, it makes a little more sense if you’ve read at least a couple! Also note that there is a prequel novella to this book which introduces the situation and Mr. Bixby’s origins.
Returning to her home town of Wyldwood, Janelle finds her mother missing, and her own life in danger. Luckily she has her newly revived dog Mr. Bixby to help her, as well as an old school friend!
This is an enjoyable paranormal mystery, with two main storylines… a mystery that is solved by the end of the book, and an ongoing background story that isn’t resolved before the book ends. The characters are quirky and fun, and there are a number of cameos from other series that fans of the author will enjoy. The town of Wyldwood is somewhat steeped in mystery, and it will be interesting to see where the books take us! There is a small hint of romance, but it’s a slow-burn style, with only a little progress in the course of the book. Ultimately it’s a fun and easy to read mystery, and an enjoyable way to pass a few hours.
What a magical journey this book will take you on. This book is centered around Janelle and Mr. Bixby, her talking dachshund, he was a ghost, but now alive. On her way home to Wyldwood Springs, they run into a little trouble, but thankful make it there. All isn’t well at home and her mom is missing. Their family butler, Sir Nigel “Boz” Boswell is a ghost and has been with the family for years. As she’s driving down Main Street, she sees the perfect place to open her new store. The owner, Oscar Knight, doesn’t want her there and tries to renege on the deal she struck up with, Laverne Billings. I’m not going to leave any spoilers, but I will say I loved the new characters, especially Renata and Bijou, and was happy to catch up with some old ones. If you love your mystery with some magic thrown in, you won’t be disappointed with this story.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Janelle & Mr Bixby her now undead dachshund are travelling to her home in Wyldwood Springs. Mr Bixby senses bad people on their trail, so off they have to flee along a trail the super deluxe model cannot follow them on. Janelle makes it safely to her home, but…. No sign of her mother & the resident ghost of Sir Nigel Boswell has no idea where or when she left. Janelle suspects that he has had a memory spell put on him, but, by whom! Janelle finds the perfect shop for her & amazingly manages to get a year’s lease. Then bad things happen. In the shop is a ghost of a beautiful poodle. Janelle also discovers that her friend who she thinks would gate her doesn’t & so she knows she has one faithful friend. Are there any others? Her friend who makes jewellery comes to stay to help her sort it lots of things. I had to read late into the night,as I couldn’t put the book down!
This is the first book in a new paranormal cozy mystery series by my favorite author Ellen Riggs. There is also a prequel titled “I Want You To Haunt Me,” which is where you should start so that you get the full story of how Janelle and Mr. Bixby meet. Ms. Riggs keeps you entertained and captivated in her stories from the first page. Because of this book, my new favorite phrase is now “magical flatulence;” however, you’ll have to read the book to find out why. I laughed out loud so many times my family kept asking what was so funny. If you are a fan of the author’s, you’re in for a treat because some of our favorite characters from the Bought the Farm series are also in this book, including Ivy, Jilly, Edna and Gertie. This book contains talking dogs, ghost dogs, magic, and hilarity. I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.
Janelle is heading back to her hometown, planning to open a jewelry boutique called Whimsy, featuring designs by Sinda, in the old and supposedly haunted Mabel’s Fables. But the owner, Oscar Knight and his rental agent Laverne, are refusing. When Laverne ends up dead after being persuaded to sign a year’s lease against her better judgement, things get a little wild in town. Adding to the craziness, Janelle discovers that her mom has disappeared after a number of antics making her look crazy (or crazier than usual!). The author brings characters from another of her series, which adds a lot to the story. Highly recommended! I received a free copy of this book from the author and write this review voluntarily
Janelle is returning home after another mess up. She will miss her gran, Drew and her new friends but after this, she needs a break. The only good thing that came out was Mr. Bixby was able to cross back to a living dog. When Janelle gets home, her mom is missing. She finds out her mom had been getting into a lot of trouble. Janelle wants to open a new store but is coming up against road blocks. She has also found a cute ghost in the store. Janelle, Sinda, and Ren have been meeting with the welcome committee but Mr. Bixby has pointed out that something isn't right. This was a fun read.
You Can't Always Get What You Haunt is the first book (beyond the prequel) in this original, amusing, series from Ellen Riggs. This series ties to the Bought-The-Farm series because Janelle is Jilly's cousin. In Wyldwood Springs things are seldom what they appear. Life and the magic is disturbed. Janelle uses a bit of trickery to get her shop and an hour later the realtor is dead. Janelle will have to use all her wiles to solve this murder and actually open her shop. I was drawn into this world and could not put the book down. There is a lot of action with many suspects and possible motives.
Janelle finally goes home with her new companion ghost dog, only to find her Mother missing. The butler ghost has been hexed not to divulge any information so Janelle has to start an investigation. This leads to her leasing a store for jewelry & gifts. Unbeknownst to her this store also has a ghost dog waiting for Janelle to reunite her to the living. There is a murder at the new store & because of Janelle's past, she is a suspect. This is a roller coaster ride with so many ups & downs, laughs, love & friendships.
This is a great paranormal cozy mystery. Janelle is a psychic that is Jilly's cousin. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Very good book to read a few chapters a day. The story is about Janelle Brighton who is a reluctant Psychic trying to find her true calling. Janelle ran away from home 15 years ago and before going back to her hometown she brought a spectral dachshund, Mr. Bixby back to life and head back to Wyldwood Springs where there is a lot going on. I love all the characters and Mr. Bixby is my favorite because only Janelle can hear him talk and it makes the story a lot of fun even with the bad things going on Mr. Bixby helps out in ways that no human can.
Absolutely true! I love Janelle, and her amazing talent bringing for rescuing ghost dogs! I love Mr. Biggs smart, and snarky comments. The book is filled with great new characters, as well as visits of some of the old. The setting promises to bring many more great adventures as well as possible new foes. All in all worth reading for any age. Onward to book 2!
I ordered this book for my doxy owning daughter, then for me. Its a confusing read because it stated it was first in a series. No other book before it was listed. It began by telling you about what happened in the beginning. I was into four chapters before another readers comment brought me up pace. I kept going to the store looking for answers. The two stars are for the talking ghost- dog, the other for the story. Its no Jerry McNeal and dog.
Awesome paranormal series with Janelle, her dog Mr. Bixby, Sinda, Renetta. Witches, ghosts, snarky small town characters, what's not to like? Janelle is Jilly's cousin so we still get to visit with the Bought the Farm characters. Cannot wait to read more of this new series. I was given a free ARC by the author. My review is freely and honestly given
Psychic visions , ghost dogs, and real estate deals.
Definitely a different twist to the homecoming story. In the beginning, the dynamics were a bit confusing. I almost felt that I needed to re-read the last Farm story . Gradually, it all came together and Janelle with her trusty sidekick, Mr. Bixbey, out manuvered the bad guy, Oscar.
It was cute book. I wish there were something about the prequel book BEFORE I started reading. Thankful I decided to look about a quarter of the way through because you could tell something important happened before book 1. But there was also something that happened before the prequel that leaves feeling you've missed something.
I think I covered all the bases..this series is so enjoyable. I'm definitely ready to read the third book in the series and see how the next adventure works out. I love the characters, even the bad guys. If you like magical stories, tied into mysteries, you should love these.
I had a hard time getting started with this book, but, i kept reading and started liking it. I need to know more about what happens next. Janelle has her work cut out for her and I like seeing Oscar kind of "give in" to her. But, will it last? I want to see more od Renata and Bijoux.
Another entertaining read. The adventures of Janelle and Mr. Bixby will keep you rolling. Though paranormal books aren’t my go to I’m thrilled to have ventured this path. It truly is an entertaining read and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
What a fun read, with a ghost, good magic, evil magic, murder, sympathetic characters and dogs! I especially enjoyed the special dogs, Mr. Bixby the dachshund, and Bijou the poodle, and their relationships with their humans.
Such a fun read! I love the dog interaction! I have a black & tan dachshund, and I imagine some of the comments coming from him! This author does a great job of character development! I feel like they’d all be fun to know!! Can’t wait for Vol 3!
A witchy new take on the life in the middle south. Witches occupy a town and try to run it their way. When they try it on one witch in particular the find it more difficult.
I read the introduction book and followed up with Book 1 of this series. I was impressed with the link to characters from another series so seamlessly. I look forward to reading more!
