The Maggie & Jasper Capers are fun and flirty cozies, with no swearing or love scenes, and no gruesome violence to keep you up at night.
This book was originally published as Maggie and the Inconvenient Corpse in the Carita Cove Cozy series.
Maggie had divorced her husband - Big Mac McJasper - as soon as she was witness to his cheating and the "little house" she now owned, while renting out the large home she received in the settlement (and all its incumbrances!) was as cute as it was tiny, but she loved it. She was happy to be free of Big Mac, and now owned her craft shop which she was determined would be a success.
But when Maggie discovered the body at the bottom of the pool and the obvious culprit was immediately arrested, Maggie felt something wasn't quite right. Did the police have the right person as the killer? But it was when Maggie found a second body that she knew the police had it all wrong - but could she find the answers before she ended up dead as well? And what was she to do with the adorable Jasper? He was too big for her little house, but she couldn't desert him...
The Inconvenient Corpse is the 2nd in the Carita Cove series by Barbara Cool Lee and the first I've read. It was light, fun and entertaining - Jasper is a sweetheart, and Maggie has a heart of gold. An enjoyable read which I recommend.
Oh my goodness, such a fun cozy mystery!! I really enjoyed it so very much and it kept me turning the pages to see who the killer was. Maggie is the main character and her ex-husband is killed in the swimming pool. She hears Jasper, Mac's beautiful Collie, barking and he won't stop. She lives in the trailer parked in the driveway of her ex-husbands rich California estate. When she gets to the house, she finds Mac, her ex-husband of two months dead in the pool. Mac's new fiance is there and when the police came, they arrested his fiance for murder. Oh no!! Are they sure she is the right person? I wasn't sure!
Such a thrilling and cozy mystery that has well developed and believable characters!! I really hope that you'll read it and enjoy it as much as I did!! It's a fast read with lots and lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end! I couldn't solve the murder but Maggie and Jasper did!! It's part one of a series that can be read as a stand alone 😄.
Enjoy the rest of your Spooky Season!! Happy Reading everyone! 🎇
Ms. Lee has written a cute cozy mystery that is both engaging and heartwarming. Maggie is a wonderful heroine because in spite of the last 10 years in a glamorous Hollywood setting she is still a kind and compassionate person. I'm enjoying the way all of the characters are developing and feel like I'm really getting to know them. The mystery kept me guessing until the end.
Maggie has got to be a library trying to see everyone's side. I read this free on Kindle unlimited and it was a good quick light read of 211 pages after a heavy read of 500+ pages. Finished this in 1 day. Look forward to reading more about Maggie and jasper's adventures.
Maggie McJasper is the ex-wife of a Hollywood mogul, being divorced all of two weeks. She has a large mansion on the beach -- but, unfortunately, no money to maintain it, so rents it to a friend who is a movie star, Reese Stevens. She also has her ex-husband and his new girlfriend living in another mansion next door. The girlfriend who broke up her marriage. Now Maggie is starting over, beginning with opening a bead shop. However, things are not all good in her life: she finds a dead body in a swimming pool, and from there everything seems to go downhill. Except, of course, for the big dog who's trying to move into her tiny home with her...
This is the first book in a new series, and I really would have liked to have given it five stars. Except I am so tired of protagonists who start over with no money and can barely pay their bills. She was married for ten years to a rich man and never fought for a better deal? What. A. Wimp. The book wouldn't have changed much if she'd gotten enough money to live on -- except she wouldn't be broke. I was hoping for better. I also sense that there might be a love triangle, or at least a love interest, and please, please, don't let it be the cop. It's always the cop they choose, and I am not giving up hope yet that this series might go in another direction.
But aside from this, the book was written well and I indeed did enjoy the plot line. I liked that Maggie wasn't a suspect (another thing that usually happens), and that Lt. Ibarra listened to what she had to say. Maggie is intelligent, attractive, and kind. These three things come through quite nicely.
The mystery was also done well, and gave us clues throughout the book, which Maggie turned over to the police as soon as she had them. That's also a plus. The book kept me interested throughout, wanting to know where the next clue would be and how everything would unfold. When it did, and the murderer was revealed, it was definitely a surprise. The ending was both sad and hopeful, and I will read the next in the series. Recommended
I enjoyed this book and will be checking out the rest of the books in the series, I liked it that much. I liked the characters and especially the dog with his sheepie (a toy). The relationships between the characters worked and I liked the teasing but obvious friendship between the main character and her tenant. She is a nice main character that you are going to like because she always seems to find the good in people even when it is hard to find, it does make her a push over but she is strong enough to try to change. The have and have not differences came across nicely in the story and was often amusing. The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing, I never did come up with the killer or the motive. Just a nice easy cozy mystery that is slightly different from the norm. After her divorce where she is left with nothing, other than a house she can't afford Maggie moves into a trailer parked on the drive. She rents out the house to a famous movie star, the man falsely accused of the break up of her marriage and to make things worse her ex husband buys the house next door and moves in with his new girlfriend and want to be fiancee. Can Maggie play nice with the new Mrs McJasper? Especially when she wants Maggie to host a bridel party in her beading shop. When Jasper the dog Big Mac didn't want refuses to stop barking Maggie rushes around to finally give her ex husband a piece of her mind, only to find him floating face down in the swimming pool and his girlfriend on the phone. Maggie dives not only into the pool but also into the murder investigation when the police start to take a closer look at his latest girlfriend. Surely she wouldn't have killed him before she had got her hands on his money? Maggie doesn't think so but who does that leave? And can she take care of a big dog in a small trailer and catch a killer?
After getting hosed in her divorce, Maggie is forced to rent out her beautiful beach home while she lives in a tiny house parked on the driveway. She's recently opened a bead shop in town and hopes to begin turning a profit. At home one evening, Maggie hears incessant barking from next door--her ex-husband's home. Wondering what has upset Big Mac's dog, Jasper, Maggie walks over there and discovers Big Mac at the bottom of the pool. Her efforts to save him are in vain, and when the police realize he was hit over the head, Big Mac's latest arm candy (Maggie's replacement) is arrested for murder. Maggie doesn't believe Virginia would have killed him before marrying him, but trying to figure out who else may have wanted her ex dead is more difficult than she imagined.
A fun story. I liked Maggie as a character, as well as her tenant, handsome movie star Reese Stevens. I really enjoyed the fact that Maggie has a non-contentious relationship with Big Mac's first wife, Nora, and that they refer to each other as Senior (Nora) and Junior (Maggie). Maggie strives to be as benevolent towards Virginia as Nora has been to her, but it's not always easy. The plot moved along at a good pace and kept me turning (virtual) pages.
There were some minor editing errors, including this doozie (SPOILER!): In one chapter we had: Ibarra had said Virginia had been hit over the head the moment she came in the door. A chapter or two later brought this: Ibarra had told her Virginia was strangled. Um...which was it?
In spite of the editing issues, I did enjoy this and will look for more in the series. Four stars

Her ex-husband lives next door in a palatial oceanfront mansion, meanwhile, Maggie resides in a tiny home in the driveway of her old house. Nevertheless, life is good with her new business and old friends. She's happily settled until she finds a dead body whose corpse is very familiar.
Though currently listed as book #1, this is the second book in the series. I love reading series in order, making the progression of the characters visible. In this instance, it was nice to be in an established setting with all the backdrop in place. Maggie is a delight - not whiny or bemoaning her fate. I loved her from the start. The rest of the characters were a typical cast and some were more enjoyable than others.
On the other hand, the mystery didn't feel completely fair as its resolution was based on information revealed at the last minute. There was, however, a tiny telegraphic instance before the denouement which went a little way to redeeming the situation. Once the pieces were put together, I appreciated the puzzle's artfulness.
This cosy is the epitome of the genre with an amateur sleuth and clean language; I recommend it to those fond of the softer side of the mystery blanket.
Living in a tiny home parked in the driveway of a big beautiful beach side house is our female lead, Maggie. Maggie rents out her house to former rock star turned actor Reese. Next door to the previously mentioned home is her ex-husband Big Mac, whom she divorced six short months ago, and his fiance Virginia. And we can't forget her furry companion.
Life is going good up until she stumbles upon not one, but two dead bodies. And now the search is on as she takes it upon herself to help the police find the killer.
This book is a nice comfy read. I wouldn't call it a page turner that will keep you all hours of the night, but it's one that you'll enjoy and will see through to the end.
While it's not quite laugh out loud funny, it has a lot of witty humor. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it has a very slow start.
This was a unique and very different type of main character from what I'm used to. Maggie was a fun character that had a friendly relationship with a handsome star she rented most of her house to. It was pretty funny how she and her ex's other ex called each other Senior and Junior as well as being on good terms with each other. When said ex turned up dead, Maggie felt she needed to help out fellow almost-wife of her ex. Yep, it's a bit convoluted in places, lol.
I was completely surprised by the twist at the end and I hadn't guessed whodunit. Jasper the collie had completely won my heart when he came on the scene. It was cute how Maggie found out why he was bumbling and bumping around her tiny house too.
The plot was well developed and had me guessing. Younger people or fashion minded will identify with Maggie's thought process o shopping ( I think more along the lines of Jane Marple). The emotions Maggie express are eight on, so believable, that it's easy for the reader to cruise along on the mystery ride. Lee does a perfect job on pacing and suspense as she drops clues among the suspects and makes the reader wonder, "What will happen to Jasper!" All the right characters are so likeable. Cosy is not my preferred genre but I can recommend this for teens and adults ( although an unfaithful husband has a bad pattern). Loved Lee's writing style so read and enjoy!
Maggie hears her ex-husbands dog barking continuously, and goes next door to investigate. She finds his fiancee on the phone looking away from the pool while her ex is lying on the bottom of the pool clearly no longer alive.
Pro's: Developed characters and a good storyline for a first in a series.
Con's: 1) There were a couple of places where the descriptions were a little excessive. 2) You DON'T hurt an animal in a cozy book like that! If the dog had died I wouldn't even consider reading anymore of these stories.
I had to really struggle to not give a one star rating due to the injured animal.
Barbara Cool Lee brings the cozey to her mysterys even when there's been a death by the ex. There are the most glamorous movie stars and Hollywood crowd living the good life in Margie's small town get away .Retired socialites and those who look after them. OH and the odd killer here and there that keeps life and the residents alerted, intrigued and trying to find out who really did the dirty deed. 🤔 😏Acquire " The Inconvenient Corpse " today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. 🙂 Kat
Maggie signed the divorce papers without reading the fine print. Now she’s on her own living in a tiny house and renting out her mansion to her movie star fried Reese. When her ex is found dead in his pool and hit current girlfriend holding the skimmer and calmly talking on the phone she thinks something isn’t right and she’s going to prove it. Are sparks going to fly between her and Reese? Can she make a go of her new bead business. What should she do with Jasper, her ex’s dog? Many twists but she’ll figure it out.
I am usually a reader of serious drama, violence, I'm a huge fan of James Patterson, Dean Koontz, John Grisham etc. I wanted something lighter but with some fun to it. You will never see a comedy or romance novel in any of my books. However, something in Barbara's writing style drew me to her books. I'm thrilled that I found her and her novels, and I plan on reading each and everyone of them. Give her a few pages and you won't be able to stop!!! Enjoy the Journey. It's a lot of fun.
Fast cosy mystery After ten years of married life as a trophy wife, Maggie is now on her own and she is trying to make ends meet with her newly opened bead shop. However, things were already down and she ended up finding a dead body in a swimming pool. There is, of course, a big dog that is trying to move into her apartment after she witnessed the murder. In the beginning, Maggie looked like she did not fight more for a better life, but then as the murder mystery started, Maggie’s talents combined with Lt. Ibarra’s presence gave a neat, enjoyable mystery read. Neat fast cosy read.
Such a fun, quick and very visual book. It does have quite the mystery happening and keeps it light with some good quirky one liners. I thought it did a really good job at introducing the main character Maggie and brought in her close friends who I can’t wait to learn more about them in books to come. It was definitely hard to pick the murderer and just enough twists to keep it interesting.
I loved how the book brought you into the life of the characters so quickly and held you there through the whole book. There are so many people I'm recommending this wonderful book to. Lets start with my mom my daughters my girlfriend and on and on and on. I gave this book a 5 star rating because there's no over sexualized story here and not being the main focus of the story. The dog lives and it ends so nice.
The Inconvenient Corpse (A Maggie & Jasper Caper, #1, by Barbara Cool Lee, is a cozy mystery. It should have been short and sweet and a nice short mystery to boot. It was short and a meh mystery.
I couldn't force myself to root for any of the characters. They were all just so bland and boring. Well, except Reese Stevens - he was super rich and semi- boring.
I had high hopes for this book. It sounded good. But it wasn't. To me at least.
I enjoyed this story quite a lot. While introducing us to several characters we get to know a good deal of the background for them. The solving of the murder is well done and keeps you guessing till the conclusion. It is a quick and easy read and I am looking forward to the next book.
This was a fun mystery! Poor Maggie, she’s discovered a dead body. She has mixed feelings about this. She has taken in their dog and now has her hands full. And there’s a handsome movie star who keeps trying to get her attention. The characters were fun! Maggie and her interactions with the other characters are enjoyable.
This book was not a book I thought I would enjoy reading. It was suspenseful and the main character s were likable. It really kept you wanting to read more. I loved I could put the book down and come back later when I had time to read. Love this series and will be reading more. Thanks!
I am not a fan of mystery stories, but this one was an ok story. The good - there were no sex scenes, the violence was after the incidents occurred, there was some humor and the story flowed along quite well. For me, this was pretty much entertainment without much of a takeaway nature. The character relationships, especially at the end, became a bit confusing.
This is a quick and entertaining mystery with attractive and interesting characters and a very nice dog. The mystery was interesting as is the setting, but the people are what makes the book. There are undercurrents that I'm sure will be developed as the series progresses.
This was a really good cozy mystery. The characters are well written and very likeable. The setting sounds amazing. The mystery had some twists. I will be reading mire.
A fun, light mystery with lots of great characters. No bad language. Enough story and mystery that I wasn't sighing in the first chapter saying yes, we all know that's who did it. Creative twists!
Moved along rapidly. Interesting characters. An American cozy mystery. Good way to pass time. The main character is a nice person . I use books to relax, and this book did the trick.
How much cuter can a book get? A beautiful dog, A cute divorced woman and a handsome and sexy man round out the main characters of this cute and cozy mystery series. What more could you want? Many thanks to the author for writing this wonderful series.
