A steamy romantic comedy to be remembered! Join Tilly as she begins her journey of empowerment and unexpected love story. The Texts Before We Met is a fun romance with a little steam and lots of laughs.
The Texts Before We Met, a short story and romantic comedy, follows Tilly who dreams of becoming an oscar winning actress. She also dreams of something far less family-friendly. She has always longed to be dominated. She wants an alpha guy of her own. During an acting course in Brighton, she decides to embrace her desires and makes a risky decision. After trying out online dating, she agrees to meet the stranger she has been talking to online for a mere few weeks. Will he be the dominating guy she's been dreaming of?
As the acting course progresses, so does the romance. As Tilly begins to make friends, her texts with her online mystery man accelerate too. She worries whether she has made the right decision. Should she listen to her heart’s desire or pay attention to the warning signs? Is he the perfect alpha man or is she in over her head with online dating?
On the day she's due to meet her online guy, she races to the five star London hotel. She's running late, but she's ready to finally find out who he is. Will he live up to her expectations and be the sexy alpha guy she's always wanted?
This short story and online dating adventure is a romance to remember and the prequel to the debut novel and steamy romantic comedy, The Girl Who Jumped.
Tilly wants to be an actor so she's taking a course to make her dreams come true. But she's also talking to a guy online that seems to have the Dom qualities she's looking for. Their texts back and forth make her feel more and more comfortable as well as excited to finally meet him. It was obvious during watching her through her acting course that Tilly was a very nervous person and had some anxiety. It made her so much more likable to me since I have the same type of personality.
Tilly did the sensible thing and told her friend Amelia that she was meeting a stranger from the internet and where she would be. They had a code that Tilly could text her in case she ran into trouble so that Amelia could send help to her. Not that Tilly really thought that her dominating, dream date was dangerous or anything but you can't be too careful.
This book is the prequel to, The Girl Who Jumped. It was only 58 pages long but we get to read the texts between Tilly and her online stranger before they meet at the hotel. It was a fun read and made me look forward to reading the book where they meet in person.
Matilda Swinney’s the Texts Before We Met is a teaser to her book The Girl Who Jumped. I picked up this short read because it’s an epistolary novel - written entirely in the form of text messages. These are the actual text messages between the author and someone she’s off to meet.
Now, even though I’ve given the book 4 stars, it’s a difficult one to rate and definitely not for everyone. Firstly, the story is too short for my liking. I don’t mind the cliffhanger ending, but I would have enjoyed some more background details…especially how the conversation started. Chapter One begins almost mid-conversation, so the reader has to deduce everything (the relationship between the two characters) quickly.
Surprisingly, that is also the reason I liked the book. Because there is no real beginning, the reader sort of becomes a voyeur, listening in (reading in this case) to a private and intimate conversation - like overhearing two people without them knowing while riding a train. This aspect fascinated me the most. In a weird way, it made me a part of the book, or so I felt.
I’m terms of structure, the author mentions the date and time for each message. I didn’t like this format. It fills up the entire page and doesn’t look appealing. Maybe a mention of the date on top followed by the time before each message (because that’s important) would suffice.
On the plus side, slowly discovering the relationship status between the two protagonists and what they are up to is exciting. While it doesn’t take long to figure out what it is (no hints from me), I like how specific details about what’s happening and will happen come out slowly over the messages.
The Texts Before We Met is a quick read. You need to read past the first or maybe even the second chapter to get into the thick of things. I did, however, find it intriguing enough to want to find out what happens next…

So this appetiser/prequel is a collection of text messages between Tilly and a man for the book The Girl Who Jumped.
It starts in the middle of a conversation which is okay, but later on I was wondering how they found each other.
from the way they are messaging each other you can sort of guess what type of relationship this will be.
I'd love to have gotten more information on Tilly but as this a prequel written in texts I understand that is not possible.
In the description it says "Real-life text messages from an unforgettable love story."
At this moment I don't really see any hints of this becoming an unforgettable love story, but that means you'll just have to read the book to find out!
It is an easy read and it will set the tone for the book which comes out next year.
I recommend reading it on a bigger screen than an e-reader. I think you will find it easier to follow.

The Texts Before We Met is a teaser for the upcoming full-length novel, The Girl Who Jumped. Written entirely in text message form, I was instantly hooked as it was although I was eavesdropping on a conversation that I perhaps shouldn’t be privy to. Tilly and S are clearly excited to meet each other but seemingly for totally different reasons. I enjoyed the cliffhanger ending which left me wanting more, and to find out what happens when Tilly and S finally meet.
The format itself was a little jarring, with the dates and times on every single line taking up far too much space on the page. Occasional headings and subheadings would have sufficed.

The "texts before we met" is a collection of text messages between Tilly, a young woman living in London and a man, during the few days before they met in real life. You need to read "The girl who jumped" to know what happens to this couple, because this is just an appetiser about their affair.

I tend to like epistolary type books, maybe it's my nosy nature, so this book piqued my interest in able to read a back and forth exchange between two people. The story itself was not what I was expecting, but I am invested enough to want to read the next book that will based on this. Brilliant! I love the writing style. Not having background information on the characters really made me want to know more about them which was great for a short story. Can’t wait for the next instalment!
After this prequel, I definitely want to read "The girl who jumped". an interesting, short story, which is mostly a message between Tilly and S. It didn't leave a special impression on me, it doesn't have an exact beginning, but the end attracts you to read on.
This is a novella and prequel to an upcoming novel set to publish in the spring. "The Texts Before We Met" follows an actress texting and planning to meet up with a stranger she met on the internet. They send flirtatious texts back and forth, with him being dominate and demanding.
I liked how quick of a read it is. Someone could easily finish this in one day. The writing itself is also good--style and voice.
Reading this prequel though, I fear for Tilly. She meets a stranger on the internet and plans on having sex with him on their first date. There was no indication that Tilly has seen pictures of him, and she seems to have this fantasy that he's a "sexy millionaire" that she's not 100 percent sure is even fact. I just would have appreciated a bit more if Tilly had done *some* investigation to ensure her safety. She and her best friend did set up a system where if Tilly doesn't text her friend by a certain time, her friend would call the police, but still...
3/5 stars. It's a good set-up and I wish the author the best on her upcoming debut novel!

First of all, a big thank you to the writer for sending me an ARC of this book.
The texts before we met is a prequel to the author’s debut novel: ‘The girl who jumped’. The story starts off with Tilly (the main character) texting with this mystery guy that she is going on a ‘date’ with.
At first, I found the story a bit confusing but later on it became more clear what they were talking about and referring to. Sometimes, Tilly wonders off in her story so that also makes it a bit harder to follow.
The main character (Tilly) sounds like a very sweet girl but does come off as a bit dumb and indecisive from time to time. She is constantly questioning whether or not she should meet the guy and what the exact rules of ‘the game’ are. It doesn’t make me dislike the character but it also makes it harder for me to absolutely root for her.
In conclusion, I gave this book a three star review because I thought the story was a bit confusing and the main character came off as a bit dumb and indecisive from time to time. I did very much like the concept and writing style though!
Tilly is an aspiring actor & is attending an intensive drama course in the hopes of one day hitting the big screen, but behind this seemingly sweet wannabe star, Tilly has a naughty side, a side that is risky, erotic and potentially rewarding, in more ways than one.
This novelette is a great introduction to the The Girl Who Jumped, which is when Tilly finally meets her very own Christian Grey.
It does have some funny & cute moments, but also some bizarre ones (mainly the text messages her mystery man sends her - i.e the game messages) but I definitely want to read more and find out what happens.
Not for everyone as this book is the start to a D/s relationship.
Thank you BookSirens for the Arc ebook gift. I’m leaving this honest review voluntarily.
This is Tillys short story. She’s a daydreamer, an aspiring actress, attending drama school. She’s also naughty, dreaming of her own Christian Grey. She finds herself a mystery dom, they communicate only through texts. His messages are intriguing, powerful, he compliments her and encourages her constantly. The story is a prequel to another book The Girl Who Jumped, which is when they finally meet in person. To me this was a bit of a confusing story and it didn’t win me over to the very end. The main female character is too weak and completely clueless, the story has some funny moments, but also some really bizarre ones. The Texts Before We Met is by Matilda Swinney
This is a prequel for the upcoming book coming out April 2022 The Girl Who Jumped.
This novella/prequel start with Tilly. She met a stranger online and spends at least a week talking to him. She sends texts/pics to him.
The only thing wrong is meeting a stranger online. I’m not sure how old she is but she seemed very naïve when it came to her safety with a stranger she met online. But other than that I loved the writing and it was easy reading . It was a great prequel I’m looking forward to reading the book !
The story is a prologue story of "The Girl Who Jumpedi" series. So it's basically describes what happened before a girl named Tilly met her online date for the first time after a long time of texting.
This may sound so easy, but trust me, it's not. There is a mystery about the boy or man (no one knows) because they only texted for a while, no face time, no calls. Not only that, he also have a thousands of rules and Tilly have to follow those if she wants to meet him. This concept gave the story another level of suspense vibe. I love the ending also.
So this prologue story is worth of reading if you enjoy suspense romance.
This chick is going to get murdered by a fake Dom. But also, I probably would have met him too. Now I need to know what happens so I'm going to read the next book because curiosity got the best of me.
A young lady who wants to act and break bad relationship habits seeks out a Dominant male. She finds one, but is unsure she can follow through and actually show up. He sounds like he is hiding something. Murder? Wife? Billionaire? Idk... But I will after I read the next book.
I gave it two stars because it reminds me of my dumbass in college. Cheers, Tilly! Hope you don't get murdered, but I see two more books so you're prolly alive, just mentally fucked.
This short story and online dating adventure is a romance to remember and the prequel to the to the debut novel and steamy romantic comedy The Girl Who Jumped

Really enjoyable short story

This prequel seemed very confusing and left you with more questions than answers. Usually, I would say that is a good thing as it sucks the reader in and make you want to continue the series, but that was not the case for me on this book. I feel as though something is missing that is creating a disconnect between Tilly in her character background and what we get to read in this prequel. I really wanted to like this, but if I am tempted to DNF the prequel it doesn’t bode well for the series.
I couldn’t put it down and I’m so excited for The Girl Who Jumped! It ended on a cliffhanger, but it was so worth it. It has romcom vibes, but also so much realism. I felt everything Tilly was feeling throughout the story.
The Texts Before We Met was a perfect lead-in to Matilda Swinney's The Girl Who Jumped.
In this story, we follow Tilly as she engages in an acting course in Brighton. At the same time, she continues to interact with a man she connected with online. Their communications evolve and intensify, leading up to a scheduled meeting at a posh hotel in London.
This was a fun, short read that provided some great background on Tilly--her aspirations, past, and how she came to meet this mystery man. I highly recommend giving The Texts Before We Met a read, and then immediately moving on to The Girl Who Jumped!
Special thanks to BookSirens for a free ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This is a short novella full of text messages between two people, I wished to get more into the backstory, the way it was written is original but needed more into it, it felt too repetitive for such a short novella. Tilly's story needs a bit more plot and development.

This story is told from Tily's prospective and it's a bit confusing at first. Tily tends to daydream. Sometimes she will envision or wish for a different scenario then snap back to reality. This took me some time to get used to. I believe this is done because Tily WANTS to be Anastasia Steele. For those familiar with 50 Shades, they will know that she had an inner goddess. I think Tily's daydreaming and how she processes things is in contrast to that.
Tily is so incredibly clueless as to what type of arrangement she has gotten herself into. She's so focused on the sex that it appears she hasn't taken the time to research this new world and the vocabulary used. Her naivety is worrisome and a turn off for me as I have always been pulled toward stronger female leads.
With that said, her mystery dom, is intriguing. He compliments her and encourages her to speak up. He's words are super powerful, and this is just text. I can only imagine what he will be like in person. I just know that it will be life changing for Tily and we will see her grow from this scared little bunny.
I like the premise, I would have appreciated a bit more back story, but it was a good read and I look forward to the actual novel.
This is a short series of text messages written as a prequel to “The Girl Who Jumped.” I haven’t read the sequel yet, so there was a cliffhanger ending to “The Texts Before We Met.”
These text messages are between a young woman and a man who have never met in real life, but plan to meet in person soon. This was a slightly disturbing series of texts messages for me personally. They have some 50 Shades of Grey type of vibes, which isn’t really my cup of tea.
I went into reading this with zero expectations and just thought the way it was written as text messages between the two people was interesting. The whole book is only 8 chapters and you can fly through it easily.
I wish there was more background story to how the two characters met and how their text messages began. My guess is maybe that will come with the sequel. I probably will read the sequel just to see what happens to the characters. Disclaimer that I received this book for free as an advanced reader copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
