"I have seen what comes next. No one will survive the world to come…"
All six books from the action-packed first season of the DSA are now in one complete exciting volume and I could not put it down! It’s action packed and and full of adventure and intrigue, rogue experiments and dangerous conspiracies. The storyline is complex and exciting and the twists and turns will keep you guessing as we join the Department of Special Assignments as they investigate the unusual. It’s one hell of a read and I cannot wait to read season two.
This boxset contains all six books in the first series of the DSA (the Department of Special Assignments). Having previously read some of the books, this allowed me to catch up with all the pieces I had missed in-between. The series starts with policeman Ben Riley chasing a suspect into an abandoned building, only to see something he can’t believe. By the time his partner arrives, whatever it was has disappeared, leaving Ben wondering if he had just imagined it. The events of that night leaves him with a fixation that leads to him being found guilty of murder, when a body is found in the building he won’t keep away from! In prison he is approached by the director of a secret team called the DSA, who are there to investigate strange occurrences that happen anywhere in the US. His first case is that of a town called Bellbrook, where all the inhabitants have disappeared and the town has become covered by a huge forest. Teamwork seems to be broken after the team he has joined lost its lead member Grissom, and a new deputy director Sullivan, is working against the director Metcalf. A strange organisation called the Trust seems to be working more for its own power and control over everything the DSA is trying to protect. Ben finds himself working on leads for this case with Morgan Dunleavy, but it just leads to a burnt out body, in the middle of an office room which was completely untouched. A handprint is burnt into the body, right to the bone! It seems a pyrokinetic is targeting labs, but a tons of lies and illicit drug trials cause confusion and mistrust between the team members. An FBI contact, Connor Hendricks, helps them to link the events, but whether this Promethean, one who can control fire, is actually the killer or another victim, is unclear. Lincoln MacKenzie has been tasked with finding the person known as the Witness, the person behind what happened in Bellbrook, but he is soon going to find out that nothing will be quite what he expected. An extremely dangerous threat is coming and may be aimed at the director of DSA, but it is also targeting the DSA Agency in itself! Another death in the team, and then a deadly virus which turns normal people into killers, soon leaves Ben in danger and Morgan having to find a cure. It ends with Ben and his whole team being branded as traitors and being in danger from the man who has turned many against the former leader of the DSA and with his own plans for the organisations future. Kill squads are out there hunting for those they consider traitors and some have been tricked into sticking on the side they are. The location of the Wellspring is being sought and it seems the files may have finally been cracked, revealing its location to those who follow Sullivan and his dubious links with the Trust. How far he can be trusted and whose orders he is following, seem more likely to be his own, rather than an organisation that can be trusted with your life, or those of the world itself. Lots of death is on people’s hands and more is likely to come now. Whether the true idea of DSA will survive the turmoil now happening, is unclear, and field agents will wonder if they can even trust those they thought of as friends or allies. A cracking ending to the first season, with death stalking many and betrayal others. An interesting read with futuristic and supernatural possibilities still to be revealed in full, as well as agents facing death and danger at every turn. I look forward to reading season two and seeing what happens next. I received an ARC copy of this boxset from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the books above.
The Department of Special Assignments is a conundrum wrapped in an enigma.
The Clearing: Allow an afternoon for this first intricate PG paranormal procedural episode of the Department of Special Assignments, previously the Department for Scientific Anomalies, the existence of which many suspect but of which no evidence is allowed to remain.
Promethean: Allow a day for this PG paranormal procedural with ties to The Clearing as Ben, Morgan, and Zac head to Chicago, and Lincoln heads to Lexington.
The Bridge: Allow an afternoon for this PG political hatchet job procedural with a LOT of backstory fill for the first two books.
Spectral Advocate: "The young boy woke with a start and raced for the door." So begins this PG13 paranormal mystery about the Department of Special Assignments, which takes a day to read.
Dark Impulses: Allow the better part of a day for this PG15 thriller about the mysterious DSA which has Agents Morgan Dunleavy and Ben Riley in Buffalo during January.
I'm finished with DSA: Broken Loyalties: This five-hour PG15 thriller starts in the Miami-Dade sewers, ends in Bethesda, and kept me up well past my bedtime.

This is the complete six book first arc of this action/adventure, political intrigue series. There are also strong elements of the paranormal in here as well, so this is not your standard fare.
The stories are very well written with lots of action and complicated plots with lots of intrigue, twists and turns. That started with the first book and never let up as the plot gets more complex with each book. The stories are packed with complex characters and a detailed setting that really bring the stories to life. And while we wrap up some major threads by the end of book six, there are lots of loose ends as well. That just makes me all the more anxious for Season Two.
Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this refreshing story. Ben is recruited to join the DSA (Dept of Special Assignments) and finds way more exists than he was ever aware of. What we usually see is actually only a small part of what is out there.
