(1922) A Sinti Holocaust survivor born in Biberach an der Riss. She writes Romani tales and organizes literary events at schools where she lives in Rosrath near Cologne. She was the first Sinti woman to be awarded Germany’s highest prize, the Federal Cross for Merits for her “activities endeavoring after understanding and conciliation.”

Dies war ein gutes Buch, sehr interessant, aber die Autorin scheint zwischen idealisierten Erinnerungen und den harten Realitäten der Zeit gefangen zu sein, während sie über die Mai-Prozessionen und die Kirche spricht.
Etwas sagt mir, dass die Autorin ihre Kindheit stark idealisiert. Das klingt oft viel zu idyllisch, um wahr zu sein. Außerdem spricht sie manchmal ganz allgemein von "Zigeunern" und verstärkt einige romantische Zigeunerstereotypen, während sie gleichzeitig einige negative diskreditiert, wenn auch nicht die, das sie der Mehrheitsgesellschaft völlig entgegengesetzt sind.
Dieser Traum mit der Jungfrau Maria, der heruntergeworfene Elektrozaun und die riesigen Äpfel waren eine schöne Szene. Wären meine Kunstfertigkeiten besser, würde ich es malen. Wenn ich darüber nachdenke. Was sie schrieb, scheint manchmal zu "poetisch" um wirklich gesprochen zu sein.
Das Buch ist ziemlich episodisch und liest sich hauptsächlich wie ein Manuskript. Tatsächlich hatte ich anfangs gar nicht bemerkt, dass es einen Verleger gab, dessen Kapitel ziemlich dumm war. Das letzte Kapitel über Zigeunerstereotype und Verfolgung war für mich völlig überflüssig.

This was a good book, very interesting but the author seems to be trapped between idealized memories and the harsh realities of the time while talking about the May processions and church.
Something tells me that the author is idealizing her childhood heavily. This often sounds way too idyllic to be true. In addition, she sometimes speaks quite generally about "gypsies" and reinforces some romantic gypsy stereotypes, while at the same time discrediting some negative ones, albeit not the one of them being completely opposite to the mainstream.
That dream with Mother Mary, the thrown down electric fence and the giant apples was a nice scene. Would my art skills be better I would paint it. Come to think of it. What she wrote sometimes seems too "poetic" to have been actually spoken.
The book is quite episodic and really reads mostly like a manuscript. In fact at first I did not even realize this had a publisher, whose chapter was kind of stupid. That last chapter on gypsy stereotypes and persecution was totally superfluous for me.

Philomena Franz zemřela před pár dny. Útlá publikace je niterným osobním svědectvím a vzpomínkou na život v rodině Sintů před a během války, včetně jejího věznění v několika KT. KHER doplnil vzpomínky o jedinečný rozhovor s autorkou. Za zmínku rozhodně stojí i doslova od Renaty Berkyové, dává knize cenné širší souvislosti.
