Soon after being promoted and assigned to the prestigious San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Homicide Detail, Detective Eli Hockney and his team investigate one of the most fascinating and exciting cases of their careers. An affluent couple from Los Angeles was kidnapped and killed, only to be discovered buried in a deep grave seventy miles away in the east end of the San Bernardino Valley. Follow Eli as he gets swept away by the greed of the Hollywood elite, and their international rich and famous friends who are all suspects in the murders.
Derek Pacifico’s novels are based on his experiences as a 24-year law enforcement veteran and former homicide detective, who together with his teammates, worked and solved nearly 200 murder cases. Retired from active police service, Derek now teaches criminal justice courses, consults with novel and screenplay writers, while authoring novels fictionalized from the archives of his own cases.
Wow, just wow. I feel like I am shell shocked after finishing this book and I just want more. Derek Pacifico has made a die hard fan out of me. Derek Pacifico, the author, is a retired San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department homicide detective. In his 22 year tenure he worked his way up the ranks serving as a jail deputy, patrol officer, and detective. Now in retirement he has created fictional stories around what he saw through his career.
The story: Eli Hockney is a young deputy recently promoted to the coveted San Bernardino Sherriff's Department in homicide. Meeting his new team and fulfilling a legacy his late father did not get the opportunity to, he is gunned and ready to go. Right as he gets comfortable a high profile case is rolled over to his team; the double homicide of two of Los Angeles' wealthy, well liked residents. Being young and eager Eli jumps right in to put all of his previous experience to play. With navigating the muddy water of Los Angeles' elite and trying to draw a line between personal and professional, Eli is up for a wild ride.
This book is truly a great piece of work. Eli's character is so relatable to everyone who jumps into a new career that they are passionate about. You chuckled at his novice mistakes, his youthful energy, and his emotions that he feels. As a female, I can tell you this is the most connected I have ever been with a male protagonist. I have read a handful of detective/mystery series over the years but none have left me quite on my seat like this. I can genuinely say, I hope we get another Eli Hockney book in the future!
The story follows Eli Hockney who is following the footsteps of his father. Eli has gifts to be an excellent detective, but the mistakes could jeopardize his career, if not tip off the adversaries who killed an elderly couple. Eli experiences the glitter and glamour of Los Angeles--especially Hollywood, does the bright lights blind him from those he is after. This is a quick read, coming from one who will slog slowly through a book, because the short chapters have me hooked to determine what is next..., or will the badge be the first item lost because Eli's foolish decisions?
