Hello everyone, and welcome to my book review. This has next to no reviews so I'm going to tell you why you should not only purchase your own copy, but also encourage others to do so.
Straight away when I opened this book I wasn't sure what to expect. I was thinking this would be a book going into theory and coping mechanisms, and it turns out that this book in a way- is but also isn't.
It opens exploring gender as a cake. And how cake is different for everyone. As someone who is dominantly asexual, I appreciate the enthusiasm for different cakes for different preferences. This book goes into detail about what it means to be transgender, but also what it means to be cisgender. So for anyone who isn't sure how to handle someone who has come out as transgender- this book is also for you. I borrowed from my library, and will be buying one to actually fill in for myself, and for my friends and family members as we navigate the more difficult conversations in my life.
I appreciate that this book is very light hearted. Being transgender in a world where the headlines hate transgender people, and a world where many people believe it is a choice- it is extremely difficult. It is great to have a simple book that can be understood by anyone.
I like how there is a section for many terms; Agender, Bigender, Binders, Blockers, Deadname, Demiboy, Demigirl, Dysphoria, Gender, Gender Expression, Gender identity, Genderfluid, Genderqueer, Mastectomy, Non Binary, Oestrogenn, Packer, Pangender, Phalloplasty, Puberty, Testosterone, Trans man, Trans woman, Trans (gender), Tucking, Vaginoplasty.
These all can impact people who are on the trans spectrum in many different ways, but this book is a very simple intro to it. It also doubles as a colouring book, with numerous activities for both transgender and cigender people to write about their lived experience. I love how it covers all genders. It also covers how people see themselves, and helps people talk and explore that.
The design is simple, and you can make it your own. I love that my local library got this in because I know that there are so many people that will benefit from this book. So I just want to say too, if you aren't sure, recommend this book to your library. See if it is possible at all to get this book in and maybe take photos of some of the pages on your phone, and write your answers on a sheet of paper or in your diary. Make this book your own.
This book is for anyone regardless of age, identity etc. I cannot rate this book enough.
