Immortal Return wraps up the Primordials of the Shadowthorn nicely. It immediately begins where book 2 left off. Halira finding out some unintentional consequences seeking out the last Primordial. Now having to fight for Ryvan. The curse of the blight continues, but now with more clues that leads her to the mages - the last faction in the war yet to be introduced.
I found the story slower paced. Taking its time to reveal and wrap up the total story. I enjoyed the new challenge between Halira and Ryvan. Him unable to communicate with the curse futher tainting his soul. The writing compensates by giving some of the story from his perspective. While they are warring with their emotions, some moments felt convenient. More of a character development with the plot sort of happening until the characters caught up. I wasn’t sure either about the mages' motivation. They were certainly a bady, but I felt like this took a while to develop answers and seemed personally against Halira and her cousin without true reason. I felt this should have been explored to be more than surface level. However, the dynamics between the races - the druids, and the humans - were an interesting dilemma with a diverse world that highlighted the strife caused by the Primordials and how each group managed.
Overall, I enjoyed. Loved how the characters questioned if what they were doing was ultimately the right choice. Felt like Halira and Ryven fight for themselves to be who they ultimately want to be.
Great ending to a unique story. I'm glad it ended the way it did with the exception of a few things. I loved the dark and twisted world. I loved how the story's history grew and it changed people's beliefs.
