Fourth and Wrong

Rate this book
Nate Riegert had a lot going for him: good looks, a promising arm, unreal stats on the football field, and a potential shot at playing quarterback in the NFL. And then someone crushed his skull with an iron plate in the weight room at UW-Rockland. Nate's on-again-off-again girlfriend is accused of the grisly crime. Sarah Novak has no viable alibi, and the case seems open-and-shut.

Sarah's father seeks out an acquaintance from his past to help prove his daughter's innocence, but his difficult personal history with Duff might be too much for the surly detective to simply and forget. Not to mention, this murder is located painfully close to the one case that continues to haunt Duff.

Abe and Duff head north to Wisconsin to see if they can determine who really killed Nate Riegert and end up getting tangled in a strange web of gambling, college athletics, teenage hormones, and too many suspects. For two guys who could not throw a decent forward pass between them, the clock is ticking, they're out of timeouts, and they need a Hail Mary to solve this case.

Another great Abe and Duffy story. I liked this one even better than the first one. I laughed quite a bit reading this one. And I enjoyed learning more about duff as well. Looking forward to reading the third.

In Waukesha, Wisconsin, a quarterback at a local college is murdered in the weight room. The cell phone of an ex-girlfriend, Sarah Novak, is found at the scene, and Sarah is arrested. Sarah's parents turn to Chicago PIs Abe Allard and C.S. Duffy to exonerate their daughter and find the murderer.

Waukesha is Duffy's hometown, and he enlists the help of some old friends in investigating the crime. He also continues working on a cold case from the time of his childhood that has haunted him ever since. Parallels between Duff and another fictional detective, Adrian Monk, are apparent here.

Come for the plot, stay for the witty dialogue and great imagery? Come for the witty dialogue and stay for the great imagery and the plot? Come for the great imagery and stay for the plot and the witty dialogue?

However you analyze this book, you won't go wrong! I laughed, I smiled, and as a fellow Wisconsinite, I grimaced as the descriptions were true to a tee. This light-hearted mystery will entertain you from cover to cover while increasing your appreciation for your colorful new best friends, Abe and Duff.

I’ve been waiting for this book since I finished reading the first Abe and Duff mystery, and I wasn’t disappointed. Abe and Duff were still their quirky, misfit selves and they went about solving the mystery in their own unique style. I’ve never been to Wisconsin, but the author made me feel like I was there. We learned a little more about the duo of detectives’ pasts and Duff picked up a clue involving a long time puzzle. Now I will wait patiently for book #3.

A re-read for me, in preparation for reading Where Art Thou? which has just been released. Just as much fun the second time around. A really good detective story with great characters, and funny too. Excellent series, on to the next!

Did I forget to review this? These mysteries are great, and as always, it's the characters of the detectives that really make them work.
