This is a good tour through stoicism with a very competent guide- fully debunking the positivity culture and the law of attraction with some fun stories. I had hoped for more of the author’s own spin and it is there but it is for the most part heavily traversing other people’s works (including the classics)- and that is no bad thing even if you are well versed in some of those texts as I am. The theme of self authoring and the section on death right at the end were strong points.
Excellent, informative, possibly life changing book. Derren Brown, yes the TV illusionist, gives a comprehensive overview of Stoic & Epicurean philosophy and how it can be applied in modern times to anyone seeking"Happiness". Beginning with an historical look at the origins of philosophy in 300 BC, this could have been a dry history but manages to be informative, enlightening and entertaining. A great read, recommended.
Wanted to like this, and thought the points and espoused philosophy generally make sense, but found it a real slog to get through. While it was a good reminder of Stoic attitudes, history, and their applications, I didn't get much that was new to me out of it. I found it overly wordy and verbose, and sometimes repetitive, and thought it could have used far fewer personal anecdotes.
A languid literary journey, adorned with stoic wisdom and narratives that remind us that life's essence isn't a constant parade of rainbows and chocolate chip cookies. I lost interest half way! Sorry!!
Great introductory analysis. Gives readers more to think about and further areas of philosophy to explore. Too much blabbering about a lot of the subject matter, like death and fame. I’m sure that’s just because my experience hasn’t taken me to desire/fear those things, but there could have been a LOT cut from this book.
This is an excellent book! I only had a couple minor quibbles that keep it from being 5 stars. I felt that the chapter on fame wasn’t applicable for myself and the major of readers. I also felt like it was repetitive at times. However, he incorporates Stoic philosophy expertly and he approaches the topic with unfailing warmth and humor. I can heartily this book.
Thought this would be a good read as recommended by a friend but almost too heavy and complex and I just found myself not following at all. Not for me.
