The book that will bring us back down the memory lane and help us revisit the small things that we miss out on as an adult, You Can Wind Down From Time To Time, is now finally available in English!
Wisdom from the stories of our youth: - Everyone’s an amateur in life - Actions over words Love like you’ve never been hurt - Slowly but steadily - The most precious things stay close in the most ordinary forms At times when life gets difficult to bear, you want to stop and hide from people, or just quickly take a deep breath to calm yourself, this book is here for you to tell you that this too shall pass.
To you, who is lost in the world of complicated adults, there is no treasure map or a perfect guide to navigating your life. It’s hard not to make mistakes or let yourself down, even so, it’s okay to wind down from time to time. Our problems don’t resolve themselves overnight. Sometimes, you just need to take a deep breath, a warm fuzzy blanket, and a clear mind. When you wake up, you’re ready to face the new day with a newfound growth to take away yesterday’s pain.
“Although our wish lists and bucket lists won’t get any shorter, we certainly have those moments when all it would take to make us happy are green grass, warm sunlight, and a cup od coffee on a relaxing afternoon.”
This book has opened my mind, heart and soul in ways i wudnt have imagined. I felt stabbed, i felt cradled, i felt mistaken and i felt understood and accepted.❤️
Usah pandang orang lain, tengok diri sendiri.
Definisi berjaya pada setiap orang berbeza-beza. Berjaya ni bukan pada material seperti kereta mahal, rumah besar, kerjaya hebat. Bukan!
This is the kind of Self-help book that I need. It's very light to read and will also make you reflect on life. It's okay to make mistakes, to not know what you want to be, and to feel left out. It's just part of adulting and that's totally fine, It's okay to "Wind Down from Time to Time". ♥
"The best thing in life is always around me in the most ordinary form."
It’s a delightful book with a soothing writing style, and the cute and colorful illustrations added more points to this book and made it more enjoyable to read. This book is very relatable to us going through a phase of adulting. There were many life wisdoms that the author relates through fairytales to our daily lives.
Although most of the lessons are something we already know, it is a great book to remind us about the importance of “wind down from time to time” as we are imperfect, make mistakes, and always have room for improvement. That’s fine. That’s just a part of adulting. Remember it and live your life at your best. My favourite topic is “Life is self-service.”
This is my first book of Korean literature. Though it is heavily Western, it is a double-edged gift, of course, for Dan Kim managed to enlighten her confessional narrative-self-help book via fragmenting and condensing important fairy tales and children literature from the West. I also noticed—is Korean literature known for two M’s? Me and middle-class? Whether such perspective is coming from a purely Korean coming-of-age, there are things glossed here, dismissed in fact, with the alternative of cherishing individuality (or symptoms of this today’s generation? Its solipsism?) and living in a consumer culture, that celebrates more than criticizes.
Nevertheless, I have learned a lot, and the last line has an aphoristic beauty, it is unforgettable.
My conclusion is... self-help books are not for me.
I only bought this book because Park Chanyeol (aka the first Kpop idol I ever loved) gifted this book to his friend, Zico.
While I liked the concept of the whole book being built around fairytales, the 'essays' themselves did not really speak to me. I think there were about four essays that kinda stood out. But the rest is meh.
The illustrations are poignant and exquisite. I started off the book thoroughly enjoying it, thinking it might just be my new favourite genre. After some time, the book seemed like an easy way to make money from publishing a book. The illustrations maintained its quality, but the writing relied more on the short references to classic tales and novels. I mean, that doesn’t seem like a lot of work isn’t it?
There are personal stories or elaborations to the references but they aren’t wildly moving nor exactly beautifully-written.
You would’ve heard most of the tales referenced here. And for some of the less familiar ones to me, I happen to get to know them as I was reading Bedtime Stories for Adults, around the same time I’m reading this book. Mind you, that book was an even bigger snooze fest than this LOL. (Omg a whole different review for that but it’s also an easy way to publish something out there???? I mean that one, literally just chops bits and pieces from other stories 😭 They really are bedtime stories. Not because they provide comfort, but because they’re just so boring and unrelatable (not the best way to describe but that’s all I can come up with for now).
I bought this at PBAKL (2023?) and initially thought it’s definitely a keeps since the illustrations are authentic. Halfway through, I got so angry by the thought that it’s an easy way to make money. However, the illustrations are so good and some messages are noteworthy for those starting out in lives, which made me think that it’d be a good book to “pass down” to Sarah. From that point on, the book acted like a love letter from me to Sarah ❤️
Alas, despite all the negative reservations I had of the book, it ends up becoming a treasure in my home and will remain on the shelves.

Such a pretty and dainty book! I remember not being thrilled to buy the book when I saw the cover. But I was happy to be proven wrong when I finished it. Indeed, thou shall not judge a book by its cover!
Beyond the aesthetics though, this book is filled with heart-warming passages from (1) fairy tale / children’s classics excerpts and (2) the author’s personal life experiences. “A comforting message from your childhood for everyone in the phase of adulting.” I haven’t read most of the classics referenced in the book but it was still delightful to understand a portion of the story this time from an adult’s perspective.
This book talks about appreciating the unnoticeable, persevering for our heart’s desires, understanding our true self, and a reminder to be grateful even for the setbacks and the times we need to just be human, to just take a break.
Some excerpts:
Amor Fati — Love your fate Carpe Diem — Seize the day Vis-ta-Vie — Live your life
Live this moment! Live it now!
Life Is Self-Service
"Don't you have any mother or father here?" "No, not the least little tiny bit of one," said Pippi happily. "But who tells you when to go to bed at night and things like that?" asked Annika. "I tell myself,” said Pippi. "First, I tell myself in a nice friendly way; and then, if I don't mind, I tell myself again more sharply; and if I still don't mind, then I'm in for a spanking—see?"
This is my 3rd time reading a Korean Non-Fic and my 1st time purchasing a book for it!! I consider this as my investment because the book is kinda pricey but after months and months of delaying it and letting it just be in my virtual cart, I finally checked it out and read it in 2 seatings!
I love the illustrations and excerpts from different children's books. I also love the warmth and empathy of Korean writers. Even though this was only an English translation book, I could still feel the comfort that the author sends to its reader. I especially admire it as well when the author shares her personal experience in life.
I thought at first that this book is more about resting physically but I'm glad that it also includes resting from the pressures that we feel, acknowledging the small things that brings joy and to honor your progress whether big or small.
I am so happy that I was also able to write excerpts of my thoughts and realization in my own book. I did it in this book for the first time and I was inspired by a borrowed book from Irish (I Decided To Live As Me and Being Comfortable Without Effort)
I'm excited to have the other copies, soon! If it sparks joy to me! 😆
"In this world, we can hardly live doing only what we want to do.
Likewise, the pursuit of dreams isn't always fun. It may be fun at first but at one point, we definitely face weariness and hardships. We want to give everything up in moments when we see no progress, get no recognition from others, get physically drained, or feel that circumstances aren't on our side.
Reaching one's dreams isn't as easy as it seems. Not only is it hard to look for things that we ike or are good at, it also requires us to move forward with steady perseverance. Besides, an individual's effort isn't enough because sometimes external factors- family situation, financial condition, social emvironment, and other matters- that hinder the path to one's dreams exist.
Your perseverance may not be apparrent, but it's the most worthwhile and solid achievement in life.
So long as you try desperately, passionately, and perseveringly, you can dream anytime- and you can start over that way."
This book contains numerous references to past children's storybooks. I appreciate how the author attempts to encourage readers to view the side characters from new perspectives, as opposed to just focusing on the main characters in several stories. However, it didn't help me much with my battles. I had high expectations for the author due to the engaging title, but the book did not meet those expectations. I wonder if the issues I encountered were due to translation problems in the Malay version compared to the English version. Overall, I can say that the Malay version failed to keep me engaged until the end. In my opinion, it lacked that special “oomph!” that would have made it compelling.
Amor fati - Love your fate Carpe diem - Seize the day Vis-ta-vie - Live your life
The most consoling and tranquil experience may be had from this book. I'm glad that this book has helped me recall all I went through as a child, even the most mundane experiences. This book that enables me to reflect on my personal development and to express gratitude by reawakening a previously improved aspect of my inner self. And if so, I am going through something, if some days are being difficult, if it's hard to get out of bed, if I'm burn-out; then this too shall pass, my mind will be settled in no time, the agony will subside, and once again, I will step forward.
Initially bought this book because I was a fan of Park Chanyeol (hello exo-Ls!). I wasn't really expecting much but this book became a source of comfort for me in the past few days. I tried to read it slowly to absorb and reflect on the life lessons that the author was tackling.
Reading this book was like a warm hug! I loved the illustrations too which made reading more enjoyable.
You Can Wind Down from Time to Time reminds us of our childhood fairytales and how these lessons could be applied in the chaotic world of adulthood. ❤️
You will never regret reading this. It was soothing both for my emotion and where I am right now. I know, all of us feel like we are a failure especially when (inevitably and unconsciously) we compare ourselves with others or batchmates, so I want to share a phrase that somehow makes me feel okay: "We own different lives. We have different life pace."
I initially planned to read utmost 5 pages whenever I would be sad, but I failed. I lasted for 3 days only.
The last entry made me cry, and I didn't realize the droplet on my eyes until I blinked.
This is the first nonfiction book I've read : (, and it was a great introduction to that genre. I'm afraid of reading self-help books because I do not like being commanded to do certain things, but this book isn't like that. This book has a gentle approach, and it reminded me of the little things I often overlook. I do not always agree with what's written here, but I still learn from the author's perspective. I'm sad that I had to put it down because I am already done. I'll definitely reread this. ALSO, I love the illustrations <3

"There's no ideal path in life because we're all just first-timers in the process of discovering our own life narratives."
"So when it comes to love, we all need time to see, listen, and understand each other's language as if learning a foreign language."
Beyond the beautiful illustrations, reflecting life based on fairytales, this book contains wisdom that you can apply in your daily life. Beautiful, comforting read.
"The best thing in life is always around me in the most ordinary form"
Finally done with this book. I also tried to annotate it because this is the first translated book I owned. There were many learnings and nostalgia feels while I'm reading this. I'm planning to give this books maybe to someone who I know can be happy to receive this because this books made my heart warm.
It's an easy read but I tried not to rush in finishing the book. The book is totally relatable for all of us going through the "adulting" phase. I love how the wisdom from fairytales and children stories were used as pointers on how we can face adulthood. We get old and mature, but we should never lose the inner child in each of us. ✨️ By the way, I also love the illustrations. ❤️
Non fiction utk mental health yg sangat best. Tulisan ok2 jer.
Sangat recommends kpd mereka yg tak brp suka baca buku non-fiction tp ada masa kita nk genre self help utk relaxation.
Despite the seeming middle class values emergent in this book (on which I will write), I think this remains a heartwarming read that reminds us of the important things in life.
Of course, with the hope that everybody enjoys the gift of perspective and action.
"The best thing in life is always around me in the most ordinary form"
Very gentle, give a lot more perspective on the children's books that we've enjoyed when we were young. Nice to read before going to sleep, for it gives you a little reminder that everything is alright 💜
The artwork here is well made but I must say that the content is just fine. Nothing exceptional to write home about. Most of the lessons discussed are something you'd already know. But still, a great read to remind yourself of things you should be doing to deal with adulting.
