Regency with too much drama. I skimmed ahead. It offered an extended epilogue: I took a pass.
Timothy, an earl, was left at the altar when Diana was a no-show for their wedding. Subsequently, Timothy drank too much, gambled too much. At cards, (5 years on) he won a small Devon estate from a duke.
Timothy experienced a series of accidents. (Why?) He considered giving up hard spirits. Timothy thought he saw Diana in Devon? Later, she claimed she wed another.
Di held onto her secret for too long. I wanted more love and less drama. Oh well, (as Mick sang yrs ago) you can't always get what you want.
Timothy was stood up at the altar by Diana. He spent the next five years self-destructing through excessive drinking, continually over-testing himself physically, gambling, etc., and is badly injured following a large win at a disreputable hell. In order to heal from the injury, he goes to the small estate that he won. En-route there, his carriage loses a wheel. When he and his coachman are fixing it he sees Diana for the first time since she stood him up. This is the story of their past, present and possibly their future. It is well written and fast reading. The plot, particularly the mystery, is well done and fits the period perfectly. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.
Exceptional storyline to this read. And the characters were fantastic. All started with a wedding that the Lord got stood up.Went on a five year drunken gambling and whoring ,to try and forget. Then nearly died in an accident after being run over. This story goes on and mystery pops into the mix.He leaves London to recover and then the fun starts. The Extended Epilogue was a great ending to a exceptional read.
With her new novel "The Earl She Lost" Lisa Campbell has really done it this time. It is a terriffic spellbinding mystery and a romance. There is a runaway bride and a heartbroken groom and a reader trying to figure out what happened. But the answers do not come easily, even long time Agatha Christie aficionados are going to find that they must bide their time to find the truth. It is truly one of the best books I have read in a while. I give this book 5 stars. It is truly worth your time.
Very good story, held my interest and I finished in a few hours. With that said, I must also say that was the dumbest reason I've ever read for not getting married. I supposed it made sense in the context of the story and the times but the more I think on it the dumber it gets.
A tragic story of broken hearts, Timothy is left at the alter, no one knows what happened to Diana, not even her father has see or heard from her in five years! She hides a secret and must stay lost! Amazing story of love, devotion and strength!
Amazing story! I liked the fact that we don't find the reason for the break-up until almost the end, which added a bit of mystery. The characters had been well build and the romance betwen them is beautiful to follow. Definitely worth the read!
I loved the fact that Timothy still kept Diana in his heart all of the years, but he drank and lived life roughly. Diana had put others lives ahead of herself. Things went wild for awhile and finally seem to connect.
They were meant to be married 5 years ago and he still loved her and she still loved him even though threats to her life and Jonathan's got in THE way. Now they are truly free to wed one another and raise Jonathan together. Everyone should be happy.
Pretty decent story. Sometimes the writing makes it hard for me to picture exactly what or how something is happening. Occasionally something just doesn't make sense. Timothy is a nice hero.
