The basic synopsis is our two main characters are Damon and Ruby. Ruby got involved with a bad guy who sold drugs and guns. She has a child with him, Maya. She's protective and also has trust issues because the bad ex kept Maya away from Ruby in truly dastardly criminal fashion. Ruby gets away eventually and gets Maya. But all that leads up to trust issues. Then we have Damon, an undercover DEA operative. He's trying to bring this gang down and pretends to befriend Ruby while undercover. They are attracted to one another. They go out... Ruby finds out that Damon is a member of this big family, the Coltons. Suffice it to say learning that Damon initially was only interested in her because he and the DEA thought she knew where the former gang head might have stashed some illegal guns doesn't do much for her trust issues. Damon's got trust issues from a past relationship, but it doesn't become a huge issue for him when they start having an attraction. But Ruby is angry for being deceived. But they both sorta want the same thing (besides each other) and that's to bring down the criminal gang because Ruby's feeling like she's gonna have to look over her shoulder for the rest of her life if she doesn't get the gang out of her life. The way to do that is to help Damon and the DEA play along. The gang lost track of where the former leader stashed the guns because, well, he got whacked... Dude's a criminal so that tends to happen to them. Anyway, they have to contend with feelings and their need to get the gang in jail. So they work together although Ruby has strong qualms.
Spoiler alert --
My thoughts: This was entertaining. I felt like the dialogue was clunky in the first half maybe. I got the feeling this Colton family is like a series or something because there seemed to be back story I didn't know. Like there's Damon's dad and uncle and they are jerks, but how do I really know? They are apparently contesting a will and it's split the family and Damon's grandma's apparently a mean old lady. So there might have been some history I didn't really understand. Story moved along at a decent pace. One thing though was I thought maybe the whole telling me over and over and over again how Ruby had trust issues and didn't like that her relationship with Damon started out with him deceiving her. It was REALLY pervasive in this story. Like after page 100 I was thinking... okay I get it. If that theme had been a fight scene I think I would have felt like the butt-kicking Rocky took in the first round against Ivan Drago.
Good book. Assigned to find out what she knows, undercover DEA agent Damon Colton spent several months cultivating his acquaintance with Ruby Duarte. Her dead ex-boyfriend's criminal followers believe she knows the location of a stash of illegal arms and will do anything to get them, and the feds want them first.
Ruby and her daughter Maya (who we met in The Secret Network) have done their best to put that terrifying time behind them. However, Ruby lives in a near-constant state of fear as she worries that her ex's friends will come after her or Maya. The only bright side is her growing friendship with Damon, the bartender who works down the street.
Damon has a serious problem with his undercover assignment. Far from being just a subject to watch, Ruby stirred genuine feelings in him. When he reaches the point of asking her out, to draw her out about her ex, Damon's guilty feelings surprise and disturb him. At the same time, Ruby feels a connection to Damon that she cautiously explores. Because of her past, Ruby doesn't trust easily, but Damon feels right to her. After a few dates, she's ready to let him meet Maya. Maya and Damon immediately took to one another, and seeing them interact melted my heart. This adds to Damon's unease about his deception, especially as he attempts to push Ruby for information about her ex. Ruby's growing feelings for Damon war with her feeling that there's something else going on.
Things become complicated when Ruby encounters Damon in his real life and discovers his deception. Hurt, angry, and feeling betrayed, Ruby rips into him. Damon tries to explain, but she refuses to listen or to see him. When the gang that Damon has worked to infiltrate pressures him to find out what Ruby knows, his protectiveness kicks in. Now he must convince Ruby of the danger to her and Maya and to let him protect them. I liked seeing them work together. They spend time together, along with Maya, as they try to find the missing weapons. Their feelings for each other grow, encouraged by their happiness during those "family" times. However, trusting those feelings comes hard for both Damon and Ruby. Damon doesn't trust women at all after being badly betrayed by his fiancée, and Ruby has trouble believing anything Damon says after learning of his deception. When everything is over, Damon and Ruby have a chance to start over if they are brave enough to take it. I loved the ending, as Damon puts his past behind him and has the patience to give Ruby the time she needs. I loved the realistic look at their future rather than the magical solving of all issues to make a happy ending.
The suspense of the story was terrific. The threat to Ruby from Santiago and his minions leaped off the page from their first appearance. The tension of Damon walking the fine line between his undercover persona and his need to protect Ruby kept me hooked from start to finish. I could feel Damon's frustration as he and Ruby searched for the weapons while trying to keep Santiago at bay. The final confrontation was a nail-biter, and I loved watching it happen.
I love this series. This is the first book I have read by this author. So we have book #8 Damon Colton has gone undercover needs Information from Ruby Durante because he knows shes got information about her ex who now is dead. So Damon plays it cool, and warms up to Ruby. When Ruby takes a chance and lets him meet her daughter it’s a big step for her. Maya is a very smart girl, but she’s deaf. When Ruby attends a party she sees Damon, and gets the surprise of her life. All the stuff she knew about Damon was a lie.
Buy the book and see what happens. So much more to come.
If you have followed this series Book #1 that’s were Ruby comes in. Check it out.
Loved the book!!! Loved the romance between Damon & Ruby. And how Damon became a father to her daughter. Even though Damon lied to Ruby about who he was but he was trying to bring down her dead ex's criminal followers. But the more he spends with Ruby the more he loves her and wants to stay with her.
