Family Sins #1

Sins of our Fathers

Rate this book
Never has it been so easy to buy a human being. The more innocent, the higher the price tag.

Ginger Vincent took the underground world of human trafficking by storm with her technology-based black market. As a woman, she’s got her work cut out for her when the vultures begin to circle, closing in on all she’s built.

When someone more beast than man is taken on a routine acquisition run—who has no name other than Sin—Ginger’s curiosity gets the better of her. She decides to keep him close to learn his secrets. Little does she know, Sin is there for a reason, and that reason is to take her down.

With equally bleak histories and jaded world views, they both begin to question everything they believe in the face of one another.

When two dark souls collide, will the world burn, or will they?

Sins of our Fathers is a DARK romance with themes not suitable for those under 18 or those with triggers. Please check the trigger warnings before proceeding, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Ahhh! I was so lucky to get an early copy of this and I ate it up! I did read the prequel prior to this and it's something I would suggest to really understand Ginger's character.

This is not in any way a "sweet" romance, but it is dark with taboo elements and that's just the way I like it! Two of my favorite things about the story as a whole was (1) Sin is not your average hero in the looks department. He's rough and would most likely scare small children and even some adults. I liked that his unconventional appearance was one of the things that attracted Ginger to him. (2) I feel like a lot of books try to force the badass female lead, but Ginger really was all the way through the book. She still has the capacity for emotions, but she was pretty fierce all the way to the end. There were sometimes her ruthlessness was hard for me to comprehend, but I would hope it would be that way for most people.

I was absolutely thrilled with how this story progressed although there were a few parts that made me a bit sad. There are definite triggers in this, but especially in the prequel. There were some really nice details that I quite enjoyed, and I also really loved the back and forth between Ginger and Sin. This was a well-written, dark, delicious, sexy read with some gore to tie up the entire package.

I’m going to start by saying that I had very little idea what I’d be reading when I picked up Sins of Our Fathers. In the book’s blurb, Ella Burns mentions that readers should check the triggers before proceeding. Well, I didn’t. Let’s be honest, trigger warnings are more like enticements to this dark reader, but they do at least let you know what you’ll be reading about. But, you know what, it was a good surprise.

This book is dark. We’re not talking so pitch black that it would make certain dark authors squeal, but dark enough that it couldn’t be considered grey in any form. Aside from the taboo aspects (I can never quite decide whether, in general, they’re dark or not), you know the lights are going out when Sin asks Ginger if she wants “to see something fucking cool?” and proceeds to flay her prisoner as an appetiser.

Somehow, in the darkness of the night, the forbidden touch is so much sweeter. It’s easier to forget the world around me, to let go and give in to the temptations offered by such masculine flesh. In the daytime, it would be too hard to give in to these desires. But here, now? I know that sinning couldn’t feel better. ~ Ginger

When it comes to our protagonists, Ginger and Sin, It’s a toss-up over which is more dark and damaged. One experienced a brutal childhood before being acquired by traffickers; the other supposedly doesn’t remember his childhood, only retaining memories formed since a vicious accident. Apparently. Trauma and darkness lead both protagonists to hide behind high walls and secrets, never prepared to open up to each other. Ginger is intrigued by Sin and the mystery behind who he is. Sin has deep-seated hate of Ginger, her having wronged him in the past.

Of course, they’re going to clash and inevitably explode in a cloud of steamy sex. Isn’t that what we’re here for? Better still, that angry, lustful aura hangs over the book until we pass the 90% complete mark. Sins of Our Fathers isn’t one of those books where they have a quick fumble and years of animosity is forgotten. No, this book is a constant barrage of lust vs hate.

I want to push her. Want her to try to break me. ~ Sin

I really enjoyed unravelling the mysteries in Sins of Our Father. Who is Sin? Where has he come from, who is he working for and why? What is the mysterious order 622? Who is the bad guy in all of this? What is Krystof up to? Is Hannah anything more than a bitter crush? Yes, the answers are revealed but only at the author’s pace and especially to provide another little gut punch to one of the characters.

A good torturess knows that pain has many forms.
As I leave, the first line starts, playing loud enough to drown out Sin’s screams. I let out a light laugh, flipping him the bird even though he can’t see it.
“Baby shark, do do, do do do do—” ~ Ginger

In Ginger, Burns does a brilliant job of portraying a woman making her way through a man’s world. As she repeats the mantra “you are a bad bitch, and you can do this,” it’s plain to see that Ginger suffers from self-doubt, no matter how tough an image she presents to others. Despite the front, you can still see the scared little girl that she battles with and hides.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ SINS OF OUR FATHERS

* Kickass female main character
* Fast-paced
* Non-stop action

So different and so good

Ginger is the confident woman in charge of a prosperous human trafficking business with brother Chris, head of security, by her side. But a man of unknown past is "captured" and has an agenda of his own, not just the business but also Ginger. Secrets are revealed; sinister agendas are brought to fore and unbidden passions rise in this uniquely entertaining, fast-paced, taboo love story.

I loved all the characters in this story -- protagonists Ginger and Sin, with brother Chris in his trusted role. Ginger was determined, strong, and with a hidden vulnerability; Sin was confident, persuasive, twisted; and Chris was clever, manipulative, loving -- all products of dark childhoods. And all had secret agendas. One of the most appealing elements of the story was the scarred antihero rendered so compelling, so sexy as to feel drawn to him, attracted to him. Sin was simply hot! And so was the chemistry. The love scenes was very spicy.

A big fan of the pace, on the fast side, but did not feel rushed. Sufficient world and character building for full immersion. Tumultuous, cunning, with such magnetism, I often wrestled with my feelings about the characters and their misdeeds. And beautifully enough with the author's writing talent, I was able to resolve myself with the outcome. This was favorite book, on the darker side and an excellent read.

Bloody, violent and utterly delicious!

“She hides her marks, her monster, better than me. But we are both scarred beasts in our own right.”

DAMN!!! This story was exciting, titillating, taboo and deliciously dark! I could not wait for more of Galina/Ginger’s story after reading about her past in Sins of the Family. I knew she was going to be a fierce badass woman, but I was not prepared for how dark and depraved she would actually get. Ginger takes us readers into a black hole of twistedness and debauchery that some may never crawl out from! She sucks us into her world, keeps us on the edges of our seats with anticipation of what was going to happen next, and tortures us with her devious and crafty ways. Ginger is a sinfully delicious woman in every way.

Ginger is crafty, smart and not afraid to cut the balls off of anyone who betrays her. She never lets the demons of her past control her future, but when a scarred but sexy man gets thrown into her life, everything gets turned upside down. Sin has been employed to take down Ginger and her company but even he has no idea what being in the presence of Ginger’s light would do to him.

The push and pull for power and dominance between Ginger and Sin was everything you wanted it to be. It was filled with intense emotions and sexual innuendos that would have anyone squirming. These two have this instant connection that you just knew would turn into something unexpected. The question is: would Ginger kill Sin or would Sin be her downfall?

Fantastic writing that will have you gripping your kindle tightly; squirming on your seat with all the deliciously erotic moments; basking in the bloody violence and gore; and gasping at every twisted and shocking moment.

I loved every second of this fantastic story and I can’t wait for more just like it.

This story was disturbing and yet, I couldn't stop reading. It was interesting to see a woman in the role as "leader" because so often in stories with similar stories it is a man in the role. Definitely taboo but that wasn't what captured my attention as much as the mystery of who Sin was and wanting to get into the mindset of Ginger and why she was the way she was. This reminded me a lot of Hostel. Even though this book made me uncomfortable, the author did her job by creating a story that kept me invested in seeing how it ended.

Sins of our Fathers by Ella Burns is a dark taboo romance. This is the first book in the Family Sins series. I would recommend reading Sins of the Family which is the prequel to the story but not required.

The book does come with a warning "Sins of our Fathers is a DARK romance with themes not suitable for those under 18 or those with triggers. Please check the trigger warnings before proceeding, and don’t say I didn’t warn you."

I absolutely love Ella's books they are dark and twisted and leave you begging for more! I was pulled in from the first chapter and binged the book in one sitting. I really enjoyed getting Ginger and Sin's points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

This book was definitely one of my top reads for 2021. I would highly recommend if you love horror romances, dark romances, or taboo romances.

A dark "romance"?

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5)
Trope: taboo
Angst: 😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Triggers: dubcon, incest, human trafficking, knife play, miscarriage

Not for me. I've read some pretty dark stuff with all the triggers mentioned above, but this was just too over the top for me. I had a hard time connecting with the heroine with her complete lack of humanity, despite her past. Still, the story was well written, hence the 3 1\2 stars.

Wow! I couldn’t put this book down. So dark and twisted. Galina/Ginger is one tough woman. She was put thru a lot as a child. As an adult, with one of her brothers, she has her own underground organization. She was very close with one of her other brothers, but he died when she was a teenager. When she captures Sin, I had an inkling of idea where this story was going, but wasn’t prepared for what would eventually take place. Wait to you see what happens next. You will definitely get sucked in. Sin is a mysterious man who is on mission but also hides a very dark secret. Will Ginger fall for him and his charm. She certainly puts him thru the wringer. What about her brother who work with her, is he working with his sister or against her? He definitely shows a jealous side to him once Sin appears in the picture. I can definitely say the ending I didn’t see coming.

Deliciously dark! Fantastic character development. Only issue was a little predictable. However, not enough to ruin the story! Should absolutely read the prequel though if you didn't it would not be as predictable. Definitely a must read! Read in 1/2 a day and it was thoroughly enjoyable!

Deliciously Evil, Dark, and Twisted! How do I even begin? This book is beyond twisted. The characters are just flat out evil and I absolutely loved it! A father so f***ed up he never should have had kids. The kids did what they had to to survive and some didn't. So some twisted sibling relationships came out of their childhoods. What these now adults are capable of doing without even flinching, just beyond anything I could even imagine. I loved this book from page 1 (I couldn't hardly put it down) and by the time it came to an end, I was rooting for the evil ones to win. Ella you have brought me into your dark world!

I think I should start off by warning you that this book is extremely dark. I’m a horror fan so I’m well used to dark themes and gore. But I’ve also read a lot of dark romances. Most of them aren’t THIS dark. They’re very tame in comparison. If you can’t handle gory scenes in movies, then you won’t like this book. There is one particular scene that is descriptive and gruesome. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Now that that’s out of the way, I enjoyed the book. Ginger is the tough female lead that you often hope to find in romance novels but never seem to. I’ve read a lot of romances where the tough girl turns into a submissive weakling that basically bows down and does whatever the male lead wants. Ginger isn’t one of those girls. She stands her ground all through the book. She’s solid and consistent, and I love that about her.

Sin, on the other hand, there isn’t much to say about him. He’s pretty much your typical bad boy that you can find in numerous other romance books. There’s nothing unique about him. He’s big, he’s tough, and he gets turned on at the drop of a hat. He does have a few layers but overall, he’s just your average tough guy male character. You either like him or you don’t.

I liked the story. It kept me entertained the whole way through. It had a great flow and everything seemed to fall into place. There’s a few twists and turns that would have been fun but were spoiled by the triggers list in the opening of the book. If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read the triggers. They pretty much tell you everything that is going to happen.

If you like horror, you’ll probably enjoy this book. If you like happy rainbows and you can’t stand blood and gore, do yourself a favor and skip this one.

I had a hard time putting Sins of our Fathers down... I really wanted to know what would happen!! TBH, I liked it better than I thought I would after reading the prequel. 😁
Creative story; although the whole human trafficking/donor organ trade was a little superficial. Sin's true identity was clear to me almost from the start. The sex scenes were seriously hawt! 🔥 The prequel had cleared up a lot about the family ties, but there were still plenty of things left unspoken. Like: what was that all about Kris sneaking into Ginger's bedroom in the middle of the night? Great scene 🔥... but then there is never spoken about it again?? Just one of the things that left me 'unsatisfied'. At the end of a book, I want no loose end, no unanswered questions.... but that's me! 😉
This sure was a dark taboo story... but for me, 'something' was definitely missing to make it a 5 star read. And what an ugly cover!!

As the prequel Sins of the Family is very short, I think those pages should just be added to the book!! That would make this book 'complete'!! I even dare to say that if you don't read the prequel, you'll miss a lot of valuable information!!

Sins of the Family and Sins of our Fathers were October BotM at EE; thank you Ella Burns for so kindly providing free copies of Sins of our Fathers to our GR group!! 🥰

So far out of all of Ella's books this has definitely one of my favorites! This whole book was just freaking amazing!

For cons I'd say that my only true dislike was that Ginger didn't see the deception of Kris sooner as well as getting captured? I feel like if you're the head of a trafficking ring you should know how to fight and defend yourself however that's just for me personally. I myself didn't read the prequel before starting this book and instead read it after the fact but I would definitely recommend it so that you get a more in depth look into Ginger and her brothers past! I will say though that while Ginger didn't see the deception sooner she did in fact have no qualms about his justice being served either which I was really happy about. Honestly, this whole book was just a hit for me and I fell in love with Ginger as well as Sin. Sin is everything I love in a hero (or anti-hero) depending on how you look at him.

If you love dark romances and everything taboo then this book was made for you without a doubt! If you have trigger than I please encourage you to read through the trigger warnings and heed their warning.

First, let me say, this book is FUCKED!!
Second, this is what I mean when I say I want a story that is different and exciting... but also completely cooked, like my gawd 😩

If you read the prequel then you already know this book was gonna be nothing but foolery from the jump but if you didn't, then go read it and understand how and why these characters are the way they are.

Ginger the fmc legit runs a human trafficking business... yea, you read that right. And this is not some, let's only get bad guys, nah, she takes innocent men, women and YES kids too 🤦🏾‍♀️
Sin is the mmc and he has the task of shutting her down but if you read the prequel then you catch on early the issues that arise from that.

While reading the afterward, I could totally see how this started as a horror cause that was the vibes I was getting especially that one death scene oof 😳 it was brutal af. Burns said as the reader we would be rooting for the mains and I'm like 😄 I know you're fawkin lying. These people are despicable; no way was I rooting for them at ANY point. I want to check out more of her work though.

Umm..... I love a ruthless badass FMC and a pitch dark romance novel, but the main characters (in this case the fmc) to genuinely deal in human trafficking, especially when often the humans they auctioned were innocents is something that I can never ever digest or even try to do.
I kept reading the book with the hope that the human trafficking was simply a front to rescue innocents and selling only the deserving ones but nope Ginger really was a heartless despicable Madame who dealt in human trafficking, which really spoilt the whole romance and reunion that was going on the book.

Loved Sin and his ruthlessness. His secret was predictable right from the time we get to see his scarred torso, but I loved how he turned out to become a feared assassin. He certainly deserved way better than a former human trafficker, he deserved someone equally fucked up like him but not someone who felt no remorse selling young ones and innocents.

I guess it could be a great read for someone who could overlook the giant giant giant flaw of the fmc.

So disturbingly amazing.

Have you read a book that is so dark and amazing and everything and nothing that you ever dreamed! I just did. This book was nothing less than what I wanted and everything I needed to read. I read the previous one first, and that led me on the journey for wanting to read the rest. Boy, am I glad!! This was literally so disturbing and amazing and I just couldn't stop read G. It was like the scene in GoT when Geoffrey FINALLY dies. I was just so engrossed.

First I’ll say I absolutely love dark romances!
They are by far my favorite.
So I had no problems reading this dark taboo story.
But for those that are iffy or are squeamish about taboo books heed the authors warning seriously ⛔️

This is a complex twisted storyline and plot.
From start to finish it’s edgy, gritty and very intense.
And not just dark but pitch black.
This is in my top five of very dark books I’ve read and I’ve read a lot!
The characters are also not the typical characters found in “romance” novels.
They are complicated and and freaking twisted.
Their moral compass is basically nonexistent.
But they are also a product of their horrific upbringing and environment.
Before starting this book I highly recommend reading Sins of the Family.
It gives more insight and depth into how these characters came to be how they are.
Ginger, Sin and Kris are all depraved in one way or another or actually in many ways.
But again I see them as a product of their environment.
Would they have been different people if their circumstances were different, maybe.
Would they have been so evil or vile and lacking all sense of right and wrong, maybe.
We will never know because we can’t go back in time and change things.
But the book is an edge of your seat read, my heart was in my throat while reading the story.
It’s unpredictable and very unique.
From beginning to end it’s filled with dark twists, suspense and horror.
It was also gripping and emotional.

I just finished this, and I'm still trying to process it. I did read the description, and I did know the trigger warnings, BUT I was still unprepared for the actual story.

Yes, it is set around trafficking but it's mainly focused on Galina and Sin. I just can't say much because I will give the story away.

If you love dark, extremely taboo romance books, then this is for you.

Well it wasn´t what I expected, the prequel was interesting but this story wasn’t so much. Leaving aside the taboo, wasn't that exciting. I would like to find in this story more about the twins and their mom, and if you add a Gallina becoming a villain, yeah it was a huge NO for me.

WOW….. I mean WOW!!! I am left completely speechless. If you love the dark, depraved and the taboo then you are going to love Sins of or Fathers because it is all of those and so much more. Galina is one bada$$ woman let me tell you, after everything that she had to endure growing up as child in her father’s household to still come out on top is nothing short of amazing. Now don’t get me wrong she is all kinds of cray and messed up but she is still amazing. Sin is mysterious and dark and oh so delicious but also hides secrets. I honestly didn’t know where the story was headed but where it did go was nothing that I was expecting heck now it took a turn down a dark and twisty path and I was here for it. This is a must read and that ENDING!!!!

What the hell was that?!?! I was NOT expecting it to turn out the way it did...but I was NOT disappointed. Sins of Our Fathers had everything I ever want in a book, and some things I never thought I would be into. I was cheering for Ginger and Sin even after the major plot twist that was dropped out of the blue. I'd definitely recommend reading this book, but seriously check the trigger warnings before reading.

Sins of our fathers was my first story by Ella and I'm absolutely in LOVE with her writing style! As a reader of the dark and taboo, SOOF was exactly what I needed to quench my thirst. Ginger was a bad ass and Sin was the antihero we love to read about and I need so much more of them! Reading Sins of the Family does give you some back story of the past so I would recommend reading it before Sins of our Fathers.

This was defiantly a dark and twisted romance but a bl@@dy good one ! There may be things readers may not like and I thought I might not like it as much as of the human trafficking aspect, but i enjoy the authors books and she didn’t disappoint ! This book was great kept me enthralled all the way through and I have to admit I did guess and get right one of the twists to the story, but i only thought of it not long before I found out what it was ! And it was a good one! Twists and turns and waiting to find out what happens will keep you reading and wanting more ! Highly recommend!! I hope There is more !

Did you read the prequel? No, well I guess you lost out. I have been waiting for book 1 to drop ever since I read it. Go find it...I am telling you it’s a must read.

Ginger, aka Galina to those who read the prequel, is a boss biatch. She may have been looked at as nothing by those around her but we later learned she is the queen.

Sin is who he is. I am sure he’s not called Sin just because.

What some of y'all might not know is I love a good blood play scene. Ella just put herself into the top 5 of my favorites. There’s a lot in this type of scene that will captivate me because it’s one of those things I would never do but love to read it, if written correctly. Ella, girl, you did not disappoint.

Look, just read the book and especially the prequel, it’s that dang good.

Nuff Said.

Read Responsibly.

Another dark, taboo, sexy sexy little thing from Ella that was in no way a disappointment, but as always a wild ride with some twists and turns (all of which I actually saw coming! 😉😝) and sexiness and fun 😝 complete with an unconventional HEA, but an HEA nonetheless, and the usual longing for more 👀😍🤤😉
