Warship is a celebrated annual publication featuring the latest research on history, development, and service of the world's warships.

For 45 years, Warship has been the leading annual resource on the design, development, and deployment of the world's combat ships. Detailed and accurate information is the keynote of all the articles, which are fully supported by plans, data tables, and stunning photographs.

The varied topics in this year's annual includes articles on the Imperial Japanese Navy carriers Soryu and Hiryu , post-war radar development in the Royal Navy, gunboats in the Imperial German Navy, Soviet battleship designs of the early Second World War, modern European frigates, and the origins of the Yokosuka naval yard.

Although warships of the "classic" period (say, 1890-1950), with steel hulls, stream propulsion, and heavy artillery armaments still remain the predominant subject of this annual, it's interesting to see the editorial team and their writers continue to branch out. This means you also find articles about French "Cold War" escort ships, contemporary trends in European medium-weight surface combatants, and the development of radar in the Royal Navy post-1945. If you have been investing in this series there is no good reason to stop now.

Warship is an incredibly reliable and valuable annual, and the 2022 edition is another excellent iteration. The writing, editing, photographs and diagrams are all to a very high standard, and the range of articles contained within covers a wide range of time periods and perspectives:

- The Beginnings of Soviet Naval Power: The 1927 Flotilla Leaders
- "'Foolin' Around the French Coast": The Challenge of Operation 'Tunnel', September 1943 - April 1944
- The IJN Carriers Soryu and Hiryu
- The Development of the Small Cruiser in the Imperial German Navy - Part III: The Gunboats
- The Battleship Jaureguiberry
- Postwar Radar Development in the Royal Navy
- After the Sovetskii Soiuz: Soviet Battleship Designs 1939-1941
- The Genesis of Yokosuka Naval Yard
- Esploratori of the Regia Marina, 1906-1939
- Modern European Frigates
- The Australian Bathurst-Class Minesweeper Corvette
- C 65 Aconit: France's Prototype Ocean Escort
- Ship Medallions of the Regia Marina
- The Royal Navy and National Names

There were also ‘Warship Notes’ (short articles) on ship medallions in the Regia Marina, and national names (of ships) in the British Royal Navy, and a Warship Gallery on the scrapping of HMS Agincourt, New Zealand and Princess Royal at Rosyth, 1923-1925, as well as the valuable book review section.

I enjoyed all of the articles, and it’s as ever hard to pick a favourite – the consistency of standard is one of the hallmarks of the annual. As per previous annuals, the book is pitched at people already fairly familiar with historical warship design/naval history, and someone without having a few books in the field under their belt might find bits hard to follow, but for someone who is already into naval history, it’s a highly recommended.
