X was a Pokémon Trainer child prodigy. He hated being in the spotlight, so he took to hiding in his room and avoiding everyone—including his best friend Y. But now a surprise attack has brought X out of hiding!
Now it’s up to X to use the skills that made him champion to defeat the threat looming over Vaniville Town.
Can the reclusive X and the determined Y help their friends ward off two Legendary Pokémon and the mysterious Team Flare?!
After waiting an exceedingly long time for this volume to be serialized beyond the tiny chapter versions I didn’t have high hopes for the quality of this arc of the Adventures manga, but boy was I wrong!
While the main characters still have the dumb names X and Y, the story so far is great. Team Flare is appropriately sinister, the battles have been cinematic, and the supporting characters are being introduced. This series might give Diantha the personality that the games denied her. Already she has stepped in to protect the kids and matched wills with Lysandre.
I loved the Kalos region Pokémon so getting to see Pyroar get its moment is fun! I also forgot how much I loved the character design for Tierno. And man it is making me miss Mega evolutions even more!
Anyway I’m excited to start volume 2. If this series really is being collected in only three manga volumes I might have to pick it up.
The Pokémon Adventures manga is known for taking the beloved characters from the games and giving them deeper personalities, unique motivations, and intense storylines—and the X•Y arc is no exception.
This volume follows X, a former Pokémon battling prodigy who has shut himself off from the world after media pressure crushed his spirit. But when Team Flare’s sinister plans unfold, he and his friends—Y, Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor—are thrown into an adventure that forces him to face his past and fight back.
The plot is engaging from the start, blending action, humor, and emotional stakes in a way that makes it more than just another adaptation of the Pokémon X and Y games. The battles are intense, the stakes feel real, and the way Mega Evolution is introduced adds extra excitement.
The art by Satoshi Yamamoto is vibrant and dynamic, bringing Pokémon battles to life in ways the games and anime don’t always capture. Character expressions, action sequences, and even the smallest details in the Pokémon designs make every panel enjoyable.
Overall, Pokémon Adventures: X•Y is a fantastic read for both longtime fans and newcomers. It expands the world of Pokémon X and Y while adding depth, personality, and a fresh take on the characters we know and love.
I’ve always liked the games and even the anime more than the manga, but this.. This was actually really good and very enjoyable!
Kalos is my 2nd least favorite Pokémon region but this makes me like it and appreciate it more. I still don’t understand why the main characters are named after the game titles.. Like Y even though it’s short for Yvonne it still just feels strange because her name should be SERENA like in the games but oh well lol (can’t forget X, love him)
The story is different than the story in the video game but that makes it more enjoyable and spoiler free! (As of writing this I’m currently playing through Pokémon Y) It also gives the characters more personality which I really REALLY like a lot.
I’d recommend this to anybody who’s interested in reading Pokémon manga, definitely going to read the next books
(Also, I read the first one back in 2019 which was only 60 pages or something like that.. Glad they made the adventures ones where I don’t have to read a gazillion tiny books 😂)
This is a pretty good opening to Kalos, with all the characters this XY introduced, they have done it quite well. I feel like they should have made the Team Flare executives look different, as they just all look the same. I get they can’t do much, but they all look the same.
Best character this book: For a French region, having paparazzi traumatising one of the main charters is great. So X.
Best quote: “Lunchtime! What would you like to eat…?” Actually makes Lysandre a threat, unlike in game where he’s just a fucking joke.
Most of the characters are EXTREMELY annoying like deeply agitating & everyone treats this child star with intense social anxiety like he just needs to “get over it” & there is 0 support from adults!!! all very vexing
However the adventure itself is fun & I really like X. Y and co. are loser comic relief characters & the “villains” are such watered down team rocket knockoffs it’s sad…. but all of that can be ignored once you get into the swing of things
This is a great debut for X and Y, I love the characters, and the story so far is wonderful. My favourite is Trevor, he's very knowledgeable on pokemon and is working hard towards his dream. X is quite isolated, I like him when he's a bit more out of his shell. I really love Y too, she's very extroverted and knows exactly what she wants. It was a great start, I'm excited to read more.
Starting with this new saga, the characters of X and Y are followed by the other three characters who are just about as developed as in the games (not much). X starting out as depressed and washed up is interesting, but it makes the character uninteresting when plot happens. The pacing is snappy, but they also don't seem to be doing much with the gym leaders.
Has the potential to be the best main Pokémon Adventures series since Ruby & Sapphire, imo! Off to a great start with engaging characters — the angle they’ve taken with X is unique, different to any previous protagonist we’ve had, and I’ve found his character very interesting/enjoyable to experience. I have read the opening Black & White and Sun & Moon volumes, but couldn’t get into the rhythm with them. My expectations of Pokémon was lowered, BUT — this 300-page compilation was fantastic. Like the anime and game, Lysandre makes for an engaging formidable villain, which I think some of the more recent Pokémon Adventures have lacked. I’m excited to see what happens next!
