Suspicion, deception, and fear are chasing Penelope Prince from her picture-perfect life. As the dark energy escalates, she realizes her sanctuary is a trap she willingly walked into decades ago to escape the paralyzing pain of a college nightmare. Stalked by secrets from her past, Penn is discovering her greatest battle may be with herself. The pursuit to reclaim the free-spirited artist she once was quickly deteriorates into a desperate and dangerous fight to save her life. Two years after Drawing Down The Moon, the second book in the James Island Trilogy highlights the lives of Penelope, Jade, and Emerson from their college sorority days through the trials and tribulations of womanhood, miscarriages and motherhood, sexual assault, sweet summer loves, and bonds of friendship that strain but never break.Weaving threads of connection, the story of Agnes, their mysterious mentor, continues to explore the vision and violence that influence her mystical journey. Like a wheel careening downhill, challenges and choices accumulate like debris. Can Penn or Agnes prevent the past from destroying her future? Emphasizing veracity and tenacity, Turn Of The Silver Wheel celebrates the courage and creativity vital to revolve and evolve.

I read this on the heels of the first in this series. You do not need to read the first book in order to read this one, as it quickly catches you up with the events of the first book. In my opinion, this book is much better than the first (I have the first a generous 3 stars, this is more of a 3.5 stars.) the first novel was narrated alternating between Jade in two different timelines and Agnes in the last. This book was narrated by Penn in two different timelines and Agnes in the last, just as the first. This book is set two years after the first one ends. There was less ritual/goodness worshiping (whatever you want to call it) in this book and to be honest I appreciated that. This book also requires a trigger warning for rape and domestic violence.

Turn of the Silver Wheel by Shawn Keller Cooper is the continuing story of 3 sorority sisters and their lives before, during and after graduation. Turn of the Silver Wheel concentrates on Penelope (aka Penn) who with the help of her two sisters and the guidance two older women (Agnes and MaggieI - one white and one black) deals with a rape, the abuse of a husband and finally comes to grips with her marriage. I enjoyed the first book Drawing Down the Moon more than this book, however I am looking forward to the third installment.

The characters, especially Penn and Agnes, are beautifully flawed and human. Their journeys remind us that healing isn’t linear and that courage often grows from pain. The writing is vivid and lyrical, filled with lines that linger long after you’ve finished reading.

The Turn of the Silver Wheel by Shawn Keller Cooper is the second in a series about three sorority sisters. There are some connections to their collegiate days, but it's moreso about the women they've each grown into which isn't without lots of challenge and hardship. What I love about this series is the realness with which the stories are told. While fiction, the emotions are raw and authentic. I also appreciate that they cover topics that are heavy, but it's stuff that needs to be talked about and explored! Before diving into this one, you definitely need (and are definitely going to want) to check out Drawing Down the Moon just so you can get to know and (then continue to learn through this one) the captivating stories of these women as individual and sisters through the years.
