“But perversely, my freedom threatens my kind. If I stay on the island, my heritage will eventually be exposed. The Na’fhuil will be hunted again and forced into service against their will.”

This book is insane. I am not a big fan of the shifter-vampire PNR but once I started with this book, I couldn’t put it down. With action that starts from the first chapter and doesn’t let go until the very end, I am kinda relieved there’s only one book so far because I would have been tempted to not go to work tomorrow. And thank the author, while the story still continues, there’s no cliffhanger. This, right, here is why reading is my favourite past time, because when you get that book that is as captivating, entertaining and a whole lot swoon-worthy, the hours spent with a nose buried in this fictional world are well worth it.

Meet Abby, our FMC, a Walker, polite to the fault and a self-proclaimed coward,

“And why do you believe this makes you less valuable? Even if you are not a Jumper, your ability is still powerful.” “Because for one thing, I can’t stay inside long and for another…” Abby moved her legs to the side, purposely breaking the tenuous connection she had with Samuel. “I’m a coward.”

She is on the run and hiding from the government agency that used her powers and those like her. She is unaware of her strength, bravery and heroism in a way that is really refreshing and innocent.

“Abby didn’t regret trying to help the woman’s husband, but cracking a vampire over the head with a glass bottle hadn’t been her smartest idea. Next time—please don’t let there be a next time—she’d remember vampires had extremely tough skulls and would find something less fragile to hit them with. Maybe a two-by-four.”

After saving Queen Rose from an assassination attempt, her magic is exposed and the Queen orders for her to be taken to her territory and placed under her protection, or vice-versa.

Our MMC, Samuel is a “head of the region’s Guard, …. one of the highest-ranking Fae Touched in the ESC” and “in charge of every wolf shifter in the territory and the Alpha of its strongest pack.” From the first encounter, he knew there was something special about Abby and while his wolf could tell, it took a little while for him to figure it out or come to terms with it. While sworn to protect the queen and the region, he could not deny his natural instinct to put Abby above all else.

“Not for the Clan. Not for the region.” His voice sounded like broken gravel. “I want you just for me, baby. For us.”

“I will protect you always. I will guard your heart and those who are dear to it.” Ferwyn vows. Pledges he would give to his Ca’anam. But he was giving them now and meaning every damn word.”

I love that while their relationship was not an insta-explosion, I could still feel it coming which made it organic and believable. And when it got there, damn!

“She was in love with Samuel Walker. Head over heels, intoxicatingly besotted, madly enamored, and embarrassingly smitten in love. The once-in-a-lifetime, happily-ever-after, fairytale kind of love. The kind her parents found in each other. And it scared the crap out of her.”

“Abigail Colleen,” he said solemnly, tenderly ... “I will love and protect you always …. I will guard your heart and those who are dear to it …. My Clan is your Clan, my pack, your pack … I freely seal my soul to yours and claim you as my own.”

There is so much happening in this book that hooks you in and keeps you at the edge of your sit. This book is about much more than love and finding mates. It’s about politics, betrayals, friendships and personal struggles about self-preservations, duty and personal relationships.

“Sometimes, duty is all we have to fall back on when forced to make impossible decisions that can change our lives and the lives of others. Doing our duty might be the only thing that makes sense when everything else has gone to shit.”

The secondary characters are also as interesting as the main ones and there’s a whole lot too choose from and all very fascinating. It will be interesting to see more on them with the coming instalments. There’s so much potential with this series and I, for one, am glad to be part of this journey.

I will definitely be reading the next book.

Abigail (Abby) MacCarthy, has been running and hiding for a while now, but when she finds herself unwittingly in a situation where she has to use her powers to save the Vampire Queen, she gains a degree of attention she never wanted. Alpha wolf Samuel Walker is the head of the protective detail for the Vampire Queen and leader of a large pack, when he comes across Abby and her tantalisingly unknown scent he finds his focus shifting, he is driven to protect Abby at all costs, a good thing to, since Abby is being hunted by more than those she escaped from.

This book had be engaged and surprisingly engrossed, I lost track time.

My big issue is that Abby isn't a fierce kick-ass heroine, I wish Abby had been way more kickass, especially when it came to defending herself, where was the training she would have learnt at the Facility? That being said she is strong and sweet, but honestly a bit more depth and fierceness to her character and this book could have been awesome.

Freebie on Amazon, Jan 2020. Staying on my kindle.

It took me a bit to get through this book. Not because I didn’t like it but because my mind kept wandering. Being a mood reader is hard. But I came back to it after finishing a couple different books from another series and it was great. I like Abby and I like Samuel but I don’t like the telling of the story of things being retold the next night. Why not live them in the moment instead of upon reflection? Another thing that bothered me is there were many many paragraphs but not enough dialogue for my tastes I felt like I had to skim here and there because the book is a bit wordy.

However I still liked the book, I still was intrigued with the story, and how Abby and Samuel do, but I was disappointed to find out that the next book is another couple. This has always been an issue of mine even when I do like the subsequent books, I jut feel like we didn’t get enough time with Abby and Samuel as a couple I’d like to see them navigate this and some plot but I get why it would move to a different couple because this story is so intricate.

It’s very involved though in some ways I feel it was predictable. Like we all know that when the heroine goes out in the book when she’s been attack and should be guarded, we know something will happen. It’s just inevitable. But still overall I enjoyed the book.

I will say there were a lot of character names, and I was getting confused by who was who.

Still I liked the concept. It’s slightly different to other Fae books we have come to know. I like that.

I started Fae Touched hoping it was going to be as promising as it looked and I wasn't disappointed. From beginning to end it held my attention and caused the loss of sleep that comes with "just one more chapter". I enjoyed how Roman took her heroine and made her strong but not to a point where she didn't need anyone to help her. I also loved that while most vampire queens kick ass and are masters of caring for themselves Roman spun hers on her head and gave readers a queen who didn't have those traits. Yes, she could be dangerous to humans but in the supernatural world she possessed no known skills for defending herself beyond those triggered by her fight or flight response in a situation. She also had the fashion sense of a newt, which again- really refreshing.
The romance and friendships between the characters was great, as was the flawedness (is that even a word???) of the Queen and Abby, and the coldness of Myles. Truthfully, I actually really liked Myles even though I'm sure I'm not meant to.

I probably would have liked to have seen a little more action from Abby with regards to defending herself. You know she underwent training at a facility but I have high hopes that she trained in more than how to use a gun and control her body and mind. I'd love to see her be able to use some basic self-defence or even be a great throw with blades. Something that doesn't require her to be an expert but would be extremely helpful in removing herself from a captive situation.

Ultimately this is a book you should read. The action starts immediately, the characters are realistic and fallible (which makes me love them even more), and the plot is really well written. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the storyline continues to develop when the next novel in the Fae Touched series is released.

I love Abby. Sweet, shy, southern, yet imbued with incredible strength of character. This story, a blend of shifters, vampires, and jumpers/walkers, was instantly intriguing and full of action of the battle AND steamy variety. (Fated romance is the hottest, amiright?!) Beautifully descriptive and paced, this story grabbed me from the start. Fun fact: the author has a glossary of terms on her website! Can't wait for the sequel!

Abby's love

I enjoyed the adventure of Abby and Samuel. Abby's body was put through a lot when she saved others, but she would do it again and again to save the man that she loved. I know their story is not over, too many unanswered questions. I look forward to the next book!

3.5 stars rounded up

I really liked Fae Touched's depth of characters and fast-paced action. There are many moving pieces and complicated politics happening, but this is also just the story of a bruised young woman who's a unique paranormal, Abby (h), finding a safe place, even if it doesn't seem like it's safe at first. Samuel (H) is a powerful wolf shifter Alpha and he immediately feels protective of Abby, but their romance is a slow build/burn especially with all the chaos around them. The story is written in third person, mostly dual POV of Samuel and Abby with one POV close to the end of a villain. No ow/om drama (but H is j/p because that's how paranormals roll), neither appear to be virgins but basically no history given, bc not discussed/used that I can recall.

Abby is in hiding because she's a half-blood descendant of a fae with unique powers that have previously caused her to be captured and used. Due to a complicated past with her powers, she effectively never uses them, until she does to save the local Fae Touched Queen (queen of the paranormals in that area basically). Abby is then brought along to be the queen's assistant and effectively a prisoner again, but partially for her protection, and surrounded by people who also care about her well-being. Which brings her in to close constant contact with Samuel. I loved both of these characters and their immediate attraction but also how they didn't lose themselves to it in the midst of some major upheaval happening in their world. Samuel is all growly, bossy, caring shifter male and Abby is sweet but with an inner core of steel. He has to ensure that she's well-fed and loves to touch her. She derives a sense of safety and calm from him. They do get steamy and there are a few descriptive scenes. There's also set steps of ritual marking when a shifter takes a mate.

A whole heap of danger, suspense, mystery, and action happening in these pages, along with politics and I will admit that I was pretty confused at the start with the world-building in terms of the political structures of the world. This is a contemporary setting but with a history of fae involvement and paranormal creatures. The book begins with an excellent intro to the fae and paranormal but I had a hard time following the multiple governing bodies and hierarchies, although there is a glossary at the beginning that my kindle opened up passed that point and I didn't realize was there til I was done. I also had trouble at times with how complex the issues the characters were facing were with multiple dangerous entities who may or may not be working together. It made for an exciting read, just sometimes a bit convoluted.

Fae Touched had some excellent side characters, some that I imagine will get their own books, and I enjoyed how well-developed they were. Abby has a protective and caring older brother, Samuel has multiple packmates who are important, the queen and prince play major roles (although the prince is something else, not in a good way, and I have to wonder how that character's story will go if he gets one), and many more. The villains are truly dangerous, to the main characters and the rest of the world. Lots of interesting magic and different supernaturals as well.

This book does include some heavy moments and darker themes at times including violence and torture. Abby especially gets put through the wringer in several scenes, but Samuel's always there to comfort and help her heal. The story ends with a HFN and the author has a note that these two will make appearances in other books, but the rest of the series will focus on different couples. I'm a sucker for an extended epilogue and while I understood why that may not be possible in this case with the plot, I did want to see Abby and Samuel more settled in what their day-to-day looked like. It's definite though that they'll be together always and truly loved each other so warm fuzzy feelings there.

Superb storytelling!

I loved this book! Fae Touched has action, intrigue, romance, a smidge of humor, and a very healthy dose of alpha male wolfery which I’ve become addicted to since my recent discovery of urban fantasy. I lost myself in Roman’s superb storytelling and Fae Divided, book two of the series, is on my TBR!

What a pleasant surprise! 3.5 stars

This book was very pleasant surprise. If you know me then you know that I’m not big on reading continuing plot or continuing romance series so I was wary of starting this one. Thankfully, the romance does have a HEA at the end and only the plot is continued through the series. Here are my thoughts.

1. Story. The plot was very well thought out and probably the highlight of the book. I enjoyed seeing it all unfold and was kept intrigued until the last page. One thing to be aware of, is that, due to the plot, there are a lot of moving players and introduced mythology. While I really enjoyed learning about this new world and some of the unique parts of it, it did feel overwhelming at times. I would occasionally have to flip back to the glossary to remind myself what a term meant or have to think back on who a certain character was. For the most part the author did a good job throwing reminders in but I definitely think I would have been overwhelmed if I had skipped reading the glossary beforehand like I sometimes do. Like I said this wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as the author is setting up a pretty well formed world and that takes a lot of backstory not to mention setting up a hefty plot for the series. Just something to keep in mind, this isn’t necessarily a book you can only have half your mind on.

2. The main characters. I thought the characters had great chemistry. I loved seeing them together and I think they meshed really well. Unfortunately, with this being such a plot heavy book that means that characterization tends to take a back seat. I wouldn’t say the characters were superficial as I felt I connected with them emotionally, but I just didn’t feel I got to know their story. I would have liked to have the characters get to know each other past the emotional connection. It would have been nice to see them have a conversation that didn’t progress the plot but instead progressed their relationship and each characters’ background depth but it just didn’t happen. The reader never learns much of anything about either character’s family or how they grew up. There were also not a whole lot of relationship “moments” outside of the physical where I just got to see them being a couple. As I said, including all this is hard to do in a plot heavy book so I think the author did an admirable job with creating a strong emotional connection between the characters, I just felt there was something missing to keep me from loving the characters instead of just liking them.

3. The writing. The writing was good. No extremely noticeable mistakes. The author does tend to overuse some words or actions. There is some new terminology in this book that’s different than the usual shifter terms (using “convert” instead of “transformed” or “shifted”). I thought “convert” was a bit of a weird word to always keep using and a tad jarring to constantly see it. Maybe it’s just something I’d have to get used to and then I’d be fine with it, but I would recommend the author not rely so heavily on that term and mix it up with other words.

This book had a great plot that kept the reader engaged until the end. While I would have liked to have seen more character and relationship development, the amount I got is pretty typical of an action and plot focused book and satisfying enough. Would I reread? Probably. Would I recommend? I would recommend this, especially for people looking for something a little deeper than the usual paranormal romance. Happy reading!

Witches, Vampires, Shifters and Faeries what more can you want? Try this new series!

If you like Witches, Vampires, Shifters and Faeries then you just might like this book by Lisa Rae Roman. It has a unique twist that most of the Faerie books out there don’t have. Faeries have returned to their own world but left behind are the rest of the Paranormal community. The have designated areas in the world that they are suppose to be safe in and rules that they follow like don’t show the normals their magics.
While the Queen of the Vampires is out shopping a trip that no one is to know about she’s taking ends up with some assasins trying to kill her and her bodyguards they find someone unexpected.
Abby is a rare halfblood that is on the run from a facility that is threatening her freedom. She’s unique in the halfblood world. Taken back to the Vampire Queen’s home for her safety she gets to know some of the others living there especially Samuel. He can’t seem to stay away from Abby but for a good reason.
To find out more You’ll have to read this fantastic book! I can’t wait for the next one!

A good start to an intriguing series.
When Abby helps the Vampire Queen during an assassination attempt, the half-blood fae didn’t know that her life was going to change!
With hot werewolf alpha Samuel in charge of her safety, Abby has to navigate her way through dangerous waters, and find out exactly who and what is behind the danger she now faces.

This is the first book in a series, and a new author. Well written, it’s not you usual super-fast paced Urban Fantasy, but a slow building entry into a new, alterniverse.
The author slowly reveals the world in which the characters live, and much, though not all, of the back story of the fae-touched in this universe, gradually comes to light.
The romance between the two lead characters, is not precisely slow-burn, but neither is it insta-love. There are sex scenes, but it’s not the sum total of what the book is about, the background story plays a big role.
It doesn’t exactly end with a cliffhanger, but there is an open-ended storyline that remains unfinished.
If you enjoy Urban Fantasy, and PNR, then you will probably enjoy this series.
A worthy beginning.

Thoroughly enjoyed and want more

From the first page to the last page, this was an easy flow of words and a delightful encounter with characters you can’t help loving. Vampires, wolves and Fae may not be anything new but the freshness of the approach and the cleverness of the world-building changed this into a great read. Samuel was a worthy hero, sexy, strong and masterful, and I loved that Abby doesn’t doubt his motives, it turned a fiction into a believable love story.
Can’t wait to read more from this author.

Hard to believe that this is Roman's debut novel

This book is well written, with good world building, intriguing characters and a great plot. There is definitely a conclusion for the protagonists, however the overarching conflict will obviously be addressed in later books. This was a really enjoyable read! My only problem: this is her first book, so we have to wait!

got bored

I appreciate the writers storytelling but it was too slow paced and the build scenes we actually boring (too much technical talk).

I was holding on hope for more action but there isn’t any except the foe chapter. Mind you I only got 1/3 in.

I would give this author another try. She is excellent at think thought her ideas. Just needs to grab my attention more.

Heather's Notes
I have been meaning to read this book for a while. It is a good book, and I enjoyed the story. I think it needed a little more explanation about the way the world works. It was a little confusing with a lot of titles, but not a lot of explanation. Still the story was understandable without and I liked Abby and Samuel. I want more Conlan, but he doesn't seem to have a book :(

Great story.

The world building was good, although there was a time or two it was poorly placed in the middle of dialogue and when the dialogue resumed, I had completely forgotten what the conversation was about and had to go back. I am still a little confused about the four states thing and how the shifter clans work within an “SC”.

The characters were very well done and I just love Gregory, although I’m a bit suspicious of innocent childlike mind, considering the position he holds with the ESC’s thlan.

It was a bit of a slow burn with the annoying denial of feelings on behalf of both of the MCs. And then it went fast and furious. Speaking of fast, there were time passings, like two days or two weeks, after something major happening right before the time jump with no recap or summary of what the fallout was of the event. I can’t be more specific without spoiling.

All in all, it was a great read and I look forward to reading the next installment. See my notes, highlights and commentary on Goodreads. Happy reading!

Abby has been hiding from those who would exploit her seemingly extinct heritage. In a world of political instability between humanity and the fae touched vampire, witch and werewolf races, Abby's ability stands to tip the balance and their rulers will fight to obtain her. Then into her life explodes Samuel, the pack Alpha who's determined to mark her as his.

Ok, so the ageing feminist in me did have a few words to say about biting your mate and big hairy dominance, but it all got drowned out by the rush of menopausal hormones. Which is to say I flat out loved this book, the raging Alpha Wolf and the stone cold cynic of a Vampire Prince. The plot bounced along at a fair old pace, the characters were loyal or stuck in the knife, as the case may be, and that central romance grabbed you in all sorts of places.

I did get caught up in this story and spent a big chunk of time reading it when I should have been doing other things. Abby has an unusual power that she is afraid to use for fear of being discovered. The world was interesting: Fae 'touched' (vampires, shifters, and witches) vs. the 'untouched' (humans) and the difficulties of the two groups understanding each other and getting along. There are some steamy scenes, this is definitely not for YA readers but fortunately those scenes don't take over the plot. The individual story arc is completed fairly well, but the book does end in a cliffhanger. Also, the author nearly lost me with the prologue. It was confusing at first and the terms she uses are unusual and I can't imagine how to pronounce some of them. I almost didn't read the book, but did plunge on and ended up enjoying it.

I really enjoyed the romance aspect in this one. Samuel was a great Hero, and I loved how protective he was of Abigail. I wish their romance had started a bit earlier in the story and that we would have had more on page time with them as true mates. Another thing that I had difficulty with was the storyline. Although the main romance is about Samuel and abigail, I found that the story itself didn't necessarily always revolve around them and it included so many different characters it was a bit overwhelming. I would of preferred a simplified story that really shone a spotlight on the 2 main characters. I found it difficult to find Romance Books featuring shifters that aren't just filled with smut. This book was had a story and was well written, so I'll definitely be continuing this series.

The cover is what really got me wanting to read this book, when I read the synopsis I mentally sighed "guess you're reading another werewolf romance book Willow." This story follows Abby a girl trying to stay hidden from the facility, a government group that helps jumpers control their powers. Abby isn't a jumper though, she's a walker. She knows the facility would never willingly let her go so she takes matters into her own hands. After saving the queen 's life, Abby meets Samuel the alpha who may be the only one who can save her from her past. After finishing this story, I can say one thing Myles is an a*shole who you spend the whole book questioning whether or not you can trust him, and the novel rushed into romance too quickly.

CONVOLUTED

Very convoluted book. But I did like it after I got some of the language straight in my head. Maybe the author should stay with english, and stay away from complex words and groups of words, or maybe not so many in one book. A few at a time. A whole dictionary in one book is way to much. I almost stopped reading it a few times, but she did write the characters so that you became interested in the outcome. I' m not sure I am invested enough to read part 2, it may take a day or so before I make up my mind. To the author don't give kup. The characters you have already written about are unique, and very likeable. Samuel came on a little strong but all alphas are. I do find myself wondering how I do in that world.
