Before “The White Sails Series” was released, I had a strong intuition that Emma Lombard was about to deliver something my sea adventure seeking heart would love. After reading the first book, I was certain of it, and when I finally read through her second, I had yet another confirmation. Again, Lombard excelled in all manners. Something I noticed early on was the ripening of the writing style, which was already of the highest quality in the first book, but as for any craft, practice makes perfect. Lombard’s writing style is not the only thing that has matured, her characters have as well. Although Grace’ stubborn nature has not softened, marriage, motherhood, and individual growth have definitely molded it. She is so much more considerate and reflective, aware of consequences. It felt right and natural watching her transform into an enhanced version of herself. The same factors have also changed Seamus’ rigid Navy man’s nature, even more so than Grace as in this second book we see Seamus’ hidden emotional side (which we all knew was there of course). Their relationship has also evolved. They are amazing parents, and you can see the beautiful shared burden of parenthood on them (the love, the worry, the exhaustion), yet they are still two lovebirds that go about life always hand in hand. It was excellent character development, and good character development comes naturally when you have elements that force characters to learn and grow. Grace and Seamus are forced to face numerous hardships... and that brings me to the “kill that character moment!” No, I won’t tell you the details, but know that Lombard’s writing was heartbreaking. I actually had to grab tissues. On a more uplifting note, I was happy to see some of the first book’s beloved characters returning in this second installment, and all the intentional references and connections to Jilly (his sister, his final resting place, and the Gilly Downs) were truly appreciated and needed, as Gilly shall always be missed. And finally, one of my most favorite parts: the sailing! Once again I was throughly satisfied with the writer’s depiction of the sea-fearing life. Emma Lombard is knowledgeable, and she never info-dumps her researches in her stories. Like a skilled seamstress, she sews them through the story and pulls you right in the middle of her scenes. I loved sailing on the Clover, visiting all the different locations, and the storms depiction were exhilarating! There is a particular storm in the story that really had me on the edge of my seat, not knowing if the Clover was going to be lost forever or if they would lose most of the crew to the storm. If you like a tale of one true love woven through history, sailing, and adventure, please do yourself a favor and start reading this series, and keep on reading until the end. I will definitely buy the last two books. Can’t wait to see where Lombard is taking this story.
