Anh Do

Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Grandma has another new invention, a dog transformation bracelet. Good timing, too, because everyone’s pets are now missing.
‘Do you think Dr Kane’s involved?’
Considering any time anything out of the ordinary happens in Duck Creek, it’s because Dr Kane has some new dastardly plan, I would have said it’s a given that he’s now in the pet-napping business. I would have been wrong.

It turns out that the pets aren’t the only ones MIA in this book. While Dr Kane is using his annual leave, the baddie void in Duck Creek is filled by the Collector from the Rise of the Mythix series. Also making a cameo is the front cover of the first book in the Pow Pow Pig series.

When I find subtle nods to author’s other books in the one I’m reading, I generally find it adorable and usually feel super smart for having found them. The crossovers in Anh Do books aren’t nods anymore; they’re beginning to feel more and more like advertisements.

They don’t even make sense most of the time. The Rise of the Mythix series have an older target audience than Ninja Kid so most readers won’t even know who the Collector is.

I accidentally read the ninth Ninja Kid book before this one so had been wondering how Noodles made their way into the family. I’m glad I know now but the constant crossovers are making me question how much longer I’m going to continue reading Anh Do’s books.

What has happened? I thought we were going to finish the story. A new one started. The old one was left hanging. I just wanted this to end. My girls continue to like this.

More crazy adventures with Nelson and his friends.
I have noticed Anh's new books seem to be doing more cross-over mentions with his other books.

4.5 stars. I love the ninja kid series. They take so little time to read but they are packed with fun it makes it well worth your time. I wish all stories were like that.

The writing is so tight everything is relevant even in such a simple story where pets go missing and you can turn into dogs.

The dialogue feels natural (and funny), Kenny’s reasoning and excuses are legit (and funny), the lessons are subtle and the parenting perfect (granny’s that’s a good idea affirmation but all you needed to do was ask permission reprimand).

I also love Charle’s consistency (i was just about to do that). And I also love the fact that ninja kid doesn’t always have to be the star. H-dude seemed to do more in this book.

I was surprised to see the PowPowPig mention and the Collector. Even though they are Anh Do’s creations their books have a different publisher, i had no idea they could do that. That was cool.
Here I am a full grown adult thinking how cool a kiddie book is. That’s what this series does, it brings out the kid in you. Kudos to the creative team.

Do continues to share more about the characters as the series continues. Nelson and Kenny's grandma develops a bracelet that turns humans into dogs. They are skeptical that this is needed but then all of the pets in town, including the dog they found, disappear. A group of kids sets off to locate all of the pets; Nelson and Kenny suspect Dr. Kane. To their surprise, they find a very different villain left from book 7. Everyone works together to rescue the pets but the villain escapes.
I appreciate the humor and the way the plots connect across the books. If a reader does not read them in order, Do uses the first chapter to bring readers to the point to start the current adventure each time.

The best part of this was it didn’t have Dr Kane, however, it is at times hard to suspend disbelief. Like the phone being okay after so much time in water.
