A sweet and relaxing, clean romance with a focus on community spirit and friendships!

First of all, I adore the title and the cover-lovely and atmospheric, they do set you in the right mood for reading this book. The Vilage Inn of Secret Dreams is the third book in the Riverside Lane series which focuses on four friends (Amber, Lucy, Belle and Molly) who live in a picturesque village of Cranbridge. If you have read the previous stories, you will be delighted to see the familiar faces. If not, don't worry, it can be easily read as a standalone.

This time it's Belle Clarke's turn to find her own happily-ever-after in her beloved Cranbridge. Belle has a propensity for wearing dark colours as if she doesn't want to draw any attention to herself and once you get to know her family story, it's easy to understand. She was sent away by her parents to live with her uncle and aunt, the owners of the only pub in the village. The Black Swan is in a desperate need of renovation and, to be honest, a new chef, as Belle's aunt can't cook to save her own life. The financial situation is so desperate that it looks like the pub will have to be sold. What will Belle do then and where will she live? Pete Kennedy, Amber's future brother-in-law and Belle's childhood friend, comes back home from Singapore and offers to buy the inn out, but he and Belle may have slightly different ideas about the inn's future...

I really enjoyed the setting and the heart-warming focus on the community this book has. Alison Sherlock touches upon some heavy topics-e.g. loneliness in the old age, youth unemployment, marital strife- but she does it with a light hand and sensitivity.

The protagonists were sweet and it was very easy to root for them. Belle, perhaps, was a bit quick to jump to conclusions, but otherwise, their romance developed naturally and realistically. I really sympathised with the main characters-Belle for her desire to live in a safe, friendly place she calls her home and give her best to the community, and Pete for his courage to try something new and then being able to learn from his mistakes (he is really a very likeable character!). You can't write a book about a village without a large cast of secondary characters, but it didn't feel overwhelming or confusing at any point- quite the opposite. Grandma Tilly and Amber are probably my favourite, but it was a hard choice to name just a few.

Can't wait to come back to Cranbridge for the next story!

Favorite Quotes:

Aunty Angie’s view of clothing, hair and make-up was that you needed to be seen from outer space. Preferably without the need of a telescope.

Angie’s cooking was legendary and, unfortunately, not in a good way. Her food was almost always revolting and was normally soggy, dry or inedible. Sometimes all three at once.

My Review:

The small village of Cranbridge sounds pleasant and gentle, despite the frigid weather and dodgy electrical service. I’m enjoying getting to know the quirky residents and uniquely appealing characters. Each tale in this series has involved rebuilding and strengthening not only the buildings but of the people residing in them as well as the village at large. I appreciate the pleasant sense of satisfaction of a community finding camaraderie and pulling together to help those in need as well as the sweet love story blooming amongst the toil and sweat. The engaging storylines were easy to follow and populated with struggling yet likable and oddly endearing characters I can't help but root for.

This author has a very light touch, and she keeps things mild and sweet in this book. If only this weren't yet another book where the MCs have been friends for years, and he has dated everyone in town, while she has been on ice the whole time!

This is a heart-warming book that is full of community spirit. It follows the same formula as the previous book but that definitely did not lessen my enjoyment. Furthermore, if you have yet to sample any of Cranbridge books, these are easy to read on their own too.

Working the the failing local inn, Belle feels like her time is almost up for living in Cranbridge. The Mucky Duck isn’t making any money, it’s falling apart and has become a bit of a joke with the locals. However, when old friend, Pete, returns to the village, he unexpectedly offers to buy the inn and bring it back to life. Saying goodbye to her aunt and uncle as they cruise the world, Belle can’t help but feel she is still on borrowed time. Not only does she suspect that Pete is merely there to make a quick buck and sell the inn for a profit, but Belle cannot ignore old feelings resurfacing for Pete.

Watching the inn renovations was really interesting. I liked how determined Pete was to create a glossy, high-end restaurant because of how much it just did not fit in with Cranbridge. Despite Belle’s advice, Pete thinks he knows best and I enjoyed watching him grow to realise what the village needs: not fancy food with unknown ingredients, but warming pub grub in a place where locals can meet. Furthermore, I found the disparity between Andre and Brad rather entertaining and was always rooting for Brad to succeed.

Like the previous book I read in this series, this book follows how a tired location gets turned around for the better of the community in Cranbridge. The writer references a couple of other worn down shops on the street and I wonder if this is a clue for further books to come? Undoubtedly, the community spirit that flows through the pages reinforces how pleasant a place Cranbridge is. I particularly liked seeing how everyone pulled together to help the needy and vulnerable as the weather changed.

I loved watching how Belle grows and how her relationship changes with Pete. A bit like the transformation of the inn, both Belle and the building find themselves and what their true identity really is. It was an interesting parallel to draw.

This is only slightly a Christmas book. The focus on the inn renovations is the key part of the plot, with only the last few chapters really becoming Christmassy. However, it is the help of the locals and the support they show to the inn that make this such a winter warmer of a read. Even if this doesn’t make it on your To Be Read pile this Christmas, it will certainly make you feel good at any time of the year.

An easy read, this book is fun with a touch of Christmas and a whole load of community support. Despite being a bit similar to the other Cranbridge book, I still enjoyed it and hope to return to this lovely village in the future.

With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another lovely tale in ‘The Riverside Lane’ series although some of the same characters feature in throughout the series they can all be read as standalone’s. I recommend you read them in order for a better experience. The Author Alison Sherlock concentrates on different characters for each book, in this case it is Pete and Belle. Pete is the younger brother of Josh from book one. When their father died he could not handle it and went to live in Japan where he had a lot of business success. Along with him leaving he found a letter which appears that their beloved father was not who thought he was, with business not going well he decides to go to Cranbridge, his family home with his secret letter firmly by his side. He has told no one.

Belle has had a terrible upbringing with neither parent wanting her she moved to Cranbridge years ago to live with her aunt & uncle who own The Black Swan which is the local village inn. She finally found a place where she belonged. The trouble is she is confident outwardly as she hides behind a facade of wearing black and never wants to be in the limelight.

The inn is under threat as her comedy duo aunt and uncle who row consistently behind the bar or wherever have had enough and want their life back so they want to sell. This means Belle will be homeless.

Pete drunkenly shouts out he will buy the pub and the drama sets in as the whole place needs renovating and he wants to try and take back his offer but the dramas ensue and the worst kept secret finally comes out.

It felt so warm and welcoming to be back in Cranbridge, amongst old and new friends. The regulars in the village are all present and just added to that feeling of coming home.

Although in Pete's case he really is coming home after 3 years in Singapore, but he's not sure he wants to stay in Cranbridge any longer than strictly necessary. He's also hiding a secret from his family, and seems in complete denial as to his true feelings towards Belle, who he tries to think of as just a sister!

But yet Pete decides under the influence to save the Black Swan Inn, and purchase it, but whether the village will like the changes he intends to put in place, or whether he will listen to Belle's ideas are another matter altogether.

I really enjoyed Belle's story, and also discovering whether the mucky duck will truly turn into a swan or not!

Was lovely to see more of Dodgy Del, and some of his latest get rich quick ideas are hilarious, but his heart is always in the right place, and it seems his nephew may not be the trouble maker he seems to think he might be.

I loved the interactions between Belle and Pete, from joking comments, to out right disagreements, you could tell their true feelings a mile off... well unless you are them!

I love the sense of community in these books, and just feel as though I belong there too. It's another joyous book to read. I found it to be a rather quick read, and I was carving out time to keep returning to the book, which tends to be the sign of a good story for me.

My fingers are crossed this isn't the last we see of this series as I'm enjoying it so much.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I was so excited to return to Cranbridge and see what the locals had been getting up to, its so comforting picking up a book when you can clearly picture the village layout and know a few of the characters that you will bump into along the way.

We have Amber and Jake at the shop, Lucy and Tom at the village hub and then we have Belle at the Black Swan Inn who is the focus of this book. If you've read the previous books then you will know that the Inn isn't in the best of knick... it's pretty run down, the food is terrible and is known by the locals as The Mucky Duck, but it's now looking like the Inn may be serving its final pints. Belle's aunt and uncle are selling the Black Swan as they just can't justify the cost of keeping it open any more which has Belle panicking about the future, what will she do, where will she go?

Cue Pete... Jake's younger brother, who together were Belle's best friends when she first came to stay in Cranbridge many years ago. But as they've grown older the distance has also grown and after Jake and Pete's father died a few years back, Pete ran away to Singapore. For Belle, Pete's leaving was so much more, she's harbouring feelings that are a bit stronger than friendship and after kissing him shortly after the funeral they haven't spoken, so imagine her shock at him offering to buy the Black Swan...

As they worked together (well... or not) to renovate the Black Swan Inn it was clear that they both had very different ideas of what would be successful, and let's just say, the proof was in the tasting! The final product sounds so cosy and inviting though and I'd love to have a local like The Black Swan somewhere near me.

I got well and truly lost in this book, as with everyone else in the village it is so obvious that Belle's feelings are mutual but she's too scared to voice these to the one guy that really matters to her. A bit like Pete being too afraid to mention his dad's letter to any of his family. It was great to see them both eventually put aside their differences and become a team, and that Christmas day scene was just so magical! Although the New Year's Eve party may just have topped it....

Another brilliantly warm and emotional read from Alison Sherlock. It’s been lovely being back in Cranbridge with familiar faces, and it was wonderful getting to know more about Belle this time. I loved her relationships with the girls even if she was still so hesitant to trust anyone. The harder things in life such as grief, poverty and loneliness are handled sensitively in this book and I loved how the village as a community was almost a character in its own right. A definite hug in book form.

The Village Inn of Secret Dreams was an utterly charming read and left me feeling giddy and smiling from ear to ear. This book is perfect for those readers who are a fan of Hallmark movies and looking to escape to a charming English village with delightful characters. The book’s cover can be a little deceptive because it makes it out to be a Christmas book when in my opinion, it really wasn’t. The book’s last quarter does take place over the Christmas holidays and has that festive feel to it. But most of the book takes place in October, and for me, it felt more like a fall romance read, which I loved because there aren’t too many fall-ish romance books out there.

This book has a delightful cast of characters, who are quirky, fun, and you can’t help but like. Belle and Pete are charming and endearing, and I loved reading this story from both of their perspectives. At the beginning of the book, Belle is prickly and closed off. Her parents mistreated her, affecting how she saw herself and how she interacted with those around her. It was lovely watching as Belle started to grow in confidence and learn to open her heart not only to Pete but also to her friends.

In her Novel the village inn of secret dreams Alison Sherlock creates a heartwarming story that all those who love reading romantic, forseable books will enjoy. Belle was sent to live with her aunt and uncle in the small village of Cranbridge at the age of 12. She lives and works with her aunt and uncle in the inn, so her world is shattered when they have to sell the inn because it is too run down to bring in enough money. The second main character, Pete Kennedy, is one of Belle’s oldest friends. They grew up in the village together, however, Pete left for Singapore three years ago after his father had died. Pete had found out that his dad had been married to another woman, and being scared to break his mother’s heart, he kept it a secret and tried to escape his problems by running away. When he returns to Cambridge, he decides to buy the inn to save it. First of all, he is the only one of all the villagers with enough money to do so, but it also bothers him seeing Belle that sad. As the two of them live and work together, they notice that maybe there is more between them than just friendship. However, it takes some time to accept it, especially for Pete, who has never been the type for long relationships and is scared to hurt the girl he has always seen as his little sister.

The village inn of secret dreams is a wonderful story that makes you want to read the whole book in one take. Although there are not many surprises in the plot line, it never gets boring and touches your heart.

The novel is suitable for everybody, however, it will probably be enjoyed the most by young people who like romantic stories.

I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it.

The story
Belle has lived with her aunt and uncle in the little village of Cranbridge since her parents split up when she was 12. They fight and bicker but at least they both love her. The couple own the Black Swan Inn, a local pub and Belle works for them. But the inn is getting shabby and they don’t have money or the will to do it up. The inn is put up for sale and in a drunken moment Pete, Belle’s friend decides to buy it. It allows Belle to stay on, but for how long?

My thoughts
This is a sweet story that shares how miscommunication or fear of dealing with your feelings can bring one so close to not connecting with those you love. I really enjoyed the parts when Pete realised that he was enjoying being in the village and able to contribute to the community.

This was a decent cosy romance but I didn’t like it as much as the first book in the series. Pete and Belle both came across as too prickly for me. And why would Pete not employ Amber to help decorate the restaurant? His ideas sounded terrible to the reader too. But then again he was attracted to Belle’s terrible fashion sense I guess. Lucky for him no one got food poisoning.

This series is a bit too predictable for my tastes. I’m guessing the next book will be about Molly and her choice between Logan and someone else, Brad the cook maybe?

My least favorite of the three so far but still a pleasant, unproblematic read where nothing much happens and the life in the village is peaceful and calming. I’m ready to move in.

Great follow up to the others in the series and lovely to see the other characters pop in and out. This is Belle's story and I loved watching her relationship with Pete develop. When he makes a rash decision regarding the village pub, however, not only is their relationship put to the test but so is the future of the pub. With lovely rural descriptions and a winter setting this book is just perfect for curling up on the sofa with.

So cute, I just love this series. Yes, all the books have the same 'formula', but they're full of community spirit and small-town quirks, and they're a lovely little escape. I've loved Belle as a character since she was introduced in book 1, so it was great for her to get her happy ending, and for the inn to get a well needed upgrade.

I really do rather like it in Cranbridge – the village shop that Josh and Amber made such a success of restoring, the village hub that Tom and Lucy created, the river running through the centre, the community that gather at the seating on the verandah. And that lovely community also gather at the village pub, The Black Swan – although it’s distinctly neglected, the welcome there’s not always the warmest one, the food leaves a lot to be desired, and the landlords are constantly at each others’ throats. And when they finally decide they’ve had enough, and the pub goes up for sale, everyone wonders what might happen next – especially Belle, as it’s been her home for a long time.

Josh’s brother Pete comes to the rescue – he fled the village after their father’s death, and never planned to stay permanently, but can see that the pub has real possibilities and has ideas about how it could be improved. There’s a bit of history between him and Belle, and a frisson of attraction – but their ideas about the pub’s future are rather different. It does look as if he’ll only do it up and then move on again – there’s a big secret that makes him less than comfortable to be back in Cranbridge.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Pete and Belle. She’s always been a little bit spiky, but we find out the reasons why – and there’s a touch of sadness about her as her future looks less than secure. Their exchanges as they clash over Pete’s plans to create a Michelin-starred restaurant spark and fizz – and we see things from Pete’s point of view too, as he wrestles with his feelings for her and works through his own discomfort over the secret he’s keeping. They go from friends to enemies, and then back to friends and something more – the outcome’s never really in any real doubt, but I did enjoy the journey. And I also really liked seeing the pub’s transformation – although it might not have been the best idea inviting a restaurant critic to opening night with a new and untested chef and a space that’s still rather less than customer-friendly. Thank goodness for Dodgy Del – and his extended family!

The friendships developed in the previous books were ever present – but don’t worry if this is your first visit to Cranbridge, you’ll feel at home very quickly. The author is an accomplished storyteller, the humour is gentle and well-handled, and so is the emotional content – and all the characters, however peripheral to the story, are really well drawn. And as well as all the problems around communication, there’s a really nice focus on loneliness and isolation and the kindness of others that warms the heart, along with the support of friends and the importance of family. And yes, the snow starts to fall and there’s a perfect touch of Christmas too.

It’s really was a lovely read – and I’ll be looking forward to another visit to Cranbridge in the not-too-distant future.

Not going to lie I was positively itching to get back to the village of Cranbridge and find out what the locals were getting up to. Book 1 and 2 focussed on the shop with Amber and Jake and then the newspaper office with Lucy and Tom. This time around it’s Belle and The Black Swan pub, affectionately known by the locals as The Mucky Duck.

With a poor reputation for an arguing landlord and lady, atrocious food and decor, the pub is failing badly and so Belle’s aunt and uncle put it up for sale and Belle is about to lose the only place that feels like home. On top of that romance seems to be in the air and after witnessing her parent’s and aunt and uncles tempestuous marriages she has sworn off marriage for life. Or has she? When old friend Pete returns to Cranbridge could he save the pub and mend Belle’s heart? Or will he flee like he did once before taking his secret with him?

I love these books and this was no exception, the characters all return and it feels like you are catching up with friends. I have a real kinship with Belle in that she is all bark and no bite, if only you take the time to see past the growl. Pete, at the start, I didn’t warm to and felt that he wasn’t good enough for our Belle. But as the pub is transformed so were my feelings towards him.

If you want a lovely cosy winter read with real community spirit and colourful characters then look no further.

I have been a fan of Alison’s work for a while now. I haven’t quite caught up with everything that she has written but I am getting there. I especially like the ‘The Riverside Lane Series’. ‘The Village Inn Of Secret Dreams’ is the third book in the series and it is another cracker. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Village Inn Of Secret Dreams’ but more about that in a bit.
It literally didn’t take me long to get into this story. As soon as I started to read, I felt as though I had been reunited with old friends in the residents of ‘Riverside Lane’. I especially liked the characters of Belle and of Pete. I had my own theories as to what fate had in store for them both and I had to keep reading to discover if I was on the right track or if I had wandered down the wrong path entirely. I found that reading ‘The Village Inn Of Secret Dreams’ became seriously addictive. I would pick the book up only intending to read a couple of chapters but I would become so wrapped up in the story that I would still be sat there reading over an hour and many chapters later. I just couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. All too quickly I reached the end of the story and I had to say farewell to the residents of Riverside Lane. ‘The Village Inn Of Secret Dreams’ was a delight to read and a very enjoyable story.
‘The Village Inn Of Secret Dreams’ is superbly written and you can say the same about all of Alison’s books. I love the way in which she grabs the reader’s attention and she reels the reader in from the start. I love Alison’s very easy going and warm writing style. In fact as soon as you start reading one of her books, you know that you are going to be among friends and that you can relax. Alison described Riverside Lane so vividly that it came alive and she made it sound so lovely that I was all set to pack a bag and go for a visit! I love the way in which Alison makes the reader feel as thought they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action. Reading this book felt like ‘a hug from a mug of hot chocolate’ in that the story left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Village Inn Of Secret Dreams’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Alison’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

A winter miracle will make two friends realise they are soulmates in Alison Sherlock’s delightful and magical new novel, The Village Inn of Secret Dreams.

For Belle Clarke, The Black Swan Inn in the beautiful village of Cranbridge is her favourite place in the whole world. The charming inn had provided her with the sanctuary she so desperately needed and she had hoped to stay at The Black Swan for the foreseeable future – until the beautiful inn is threatened with closure. A buyer must be found and quickly or the inn could be shut down forever. Belle is willing to do whatever it takes to save The Black Swan Inn – but could her good friend Peter’s plan to save it be the answer to all of her prayers? Or will his ideas for the inn end up causing even more problems and upheaval?

Pete has got some very radical plans for the renovation which do not fit with Belle’s ideas for The Black Swan. As the two begin to disagree about everything, they wonder whether they will ever manage to put all their differences aside for the good of the community. But when a storm hits, it looks like their diverging ideas will be the last thing on their minds as they find themselves forced with confronting the truth about how they really feel about one another…

Will Belle’s dreams about staying in Cranbridge ever come true? Will Pete’s past end up threatening his future with Belle? And can The Black Swan Inn ever be saved?

Enchanting, uplifting and wonderfully romantic, The Village Inn of Secret Dreams is a dreamy, adorable and emotional tale that charms from the off and keeps readers absolutely riveted to the page until the very last word. Alison Sherlock sprinkles her story with plenty of warmth, hope and heart and readers will fall in love with Belle and Pete and cheer them on on their way to their happy ending.

Fall under Alison Sherlock’s spell this winter with her latest novel, The Village Inn of Secret Dreams.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It was a real treat to return to Cranbridge and catch up with the residents. I have loved my previous visits and was hopeful for this latest trip. I’m delighted to say that I had an absolute blast. This gorgeous story has it all. Besides catching up with Josh, Amber, Tom and the rest of the gang, we learned a little more about some of the other residents.

From the first book, I was drawn to the somewhat enigmatic Belle. Named after a Disney Princess, she is the polar opposite, as far as her dress style goes. Her passion for black clothing and her distrust of love, make her the perfect protagonist for this story. Learning more about her background, and how she came to Cranbridge, her attitude is easy to understand.

A new character is Pete Kennedy, brother of Josh who we first met in book one, he’s handsome, successful and not in the market for any kind of relationship. He sees Belle as his little sister/best friend. Thankfully, they are agreed on this point and able to work together to restore the fortunes of The Black Swan.

This story is simply joyous; there are some wonderful characters in Cranbridge, Dodgy Del, Ned and Grandma Tilly, to name a few, bring some of the best storylines and help remind us of the value of community. Even Keith gets a mention!

I would love to live in a village like Cranbridge, I think it sounds quite charming and there is a real spirit of community. Something that is so often missing from our busy lives. I spent many years living in a mountain town in Colorado. I loved the feeling that comes from knowing most of the people and having support from all quarters. It wasn’t perfect, but it’s how I imagine this gorgeous village would feel.

BOOK REVIEW | The Village Inn of Secret Dreams by Alison Sherlock

SYNOPSIS | After escaping her parents’ unhappy marriage to sleepy Cranbridge a long time ago, Belle Clarke dreams of staying at The Black Swan Inn forever. But with the rundown Inn threatened with closure, Belle may be forced to leave, unless a buyer can be found … quickly.

So, when her oldest friend Pete Kennedy returns from working abroad with a plan to save the Inn, Belle should be overjoyed. The trouble is, Pete has some rather radical ideas for the renovation which Belle disagrees with.

But when a snow storm hits, Belle and Pete are forced to put aside their differences and work together to help the village. Can Belle realise her dreams to stay in Cranbridge and can Pete ever stop running from his past?

As they try to save The Black Swan Inn, secrets are revealed and just maybe they’ll finally find out how they really feel about each other.

MY THOUGHTS | I loved visiting the village of Cranbridge for the first time! I was unaware that The Village Inn of Secret Dreams was a series - it can be read as a stand-alone - but I am excited to read the rest of the Riverside Lane books. I enjoyed all of the characters and the sense of community, but Belle and Pete’s relationship was my favorite. I was hoping throughout the story that she would get the happy ending that she deserved. The Village Inn of Secret Dreams is a perfect, charming story to read leading up to the Christmas season! Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the digital ARC.

The Black Swan pub is under threat - can barmaid Belle save it? Certainly not alone, but help is at hand in the shape of, Peter, local boy made good. He’s newly-returned to the village, and has the leisure and the money to step in and save the Inn.
But will that solve Belle’s problems? For she now faces sharing her home with a man who once made it plain he didn’t return her feelings for him, and who has a completely different vision from hers for the future of The Black Swan.
This is a warm, sparkly romance, with the added bonus of a lovely community feel to the narrative – in the village of Cranbridge, the locals all look out for each other. As the seasons turn from summer to autumn to Christmas, we’re invited to step outside the Inn and share in community events, which all adds greatly to the atmosphere.
The various characters who habituate the inn and village add to to the story's charm – who could resist people like Grandma Tilly, “Dodgy” Dell, arrogant chef Andrei, and colourful auntie Angie? They’re the perfect foil for our two heroes, Belle and Pete, who are both attractive, empathetic characters in their own right. They’re funny, quick-witted and spark off each other beautifully. Occasionally their conflicted reactions to their growing attraction to each other seems a little contrived – can’t they just speak out to each other?
But overall the plot is convincing, and keeps us guessing to the end whether there will be a happy-ever-after for a heroine called Belle, who, despite her name, believes true love is only for fairytales.

The Village Inn of Secret Dreams by Alison Sherlock
Pub Date 30 September 2021
Brand NEW from the bestselling author of The Village Shop For Lonely Hearts.
After escaping her parents' unhappy marriage to sleepy Cranbridge a long time ago, Belle Clarke dreams of staying at The Black Swan Inn forever.
But with the rundown Inn threatened with closure, Belle may be forced to leave unless a buyer can be found … quickly.
So, when her oldest friend Pete Kennedy returns from working abroad with a plan to save the Inn, Belle should be overjoyed. The trouble is, Pete has some rather radical ideas for the renovation, which Belle disagrees with.
But when a snowstorm hits, Belle and Pete are forced to put aside their differences and work together to help the village.
Can Belle realise her dreams to stay in Cranbridge, and can Pete ever stop running from his past?
As they try to save The Black Swan Inn, secrets are revealed, and just maybe they'll finally find out how they really feel about each other.
The Village Inn of Secret Dreams is another passionate and emotional read from Alison Sherlock. It's been delightful being back in Cranbridge with its well-known faces, and I liked getting to know more about Belle this time. I enjoyed her relationships with the girls, even if she was still so reluctant to trust anyone. Although this story touches on complex matters such as grief, poverty, and loneliness, they are all handled sensitively.
A cosy, captivating story with fabulous characters, which I found enjoyable and entertaining.

In "The Village Inn of Secret Dreams" by Alison Sherlock, Belle and Pete's story unfolds with tender intricacy, each carrying scars from their past that make them hesitant to embrace love. Belle, disillusioned by a number of less then ideal marriages in her family history, and Pete, burdened by a haunting family secret, find solace and understanding in each other's company.

Their bond, cultivated since high school, evolves deeper as they navigate the challenges threatening Belle's home and livelihood. Pete's unwavering support becomes the cornerstone of their journey as they embark on a mission to revive the enchanting Black Swan Inn.

Sherlock's narrative is woven with the magic of fairy lights, infusing every page with a whimsical glow that mirrors the blossoming romance between Belle and Pete. As they work tirelessly to breathe new life into the inn, their love story unfolds like a carefully orchestrated dance, illuminated by the soft glow of twinkling lights.

"The Village Inn of Secret Dreams" is not just a tale of romance; it's a testament to the power of love's resilience and the transformative magic of following one's heart. With each turn of the page, readers will find themselves enchanted by the warmth and intimacy of Belle and Pete's journey, perhaps even inspired to adorn their own homes with the soft radiance of fairy lights, just as the author's prose effortlessly does.

🚨TW: parents abandonment, being lied to, snowstorm

Love Belle and Pete, such a sweet childhood friends to lovers trope. Pete used to treat her as his little sister and protected her however when he found out something about his father and also when his father passed away, and they kissed, he doesn't want to hurt any of them so he went off to Singapore to work. And then he lost his job after years of working there. He felt helpless and went back to his hometown and reunited with his family and Belle. Seeing that Belle is heartbroken that she is about to lose her home.

That's when he decided to purchase the inn so that she can still stay there, however he had different thoughts on how to make the inn more successful which clashes of what Belle preferred it to be. Both don't see eye to eye and bicker all the time, but though they bicker slowly their feelings for each other are back and also they work together to save the inn. She got to know the reason of why he went off and was there for him through his struggles and also encourage him to let his family know about it. He also gradually love his hometown and felt that he belongs there too.

And both helped the villagers during the snowstorm to give them food and also quilts that made by Belle and also Grandma Tilly. Can't spoil too much of the story you will have to read to find out.

You can purchase this in Kobo and it is available in Kobo Plus.

Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley, too,
For my copy of this book, here's my honest review:

Belle Clarke was sent to stay with her Uncle and Aunt
When her parents fell out and had their final rant
She's stayed there, growing up then working in The Black Swan Inn
But it is losing money and now her Uncle thinks they can't win.
That's why the Inn is going up for sale soon
And Belle feels like all will end in doom.

Pete Kennedy is Belle's oldest friend
But his travels abroad are about to end.
When he decides to buy the Inn and work with Belle
To make it a place where folks like to eat and dwell.
Can they work together to make it a success
Or will their differences make it something less?

This is a story of a village and the folks there
Who are there to help others when they need to share.
With a world cruise, a snowstorm and folks in need
Can Pete learn to stay and Belle's advice heed?
Can Belle learn she's to trust that she's enough?
Let's hope the road to romance isn't too rough!

This is the third book in 'The Riverside Lane' Series of books
Each of which is well worth taking a look
Although they're linked with characters and setting
You could enjoy them as a standalone, too, I'm betting.
However, I've now read and thoroughly enjoyed all three
And hope you'll get the chance to see if you agree with me!
