The Ugly Butterfly: An imaginative story about the life cycle of a caterpillar, a quest to fit in and the discovery of how differences make us one of a kind!
A terrible storm scours a teeny tiny egg from its snuggly resting spot, carrying it tumbling, tumbling, tumbling across the countryside. Dropped into a milkweed patch at the edge of the woods, the little caterpillar finally emerges and goes through metamorphosis amidst beautiful Monarch butterflies. It doesn’t take long for it to realize there are some very big differences and an even bigger question...
Why don’t I fit in???
The only answer for this ugly butterfly is leaving the milkweed patch on a quest to find where it belongs. The Ugly Butterfly uses key elementary science concepts to take a colorful look at similar life cycles, animal adaptions and how important differences are in a healthy ecosystem. Being YOU is a be-you-tiful thing!

Vocabulary rich book for science lovers
As an educator, this book check all the boxes! It has a story with a lovable character in a authentic setting. The plot has lots of action, a climax, and a resolution. Beyond story structure, this book is FULL of scientific vocabulary, presented in authentic yet explanatory ways. There are even seek and find questions about the scientific principles with guidance at the end. This book is perfect for any parent or classroom teacher! (Particularly if your child/students are learning about life cycles)

Beautiful illustrations and very educational!!
It is a beautiful story of a “butterfly” who did not fit in. The illustrations are so colorful and beautifully done! It has fantastic vocabulary words to prompt and educate young minds. And the search for various creatures component is a wonderful way to stimulate the younger reader! The ultimate lesson learned is we are all beautiful in our own way and each of us has a role to play. Bravo!!

Wow!
Wow! What a beautiful story of The Ugly Butterfly! This book not only teaches children that differences are beautiful but also encourages children to find a comfort zone where they feel confident and accepted. This book also teaches the life cycle of both a butterfly and moth, which is a plus! I love reading this because my children learn in more ways than one and that’s a beautiful thing! What a great addition to our library!

This book is engaging for children of all ages. It not only has science content, but it is an engaging story about a moth who doesn’t fit in. My grandchildren love the story and the beautiful illustrations. They enjoyed the scavenger hunt too. It is a wonderful book!

Excellent educational yet entertaining book!
This is an excellent book to teach kids the life cycle of a caterpillar and also (and maybe more importantly) demonstrate how we are each unique and special in our own way! Will highly recommend to any teacher or parent! Very well done Jessica and Carol!

Fantastic book!
This book is such a great story! It touches on many science standards such as life cycles, pollination, animal adaptations, and more. I love the scavenger hunt at the back of the book! I am a Media Specialist at an elementary school and can’t wait to read this book to all of my students!

what’s not to love?
What’s not to love about this book? Great illustrations. Great information folded perfectly into an entertaining tale. Best of all, a darling misfit who learns it’s often better than fine being who you are.

Cute book!
My little ones enjoyed this book. The story unfolded all while learning about caterpillars. They were surprised at the end and it taught them a kindness lesson.

Lovely and educational
