Whether you are new to Plutarch's Lives, or need some fresh inspiration, this accompaniment to The Plutarch Project offers teaching tips and other advice to get you started and help you go deeper. It also includes a complete six-lesson guide for Plutarch's Life of Eumenes.
I have used Anne White’s study guides for Plutarch for our studies for years. They have been essential for me. I doubt I would have tackled Plutarch, except in children’s versions of the Lives, if it wasn’t for Anne creating the guides.
The Practical Plutarch gives you the “nuts and bolts” of how Anne makes her study guides, so you could tackle it yourself, if so inclined. It also gives you a vision of how much work she puts into her study guides. It will be a great reference book and it has a bonus Life of Eumenes. Wonderful book!
This is an invaluable resource for getting your mind, heart and head around and into Plutarch. I read this with our co-op mamas and was so thankful to read this in community. I'm extremely thankful that Anne E. White made these resources. She makes is so nice for us to dip into this part of world history and understand the pros and cons of citizenship. It would truly all be Greek to me without it, and I'm so happy I can glean the wisdom in studying these lives. I am really looking forward to using these study guides, and going deeper into Plutarch's Lives with our boys next year.
An essential read for anyone planning to teach Plutarch. I was super glad to read it with friends, we helped each other through it (at 100 pages it doesn’t look that intimidating but it was dense.)
I loved this introduction into the world of Plutarch! Anne White does a fabulous job of inviting intimidated moms and students to the table to listen in on the conversations of those unfamiliar-to-us persons who lived full lives before us. I especially enjoyed learning about Eumenes and can truly say I am excited to tackle Plutarch with my son in years to come!
Honestly, we struggled with Plutarch when we first started in our homeschool. As we continued with each new life, they got easier to the point that we now enjoy them and are a highlight during the week.
I'm preparing to teach Plutarch in the fall, and this book was useful in helping prepare for teaching. I loved how Anne White walked through how she developed her Plutarch guides, how different translations compare, motivations for teaching Plutarch, and the wonderful Life of Eumenes in the Apprndix. Her overview of Charlotte Mason's and the PNEU's use of Plutarch was inciteful as well.
Extremely helpful as a model of one way of approaching Plutarch. There were several helpful suggestions, including ways to break up each life, kinds of questions to ask, meaningful activities, and variations on narration. Ms. White devotes much space (and time) to helping with foreign vocabulary, much of which would not be needed if using an accessible translation.
Super interesting. I'm dabbling with the idea of including Plutarch's Lives with my children in the future. I had never heard of him until recently and wanted an introduction. I will definitely come back to this in a couple of years.
Ann White’s guides are so helpful. Takes what before would have been near impossible and makes these ‘Lives’ accessible. I love seeing the character of these men of ancient times.
