I almost never reread anything, but every time a new volume of this series comes out I reread the previous one because I just love everything about it so much.

Aoi Tsubaki inherited her grandfather’s ability to see spirits—and his massive debt to them! Now she’s been kidnapped and taken to Kakuriyo, the spirit world, to make good on his bill. Her options: marry the head of the inn her grandfather trashed, or get eaten by ayakashi. But Aoi isn’t the type to let spirits push her around, and she’s determined to redeem her grandfather’s IOU on her own terms! If she can just get someone to see past her family background, Aoi is certain she can prove her worth...

Isn’t the cover so pretty? The art style isn’t my favorite but it’s really grown on me. I especially love how the food and cooking is portrayed. And the entire cast of characters have stellar designs.

Aoi’s meal for her VIP guests hits a snag when she’s kidnapped! And what a trial it is. The odanna himself has to take action. Which, of course, I loved! It made for a fun and politically risky situation. Unfortunately not all is as it seems. The plot thickens and it’s going to make for a threatening next volume!

Of course, the meals and food look delish and it’s entertaining to watch Aoi think on her feet and get everything prepared. I really adore this easy slice of life food manga with a touch of the supernatural and political intrigue.

This will always be my favorite part in this series (anime or manga alike). It's here that Odanna's starting to show he really cares for Aoi, and that she's also starting to recognize his actions. *wiggle* 😍 ... and Ginji's getting into my nerves.🤨

Now I have to wait for the rest of the series to come out (boo). Too bad I can't understand Japanese, or I will opt for the light novel series instead.

My favorite so far! We have our hot ogre saving his bride ugh so romantic. I'm really getting into this now that we're leaning away from focusing so much on recipes and the story is progressing. Left off on a cliffhanger and I wanna read the next one so bad but gotta go to bed ugh the life of a bookworm 😭

"Is Aoi a caged bird? I do not wish to restrict her freedom."

Wonderful volume that surprisingly had a lot of high stakes!

Not only is there a very important dinner on the line that could change the course for Aoi's restaurant, but Aoi's very life is on the line, which is SCARY!

But rewinding, I really really loved seeing Aoi and Ginji shop together! The way her face lights up when it comes to food is always so rewarding as a reader, even though I got super hungry when reading! LOL! She and Ginji are one of my favorite duos and thankfully we get to see them have fun, but how scary when something happens!

I'm truly relieved Aoi was okay because this series has been fairly chill and was not prepared to zip through this volume because of the intensity! Not only that, but I'm pretty sure we just found out who it was that helped Aoi when she was a child! :o :o :o

I was surprised to learn who was behind what happened to Aoi and how she reacted! She is truly a strong person and I think this volume really clarified that with how hard she pushed herself to make sure that she kept her word.

Also, I LOVED the opening quote I shared because can we take a moment to appreciate how amazing Ōdanna is? What a line! Ginji is easily my favorite character, but I really love his character too!

Now with the ending, I'm wondering how a certain character is and if we've met them yet or not! Can't wait to read the next volume!

Links to my reviews for each available volume as follows:
Volume 1: 4 best nine-tailed fox character stars
Volume 2: 4 Beauty and the Beast but make it Spirited Away stars
Volume 3: 4 how can spiders be this endearing? stars
Volume 4: 4 foodie stars
Volume 5: 5 just who is Aoi's grandpa, Shiro? stars
Volume 6: 4 pretty art stars
Volume 7: 5 I need more of Kakuriyo stars

One other joy apart from seeing a series progress well, is watching the art develop alongside it.
It reminds me of Spirited Away so much, and is making me want to buy the physical books.

Warnings: child neglect, starvation, abduction

Okay, I checked and I had read the last volume (#5) a year ago, and oh my, I have missed this cast, especially Ginji! Yes, this particular part of the story is already in the anime, but I love the manga a lot, too, for its pretty art style, and all the deliciousness! In this book, Aoi goes to the Eastern Lands for the imported foods market (which mainly means food from Utsushiyo) and she is abducted by a stranger and then left in a storeroom. While she is saved thanks to the pendant from Odanna by which he finds her, she has lost valuable time which she needed for the food prep for the royal's anniversary dinner, not to mention being confined in a watery storehouse has sapped her strength.

Our heroine, however, has the savvy to cook up a menu of simpler dishes, which evoke nostalgia of Utsushiyo in the royals' heart. Most of the storyline in this book is about her cooking up and serving the dinner, and the royal's reaction to it, but to the fair, it itself is so interesting - I loved the way she made changes to the dishes to reflect her dual experiences and ingredients, and created a hearty dinner in what was basically crunch time. I keep wishing the artwork was in color, if at least for the food parts, because even in black and white they look gorgeous and in color they would be stunning. Other than that, a couple of new characters show up who will become important soon; I can't wait for the Southern Lands arc!

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.

The mystery behind the person with the mask persists! I have three ideas of who it could be now. Since the Odanna thinks it will mess with his marriage though might mean it wasn't him.

Lots of drama in this one when Aoi gets kidnapped. I was right that a certain someone was acting sinister but who is behind her kidnapping? Shiro must have really made an enemy. I wonder if Aoi's powers will extend anywhere else like will she get super strong? But this is a food-based manga so unlikely. I don't really care for the food descriptions actually although some of the food would be interesting to make. I think baked goods descriptions are more my speed.

Clearly, the Odanna cares for Aoi. He might have known and cared about her for a long time. Same with Ginji. I found it unbelievable that Aoi was able to cook after all had happened to her but it was sweet to see everyone care about her. I'm really curious to see the mystery behind the mask, where the romance will take us, and who is trying to kill Aoi. I do worry about how slow the manga volumes are coming out. I'm flying through them and I'll have to wait a year for each one to come out!

I enjoyed the anniversary dinner, that was sweet. Also, who is the blond luck demon? Duh duh DUH!!! Not fond of all of the secrets they are keeping from Aoi, but I guess that’s what demons do? 4, picked up a tad, stars.

Spoilers ahead for the first five.

Aoi had a dream that flashes back to her past. But when she wakes, there is no time to spare. Off to the market to buy ingredients before she cooks the special meal for a royal couple. Rivals from the inn and a mysterious figure who did not act like this before complicate that, greatly.

Aoi still plows on.

Aoi and Genji go to another city to shop for the meal Aoi's making for the royal couple's anniversary. But while there Aoi is lured away from Genji and kidnapped. The Ōdanna misses an important meeting to rescue Aoi, and then he gets to the bottom of who was behind Aoi's kidnapping. Aoi recovers just in time to make a no frills homestyle meal for the royal couple, which she really hopes will be enough.

I really like Aoi's response that is very merciful to some of the characters involved in her kidnapping. Mercy isn't something people in this fantasy world are used to, and it makes a big impact (also, it is a very different response than her grandfather would've had and that makes an impression too). There's a little more touch of Beauty and the Beast in Aoi's rescue. The result of Aoi's meal for the royal couple is very believable and a satisfying conclusion to this book. Now the wait for #7 to be translated into English. I have some very impatient readers who want it NOW. I like this series more and more the farther I get into it. Those who like fairytale rewrites, Japanese mythology, and food stories should enjoy this.

Notes on content: Maybe 1-3 minor swears, though I don't really remember any. No sexual content. Aoi's in a potentially dangerous situation but is rescued before she is seriously hurt.

This was such a great volume! It had thrills, suspense, romance, and Aoi being the badass woman she is! That dinner scene was so fucking sweet and heartwarming, it straight up brought tears to my eyes. This is the kind of romance I want to see, and I can only hope and pray that Aoi's and the Odanna's relationship turns out like this.

I am SO FUCKING CURIOUS about this Noh mask ayakashi, when are they going to reveal more about it?! Seriously, you can't introduce this shit to me in the first volume and only give me scraps of info through flashbacks every volume! I want to know mooooooore!

That's all I want to say for now. This was a great volume and this is cementing itself as my favorite isekai/slice of life series. It's wholesome, fun, and filled with food, what more could I ask for?

So nice to finally have a new volume of this series! The way that Aoi handles the particular problem in this volume is a little reckless, but I can appreciate her tenacity! Looking forward to the next volume.

If there’s one thing I think I would learn as a human stuck in another world in debt to a man she is being forced to marry, wandering off where anyone could kidnap or kill me would probably be at least in the top five things to not do.

The same cannot be said for Aoi, our main character and human with wonderful cooking skills. We begin this volume with her being kidnapped, again, because she is compelled to run off. She is thankfully saved by the Odanna, her betrothed, and gets home just in time to try and create a beautiful meal for the royal couple. They are incredibly influential, so it’s important for her to make a good impression, but considering she was just kidnapped, nearly drowned, and is still held captive, can she cook the whole meal in time?!

Aoi is not a normal human so of course she can. This volume is basically filler, just adding more lore to the ever-evolving mystery of just who wants Aoi out of the picture and who wants the Odanna taken down. There’s a continuing number of seeds being planted for her demise as Aoi impresses influential people around her, likely ending up with some sort of mass showdown between good and evil in a future volume. I love this series, so I am all about it. A good little funky fantasy series and a world I wish I could step into.

Aoi's tough spot is resolved; a scheme is uncovered; and the anniversary dinner for the Royal Couple happens.. though not as planned.

Aoi is making an impact on Kakuriyo, which is getting her more attention, both wanted and unwanted, but she's also getting more pieces to the mysteries in her past. What I found most intriguing about this volume, is we get to see what's going on elsewhere. What I mean by that is in the anime this section is all from Aoi's point of view. You don't know about the conversation that happened between the Odanna, Byukuya and Ranmaru at the Hachiyo meeting and a lot of Genji and the Odanna's dialogue while Aoi's unconscious, and both those have foreshadowing for twists in the plot and hints at Aoi's mystery, so were quite interesting! Also, I love Aoi's interaction with the Royal Couple, now and in the future, as they help her see a way forward for her life in Kakuriyo.

Content notes: No language or sensuality issues; the violence is severe, life-threatening peril from circumstances and thoughtlessness.

So Aoi is planning a spectacular Earth dinner for a royal couple's anniversary (because the wife is human) but the shopping trip goes south... BECAUSE AOI KEEPS RUNNING OFF! They've told her MULTIPLE TIMES that the spirit world is dangerous for a human. Tenjin-ya is only safe because the Ōdanna protects her (since she's supposed to be his bride).

But she still runs off without a second though, gets captured, and nearly drowns. (Seriously, there are better ways of splitting the party). The only reason she lives is because the Ōdanna protects her...AGAIN. I get that she's a fish out of water here in the spirit world, but she should be smarter than that! Cause right now, she's a spunky waifu who cooks good food and gets into trouble.

However, I do appreciate how she stepped up with the Daruma boys. Yes, she's pissed at them, but she understood their reasons and managed to look past it. Now, I'm curious about that Fortune Spirit.

Still looking for clues to the ayakashi who saved her when she was young, Aoi shuts down Yugao for a few days and goes to special market to collect ingredients for the Imperial dinner with Ginji. She is kidnapped and the Odanna is forced to leave a meeting of the territory lords to rescue her. Despite being sick with a fever, Aoi revamps her menu to complete the requested meal for Lord Nuino-in and his human wife Lady Ritsuko.

This volume has a dedicated arc which is really nice as a change of pace. It also did not repeat the overall premise or reintroduce every character trusting its audience. It also kind of marks a change where the Odanna and Aoi have stopped avoiding each other entirely. They still don’t communicate openly but romance and emotional appeals were impossible when they weren’t willing to share the same spaces without schemes. The shoujo intentions are also reflected by the visiting royal couple.

I rate this 4.5 stars.
I remember watching season 1 of the anime a few years ago (I don’t remember when) and enjoying it, which made me want to read the manga, but I don't remember what year that was and a lot of what happened.

Slowly, Aoi is gaining respect from the ayakashi, whether it's from her cooking, her kindness, her personality, or all of them, I love it! This is how you write a female character who is liked by a lot of the characters without her being a Mary Sue, Hollywood and American novels (there are so many great anime, manga and light novel characters that Hollywood should be taking notes from if they ever want to make a likeable actual strong independent female character, not whatever crap they've been doing recently).

Aoi has been asked to cater an anniversary dinner for a royal couple, and she’s overjoyed at what this will mean for her restaurant. She and Ginji head to the Eastern Lands to do some grocery shopping at a fancy imported food market. But before she can find the perfect ingredient, Aoi is abducted!

The story takes place in a short span of time (a few days), so there is less plot development than in the previous volumes. Aoi's cooking is highlighted as word of her cooking skills spreads. She and the Oodanna are becoming closer in each volume.

The plot thickens as Aoi is abducted but rescued in time to make the anniversary dinner.

It's pretty apparent that Ginji was the spirit that kept Aoi fed when she was locked up as a little girl. The Odanna is somehow in on it and worries that Aoi knowing will lead her to have feelings for Ginji instead of himself.

Ginji suspects are particular spirit of helping mastermind the abduction of Aoi but we as readers are left hanging...

The story picked up speed once Aoi was in danger and was a quick read. Finally, some plot and danger!!! While this is a cozy read, I've been waiting for things to throw the Ogre and Aoi together and nothing beats her life being endangered. It was really sweet to see the human/demon royal couple eating their meal and reminiscing about when they first started dating and had to sneak away on their dates. Was quite cute.

I feel like this was a turning point in the series and I hope it only speeds up from here with the Odanna and Aoi. Love Peewee.

2.5*. Might be done with the series now. The plot is meandering and losing my interest, the food elements are still beautifully drawn but feel kind of tacked onto the story now, and Aoi's characterization is inconsistent. I miss the Aoi we met to open the series--a lot of her actions lately make no sense.

Gosh, I love the cover art on this one!
Pages numbers have decreased yet again. So disheartening. We went from a 200+ page volume to like 145 pages tops.

Lots of excitement and drama in this volume! Again, I really, really love the pacing of this story. It seems to know exactly when to amp things up, and then it does.
