Animal #1

Animal

Insanity, in its rarest form, is the consumption of our soul.
Something evil makes its home in the dark foothills of Missouri. What you might expect is far from reality.

An ambitious reporter trying to catch her big break, finds herself broken down and lost in the very woods where darkness dwells.

I'm not saying this has the makings of a horror story... but ...

Animal is a story of a mother who is willing to go past the line to protect her child. To protect their way of life. But When strangers start showing up, the Animal must be released.

This was such a nasty story from start to finish. It covers all of the main themes that are aimed to sicken the reader, ie rape, child abuse, and torture. None of it was too extreme, but it’s all in there. But if you can look past all that unpleasantness, you’ll see a really great piece of horror literature. I kept having flashbacks of Lisa Trevor from the 2001 Resident Evil remake, while I read Animal’s inner thoughts. There were several times that I felt his inner dialogue was a bit too sophisticated for his particular situation, but at the same time, added the necessary depth. So this book is written in mini-sections, all from the first person view of each character, which I don’t enjoy normally, but Emery LeeAnn made it work. Thinking back to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, written exclusively in journal entries from each person, it literally took me over a decade to read for that reason. I just couldn’t stay with the format and struggled a great deal, but again, I thoroughly liked this story’s set up. The pace was good, the elements of the book were allowed to simmer, and the ending was what the reader needed. Now on the conclusion, I understand the simplistic finale, as there is a sequel coming out next month, which I will be purchasing as well. Again, open endings are something else I don’t like most times, but this was satisfactory. For any horror fan out there with a free hour to spare, check this one out.

2 ⭐ (I think)

I'm strugging to review this one as well because it wasn't a bad book but I don't know how I feel either.

I went into this one just really knowing it was Wrong Turn meets The Hills have Eyes and I definitely can understand that but I think if maybe the book was longer it would've been more enjoyable.

I found it very rushed and a lot happening all at once.

it's very dark and disturbing

TW - Rape, abuse, torture, murder, cannibalism (I think there's more but I can't remember)

Due to certain circumstances, Momma and Animal live isolated in the woods and share a unique bond. Though Momma takes measures to protect their existence, she is aware of how quickly it can change.

“Pain is all I know, and pain is all she provides me.”

Narrated in multiple POV, this book is not for the faint hearted. With extreme situations, these characters are damaged beyond repair. Interestingly, rather than siding with only one character, there are times when I sympathized with both Momma and Animal. There were other chraacters that felt a bit extraneous and unnecessary to achieve the end goal. However, the ending was appropriate for the characters and story.

Loved this wild book so much!

This was without a doubt my favorite book by this author! It kept me up at night, had my thoughts going haywire, and even had me thanking the author in my head for writing this book! The absolute agony that Animal was feeling throughout the book gutted me. It almost made ME feral. The way the 'Watcher' AKA mother had it in her mind that she was helping him was just crazy but believable because in her mind she thought she was helping him. I loved that there were so many POV's in this book also. So you got to see all the different sides of the story. Chloe was another big part of the story. She was just an innocent bystander wandering through town and ended up in the wrong place in the wrong time. But ended up being a crucial part of the story. I just loved every single second of this story. The darkness. The demented side. The sickness. The sorrow. The revenge. I am SO happy I read this and SO happy I have the paperback too! 5 stars!!!

This is probably the wildest book I’ve read to date and I’m not hating on it
It was crazy but I’m here for it
Very dark extreme horror
Dysfunctional family is putting it mildly, traumatizing childhood doesn’t even come close
Momma is taking care of her animal the only way she knows how, with pain
But when an unsuspecting reporter and her assistant stumble into the mountains for a story about the mountain people everything changes
It is a short 80 page read and leaves you wanting to know more…..Hope the follow up books answer some questions
If this is your genre EXTREME HORROR then run immediately to get

i think this book would benefit from some trigger warnings in the beginning. i know in the description it says reader discretion advised, but it really took a turn i wasn’t expecting. other than that it was a quick, super dark, twisted read that i enjoyed as much as you can enjoy something like this.

It was ok. I mean don’t get me wrong this is definitely fucked up. Super fast read with a lot packed into a few pages but some how it worked. I think my only issue was the fact that her best friend died. I really wanted him to make it. Definitely will be reading book 2

Check triggers.

I couldn't look away.
WTF did I just read. This will now hold the spot for most messed up thing I have read. The amount of trigger warnings that you would need to list would be longer than the book itself. Caution if you plan to read, but I will be thinking of this one for a while.

Oh wow!!

I’m still reeling from what I just read! First off, I absolutely love this author! There is no one to compare to her greatness for telling a story so well. Secondly, this one is a quick horror. If you like them gory, this one is for you!!!

Genre: Horror
Type: Standalone novella book 1 from Animal series
POV: First Person - Multiple
Rating:

A mother’s love knew no bounds. Living deep in the hills, a woman and her son survived off the land, bound to their home and way of life. She would stop at nothing to protect it.

This book had so much potential, but it tried to do too much in too few pages. I loved the dynamics between Momma, Animal and Chloe. It would be good to have more depth on that instead of just bits and pieces of them and other side characters. In terms of horror, the story delivered with some stomach-churning scenes.

He will not make my son feel like a freak. I pick up a large rock, lift it above my head, and smack him hard on the back of the skull with it.

Animal is a story of isolation and adapting. It would appeal to readers who enjoy short visceral horror.

wow. just wow.

make sure you read the trigger warnings on this one, as there are some detailed scenes that will be difficult to swallow for most. keep in mind, this is a horror book.

I absolutely loved this book. I loved how it was in multiple POVS and the povs were short. It made it easy to get through this book fairly quickly once i was able to focus time on it.

I've already started book 2, and can't wait to see how this series ends.

i wish this book would have focused on animal and his mother, and left it there. their dynamic was not too well developed, but it was horrific, and animal's mask in particular will haunt me.

the introduction of other characters makes sense for the plot, i guess, but it took away from what made the book interesting. the reporters in particular should have been taken out. they were extremely cringeworthy and added nothing . there could have been a way to serve their purpose without making them so pathetic.

the neighbors were AWFUL, but at least fit inside a horror novel. the inclusion of these extra characters also allowed for endlessin gratuitous detail, especially compared to how little detail we received for everything else.

idk, there was a cool idea here, but it got lost.

TW that should have been noted at any point in the beginning of the book, but were not: incest, rape, child abuse and neglect, genitalia mutilation, murder. I don’t have any triggers but this book contains some graphic scenes that may be triggering for others! Overall the story lacked a plot line and while I appreciate when a story is being told by multiple characters, it got to be a lot when there were six different POVs and not a lot of character building. I’m also not 100% sure what happened in the ending.

A dark, demented story...

I enjoyed this one a lot. Told in multiple perspectives, you can't help but find all the characters likable. Even as you come to distrust one of them, it's not an active kind of hatred you can feel. Sometimes what we think is best isn't.
This is my first book by Emery LeAnn. I'll definitely be looking at other titles.

Okay. Holy shit. This was fucking feral and disturbing.
Triggers: child abuse (in the most extreme sense), mutilation, brutalizing rape, beastiality, torture, cannibalism… I’ll add more if I remember.

I definitely want to know what happens next, but not sure if I can read the second book right now.

Good grief…

Epitome of messed up!!! This book is so, absolutely disturbed I still don’t even fully comprehend what I just read.

I feel so sorry for this boy. I can’t even imagine that happening to a human being. Let alone doing it to your own child.

This book has left me utterly gobsmacked.

READ YOUR TRIGGERS before you attempt to read this.

Deliciously Twisted

Having found this author through the Inferno series, I knew this would be dark, dirty, depraved, and I wasn't disappointed! Short and not so sweet, I was left wanting more, even in the face of such depravity.

Too rushed

I need more! This had the potential to be a 5 star book, but I feel there are too many questions left unanswered? I need more on the mom, why she did what she did. More on animal, and his feelings. The other dad and son? The reporter? Just too rushed

Wow!

Mountain folk, Dad and brother raping the sister. Mom pretending it was not happening. Then, Mom leaves. Daughter gives birth, to an inbred. Sis gets her revenge, on rapists. Turns son into something, not human.

Interesting

Not quite sure what to say about this book. I’m new to the Splatter Punk genre. This was a very quick disturbing read, but I guess that’s the point. Had a very Hills have eyes meets Wrong Turn kind of feel.

Good lord, check your trigger warnings.

I've gotten into the practice of going into books blind lately. The cover caught my attention, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I loved the story elements, and it was perfectly fast-paced. I do wish I had given myself some forethought.

I love the format of this read! Seeing the different POVs kept me hooked! It didn’t feel rushed with it being so short like most shorter stories tend to do. There were things I didn’t expect and it kept me unable to put it down! My heart just went out to Animal during the whole story!

Was okay, a little unfamiliar territory as it was written from several different POV's simultaneously.

Too short to really build and I don't know if other reviewers are over sensitive or just playing nice but nowhere near as nasty as I was expecting.
