Not finding the characters believable, Bailey is just outright annoying, Hannah is naieve, and Owen, really a giant bag of cash that no one is looking for?
I loved the voice in this book. It's a twisty journey about a strange little family, and I quite enjoyed it. I found the relationship between the main character and her stepdaughter to be realistically portrayed.
This book was an excellently written thriller. Don't look for deep, profound thoughts, just an interesting story. There are, of course, some of the usual tropes, like the snide 16 year old who says and does stupid things while not appreciating the efforts that people are making to keep her safe. There is also the in-the-shadows specter of organized crime that is always a threat, and the overcommitted federal law enforcement officer who wants to make good on his promise to keep a prior informant safe. In some respects, the book is in the style of "Gone Girl" or other books where the main character is on the run.
This book's premise could have led to a lot of clichés. But it did not - Hannah was a pretty focused character in seeing that her job was to keep Bailey safe. It was believable how they figured out who Owen was for the most part. I did like how she thought through who she was and who Bailey was and keeping that intact was important. My two things - Would Nicholas' people still be chasing after Ethan 10 years later - really??? Plus Owen must have known what was going on at his company - maybe he thought he could pull it off but he was the one person who knew for sure when the IPO went through that it should have been delayed but I guess he felt he could not leave either
I have to admit this is my first mystery novel and I was unsure if I would keep me interested. Needless to say the story had me vested in just a few pages in. I have read some of the reviews how the plot was predictable or how the characters were not realistic, to this I say " I read it and enjoyed it all" and as to the reviews regarding the fictional characters, well that is the point! When we read fictional novels we do so to be transported into the story, and "the Last thing he said" did so from begging to the end.
Love love loved this book ! I could not put it down.
After you fall in love with someone, you think you know them completely right ? Well that’s not always the case. Owen and Hannah don’t have the perfect relation as she thought. After Owen goes missing Hannah discovers he has a totally different life. Hannah and her step daughter race around the States trying to retrace history and find Owen. A true mystery must read.
I listened to the Simeon and Shuster audio version of this book. The narrator did a great job giving voice to the main character. It didn't take much imagination to see where the narrative was going when the husband/father disappeared. It wasn't a completely "happily-ever-after" ending, but the resolution still seemed contrived, not likely in the real world. Nevertheless, it was an entertaining read.
This was a good lazy day read. When a company is raided by FBI for fraud, one of its top employees disappears leaving his wife and teen daughter a backpack filled with $600,00 and a note to care for each other. Not trusting the authorities, the woman and her step daughter conduct their own investigation and uncover astounding secrets he was hiding. If you are willing to suspend skepticism, this can be a fun ride.
This book had some twisties and turnies that almost blew me away. Luckily, I was wearing my cement shoes as a preventative measure. Otherwise, I would have been gone in the wind.
This is an intricately plotted mystery centered around the love of a father for his daughter and the lengths to which he goes to protect her. Spot-on dialogue with excellent reasoned arguments/ decision-making by the protagonist, Hannah Hall, drive the action toward a scary climax and a provocative conclusion. A Great read!
3.5 stars. While not the absolute best prose I've read this year, this is a thriller that will keep you turning the pages to follow a series of unexpected events. Loved how the author puts you into the head of the wife who's husband has disappeared leaving a not to 'take care of her,' the step-daughter. For the thriller genre, as good as I've read in a while.
I actually listened to the book but boy was I invested. The story kept me intrigued the whole time, truly invested in the relationship of stepmother and stepdaughter, their heartbreak and confusion.
I listened while working and every time I could! And the ended truly touched my heart.
An enjoyable mystery with an interesting back story, good dialogue, some surprises, and a strong heroine faced with an extremely difficult task of keeping her teenaged stepdaughter safe from what or whom? She doesn't know. Hannah also doesn't know she has the inner strength or intelligence to pull this off, but accomplishes it as her solid character traits are revealed.
I really enjoyed this. Itt's a well written and engaging story. I called what happened to the characters. The teenager could be a little less one dimensional, but to be honest teenagers are kind of like that so it's forgivable.
I enjoyed that it doesn't follow a typical path, but funds it's own way to resolution.
3.5 stars. It starts off with a missing husband and then goes into all kinds of directions. I don't know how they didn't figure out that Owen was in witness protection...I had that figured out early on. The hunt for his identity and where he could be hiding was interesting and I enjoyed the story.
I love a good psychological thriller and this one delivered. I found it lying on a shelf at work and picked it up on my break. I was so engrossed I read through it in 3 days. Excellent story that I was not able to guess the ending of.
Enjoyable read. I liked the main character Hannah and admired her commitment to her bratty step-daughter. Slow start and then the pace really picks up. The story seemed to wish for a sequel. What really happens to Owen? Hannah? Owens former in-laws?
This book pulls you in and keeps you moving toward the conclusion. That's the good part. On the other hand, it is unbelievable, the characters make scary, stupid decisions, and has a terrible ending.
Engrossing thriller! Hannah's husband Owen disappears and leaves her with a last note "protect her." He means his daughter Bailey, but Hannah doesn't know what this means. Searching for Owen leads them to Texas and some strange events, but a really enjoying read.
A stepmother and her new stepdaughter have more in common than they release. I enjoyed this book with the twists and turns and a feeling of hope when you read this book. It's not the most suspenseful book that I've read which is why I'm giving it three stars but it is a good read for the summer.
I really enjoyed this. It was fascinating watching the story unfold, motivations so different than I think mine would be, but I could understand. I could see why she chose what she chose. It was a great read.
I really enjoyed the book, it’s got a great pace and keeps you interested until the very end. What this book is not is an intellectual, beautiful, symbolic book you get to analyze but for something fun and entertaining it certainly checks the right boxes for me.
So many plotholes and characters making choices that just don't make sense. But this was a fun read, an absorbing book that I read by the pool but then stayed up late to finish. It's got a strong voice. A solid three.
An interesting story that was a bit hard to believe with unexpected plot twists . The characters were a bit hard to identify with and thus the 4.0 rating.
