The Red Hood story was the only one keeping this from being rated two stars. I may just read the Red Hood chapters only going forward.

Red Hood & Batman in "Cheer" Part 5 (of 6):

"I wasn't smart enough. I wasn't Bruce. I wasn't Dick. [...] I was about to lose the only person to ever believe in me.. because I wasn't good enough."

This is a very interesting quote since last issue he was saying how Bruce didn't trust him and vice versa, how neither of them lived up to the idea of the dynamic duo because there was no trust. But that was on their last adventure together, however, this flashback is from earlier days, back when Jason felt insufficient, incapable of living up to the Robin mantle.

I love exploring Jason's insecurities. We are talking about a kid whose dad was a criminal and out of the picture; his mom was an addict who couldn't protect him, neglected him and put him in danger (inviting her supplier over); and his actual biological mom (Sheila) betrayed him to the Joker resulting in his untimely death. It is only natural that he is anxious about Bruce, he's already been rejected thrice by the people who were supposed to be his caregivers. He knows (or at least, his poor traumatized brain thinks) it's only a matter of time his new dad leaves him because there's something wrong with him, he is not worthy of love and care.

"He believed in me. That I could be as fast, as strong, as smart as the best of them.

And I still can."

But Bruce's approval, Bruce's trust in him and his capabilities validate him. Bruce's loves gives Jason the strength to be the hero he has always been. Knowing Bruce never doubted him gives Jason the perseverance to save his dad just like he did before.

Batgirls in "Wildcard":
It will never sit well with me how Babs is both Oracle and Batgirl at the same time. This story was pretty bare bones. So that's it? No follow-up on that villain? Ok, I guess.

Tim Drake in "Sum of Our Parts" Part 2 (of 3):

"I'm always Robin. Ever since Batman gave me the cowl, I... that's who I see myself to be. That's who I've been for all the important moments of my life. [...] Who am I if I'm not a Robin?"

Bonus: Steph cameo!! She's so beautiful I love her <3

Red Hood - 4.25 ⭐- I'm not crying you're crying.
Batgirls - 3.5⭐ - Story was alright, but Steph and Cass's banter was so good! Might have to read more from this author--would be down for a Batgirls book from her. Also, the art was super pretty + cute.
Tim Drake - 3.5 ⭐ lmao twitter spoiled it for me so I know where this is going. But, big Yes™
Grifter - 5⭐ god dAMN I've enjoyed this run. The twists and turns were already great, but Grifter's interactions with other dc characters is the cherry on top.

Cheer (5 of 6): Urban Legends always knows how to open strong.

Wildcard: Great art, but awful characterization and juvenile writing for Cass & Steph ruin the story.

Sum of Our Parts (2 of 3): Even better than part 1. It's great to get a deep dive into Tim's psyche and the art & panelling are fantastic.

The Long Con (5 of 5): Lousy ending to an otherwise solid arc. I do not want the Wildcats to return.

---

One of these days Urban Legends is going to put out a volume that isn't half bunk.

Batman/Red Hood and Tim Drake stories continue to be great character studies. Grifter arc was fun but I'm definitely confused by the ending. I usually appreciate a good Spoiler and Orphan appearance but not sure what to make of this one. I'll likely be dropping off this title after Zdarsky's run concludes next issue.
