Upgrading himself might be more dangerous and more painful than Adrian ever imagined, but some risk and agony is not about to stop him.

Adrian survived the first three weeks, and by sheer luck he saved Wagga Wagga by killing the Bird. Now he needs to get back to his family, but his non-sapient interface somehow has its own ideas. That is something he must deal with because Adrian refuses to be a puppet and there too much overt manipulation going on for his comfort.
Then, to complicate things, a new monster is threatening Wagga. He wants to get up and leave; it is not his problem but there is a lure of power from the salamander lizards and people he knows are being killed, so it is not that easy to just walk away. Delay after delay is stopping him from starting his journey and the pressure is building.
The monsters are getting smarter and the threat level on the road to Melbourne seems to keep increasing as he learns more and as he explores the reasoning behind the system that has been introduced the horror of the Alpha event becomes apparent.
The system did not lie when it talked about this being an extinction level event and while nothing would stop him from trying to reach his family, the difficulty of the journey is real and there would be things out there that were worse than the Bird.
He is going anyway.
Join Adrian as he helps Wagga and himself one last time and then sets out to discover how the towns between him and Melbourne have fared with the apocalypse.

Alex first fell in love with both computer games and writing when he was on a scholarship completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics. After graduating and getting a job, I put the whole being a novelist to the side while that pesky thing called life got in the way.
A career in banking project managing the delivery of complicated quantitative applications resulted. Very stereotypical;
• Boring job as a banker - tick,
• Suburban home - tick
• Three kids - tick
• Two dogs - tick
• You get the point.
A little thing called a global pandemic then came along and gave Alex a chance to return to his dream of becoming a writer. Having recently read a variety of LITRPG books, it was a genre that he was excited to explore in order to create a world that readers could immerse themselves into. With the familiarity of the gaming world gained from playing WOW, Skyrim, Fallout amongst others, there is simple joy in creating an imaginative magic filled world that is at everyone’s fingertips. In his writing, Alex aims to capture the feeling that he loves of being able to put yourself into a gaming world, develop your character and exploit the rules to the fullest.

This is second in a series that you really should read in order.

You know what you're getting. Including Adrian dithering forever before actually doing things in important fights. There was one fight that was so frustrating with Adrian playing Muser General wandering the fringe, noting important details while doing jack-freaking-squat about them! It was so frustrating I very nearly stopped reading right there.

I'm only mildly glad I didn't. It never got that bad again, but it was never great. Adrian Dithers should be his full name. Because he does. Oooo. You know what the collective noun of a group of Adrians would be? A dither! And if there were a lot, like a swarm of Adrians, I'd go so far as to call it an ineffectual dither.

I'm giving this three stars despite Adrian's lack-of action prowess. I liked many of the other characters and the plot didn't suck. I can see the suck coming in the next one, though, because they're headed to a settlement run by sadistic suckwads and that means Adrian is going to have to confront moral crap that he's no good with. Plus ship on a metric suck-ton of new guilt when he inevitably has to kill folks who have it coming. Meanwhile, he has two female party members to put in jeopardy for kicksies and I don't trust Kozlowski not to mine the pathos out of that. So yeah. Kick out the three stars and run, that's me.

A note about Chaste: Adrian is still true to his distant wife. There's no shenanigans. Thankfully. So it's pretty chaste.

A good continuation of the series. Not great but pretty good. It has it's moments. The world building is probably the best part of the book. The characters aren't that great. There are also moments that make me pull my hair out with the MCs actions (or more specifically his innactions). There is 5 minutes of dialogue about the action happening around him and then he makes a comment about how stupid he is for standing around doing nothing. The MCs thoughts are jumbled sometimes and he contradicts himself a lot.

As much as I liked book 1, I think book 2 hit a bit of a sophomore slump. It happens to the best writers, especially after hitting it out of the park on book 1.

The title of the book tells the story: Delay.

Yep. There are delays upon delays upon delays here. First it is a lucu who targets the strongest magic user, which is Adrian. What does Adrian do to fill the time? Well, a bit of hunting and causing fire salamanders trouble, and then he's back to overthinking.

Sure, he's leveling up some of his skills, and he's working on the path of intelligence, but as a reader it comes across as overthinking. We're left with big blocks of text that are basically Adrian thinking about things, or talking to his interface (which rarely goes well, yet he persists. More overthinking.)

The bits and bobs of action we do get are okay, but they're very limited. The best are the possums, with fire salamanders coming in a close second.

After that it's a bit of grinding, some alchemy while overthinking things, dealing with people, and stuff like that.

The notifications are just as voluminous as last time, and I can imagine narrators suddenly becoming busy with other projects when the author reaches out to them to narrate. Nah, narrators would never do that.

Overall, this is still a promising series, but the action is what pulled us in, and action is what is going to pull us out of this ennui. That final event of book 2 (I won't spoil) was hard to read, simply because Adrian was overthinking every little aspect of what he was doing. Yes, I realize he was affected by the monster, but still. I skipped a few pages in that section.

Finally, it seemed odd that there were no more portals. The imps were pretty ease once he figured them out, and I'd expected the group to come across another portal enemy during their travels. It didn't happen.

I'll read book 3, which based upon the author's note sounds promising. We'll see after that.

4/5*

Intelligent LitRPG

Loved the explanation of the difference between sentience and sapience in book one. Could you please have one of your characters explain what decimate actually means ;)

Awesome second book

Awesome second book to a unique and fun apocalypse series. Most of this novel has the MC trying to power himself up before making a journey to another city to check when is loved ones. Grinding is not easy and certainly painful however he is Using a non standard interface to help. Lots of fighting lots of new abilities in lots of learning. All good. Looking forward to the next book.

Another great book

Not much of a reviewer. Solid editing work done and nice consistent flow of the story. Would suggest either changing the font or italicize parts of the book depending on the situation (excerpts from reading a book or the mind conversations between MC and interface or the surprise at the end).

Because I’m putting in this review so long after I actually read this book, I don’t really know if this is really the spot for it, so I’ll most likely end up putting the same review for all the books in the series.

I debated going 4* on this, and I’ll probably change to it on Amazon.

I really enjoyed the books so far. I think the author has really done an amazing job of capturing the feeling of what someone going through this would do. Hyper focus and all.

My main problem is how the main character flip flops so much. There are moments of extreme competence and struggle, and then there’s whole sections of “woe is me”.

Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to read this series as I find it extremely enjoyable. You should too.

I thought the first one was bad

I was hopeful that number 2 would be better. It was far worse. There is little adventure within these pages. The author literally writes a text box within the book and forces you to read it. Dull and boring! The first book took 25% for MC to cross a car park. Couldn’t even be bothered naming main enemy other than ‘the bird’. Spends pages on internal debate with unclear reasoning and competing thoughts that are unclear if the thoughts originate with MC or interface. Is very poorly written with sentences missing words even on the very first page of the book. I would have loved to find a good litrpg written by an Australian author- but this is not it. I rarely abandon series but this is too terrible to continue.

Good

I love the world and the system. Hugely complex. Having different levels of interfaces makes for a lot of interesting changes. MC is laying foundation to become OP, if he survives.

I do want to say that there are sections that drag a bit with introspection.

Author stated book 3 is with beta readers, so YAY!

KU Review

Solid progress for the team. A good lead up and start to their journey. Foreshadowing of bigger things at play. Looking forward to the next.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

If you liked the first, you'll like the second

This book seemed slightly on the shorter side, but was still enjoyable. The MC continues to grow, but not so much to make him OP. Other characters get further developed and the MCs party is finally flushed out.

Dude... it just keeps getting better

Worth a read. Especially since as of this book release, 3 and 4 are about to be released. Good story. Good characters. Excellent sense of plot. Well edited. Cant really ask for more.

Overall pretty good.

I mostly enjoyed this book but the interface of the MC is super annoying. I hope the author either fixes this in the upcoming books in some way or just basically drops the interaction of the MC and the interface.

Rough start, excellent finish.

So the first 49% of this book should have been condensed into 2 chapters. Not half a book. Most of it was insane rambling, at one point I was reading paragraphs of a book inside a book, the MC having an anti being a hero complex and developing side characters that we're likely done with, or could be developed better later if we ever re encounter them. We set up another major threat only for the MC to have nothing to do with it, or showing he's not all powerful. That definitely didn't deserve half a book.

Having said all of that. The second half was everything I was hoping for. Good development, good plot, getting out of Wagga. If the first half of this book was reduced to 10% of what it was and the book length dropped accordingly, nothing new added, this would easily be a 5* book. More if I could give it. I actually almost stopped reading the beginning was so tedious, knowing we're leaving the settlement behind and literally nothing important happening. I'm glad I powered through at the end, but if the third book does the same I can't see me continuing.

A complex universe of events is always changing plans, Melbourne soon

As Adrian and the team work to grow stronger before leaving for Melbourne, he begins discovering more and more about the world after Alpha events. Things are connected more than he could imagine but he easily accepts that interfaces, traders, and loot cheats exist to help humanity (or the current race in an alpha event) to survive. Failure is the higher probability as the alpha particles increase the power and strength of every affected creature, including plants.
Information is more important than ever in a world we know nothing about. In fact regional knowledge is a purchasable skill that greatly increases survival chances by proving information on observed creatures. Growing strong enough to defeat those creature is a different journey fraught with peril and pain. But no pain, no gain has always been a saying for a reason.
A great ending that has me on the edge of my seat and ready to dive into the next book already!

Good but a bit of a Whiny MC.

This was an enjoyable story with an excellent background but. I have had it up to here with how whiny the main character is. I swear in every chapter he has to whine and whine and whine about something. This is a good story if you can get through the main characters constant internal complaining or regrets. I honestly did not mind that in the beginning because it made him very human but now that two novels have gone by and it hasn’t slowed down one bit it’s just becoming repetitive and depressing. There are many Systems Apocalypse storylines out there, cover the whole range in this genre and since I’ve read a lot of them I distinguish them by nature of the main character. In this one I would classify it as the whiny system apocalypse story.

System style fun continues

A very diverse, strong, and trainwreck of a journey. With density of action and experience packed into the plot development its easy to miss that only 6ish months have passed but the crazy train is not losing momentum. The MC is still a bit to navel gasing for me, always overthinking and to in touch with his feelings...sometimes a boot is just meant for kicking azz! Know Evil! Then give it a punt.
The "system" is interesting less of the interface PLEASE! This book took until the end to really define the interface which now that it is revealed was to long and was a character that got to many lines. Hopefully book three will give it less screentime. Looking forward to book 3. Good romp!

A good story buried in there

The writing and the MC are nothing short of maddening. The MC moves erratically from laser focused killer driven to get stronger to the next moment being frozen is self flagellation and indecision. While the behavior might be realistic in context it is difficult to read. Paired with this is the authors equally neurotic need to pad the story with copious exposition. Usually in the middle of an action scene.

Despite the negatives, I did finish both the first two books. Though there was a lot of skimming... I love the premise and there is enormous potential here. I agree with the MC though in wanting rip out his interface and burn it slowly. Hindsight will likely reduce that ....

Still have an issue with the game mechanics, but I’m looking the plot

I found this book to be more satisfying than the first. I still don’t like the inconsistent leveling information between standard and nonstandard interfaces - it’s confusing and makes the whole idea of a level to become meaningless.

Adrian is starting to make better choices. He’s still a little too focused on a very unlikely hope, but he’s realized that he needs more power and is willing to do whatever it takes for him to become strong enough to succeed.

I also like that he’s now in a solid party and not just off on his own. He seems to be the kind of person who needs the company of others in order to avoid becoming a bit maniacal.

Nitty gritty in a good way

Ever wonder what magic would be like if it was hard? What if you could learn things by study and work and putting yourself through intense pain?

Well, wonder no more as the author does an outstanding job in this documentary of Alpha Physics.

In this episode we learn more about
* Spoiler
* Spoiler
* And spoiler

We observe the MCs continual descent into madness and explore post apocalyptic ethics.

We find that Aussie's can't change their stripes and stick by their mates.

And we find that no matter how OP lucky you are, you might just be a puppet in some billions years old game or research project.

Story is interesting - takes some fun jabs

I think this book is fascinating in that it takes some interesting tweaks on the standard LitRPG system or interface that powers abilities.

Yes, some interfaces / systems mock the main character. Some are obnoxious or a fan of the main character and want their success.

In this case it’s a more complicated situation that is effectively a symbiotic relationship with aspects of the typical mocking but on a more even footing. The interface existing at all is sort of a novel concept.

The story is fun, the prose could use some work but there’s some inventive ideas in it.

Incconsistant

This book fully lost me. The main character is really hard to like. He simultaneously has a hero complex with his thought that he needs to provide for every single person he interacts with. Is insufferable glass half full all the time, yet still acts like he knows everything. The powers are so inconsistent. His mana pool is like .40 higher than average using his scale which is around 300% higher than average yet most battles he is low on mana within e-6 castings. He is annoyingly slow to act just standing in the middle of the opossum battle for half of it just going over things in his head. It just doesn't work

I grabbed this up because I'm still curious about Alpha Physics and Adrian the MC. And I found a book that is as good as the first book, Wagga. Also Adrian's plans to leave for Melbourne are delayed as new monster has picked up the hunt for humans where the bird left off, and this time it's going after magic users. Adrian really doesn't want to leave Wagga in the lurch. All the while he keeps leveling up!
Plus Adrian who's always had issues with his system interface (AI) and finally has it out with it. The fight for control ended in a stalemate and they've come to a uneasy truce.
It's truly amazing how quickly I'm absorbed by the action and fighting. Making this truly a fun and addictive series to latch onto. And I betcha that you can't read just one!

no more of this series for me

I forced myself to read the second book in the series after reading the first one. For me, the author gets too bogged down in details and I skipped large portions of the book because of this. Also the fact that the MC stands there I. The middle of fights wasting time thinking about what he should do instead of doing something.

Also the interface between the MC and it I also find annoying. Just got to the point where I cannot force myself to read more of the series. Too much of the MC being all wishy washy.

Good

The overall second book in this series was pretty decent read. It was not as entertaining as the first book, but it kept me in it til the end. The first half of the book was really slow and took way too long for him to make any progress on his paths, but once the group left Wagga the book got alot more interesting and fun too read. The mana storm was an interesting touch. I was hoping he was going to improve his attributes, but the subsequent battle shows me where you where going with it.

Make me work for it why don't you.

I love these books. It's so unusual to see a slow progression towards power. So often the MC gets an overwhelmingly powerful ability and then cheeses the rest of the series with it. In this case each upgrade is earned and visceral and so much more real because of it. I eagerly look forward to each new step and each new point of progress. I can't wait to unravel all the mystery inherent in this system apocalypse book.

Everyone, and I mean everyone talks like Groot

"I am" summarizes nicely my only real objection here. For the love of god, doesn't anyone in this world use contractions, ever? I'm. We're. They're. They've. They'll. They'd. It feels like a wordy Groot wrote this.
Did the mana storms take all of the apostrophes with the technology? Three stars so hopefully you read this. Without that immensely annoying factor, this is 5 star material.

Good story, but suboptimal execution

I really enjoyed this book. However, I enjoyed the first better given that there was at least some direction. This book is filled with the character’s thoughts which can be excessive at times; however I still read through and listened to the audiobook as well and found it still decently entertaining. I will give book 3 a shot and see what this series has in store. I have high hopes.
