When the parents of Jason, Jenny and David Sinclair buy a game reserve in South Africa, the thought of living in a foreign country surrounded by wild animals is exciting. At first the three children are thrilled by their new surroundings although it soon becomes obvious that not everything is satisfactory in their new home. The property they have purchased is dilapidated and the current occupants of the house are scorpions, snakes and a variety of other local wildlife, none of which appear to be in a hurry to leave. The land is also supposedly haunted by the spirit of an ancient ghost lion but these concerns all diminish as they discover that the reserve is being used as a base by ruthless poachers. Despite these unexpected setbacks the family decide to make the best of the situation and the three children are determined to protect their property and resolve to investigate and discover the mastermind behind the poaching ring. With the help of Sipho, a local Shangaan boy, they begin to believe that they have uncovered the identity of the ringleader but their parents are unwilling to accept their theory, forcing the children to take more risks to substantiate their theory. They discover that the poachers are using a series of hidden caves beneath the land but before they can advise the authorities the poachers trap Jenny and Sipho. With disaster pending they are assisted by a surprising new ally in the form of the local witchdoctor. Jason and David are finally able to convince their parents and the local authorities of what they have uncovered but they arrive too late and the poachers are already making their escape. The story reaches its dramatic and exciting conclusion with a chase along an underground river and the discovery that certain people are not whom they appear to be as well as the truth behind the ghost lion. This book is aimed at the ten to twelve age group and combines a fast paced adventure story with the concerns of current environmental issues.
