I wrote The Guardians' Daughter during a very difficult time in my life, and because of that, mental health is a prominent theme which I'm very proud of. My love of superheroes and romance helped me craft this story together becoming my own special form of therapy.
TGD follows the story of two strong protagonists, Ember and Aiden, who have had challenges in their lives and both are trying to move forward to live a life with meaning. Ember Vulterra doesn't know who she is without her parents' legacy, while Aiden Stiles has fixated on his future to ignore the pain from his past.
The Guardians' Daughter is a story full of suspense, mystery, and more importantly one of love and forgiveness. I do hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

What a great debut novel!
Ember Vulterra stays hidden in the shadows and pushes everyone she once loved aside. Then everything changes when she enrolls in college and attempts to step out of her parent’s footsteps. But the past is hard to bury and secrets surface that turn her world upside down.
This duet superhero romance is filled with mystery, suspense, and intrigue. I love the characters! Especially Stella and Billy because of their love and devotion to their friends. I love that we get to witness the characters grow physically, mentally, through their powers, and their relationships. But there are a lot of characters to remember throughout the book and I found myself back tracking to recall who they were and what their abilities were.
Although in the beginning it was slow moving the overall pace of the novel was good. I found some of the descriptions to be long and I was skimming to get to the main idea. Some of the dialogue was confusing because in-between was a description and I forgot what the dialogue said before it x). What really stood out to me was the combat scenes! They are written very well.
The heat level for this romance is 2/5, there is some sweet kisses, tension, and touching but I wanted more LOL. But overall I felt all the feels and look forward to the next book in the series!

A unique and interesting approach to a superhero story. In this world, most people have superpowers—but only the most talented, and noble opt to be Guardians. The powers in this world are so unique, and I really appreciated the imagination put into them.
This is a romance heavy, YA spin on a superhero story, and as a superhero writer, and lover, I enjoyed the twist on my usual loves.

I saw this book promoted by the author on Instagram months ago and have finally gotten around to reading it. It was definitely worth the purchase, and I (as someone who loves superheroes) had a lot of fun while reading it.
There are five critiques I have about this story:
— The romance was good, exciting, and full of mutual healthy support, but it happened a bit too fast. The characters were well on their way to falling for each other, and they resolved their issues before the end of the book. However, I could see why someone else would really like it. These characters are *good* for each other.
+ The author is very clear about the trauma and mental health issues that plague her characters. Kudos to her for not glossing over that because it’s uncomfortable, for making her characters real, and for speaking to something that should be spoken about. And for showing a male hero who cries — a much-needed depiction.
+ The friends in this story, both Stella and Billy, are awesome friends. I loved that part.
+ I also loved that the author does *not* weaken Ember as a character in order to make her fit with the male MC (many sci fi & fantasy authors do). She knows how to use her abilities, and she is the sort to fight her own battles.
+ The abilities (a world full of them!) and the mystery were awesome.
I don’t usually read sci fi… but I eagerly await Book 2! Way to go, A.M.!

If you are looking for a YA novel filled with love, loss, secrets, and a great female protagonist, this is the read for you! I loved Ember, who was one of our main characters. She wasn’t afraid to try something new and didn’t let herself get pushed around by other people. On the other hand, I found Aiden to be an average love interest. The way his mental health was addressed so well really blew me away, but I felt he was TOO overprotective of Ember at times. The main reason why I gave this a 3.5 stars though and not more was because I found the plot to be pretty slow and predictable till around 75%. It was pretty romance heavy, with not much action going on, like the main “Guardian and Villian” plot was side tracked due to Ember and Aiden. When it did start picking up though, I couldn’t put the book down! It was amazing to see the characters embracing their talents. I just wish it had been more spread out rather than all at the end. Additionally, I found the world really cool, but it had so much unused potential. This was a promising debut novel from McPherson, and can’t wait to see how the sequel is!

McPherson perfectly constructed a superhero world! I found it particularly interesting how she made it unusual for people NOT to have powers, and then tiered them from there. On top of that, McPherson nailed young love and the rocky waters that encircle it. Her use of multiple POVs was done stupendously, and I thought the way she intertwined the fate of these two MCs -Ember and Aiden- was creative, intense, and done extremely well. Ember's angst was tangible and consistent, and Aiden is so hard working and lionhearted that I just wanted to hug him (or if I was his age, maybe kiss him). But truly, he is just so honorable he wins your heart quick, and the battle with mental health issues makes him even more human and relatable. He's one of those characters I would think of when people ask the question, "If you could have coffee with any fictional character today who would you pick?"
The story is well done and I 100% recommend it. Particularly to anyone who likes superheroes, comics, X-men and the like. Or even young love romance with strong female leads and hard working, honorable men.

I received an ARC copy of this book to read and review. If you know me, you know that I love nothing more than a superhero romance– ESPECIALLY one with a lot of angst, and SUPER ESPECIALLY one where the love interest has a whole entire dark, sordid secret that he has keep to from his love.

The world-building and characters are wonderful. Also, not to be dramatic, but I would DIE for Lime. How do I get a cute lil' stone golem?! Asking for a friend.
I think the only thing I didn't like (and this is my personal preference and not anything against the author, just throwing this out for any readers like me!) is that it tends to lean more towards the coming-of-age/fantasy YA genre with the "school for people with special abilities" setting. Totally cool if you're into that sort of thing, and I will say that it is very well done and original! I'm just not a particular fan of that genre/trope. (I prefer adult superheroes/villains. Because I'm old.)
Overall, a fantastic debut that I would highly recommend for fans of Harry Potter, My Hero Academia, Teen Titans and RWBY.

This is book one in a series from a new author.
The book is a YA novel and told in the viewpoints of Ember and Aiden.
I found this to be a very interesting idea. Its set in a world where people have powers/are superheroes. I am a fan of xmen and shows like heroes so this book really appealed to me.
Both main characters are likable and the story flows well. I liked that mental health played a part in the story, so trigger warning if that's something you don't like to have in a book.
I think if you are a fan of YA fiction and like superheroes it's definitely worth giving this a look when it's released.

I enjoyed reading this book.
I loved the characters the author created... the main protagonists Ember and Aiden, and their families and friends... My absolute favourite character is Lime...
The world the author created is an improvement on our would, more tolerant... A world where it is Guardians against Villians...
Mixed with the amazingly interesting story, is loads of insight, and wisdom...

I loved the world that the author built for this story, it really engulfs you into the world and makes you feel like you are there. I am not normally a fan of romance but I actually enjoyed it in this book. The characters are incredible, and I really enjoy when it shifts perspective to show both main characters inner turmoil. I can't wait to read the sequel!

A.M McPherson's The Guardians' Daughter is the first book in The Stalwarth Chronicles series, named for the elite college at the center of the book. The story takes place in a world where superpowers are the norm and are referred to as simply "abilities." Ember Vulterra is the orphaned daughter of two famous "guardians," a sort of elite superhuman police force, who were killed by a supervillain. She possesses power over heat. Aiden Stiles suffers from guilt because he was present at the event, and perceives that he didn't do enough to help. He can project forcefields, among other things. They meet as freshmen at Stalwarth, and soon fall for each other. Aiden hides his past from Ember, his guilt being a central conflict.
This is an altogether very original and engaging superhero romance. The two leads are beautifully drawn characters with believable flaws, Ember a reluctant celebrity with poor social skills, Aiden an enthusiastic student, driven by his guilt feelings. There are not many action scenes, but action isn't the focus. This is about the romance between the leads, and also about their own inner conflicts. After all, both struggle with mental illnesses. There is something enthralling about the notion that superhumans struggle with emotional disorders, which are, after all, enough to drive any plot.
I initially had my doubts about the "world where 'abilities' are the norm" concept, thinking along the lines of The Incredibles, "if everyone is super, then nobody is." However, McPherson sold it beautifully. This book takes that idea and builds an enthralling and fun fantasy world around it, with unusual and inventive magical abilities showing up around every corner. Some of the abilities might even come off as silly at first, but they prove to have interesting uses. Many of the side characters are likable, my favorite being Stella, who has the power to create rock golems.
If there's one negative, it's the sheer number of characters. Stalwarth is populated with many students, and from time to time, the crowd can occasionally get a little overwhelming. Still, this doesn't harm the story too badly, since the most important characters are engaging, and the focus remains on them.
The Guardians' Daughter is a very original and affecting superhero story all around. If you enjoy fantasy, romance with an honest look at mental health, then you will certainly enjoy it.

Absolutely loved this book! It’s a fresh take on the superhero genre with a witty tone and romantic twist that I absolutely enjoyed from beginning to end!
The dual perspectives of both Ember and Aiden were very engaging and through them were introduced to a very heart-warming slow-burn romance that’s intertwined with a growing mystery surrounding their school.
Ember’s fiery attitude coupled with Aiden’s anxiety made for an interesting dynamic that really works! They’re both really strong characters with great support systems behind them in the forms of Billy and Stella, whom I also adored as characters.
As a lover of superheroes and superhero related fiction, this book hit the marks on keeping me entertained while also keeping things fresh! That said, the true soul of this narrative is the attention brought to dealing with grief and taking care of mental health, which I fell in love with.
I highly recommend this casual, fun read to anyone who loves their superhero fiction with a little bit of love that’s not so easy to obtain! Looking forward to Ember and Aiden’s continued growth in the upcoming sequel!

McPherson has created a world where most people have super powers, but even the most powerful discover they are powerless against their own emotions. When the orphaned daughter of two of the city's most respected Guardians finally goes off to college, she has a lot to learn: about herself and the secrets that other people keep.
The tense and POV choices were a struggle for me, being new to this type of story, but the distinct and varied character cast kept me in the world. The world itself is a fascinating take on the premise of powers being more common than rare, and holds its own mystery that will hopefully be resolved over the course of the series. Though the usual powers are present, she fills the population with a wide array of unique talents and vivid descriptions.
If you're a fan of first-person POV and present tense narratives, tortured hearts and fantastic abilities, then you'll likely enjoy this tale of romantic young heroes.

I loved this book, it was an easy and fun read, the characters Ember and Aiden were wonderfully written and McPherson writes about depression, guilt, the grieving process and how to find happiness again through the characters Aiden and Ember in such a moving way.
Her side character Stella and the rock golem Lime were so fun, I would be tempted to even see a side story with just them one day. Stella is an amazing friend to Ember and the rock golem Lime will steal your heart!
I also love the creativity of all the characters special abilities at the University setting as well. Definitely got Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters vibes, along with a smidge of Hogwarts.
There is a bonus chapter for next book at the end, which I won’t spoil here. I enjoyed this and am excited for the sequel coming May 2023!

Where most superhero stories focus on the rarity of the powers, in this world A.M. makes it more rare not to have powers. As Ember navigates these new waters, secrets are revealed and the plot delves into dealing with depression, grieving and in general mental health. The characters were descriptive and each had their own little quirks that represented their unique personalities. Ember and Aiden’s love story developed throughout the story and the growth they both experienced had you cheering them on.
Overall, if you like superhero romances, world building and don’t mind a good YA story, I recommend diving into this series. 💚

This fresh YA debut fantasy is populated with super-power heroes and baddies that kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed the author’s creative world-building and characters, whose names often reflected their unique abilities, like Digger and Emerald Blaze. My favorite minor player was Lime, a small, sentient rock companion complete with arms and legs. I want a Lime of my own!
With its elements of school, teen angst, and gentle romance sprinkled between action scenes, “The Guardians’ Daughter” is a satisfying read for fantasy-loving young adults.

I don't usually read superhero fantasy books but I really enjoyed this one. The characters are likeable and the story line kept me engaged. It is also a clean read. A fun novel overall.

One thing I really like about The Guardians' Daughter is the setting. A university with a program for people with superpowers to learn how to be superheroes is a cool idea and makes sense for the world A.M. McPherson created. I also like how we are able to follow the main character and love interest's character arcs through two 1st-person POVs. It gave a deeper insight into their struggles, goals, and achievements. Also, I love the book quality of The Guardians' Daughter, and the font is easy to read.

Now for some maybe slightly spoilery type comments. You’ve been warned.
I feel like this book was a PSA for breaking the stigma around mental health. It is a fun action hero type story, but the characters carry the weight of truly traumatic pasts. The crap hits the fan hard in the first couple chapters and the characters are left reeling for the rest of the book dealing with aftershocks of trauma that sometimes don’t even hit until years later. As someone diagnosed with PTSD I appreciated the conversation about receiving help and therapy. It really does help! But back to the story! I felt frustrated and angry and sad and blown away by realizations along with the characters. Ember is a fire cracker of a girl learning to contain and control her fire in more ways than one. My fav character through has to be Aiden. I love the non-toxic masculinity he demonstrates. He is a BA guy who is tough and works hard and can handle is own, but he also isn’t ashamed of tears when they are warranted.
This is a great debut novel and I can’t wait to find out what happens next in the series!

I am so glad I went outside my normal book reading box and decided to read this one! The author did a fantastic job building this world of superheros and villains - so descriptive, I was able to envision everything. I can't wait to see what is in store for Ember & Aiden in book 2!

I'd like to start by saying that this isn't my usual genre. YA Superhero Fiction was something I never thought I'd be all that interested in reading about, but when I heard the premise of this story, I decided to venture out of my usual genres and give it a try. And you know what? I really enjoyed it.
There was a good balance between romance and suspense, and just the right amount of bigger themes covered - like mental health and past trauma. The decision to write the story from two POVs was excellent, and I found myself routing for the main characters very early on. They're very well-rounded and human, in the sense that neither of them are perfect and each comes with their own set of unique issues that are faced throughout the story.
The dialogue could have been a bit tighter in some places, but since it's YA it didn't bother me all that much. The language used is definitely suitable for young readers, but adults can absolutely enjoy it too (I did!).
Overall, I'd give it 4.5 stars. It's an excellent debut novel from a new author, and I look forward to not only continuing this series but seeing what else she puts out in the future.

Wow! I am really impressed by this debut novel by A.M. McPhearson.
What I loved
I love the worldbuilding to start with. The unique powers of the MCs and the side characters kept me interested. I would love to see some character art on this one. I really enjoyed the romance. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Will they, won't they? I also loved how she wove mental health into the story in such a wonderfully supportive manner. We need more of this!
What I didn't love
Honestly, I can't think of anything. The story had me engrossed from start to finish.

I loved this. I felt like the authors details were so good I felt like I was watching everything unfold instead of just reading it. Her characters were very creative. I cannot wait to see where the rest of the series takes this story.

This book is about a young woman, Ember, whose parents were murdered when she was young. They were Guardians, which are basically superheroes with awesome talents they use to keep the world safe. Flash forward to adulthood, and Ember goes off to a university where she meets Aiden, who knows quite a bit about Ember's past.
Ember and Aiden start hanging out and feelings generate between them. Aiden is keeping a secret from Ember, so he tries his best to keep an emotional distance from her, even though it's incredibly hard for him.
Things I liked:
I think I'm in a large group of people who love the character Lime! He's just so cute! Imagine a little rock golem "eating" chicken nuggets, when in reality they just break off into pieces and fall out of his mouth lol.
There were a lot of interesting characters walking around at the university. I enjoyed A.M.'s descriptions of them sprinkled throughout. It made me want to go to a school like that!
There is a scene where Aiden and Ember do hand-to-hand combat and I enjoyed the description: "A sly smile plays at her lips, and I copy it. She runs for me with her hands in front of her, prepared for a fight. With a sudden boost, she flies ever so slightly off the ground with her burning fist aimed right at my head.
I grab her right before she hits me, ignoring the burning pain, and forcefully pull her toward me.
She wasn't expecting my strength and crashes into my body."

A.M. has created an incredible world full of both unique abilities and relatable characters. The book is lead by two great protagonists, Ember, the powerful female lead who learns not only to trust others, but also that she CAN be her own person, and Aiden, the strong yet sensitive male character who shows us that mental health is just as important as physical capabilities.
More focused on the romance and the characters than the action, this was a great debut novel to introduce us to the main cast and ease us into a world that feels familiar and yet drastically different to our own. While the plot follows Ember and Aiden, they are supported by friends who are just as unique in personalities and abilities. Including a very fun little rock that may just steal your lunch!
The way the author portrays and tackles the challenges of mental health is very well done. It's not a taboo subject and the characters understand and support each other along the way, adding to the development and character growth for everyone involved.
A nice easy read that has me yearning to learn more of the world and what is going to happen to our power couple (pun intended), especially after what happened in the end! Excellent start and can't wait for more!

The Guardian’s Daughter, by A.M. McPherson is book 1 in the Stalwarth Chronicles with book 2, The Guardians’ Secret in the works. Told in alternating points of view, one of Ember, the other of Aiden, this superhero love story jumps right into the action when Ember’s superhero parents are murdered. Grief weights heavy on Ember and Aiden is guilt laden and conflicted about his new relationship with Ember because as a child he witnessed her parents’ murders and was unable to help.
One aspect I particularly enjoyed in the story are the friendships Ember and Aiden form. Though these co-protagonists both buried emotions that are resurfacing and each of them has a friend, someone who listens, guides and supports. These relationships are crucial to Ember and Aiden’s healing and ability to move forward personally and in their relationship.
The author does a good job of setting up the chronicles as the Guardians train to take on formidable foes known as the cursed. The foreshadowing and unanswered questions, make me want to read on to find out what happens. A recommended read.

The intro to our main characters is a sad one. You can understand the pain both of them felt. But the intro to Lime and Embers roommate Stella is cute! Oh gosh the tension between Ember and Aiden as well as just Embers tension of being there is fierce. At least she loosened up a bit to Aiden and more around her roommate Stella! "Two slices of pepperoni" best description for major blushing!! Oh my gosh finding out about how there was so much going on when Embers parents were killed made my heart hurt.
I'm glad Aiden is opening up and help Ember open up!

An intriguing debut novel with a fantastic premise. I'd say it's something like Harry Potter meets DC superheroes and there's a hint that book 2 is going to throw in a bit of the feel from The Boys.
It's a fast-paced high-stakes action adventure with some pretty good world building and a very strong character pair. The only thing I would have liked is for the romance elements to have been written better. I couldn't quite get into the emotion of the characters' feelings, as if I was being kept at arm's length from them.
I am curious to see where things are going to go from here and will definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book.
