Highland Healers #2

The Witch of Black Isle

Rate this book
Two misfits both feel the sting of loneliness.
But are their differences too great to overcome?

Jennet Ramsey has lost her dearest friend. Not to death, but to marriage. The inseparable girls grew up traveling with Jennet’s mother, the most renowned healer in Scotland. Now alone, Jennet feels adrift with no compass. She’s a talented healer but lacks self-confidence and is considered socially inept and cold due to her analytical mind. With her friend married, Jennet is isolated and wonders if she’ll ever find her own happiness or true purpose on Black Isle. Then, when summoned back home to cure the mysterious illness ailing her father, she fails miserably, and her father lashes out at her. Leaving the Ramsey keep in humiliation, she’s abducted. Resourceful and clever, she claims to be a witch and uses trickery to make her captors believe she’s cursed them, fooling all but one of them, an evil man whose vile intentions could leave her dead.

Ethan Matheson is considered odd. Intensely loyal, he’s a fierce warrior and deadly with a dagger. A born voyager skilled with direction and tracking, he could lead large groups of men, but prefers the solitude of the stars because they never change or deceive him. However, one woman on Black Isle makes him rethink his stance on being alone—if only he could forget his past and learn to trust again. Encouraged by his brothers, Ethan insists he escort Jennet on her trip to Ramsey keep, hoping to have a chance to get to know her. But a misunderstanding between them has Ethan leaving early, feeling, once again, that he will never find someone to share his life with. As he rides, he can’t rid himself of the foreboding sensation Jennet is in trouble and rushes back in time to rescue her.

Soon after they arrive at Black Isle, news of her ‘witchcraft’ spreads and she is to be tried and put to death. But Ethan will not lose his one chance at happiness—no matter what he must do.

Different

Jennet was a healer and too clever and quick in the mind to see things the way everyone else did. Her parents and sisters said she was “different”, and Jennet thought it must be true as she had no interest in men.

Ethan, a young warrior from a a related clan was also different. He had a bad experience as a very young lad and couldn’t stand the touch of anyone who was not his family.

Something about Jennet made Ethan interested in her, so he promised his brother that he would try to get to know her. It was lucky for Jennet that he followed her, or when she was kidnapped by reivers, they would have had their way with her. Ethan rescued her, and realized that to some extend he could be touched by Jennet.

The rest of the tale is full of the adventures of a time long gone in the Scottish Highlands, and a “different” clean romance. I couldn’t give it five stars, but is worth a solid four.

ANOTHER GREAT!!! The Witch of Black Isle by Keira Montclair is book 2 in the Highland Healers series and I am so loving this series. Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. This is defiantly a medieval version of the TV show The Big Bang Theory which I am a huge fan so I was thrilled reading this book. There is Jennet as Amy and Ethan as Sheldon. Keira has such an amazing and unique way of writing that they are easy to read and most exciting. I found myself holding my breath more than once. This story has a healer, a good honest man, accused of being a witch, attended rape, rescue, a festival, cruel girls, a life changing event, sickness, wounds, loving family, fevers, does not like being touched, trust, and falling in love. I am highly recommending you read this book it really is a fantastic read.

The Witch of Black Isle
Highland Healers #2
Keira Montclair
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Jennet Ramsey has lost her best friend and cousin to marriage. The girls were always inseparable and traveled with Jennet's Mother who is the most renowned healer in Scotland. Now that she's on her own she feels so lost. Jannet is a very talented healer herself, but she lacks self confidence and comes across as rather cold due to her analytical mind. Jennet now wonders if she will ever find her own happiness or even her true purpose on Black Isle. Then she is called back home to cure her ailing father who has a mysterious illness that even her Mother can't seem to cure. One day while Jannet is trying to help heal her father he lashes out at her and almost hits her. Jannet runs from the Ramsey keep very upset wanting to go back to Black Isle, but ends up getting abducted instead. Being as resourceful as she is, she claims to be a witch and tricks her captors into believing she's a witch and letting her go. But there is one that she didn't really fool. A very evil man whose vile intentions could leave her dead.

Ethan Matheson is definitely considered odd. He's loyal, a feirce warrior, and deadly with a dagger. He is very smart and skilled with direction and tracking, but he perfers the solitude of the stars because they never change or deceive him. However there is one woman on Black Isle that makes him rethink his choice to be alone. If only he could get over the past and learn to trust again, but that is easier said then done. After some encouragement from his brothers, Ethan insists he escorts Jennet on her trip to the Ramsey keep, hoping to have the chance to get to know her better. But a misunderstanding between them has Ethan leaving early, feeling once again, that he will never find someone to share his life with. As he rides he can't stop feeling that somehow Jennet is in trouble and he rushes back in time to save her.

Not long after they arrive at the Black Isle, news of her witchcraft spreads and she is again abducted so that she can be tried and put to death. But Ethan will not loose his one chance at happiness. Not this time, and he will do whatever it takes to get it.

Keira Montclair is incredibly brilliant. This book was so good. I couldn't seem to be able to stop reading for anything. It had me from the get go. The way Jannet and Ethan were was so adorable and sweet. They were absolutely perfect for eachother. You might even say they complimented one another. I also love the fact that I feel like I always get to visit with old friends in Ms. Montclair's books. Old friends that feel very much like family. Ms. Montclair this was an excellent novel and I can't wait to see what the next two main characters in the next book are up to. This book was worthy of alot more then five stars in my opinion.

I think this could be one of my favorite romances. I loved a couple that doesn’t fall into the typical pattern or timeline and even with this book fading to black I wasn’t disappointed. It all came together perfectly!

The Witch of Black Isle by Keira Montclair
Highland Healers Series Book Two
Ethan Matheson, brother to Marcas, chieftain of their clan, and married to Brigid Ramsay, has issues. He doesn’t like to be touched, says what he thinks, and pretty much sees things black and white. However, he is fond of Jennet, and when his brother Shaw says to pursue her…he does. Because he pretty much does what his brothers tell him to.
Jennet Ramsay never thought she’d feel anything for anyone. She was going to be content as the healer she is. That is until Brigid married. Losing her best friend is hard, and yet, how could she deny Brigid the happiness she found?
When Jennet returns to Ramsay land to try and help her mother heal her father, Quade, the former chieftain of the clan, something happens that has Jennet running away…alone. And straight into trouble. Another exciting story in this series. As with all of Keira’s books, I can’t wait for the next one.

Someone for everyone.

Ethan is the brother of the Matheson chief. Jennet is the youngest biological daughter of Ramsey chiefton and cousin to the wife of the Matheson chief. Because of an event in his teens, Ethan cannot stand be touched by anyone other than his siblings which makes romance hard for him. Both Jennet and Ethan have analytical minds and are viewed as special by others. The two are developing an attraction for each other when Jennet is called home to help treat her father who has an unexplained infection that will not heal. Jennet, like her mother is a healer. Ethan escorts her there but leaves when he feels like he is in the way. Jennet tries to treat her father but his pain causes him to react violently and she flees on her own to head back to clan Matheson alone. She is attacked by 4 men on the way but Ethan finds her and saves her. And that is only half the book. This book is action packed with a unique and interesting story line that kept me engaged throughout. I read it in one day. Loved it.

I don't know what it is, but if a book is set in this time period, I pretty sure I'll love it. I love this book even more because Jennet and Ethan are socially off cue.

Jennet is living on Black Isle because Marcus and his men kidnapped her and two of her cousins in the first book. The whole clan had gotten sick with what they thought was a curse and they kidnapped healers. The girls saved the clan and Brigid( one of the cousins) fell in love with Marcus and they were married.

Jennet and Marcus's brother Ethan are dancing around that they might be interested in each other. Ethan has an issue that he doesn't like to be touched, and that usually hampers connections. Just as Ethan was deciding to pursue Jennet, they got the news that Jennet's father was very injured and might die. They needed Jennet's healing ability. So Jennet goes back, but Ethan follows.

Jennet is super busy with helping her dad, so Ethan decided to go home and work out his feelings for her when she returned. Helping her dad did not go as Jennet had planned and she ran away. Some really scary stuff almost happens but Ethan is there.

As each scene happens, they both look out for each other. When Jennet cries, Ethan finds a barrier to put between them so he can hold her, and she takes no offense, but is so happy that he has found a way. They are a good pair because they both have traits that make them social misfits. They might even be neurodivergent, but that wasn't a word then. I love how Ethan overcomes his aversion time and time again for Jennet.

Obviously with the title, we all know that Jennet is accused of being a witch. That whole scene is amazing. The bad side taunting her, the good guys riding hard into the rescue. The description of how she would die, and Ethan's steadfast determination to save her no matter what.

I think Ethan might be the epitome of the perfect love story hero. He has just as much skin in the game, maybe moreso and he steps up.

4.5 STARS

The H/h were made for each other but didn't realize it. It was a long journey, especially for the H who didn't like to be touched. This was a unique story line that I can't remember reading before. He and the h were thinkers and could puzzle out things. The H had to at times have things explained by his family. I found this so endearing. He wasn't simple minded, just saw and reacted to things in a unique way.

I loved this family from the other stories I've read by this author. This is a stand alone, but as with most series, their are cross over character's, but you won't be lost.

This is a fairly clean story. There is dialogue about body parts where the h is trying to keep herself from being raped and comes up with unique suggestions what she would do to the rapist.

Some villains who wretch havoc with the H/h. Some things in the epilogue I wanted to know more. We are told things after the fact, and I wanted to read them in real time. Especially how H/h came together, how the female villain and her family just excepted something when they were so adamant for the opposite. This part felt rushed to me.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance builds slowly and a few kisses with talk of a man's body part. I received an early copy. All opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)

Captivating Emotionally Driven Love Story:
Simply a wonderful and heartfelt love story that continues the Highland Healers series,
We find Ethan and Jennet contemplating if each of them want to try to be friends or something more serious in the future? Each has a quirk in their personality that makes romance a little difficult to achieve.
Following them on their quest of discovering what it takes for them each to find love had us at times terrified, thrilled, hopeful, conquering fears, learning to trust and more.
The entire cast of characters with all of it's family members was beautiful in how the way they all supported other.
I must say that parts of the ending was gripping and had me on the edge of my seat.
The epilogue was good and you get a hint of the next book to come.
This is the second book of the series which continues the characters but it also a stand alone.
I highly recommend this well written love story.

Every time I read a new book from this author; I say, "this was the best one yet!" & once again, I will say the same thing. The couple, Ethan & Jennet, were made for each other & furthermore, the story & the couple were a perfect match!

I loved how Ethan & Jennet love slowly blossomed into a beautiful healing of two lonely souls that needed one another more than each could have imagined. The kidnapping, humiliation, loneliness, trust issues & threats of death some of the things you will experience plus trust, romance, love & belonging - it has everything to make you sigh & smile at the end! I also enjoyed seeing characters from the past books - it was liking visiting old friends. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

This was such a sweet story. Jennet was so smart, not something many looked for in a wife back then. She was so focused others thought her odd. Ethan was great with numbers and directions, but not socially. and something horrible happened in his past to make him a little more of a social outcast.

The beloved old chieftain was very sick, could this be the end how his love story? You will have to read and find out.

Ethan and Jennet have such a cute story, you will root for the good guys, and boo at the bad. Logan is there, as is Lilly, Kyle and of course Bridget. But great news, we have heard the name Padraig, but finally get to meet this handsome man and his merry personality!

Adventure, honesty, and new love, make for an excellent book!!

This author is a great story teller and her reputation continues in this book! Can’t wait for the next one!!

Careful what you speak

Jennet does not know her worth. When I felt sorry for her hmm not so much. Poor misunderstood Jennet. She is intelligent but rash and indeed foolish at times. She is drawn to Ethan who is handsome and considered odd! Ethan had a traumatic experience that scarred him and makes him of want to be touched. When Jennet attempts to heal her father and he "almost" hit her she runs away into more trouble than a little. Ethan has some reasons for his quirks and straight he since of honor but Jennet has qualms about hurting her father to bring and end to his pain!? This odd couple certainly belongs together. This story is strange and certainly is not good as the first.

The characters in this story were different, they put me in mind of Sheldon and Amy in the Big Bang.

Ethan is an intelligent man with a great memory and adept at numbers. He admires Jennet for her intelligence and her capability with healing. However, he has a thing with touch because of past trauma.

Jennet wonders if he can ever get past this, but she has bigger problems in that her father is sick and getting worse by the day. Her mother Brenna, the well known healer, doesn't know what to do and hopes that Jennet can figure something out that she can't.

This was an interesting story that I enjoyed. No intimate moments, the author has a note that she didn't want to intrude on their privacy and I tend to agree. However, they are well matched.

I preferred book 1 to this one, but it was ok. I liked that there was a HEA for Ethan and Jennet. But it also doesn’t fit the narrative well. I don’t know if the author is trying to assign characteristics of an autistic person to these two characters but that’s what it seems like. Every one considers them odd, but they’re really intelligent. He doesn’t like to be touched, which sorta stems from a teenage bullying/harassment incident. So why did he trust Cori enough some years later to lose his virginity to her? That doesn’t make much sense to the touch narrative the author was crafting.

I don’t think I’ll continue the series. It’s just not as gripping as I’d like. It’s not bad, but there are better books about highlanders and Scotland in this kind of time period.

Liked the first. This one not so much

I really liked that both principals were "different". It's very tough for people whose brains are wired differently to be accepted by more typical society, and I believe the more atypical principals we read, the more accepting we are able to become. That said, the rest of the story is rather blah, following the standard historical romance model. The characters are certainly eminently likable, the writing up to Montclair's usual high, and the story's pacing keeps you turning pages, but the plot just didn't have the spark I'm used to seeing in her work. Or maybe I'm just getting jaded.

Another great story by Keira Montclair. This is Jennet and Ethan's story. They are both unique in their own way and have some quirks that make ordinary things a little more challenging. Their story is filled with action, adventure, family strength, and proof that there is someone for everyone. As usual, the pages of the book practically turn themselves. It is a great engaging story and once you start you do not want to stop. One of the best parts of this series is seeing some of our favorite Grant and Ramsey characters. I cannot wait for the next book in the Highland Healers series.

Another Fantastic Love Story From This Author

I have read all the books by Keira Montclair and loved each and every one. The Family in all the books feel as they are my family. The Ethan and Jennet story is, as always, is full of intrigue, action, and romance. It is a very bumpy journey, with a lot problems to overcome. I loved both H/h. It has a HEA ending. I highly recommend this as I do all of her books. For the treat of your life, start reading in order, as you meet all of these characters, and come to love them all.

The One That is Meant To Be Yours

Ethan and Jenett's story was so well told. These two unique individuals find their way to each other though the timing for them is sometimes off because of serious circumstances. Logan made me laugh out loud so many times. Now, Ethan made me shed some tears. What he endured was so sad. But the one meant to be yours is out there somewhere as they both will set out to discover. I only wanted to witness when they finally are able to overcome Ethan's fears when they become one. We missed out a little on this.

Ok

For the most part this was a good read. The characters are great. My problem is that, these are suppose to be the best healers and for the first part of the book nothing could get in their way to finding what caused the illness. The second part they were all like, someday we’ll find what’s wrong, and just forgetting about wounds. I was like, seriously? Story has to make sense, even in a romance.

Another great story

Linnet travels home, hoping to heal her father of a mysterious illness. Ethan follows her because he wants to spend more time with her. He vows to protect her and they learn more about each other.

When the healing doesn't go well, Linnet flees her home and runs straight into trouble. She and Ethan face many challenges, both emotional and physical as events of the past influence present events.

This was another great entry in this series.

well written

It excites me to continue to be part of the ever increasing Ramsey and grant clans. I feel like I’m sitting in there keep enjoying the fruit pies . The author has done a terrific job of maintaining the various personalities of this now 3rd generation of highlanders in the many books (I’ve lost count) that began with Ramsay’s and grants being mortal enemies. I envy the protection given to the children and women. I wish I could be part of their family.

Some interesting personality traits not usually seen in these romance novels. Adds much interest to the characters and the plot. Found myself cheering for them to overcome their challenges and find their love. I look forward to reading the third book in the series.
