Two sisters live in a forest with their mother, just outside the town of Wunstaponia. That's just how they like it, but one day, an injured stranger stumbles into their chicken pen. He doesn't want to give his name, but they quickly find themselves tangled into his troubles, unraveling a mystery of betrayal and stolen treasure.
Rachel Roden is a natural storyteller, capable of weaving the most hilarious of fairy tales. She fell in love with the Lone Ranger in her teens, but ended up with a basketball referee instead. Together, she and the Ref homeschool their four children in the Piney Woods of East Texas, as well as any other odd kid who ends up in their house. She might also be the sole human who still uses math after college.
This is a retelling of the lesser known fairy tale Snow White and Rose Red. It keeps pretty clos to the spirit of the original story but sets it in a pioneer town somewhere in the western United States.
The magical elements are stripped away in favor of a much more realistic story.
For the price this short read is well worth it. It has interesting characters, a nice twist on an old story, and a quaint setting.tht will remind you of Saturday morning reruns of the Old black and white westerns like The Lone Ranger.
This is one of those stories where I know less than usual about the original, but I've read enough other retellings to pick out some of the broad outlines. I also had a little bit of a hard time keeping this separate from one of my favorite retellings, which probably contributed to the fact that I imagined the girls much younger than they were meant to be for probably half the story. :P I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, but other than that, it was an enjoyable story.
