Lindsey is a bestselling Science Fiction and Fantasy author who lives her life with one foot in a book—so long as that book transports her to a magical world or bends the rules of science. Her novels, from Science Fiction Adventure to Time Travel Romance, always offer a hearty dose of unreality, along with plenty of history, mystery, adventure, and romance.
When she's not working on her next novel, Lindsey spends her time hanging out with her two little boys, working in her garden, or playing board games with her husband. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family and their small pack of cats and dogs.
I waited until the final book to write a review. I first read The Echo In Time series, a totally thrilling read. Full of rich characters and scenes, the story so engrossing I stayed up all night to read the series (I’m a speed reader and finished the series in 12 hours) I became fascinated by the characters and the stories of their lives. Then I started in on The Kat Chronicles, I really wasn’t interested in reading the series I more or less started it so I could hear what happened to the characters I had come to love. LOL Hey people have had less reasons for reading a book. The first book intrigued me and then I just kept reading the rest of the series and boy was THAT an unexpected ride! I never anticipated what was going to happen in the story and that is rare for me. But then the whole previous series had been like that so I should have expected it LOL. By the time I finished the final page of the final book I felt like I had been rung completely dry of every emotion in my body, the story so rich and detailed it held every bit of my attention and breath to the very last word. I can say without a shred of doubt that this entire series (starting with the Echo books) has been the best series I have read since Harry Potter. I look forward to reading many more books by this author.
Overall I would give this series a solid 3 stars. The world building was beyond interesting with enough lore to power a ship on a trek around the world.
I had some serious issues with Kat as a character, though, and it greatly detracted from my enjoyment of the series. I couldn't grasp an adult teenager who consistently aggravated the shit out of me inspired loyalty and trust. Honestly, between her continuous pity party, complaints, and never ending ability to make rash decisions as a reflex was confounding.
I did though, enjoy a better set pace to the story line. It took six books to finally get to meet Dom as a person and while I was entertained, I didn't really connect. The action sequences in Afterlife were good and I enjoyed reading some parts. I felt the ending was still lackluster and while I don't any major issues with it, it felt kind of... blah. Anti-climatic, if you will.
Okay so I started this series with an echo in time and the first two books were great! And then the series got worse and then I started on Kats story... and it got even more worse. I meant yeah the ink witch was enjoyable you learned who Kat was but throughout the series I just kept hoping she’d mature over time. The character development was frustrating for me. To be honest I skipped 70% of this book and read the ending because I wanted to know what happened but didn’t want to waste anymore time on the series. It was the same shit in every book. I felt like I just continued to read the same story over and over and it got old fast.
I actually enjoyed Kat’s series more than I did the original trilogy. Kat and Nick just had the right kind of chemistry for me. My only peeve is Kat’s teenage hormones thing. It just wasn’t really believable, sure she may have them, but she also has plenty of years of experience to overwrite them. Other than that an interesting and original book series.
While reading through all these books I was very concerned with how things would end. Each book left me feeling a little lost and frustrated but still very interested in how things would work out. This last book was pretty epic and I thought the ending was perfect. Overall I loved the books and this last one was probably my favorite.
This started off a little slow in the sense that it was a "quest" storyline, but it definitely ramped up to an epic finish. This was a satisfying conclusion to the series, and I love the way in which Kat grew as a character throughout it.
It has potential and some interesting bits, but the TSTL quotient is enormous and draining.
If you do decide to read, read the echo series first, it explains A LOT of what’s going on that’s only brushed over in this one. You don’t have a full view of the world without those details.
It also gives the background of the ‘immortal teenager’ that Kat is, as most of this series is trying to justify a forty year old woman learning close to nothing in her last twenty years as an assassin of immortals. Seriously, this chick has the impulse control of a toddler on crack, and the the brains of a crushed peanut. She is continuously leaping into ridiculously situations with no thought to the fact that her actions hurt others (severely) and even puts the world at risk. She’s never seen a life lesson she couldn’t ignore and try to top!
A couple of highlights?
When she changed a random toddler into an immortal (to save him) and instantly knew what that maternal bond everyone talks about is and couldn’t possibly leave him... only to say in the next book that she is so bored and irritated at having absolutely nothing to do and being locked down for her own safety... and barely looking in the door to see the toddler who her older sister had swept up on his arrival... she needs to go sulk on the beach alone :(
When she forgets the universe saving stealthy infiltration of a bad guys castle to rush head first into an unknown situation because she heard the voice of her mum’s murderer. Yes, turns out he’s the bad guy. And yes, she knows that in the afterlife they are in, he can’t die, so all she can do is hurt him. And he has flunkies. So, oops, she and her BFF get caught and the bff is tortured for hours... did I mention they are currently in a thinkitanditsrealworld, and the only thing she could think of was a key that didn’t work, so sat by and watched her bff go thru HEAPS of god awful stuff, including having her back skin stripped. But woe is me... we is caught and chained and whatever could we do about it in this thinkitanditsrealworld? Anyway, they get out and she feels awful that her bad impulse control caused so much trauma to her bff, who grins and says ‘don’t mention it again’. Hmmm. And then a paragraph later, she ‘refuses to feel bad about going after the guy’ and ‘her brother was so wrong to not tell her the guy was there, because she could have planned her impulse lack sooner, because there’s no way she could be expected not to go after him while the universe is on the line’.
And while we are in the thinkitanditsrealworld, we will rarely ever think of things that could help us or save us or... you get the picture.
As for the true bonded relationship... I would have loved that to work, but yak. There was no connection between them. When they FINALLY got together at the end of book4, it ended, so there was NO relationship building. Then book5 started with him being awful, only to (no surprise) turn out to be bodysnatched (as per previous story) and not him at all. Then they are separated thru the rest of book5 & book6.
Once we FINIALLY get to the hea (for everyone), it’s wrapped up so fast, I got whiplash.
While the series started strong, I do not feel it ended that way. A large portion of that is tied to my increasing dislike for Kat. I spent all of the last two books frustrated with her-the constant screaming, crying, and general flying off the handle was wearing on me. W Her lack of any self control was irritating, and I didn't buy the fact it was tied to the fact she was stuck with the hormones of someone in their late teens. She's been alive long enough to know better and make some changes. The constant yoyo of emotions made them fall flat, so everything that happened in the last two books felt very contrived. People dying and her sacrifice...nothing. In fact, the whole sacrifice thing came off like she was wanting a pat on the back; instead, I wanted to tell her to stop whining. And god was there whining. The amount of drama Kat brings to the table is unreal.
Ultimately, I'd give this series slightly more than two stars. The world is interesting and you get some decent backstory, however the main character doesn't undergo a lot of personal growth IMO and the story ultimately feels too contrived in later books. It was kind of like it unravelled instead of amping up to a peak.
Well that was an amazing ride. Read all the books during my holidays and I enjoyed the story so much. I am already missing Kat and the clan, gosh!! I know the Nejerets' stories need to end but I want it to continue so badly. Loved it and still love it so much, I know deep down I'm gonna read the books again from the beginning with Lex. Thank you Lindsey for this amazing world you created.
The problem with writing a fictional universe so ambitious in scope as Sparks creates in her Echo Trilogy and this series is that the author has to set so many balls in motion it is impossible not to drop a few. In this book and in this series Sparks consistently chooses the big picture happenings over the relational and day-to-day things that sustain us and bring us joy. While giving lip service to the importance of those she loves as her motivation Kat Dubois remains a lone wolf to the end. With the possible exception of her brother Dominic we never get enough relational development between Kat and soul-mate Nik particularly and with others close to her to get any sense of partnership or team building. I found it increasingly tiresome living in her head and hard to care or believe in her as lover, sister, aunt, friend and hero. She existed to much in her own head and her actions too dependent on herself as well as too grandiose. Sparks did write a story that made me want to know how it turned out. Despite not getting the emotional satisfaction I would have liked I kept reading. That is an uncommon gift in a storyteller, but Kat is not a character who encourages connection, within the story (who would have thought that anything could reduce a character as unique and dynamic as Nik could be reduced in the final two novels to a mere prop) or without.
This series finished so fast. Didn't even have time to comprehend as to what a wonderful world and characters this series provided. I would've been happy for it were more than 200 pages as I believe the story was rushed because of the paging limit. But hey, am happy with what I got.
In this book KAT made very mature decisions all the time and none bad compared to the first book, it shows character development. Though she led vengeance get to her but I will ignore it cause it makes her a more reliable character. She was a fierce, intelligent, ass-kicking, humorous bitch. I really loved her character.
I did want more of KAT and NIK, again this falls in the short paging problem. Their romance was minimal and more than that it was spiritual too. I did love the trust between them.
The characters were perfect and trust worthy. The small knit family of KAT was best. Their trust and sacrifices regarding each other was something so powerful that even i wish I'll get to have a family like this. AMEN TO THAT!.
Overall this book and series are worth of your precious time. Do read it.
This last book is by far the most fantastical of the entire series. It invites you to completely suspend any concept you may have of reality. Kat has died once again and is off to more adventures in the land of the dead. She is reunited with her friend Mari but she is having severe withdrawals from Nik. With the help of her brother Dom she sets off in search of Isfet. There are scary creatures, evil Nejerets Kat and Mari have already killed but who don't stay dead and many other exciting elements in the story. It h impossible to predict how the story will end. Ms. Fairleigh keeps the suspense going to the very last page. Afterlife was an exciting book to read.
Probably one of the best thought-out of the Kat Dubois series. Yes, it’s a little challenging to get through the flighty teenage behavior and angst in the previous books in this series, but I think the character finally levels out the reactions in this book, not to say she doesn’t still think like a teenager, sometimes. This book tied in the backstory of the Echo in Time trilogy decently. This wasn’t necessarily my favorite one of the whole set (Kat Dubois & Echo) and it didn’t stun me to pieces like some books can, but it wrapped everything up just fine. Almost wish there was an Epilogue or some Dom side-story, because his character would be fascinating to follow.
Kat is Aaru to Isfet in order to find Isfet and to destroy the Mother of All before she can destroy the universe. Will she succeed and will they be able to save the universe?
The final book in the Kat Dubois Chronicles will keep you on the edge of your seat to see if the universe will be saved by Isfet and Kat along with the other Nejerets or destroy by the Mother of All. An excellent series selfless determination to save the universe and the people she loves from destruction by evil - through a young woman whose life wasn't easy growing up, but for those who show love and faith in her.
This series has been amazing to read. Starting with the Echo Trilogy and moving on to Kat's story. This book was by far the best! I cried during the last few chapters (no spoilers) and loved how it ended! I hope the author writes more about this world she's created! There are so many characters story I would love to read! But no matter what this tale she's written as been a great journey! I related to Kat on numerous levels, which made reading it that much more entertaining!
I loved this book from start to finish just as I loved all of the others. Again the writing was flawless and the characters were easy to love. I have read all of the Kat Dubois series and the echo series and I honestly say these are one of my favourite reads ever. Everything from the characters to the storyline to the description of each scene which was flawless and I honestly recommend these books. Lindsey Fairleigh is an amazing talented author who has quickly become one of my favourites and I can't wait to read more of her work!
What a great series! Of all of the fantasy fiction series I’ve read this one has been the most unique. Deeply steeped in Egyptian mythology, it combines modern day Seattle with magick, physics, and very well-developed characters and world-building (something I almost always comment on).
In this final volume we get to see all of the well-woven story lines come together seamlessly. Although I could see one portion of the conclusion from a mile... or a universe away, it was well-written and still a joy to read. This is a series I’ll definitely read again.
I loved Kat when I read the Echo Trilogy & I am so excited that she has her own series. I will say, I strongly suggest reading the Echo Trilogy before starting this series. It will give you some great backstory before diving into this own.
this is definitely an epic conclusion to Kay’s series. She has been through so much & has sacrificed in order to even have a slight chance to save her world.
Not going to give any spoilers, but this series of books was worth reading. The characters are human in their feelings and actions/reactions but so much more. I love Kat and Nik. I love Garth and his family. The fight that comes at the end of the series is epic. Loved them all, every book - in fact I'll probably read them again in a few months to catch the nuances that I missed first time round.
When the fate of the world rests in your hands you have vary little choice in what you decide. Kat has to venture into the world of the dead in order to save the world she knows and loves. The decisions she makes will leave you holding your breath and bitting your fingernails. Lindsey Fairleigh gave us the most intensely riveting conclusion to a series. Absolutely amazing must read!🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
The author has certainly done an amazing job if showing the growth, development, whatever you want to call it of one important soul and the Nejeret species. There were quite a few times when I wasn't sure if there was a solution, or when I expected the worst. I absolutely love Iusaset. I wish I could read more in this book verse, but this was an amazing conclusion if there isn't more.
Wow that was Fantastic! A fabulous conclusion to this part of Kitty Kat's story. Man this book had my heart racing throughout all the way to the end. This series is a creative, action packed story of Gods, Demigods and humans all working together in a way and what the higher powers are willing to sacrifice for the good of all. Great series, thoroughly entertaining read! I'm not sure if this is the end of Kat's story but I hope not!
An amazing series that I couldn't put down. But I now need more, it can't end like that, I want to know what happened with Garth? whats in the future for Nik and Kat? What about the twins? And Dom? What happens with Kimi and Nina and the rest of Garths family?? What happens with Reni and Bobby? Please let there be a novella that answers this, I'm hooked and need more
I waited till the last book to write this review. Each book made me more excited to see where this story would take me. With each chapter I became more invested in the characters and their story. While the MC Kat had her moments of doubt she reminds me how important it is to push forward even if you think you might not make it. What a fabulous ride through all of the emotions stirred up through Kat’s journey.
This book, as well as all of Lindsey Fairleigh's books, are a lot of fun to read. Interesting characters, story lines, the whole good vs evil thing, are woven together for a great story. I would recommend starting with the Echo Trilogy, then the rest, including the Kat Dubois Chronicles. I think you'll enjoy them.
I devoured this series! I almost didn't read it based on reviews I had read stating our heroine was 'too whiny'. I didn't find it to be true. Sure, Kat has her moments but with everything she faces, both past and present (and good gravy go ahead, add future) she's allowed those moments. I love Kat, Nik, Mari, Lex, Dom, Garth, Anapa, Mei.....
Pertaining to all the Kat Dubois Chronicles and Echo in Time series
These series draw you in. The characters developed over time growing with each story. The stories are interesting, and complex. They are filled with adventure, fantasy, romance and enough passion to make you warm. They are well paced, and hard to put down. I enjoyed them thoroughly.
Holy bejesus this series was so epic!! I cannot even say amazing enough things about it. This will be in my favourites pile forever. Brilliant universe, awesome characters, really engaging, loved the action, tension, suspense, character growth, just all of it! Do yourself a favour and read this series!
