Anxious and reclusive, Cora Blackthorn uses online gaming as her sole tether to the outside world. Due to a condition that makes human touch crippling, she lives her life confined to a small island in the Puget Sound, never accompanying her mother on her tomb-raiding adventures. But when her mom sends home a cryptic SOS in the form of a mysterious package, Cora discovers the shocking truth behind her extraordinary affliction. Her condition isn’t an illness; it’s a gift not of this world.

Armed with a powerful, alien amulet and her mother’s journal, Cora heads to Rome on a desperate rescue mission. But on the way, she discovers that a secret society is hot on her trail, and she has no chance of outrunning them. Her only chance is to confront them head on. A clash within the twisty catacombs beneath Vatican City leaves Cora with a perilous choice: find her way through an ancient, deadly labyrinth and save her mom, or fail and die…

Legacy of the Lost
(Atlantis Legacy #1)
by Lindsey Sparks (Fairleigh)
This is another book I really wanted to love but it was just ok. There was a missing mother and the gal was an alien. This is not a spoiler. This is upfront. The mission of the book was to get her mom back. She has help but she has to figure out where and what is going on.
Interesting at times and could be so much more!

Honestly just a wildly dumb book. At the start I was all about it - it looked like it was shaping up to be a solid B-grade adventure. But then it got worse. And worse. And worse. Think 'high school' level writing. It was a real push to finish it, and I definitely won't be reading the next in the series.

I was accepting of the fact this story was modelled upon the first Lara Croft film. But when the MC is made out to be this unique super-special other-wordly being desparately sought by the bad guys -- then why are the bad guy minions, when they're chasing her, shooting to kill?

The story has them wanting to study her, to use her powers -- and they're shooting bullets, not trancs? Just does not make sense. DNF 28%

R U N, don't walk....read this book NOW.

Oh my, oh my! I absolutely love each and every book by this author, but goodness gracious this book has me hooked! I've long since loved anything about Atlantis. This book is completely unique to anything I've read before. Cora is raised on an island by her archaeologist mother. Her entire life she's never left the island due to her condition. She can't touch anyone our she immediately falls unconscious and has an episode. Instead she lives through playing virtual reality games and nourishing her mind with languages, history and more. When her mother sends her a mysterious package while away on a trip, the last thing she expected was what she discovered. Cora is not only not biologically her mother's child, but was an embryo in stasis from an ancient Atlantean race that her mother carried to term. In the package were items her mother hoped would help her with her episodes. They did just that and more! If you LOVED Indiana Jones, Laura Croft, or DaVinci Code then this is the book for you. Ancient secrets below the Vatican, a group within of highly specialized people searching for Atlantean information that will stop at nothing to gain it and now her. Cora comes into her own and goes on the adventure of a lifetime! Be warned, it's not wrapped up in a neat bow and does end in a cliffhanger. I was cheering Cora on every step of the way among the crazy twists and turns! I cannot wait for the follow up book, and I dare you not to fall in love with this series!!

Ok here comes some real talk.

This book was shit! No, I didn't say it was THE shit. I said what I meant. It was terrible!
It starts out so promising but soon, I started wondering if a 12yr old wrote it.
"Why," you ask? Because! The whole book is a mashup of middle school interests. There're characters from Greek mythology, chaos crystals from Sonic the Hedgehog, hieroglyphics from Egyptian history mixed with Japanese characters and a mediocre retelling of your typical Lara Croft or Indiana Jones journey. The main character is a speaking, female version of Jake from my show Touch. The male lead was any man who just got home from the military.
Nothing was original. None of it. Like.... what was this? Poorly executed fan fiction? Idk. Screw this!

I really enjoyed this story once it picked up and the action started. At first I wasn't sure how it tied into the prequel, Sacrifice of the Sinners, but then we got more of Persephone, Hades and Demeter and it all made sense. The two stories were interwoven and explained why Cora had to live as a recluse for her 26 years since she couldn't stand to be touched. She lived her life through online gaming where she was able to build friendships without the fear of being touched.

It turned out that her knowledge of gaming and online friendships really helped when she became part of a game in real life. The story does have an Indiana Jones and Da Vinci Code vibe to it. There was lots of action, puzzle solving and a little romance that I hope builds in the next book.

I'm really looking forward to the next book!

What a fun, adventurous book! This story has Lindsey's signature writing style:

•Realistic fleshed out characters that are awesome!
•A plot with absolutely perfect pacing! (You won't be bored, trust me!)
•Action-adventure reminiscent of Tomb Raider with a completely original backstory thrown in!
•Romance- I cannot wait to find something out what will happen in the next book!

If you're a mood reader like me and you are in need of a new book, please give this book a go!

I picked this one up when it was free as it sounded like a good read. Then on a whim I started reading it, not quite knowing what to expect and got pulled into the story. I thought the first few chapters were a bit slow, but necessary as they set the stage and show what Cora's life is like until it all changes with a package her mother sent her. What follows is her learning a big secret about herself and having to come to terms with it while avoiding the enemies on her tail and trying to find her mom.

I haven't read any books quite like this. It has an unique mix of genres with the scifi element, but taking place mostly on modern day earth, it also has touches of mythology, plenty of adventure, there are puzzles and figuring things out as well as a touch of romance. It really was a great read and every time I picked it up I just wanted to keep reading. Every chapter ends in such a way that I wanted to know what came next. It was an exciting read with a good pace where things kept happening.

Cora gets quite the reveal about herself early on in the book, but I liked how she accepts most of it quickly enough and focuses on dealing with the current situation. I liked Cora and thought it was admirable how she dealt with it all. And while she seems to accept things quickly, she does struggle throughout the book with the truth about herself. I thought this was well done and felt realistic without slowing down the pace. She was an interesting character and I enjoyed reading about her. Her gaming background was fun and I liked how she used her gaming knowledge a few times in this book to solve puzzles.

I liked the plot and the way the plot seems to focus on finding her mother, but there's so much going on along the way as well and in a sense it feels just as much about Cora finding out more about herself and uncovering more information. I liked the puzzle and adventure vibe of this book, seeing Cora deal with every obstacle on her way was a lot of fun.

There's a hint of romance as well and I thought it was well done. It's part of the book, but stays a side plot with the focus on the plot. I liked seeing Cora grow close to someone and being able to touch someone for the first time as that wasn't possible due to her condition at first. I liked that they had known each other for a long time and how we get a feel for their history as well.

The world building was well done and sprinkled throughout the book. There's still a lot we don't know yet, but I like how we gradually learn more throughout the book. I though the mix of mythology and scifi was well done and I look forward to learning more. There were quite a few flashbacks/ memory scenes that played out, but I thought it worked well here for the most part.

To summarize: This was a great read, it's well paced with plenty going on. I liked the puzzle adventure packed vibe and seeing Cora deal with all the obstacles on her way on her quest to find her mom. This book is also in a large part about Cora finding out more about herself after a big reveal toward the end. I had a great time reading this book and wanted to keep reading. There's a bit of romance as well, which I thought was well done. I liked the friends to lovers vibe of their romance and they way things developed. The world building is interesting and well done. I already bought book 2 and I look forward to reading it!

*Thoughts*

Author Lindsey Fairleigh's Legacy of the Lost is the first book in the authors Atlantis Legacy sci-fi adventure series. If you like ancient mysteries, Greek mythology, treasure-hunting adventurers, and dynamic characters, then you’ll love this exhilarating adventure. I'd compare this story to Lara Croft meets Indiana Jones meets Stargate. 26-year old Cora Blackthorn is a prisoner of her own body and mind. Raised by her archaeologist mother Diana Crane, she’s rarely left the island due to her condition. Whenever she touches someone, she immediately falls unconscious.

The copy I read was unedited to the extent that I believe it was written text-to-speech and then published without even the writer checking for errors. What a disappointing first read of the new year.

Fun, adventure and Greek Gods. It’s the kind of book that helps you just have enjoyment and forget about the crazy stuff in our world. Nice ending also, I’m glad her mother is back to safety

Lindsey Sparks' "Legacy of the Lost" was predictable and slow to start; however the second half really picked up. Overall, it's an easy read and enjoyable enough. Also, it's a decent start to a larger series; there are enough questions answered while still leaving some hanging in the air to encourage continuing with the series.

I had problems with the pacing of the story. There were many parts I had to drag myself through, while other enjoyable parts were over too soon.

Sparks' writing style matches other books written for teenagers or preteens, despite her characters being in their mid to late twenties. The plot of this book had real promise to bring in some adult themes and really dig into the psychology of the protagonist, Cora, but Sparks barely scratched the surface of just how much depth this story could have had. Had she changed her focus toward writing for a younger audience or adjusted her own style and plot to fit with her desired young adult/adult audience, this book would have had more success.

This book only scratched the surface of its potential, and I think it could have delved deeper into some more mature themes in order to bring it before an older audience.

While I do have my critiques, the story was enjoyable enough - the second half more than the first - and I did enjoy reading through it and imagining what could have been done to elevate the story more.

Hey good-readers,

last month, after years of owning a cell phone, I somehow decided to click on the "Books" icon. Not sure how that happened, but I found myself browsing through books and "Legacy of the Lost" stood out. This is an amazing cover and amazing covers sometimes sell books. And darn, I'm not done with print books, but I may finally be getting into e-books... we'll see.

This is the first book I've read by Lindsey Sparks (Fairleigh) and I have only good things to say about it. The beginning of the book is extremely solid, with a mystery that kept me reading. The ending is satisfying. The ideas are original and there is a lot of potential here. Overall, I enjoyed Legacy of the Lost quite a bit. Recommended.

Mythology and Lost Worlds

You will be transported into a exciting and never ending adventure. This new series by Lindsey Fairleigh captured my interest and kept it to the last word. I cannot express enough how much fun I had reading this book. The library where the story starts and the tunnels under Rome are exquisite and took me to places I have been and only dream of being. Lindsey melds Greek mythology with the lost world of Atlantis. This series starts with great world building and, knowing Lindsey, will continue to grow stronger.

A lot will seem similar to other things you've read.. One sort of off putting thing was naming the non humans after mythological Greek or Roman gods (sorry can't recall which at the moment) which didn't, for me anyway, track with legends of Atlantis. A fun read non the less.

This is a great well written book of action, adventure, suspense, intrigue and from our standpoint supernatural elements that will hold your interest throughout your reading experience!

I highly recommend it to all who love adventure and archeological experiences as that is what this book is about. Cora is different and as such has lived in isolation most of her life with only three people really who are around her. Her mom is away on another archeological dig but then a package arrives from her to Cora and with a cryptic note and two items inside it Cora finds herself on a hunt to uncover what the message means and later on to discover just who and what she really is as well as finding her mom!
This book recounts the adventure she and her best friend have as they journey to Rome to find her mom and uncover the secrets of who and what she really is!

The story is a well written, fast paced adventure you’ll be glad you undertook as you’ll find you don’t want to stop reading it until it’s done. There are more adventures awaiting in this series and it’ll be an exciting ride I’m sure.

I know you’ll enjoy this story and it will probably make you wonder like it did me just what I’d do if I found out I was like Cora and who I really was. It’s a great story to read and enjoy!

A fantastic start to this series

Cora Blackthorn has been confined to her home living her life through online gaming, since kindergarten triggered a strange condition that makes being touched by others a painful experience until she blacks out from it. Her mum has been travelling the globe (like Lara croft raiding treasure troves) trying to find a solution to help her daughter. But when she recieves a package from her mum with a cryptic message she finds out she's not actually human but actually an Atlanean from a race that disappeared years ago.
After a secret society breaks into her house trying to kill her ,her mum's best friend sends her into hiding with her ex military son Raiden who Cora has had feelings for for years.
But Cora decides to go rescue her mum and they head to Rome where the parcel was sent from. This was a brilliant story, fast paced and plenty of thrills. I really enjoyed it.Now on to book 2 and I think I'm going to check out more of his author's books.

Cora discovers she's an alien after her mother disappears and send her a journal and a pendent. Cora learns that an ancient order is after her. She and her friend Raiden leave for Rome to search for her mother. They head to the catacombs where the order captures them and sends Cora into a labyrinth to retrieve alien technology. No one has ever returned from the labyrinth so Cora is afraid. During this time, she discovers that the pendent she wears is from Persephone and holds her consciousness. Cora learns that she is Persephone's reincarnation and that she was supposed to recieve the pendant when she was born to avoid having multiple minds. She finds the technology, but leaves it in the labyrinth choosing to not give it to the order and instead saves Raiden. She and Raiden then reenter the labyrinth.

This book would be good for middle school, high school, and any adult who enjoys sci-fi adventures. This book contains language and some violence that some readers may not like.

A fast paced story that takes us to Rome and through a world of myths and legends. Amazing new start to a series. The action, the locations, the characters, I can just imagine this as a show.

Make sure to read Sacrifice of the Sinners the prequel novella before this book (check out the author's website for a link)

Cora is a normal person, with wishes and dreams and wanting to do everyday things. But a mysterious illness keeps her bound indoors, where physical contact is limited. Any skin to skin contact causes incapacitating migraines, friendships and human comfort only causes pain. Her only escape is the online, virtual reality gaming world, where Cora has made some friends. But a letter from her mother is going to literally force her out of her comfort zone. She is going to need to face her fears and in her search for her missing mother, she might just find herself and a way of handling her migraines.

Full review: https://girlswithguns.org/legacy-of-t...

It is kinda interesting to see Cora develop over the course of the novel, but it just does not feel like a natural arc: at times, she feels like a meat puppet, not operating of her own free will. The inevitable romantic angle with Raiden feels dutiful rather than organic, and he's entirely abandoned for the final quarter of the book, having outlived his usefulness to the plot. There is a decent sense of place, with Sparks clearly having done her research regarding Rome, and when things are in motion, you do sense Cora being involved in a grand conspiracy beyond anything she could have imagined. Yet the clunky elements repeatedly derail this progress. I think the point at which I abandoned hope, was when Cora needed a detailed map of the Rome catacombs, and her online BFF, just so happened to have spent the past few years researching *exactly* this.
