Rate this book
At Karachi's prestigious Avicenna Hospital, the hostility between Dr Tanya Shah and Doctor Hammad Khan towards each other is hard to miss. With very different styles, the only similarity being excellence in their field, Tanya and Hammad have been rivals from the time they were med students. But the fight to outdo each other at school is nothing compared to the battle to the death which will ensue when they both go up for the top job at Avicenna. From the pen of a leading neurologist comes a heartstopping medical thriller about sexual politics, class, and the business of medicine set against a backdrop of one of the most violent cities in the world.

The book as the title suggests, follows the rivalry between two doctors, both excellent in their own fields and both belonging to different sexes. The cover of the book truly is representative of the nature of its content and as obvious, is set in a medical setting. Dr. Tanya Shah and Dr. Hammad Khan are excellent in their own respective fields and have vastly different ways of functioning and perceiving the world. They both have been arch rivals from the time they were med school students.

The plot follows the developments happening in Avicenna University Hospital, Karachi. The said hospital is one of the most prestigious hospitals of the country and offers excellent treatment opportunities with its dedicated and highly experienced team of doctors. Dr. Tanya and Dr. Hammad topping the list. Everything seems to be controlled until there is a job offering for one of the top positions in the University Hospital and as one would hypothesize, things were warming up and teeth clenched between the two top applicants, Dr. Tanya and Dr. Hammad. None of the two would let the other win and as the title cover suggests, “the battle of the sexes is about to draw blood”.

One is made to reflect on the state of gender divide that exists at present in all our lives and how subtly, it affects many. Women, who for the longest have been incorrectly been treated as second to men and inferior to men have now started to voice the truth in all its glory but there’s still a long way to go to bridge this divide and each and every entity must strive to achieve the same.

The plot of the book has mostly been well structured and the language, lucid. The expression of the lives of people through their activities has been illustrated well. The books keeps you hooked till the end and surely can be categorized as a page turner with its fast paced development and setting.

I picked up this book intrigued to see a doctor being its author; the plot seemed interesting too.
The first thing I noticed was that the chapters were titled... Seen that after quite a while... The font and size were comfortable to read. The flow of the story was easy to follow; vocabulary was quite good.
All the characters were introduced well; the hospital environment well depicted, particularly the anxiety of patients' relatives.
Although the rivalry actually came up quite late in the story, the race for the chair was well set up; the twist unexpected, viral social media correctly depicted and the story brought to a rounded closure.
Although I expected more of a pulsating story I kept turning the pages; I enjoyed reading in my local setting.
However, there were aspects I didnt quite like. The guys conversation was in bad taste... And needless to the story. I believe it was unnecessary for the story... It could have been "cleaner".
