“I’m sorry, Sskeer, but after everything we did. Everything we went through, there has to be a different way.”

My God, this was so shocking.

I swear, I feel like I expended the entirety of the time I was reading it with my emotions in a jumble because I was just not sure what was going on.

Though it was a lot of fun to piece what was going on together.

When I started the issue I thought it was gonna follow more of the events of The Rising Storm only to find out that it rather follows in the footsteps of Out of the Shadows, which is fine, but it was rather disconcerting. It does, however, hammer home the fact that we are entering a new point in the overall story, which is exciting and nerve-wracking.

Honestly, it was just a really thrilling and unexpected turn in the story. One that I'm sure is not going to bring anything good. But, well, the Jedi are known to make dangerous gambles in dangerous times.

I just have a bad feeling about this.

“There is always passion. It’s how we control it that matters.”

Umm, I'm really nervous to read this issue and, at the same time, I'm super hyped.

It's gonna be a difficult one, I think, with all the things it's gonna need to tackle but that only makes it all the more fun.

Marvel’s The High Republic has returned with another tense issue, as Keeve Trennis and Terec make the bold choice to go undercover to infiltrate the Nihil and uncover who the Eye of the Nihil really is. Some time has passed since the devastating attack during The Republic Fair on Valo and the plot is set following the events of Out of the Shadows and just before the events of Tempest Runner. (READ MORE: https://yourmoneygeek.com/review-marv...)

The Unified Republic Task Force, led in part by Stellan Gios, is at a loss for who the Nihil has named as the new Eye. While the readers know that Marchion Ro has been the Eye of the Storm since the era launched with Light of the Jedi, the Jedi and the Republic have been under the assumption that Lourna Dee was the Eye and following the Battle of Galov, they believe that she is dead.

Keeve and Terec’s risky decision to masquerade as two of Pan Eyte’s Tempests has the potential to be one of the best story arcs in The High Republic comics thus far. Throughout Marvel’s The High Republic series, Keeve has openly struggled with her place within the Jedi Order, she has faced the temptation of the Dark Side, and now there is an opportunity to see how the Republic — and the Jedi — are perceived by their enemy. Every villain sees themselves as a hero and the Nihil are steadfast in their opposition to the tactics of the Republic’s overreaching ruling.

We see this right at the start of the issue, as Keeve corrects herself “Not a crusade [against the Nihil]. Get the response right, Keeve. Part of the response.” But we know, from the outside, that the Jedi’s response to the Nihil is very much a crusade. After all, crusades are fueled by social, political, or religious intent.

At the end of the issue, Keeve and Terec have proven themselves as Tempest Runners worthy of being under Pan Eyta, but the testing is not yet over. In the final moments, Keeve worries about having to abandon everything it means to be a Jedi in order to endure these tests. Knowing that when we first met Keeve back in January, she was going through her Jedi Trials, and now all that she knows is being tested is a true testament to how well thought out The High Republic is. The narrative arcs connect together so meticulously, weaving an incredible story filled with struggles, introspection, and a cast of characters seeking to understand themselves under intense pressure.

We know, more or less, that something tragic will eventually happen to Keeve Trennis once she reaches the rank of Master. Whether the events at play in the present will have an impact on her future or if they will inform us as to where her story is headed are still unclear, but it makes for an absolutely epic and unforgettable journey to get there.

The High Republic #9 sets off a fast-paced new story arc. In this issue, the twists and turns don't come to a halt, and the story moves forward at an enormously fast pace. The narrative structure, which has Cavan Scott playing on two timelines as he recently did in Tempest Runner, works great in the comic medium and, as always, keeps us rooting for the characters until the very last page and beyond. A little more rest wouldn't have hurt this issue, as many conflicts were only touched upon for now, and events from the novels were only barely mentioned. As the beginning of a new story arc, however, this makes sense, as it leaves enough questions for the characters to still be confronted with. Drawing-wise, this issue is once again a highlight and the coloring and the appearances of previously unseen characters are amazing. As for me, I am now extremely curious of what decisions Keeve will have to make and how far she will have to part from the teachings of the Jedi to act as a believable Nihil ...

High Republic #9 Review
High Republic #9 delivers in every way. Timeline wise, this takes place post The Rising Storm, Out of the Shadows, and after part of Tempest Runner. If you have not seen all of these things, I recommend you do not read this review.

The comic bounces a good amount from the past to the present. We start out by seeing Nihil Keeve and Teret chasing down Orla in her ship. We then jump back to the past seeing the main people on Starlight talking to Council Member Gios. I love the attention to detail here from the art team. You can see that his hair and beard are longer, and his eyes are baggier. Just like he was described in Out of the Shadows.

Now here is where some conflict starts. Stellan brings everyone up to speed about the attacks the Jedi have performed against the Nihil. They also bring up the The Battle of Galov. This takes place at the beginning of Tempest Runner. They discuss how Lourna is dead and they don’t know who the new Eye is. Starlight’s chief of security says they have heard chatter that the Nihil are gathering in the Soola system. Stellan brings up how they have swept the system multiple times, and then Avar goes full on brutal. She brings up how they also swept Valo and look what happened.

He doesn’t want to risk it, and Keeve interrupts. More chaos and such. I won’t spoil anything more.

I loved seeing more Stellan this issue. This is the first time he and Avar have actually had some dialogue so far. It is a shame how things are so icy between those two. Stellan is clearly wracked with guilt. Struggling with PTSD from the attack and the stress and pressure of the entire galaxy on his shoulders.

The art as I said is amazing. Ario does an amazing job, like always. We also get a first look at some things. We see Zeetar for the first time. I have to admit, he looks nothing like I imagined. We also see Orla’s ship for the first time and the Ataraxia. Now all we need is Elzar in comic form.

The one issue I have with the comic is not really with the comic itself. It’s that it is so good, it sucks how the next issue doesn’t come out till near the end of October.

Overall rating: 9.5/10

Given that we know that Keeve Trennis ultimately becomes one of the Lost Twenty Jedi who left the Order, it was rather disconcerting to see her in the captain’s chair of a Nihil Stormship. Had she left the Order between issues? What had happened? But a quick flashback revealed it to be a Jedi plot to infiltrate the Nihil…although one has to wonder if it’s the first step on her path to leaving the Jedi.

This is cracking stuff from start to finish. Although, I have to say, I’m currently reading the novel The Rising Storm, also written by Cavan Scott, and this issue contains several spoilers for events in that novel…but that’s just one of the risks you run when consuming a cross platform story such as this. I just can’t stay as up to date with the novels as I am with the comics. That said, it certainly hasn’t spoiled my enjoyment of this comic or the novels, but your mileage may vary so consider yourself forewarned.

All in all I’m loving how interconnected the comics and novels are, with neither medium really taking priority over the other when it comes to major events happening. While you could definitely read one without the other, reading both definitely leads to a much richer experience.

The writing here is superb, and we’re definitely starting to feel the benefit of all the groundwork and character development Scott has been doing. The art is also superb and Keeve looks awesome as a Nihil…both inside the book and on Phil Noto’s stunning cover.

This is another great addition to the High Republic and I really can’t recommend it enough.

”What if he’s wrong, Marshal? What if we’re all wrong? What if we should be doing more?”

After the disaster on Valo, the Jedi, including those posted on Starlight Beacon, are tracking down and destroying Nihil outposts and fleets all around the galaxy. Keeve Trennis, hellbent on bringing the Nihil to justice, is on a special mission, one that might cost her everything.

I'm so pumped about this new arc. I have a feeling it will be intense, insane and emotional. This issue was very much a setup issue: we were introduced to the new storyline, given a bit of context for where the characters are emotionally and what the situation is for Jedi in general at the moment. Keeve is a great character and I can't wait to see where this new arc will take her. It's cool seeing how she still struggles with her emotions and acting like a "proper jedi", and how far she is willing to go to protect the galaxy from the Nihil who have recently caused the deaths of thousands on Valo. I'm also intrigued to see more of the inner workings of the Nihil, as I'm still not super into them as an organisation.

One small thing that I really loved in this issue was the interaction between Stellan Gios and Avar Kriss. I love the trio of Avar, Elzar and Stellan, but we haven't seen a lot of Avar and Stellan together. But in this issue you can see how close they are, cause though they are, for the most part, quite formal with each other in public, they have absolutely no problem quarrelling and debating in front of others, and challenging each other. I think the way they act speaks of a very close bond.

Can't wait for issue 10!

I read this one a while ago, but goodreads didn't have the entry ready on their site for me to review.

I am working to catch up on the High Republic content that I have missed thus far in preparation for The Fallen Star, so I've got some comics to plow through.

Kicking off the third story arc of Cavan Scott's High Republic comic series, this ones ok. It has pretty much the same strengths and drawbacks that the previous arcs had. I still don't like the internal monologues with Keeve Trennis, I think some of the lines would have been more impactful if Cavan Scott didn't use the device in every other panel (which in my eyes, is too much). The artwork is still solid, but not as gorgeous as it was in previous volumes.

Pretty good start for the new arc.

The new arc kicks off with a fast-paced story that promises and i couldn't be happier. A bold move coming from the Jedi, especially taking in account who came up with the plan. But i loved it.

It's always nice to see more Sskeer, my man is almost healed up and i can't wait for him to go berserk again (in a good way, not to lose control).

Overall: I liked the start of this new arc, they're not holding back and that ending was a good one.

"It was okay / I liked it." - 2.5 out of 5 star rating, with a round up to a 3.

Initial contact makes you miss the Drengir arc to the left of this and how much fun that was. This Nihil deal certainly has a tough act to follow.

I was hard leaning on 2-stars until the very end on this one, where a really intriguing cliff hanger was dropped and really got me thinking/wanting to know what will happen next and saved the day for the review score here in the very last panels.

I was confused at first....... but Keeve and Terec going undercover as Nihil??? Let's goooo!!

And just for a side note, I haven't read the other High Republic stuff aside from this comic + Trail of Shadows and oh boy, Stellan Gios has been grating at me with his political yadas... Luckily, Keeve has Marshal Avar on her side.

Wow, what an incredibly interesting change of events for Keeve! I feel like this undercover plan will be equally helpful and challenging, as we already start to see here at the end. I only hope this plan works out better for the High Republic council and Keeve than it did for the council with Quinlan Voss is Dark Disciple!

This was a really interesting issue. I can't wait to read the next issue! I LOVED how they talked about if it's ok to do something against your belief if it meant saving someone or the world and they also talked about that in Mandalorian S2!
