In this boxset, you'll laugh out loud with Gladie through the first three books in the Matchmaker Mysteries series: An Affair to Dismember, Citizen Pain, and The Wizard of Saws. Come find out just what kind of trouble Gladie gets herself into.
An Affair to Dismember: Three months has been Gladie Burger's limit when it comes to staying in one place. That's why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her Grandma Zelda-who is more than a little psychic-- recruits her into the family's matchmaking business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. What's more, Gladie is also highly unqualified, having a terrible track record with romance. Still, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has her clairvoyant "gift." But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.
When Zelda's neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family's drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation,
Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor's death was murder. It's not too long before she's in way over her head-with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she's unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued-either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?
Citizen Pain: Lovably troublesome Gladie Burger runs into sizzling danger and a fiery love triangle in the second installment of Elise Sax's hilarious and sexy Matchmaker Mysteries series.
Since joining the family matchmaking business run by her eccentric and psychic Grandma Zelda, Gladie is always looking for love. But when an unbearable toothache knocks her out of commission and into the dentist's chair, she prays only for relief. No such luck. Emerging from an anesthetic haze, Gladie awakes to find that not only is her tooth still throbbing, but her dentist is dead--and the lead suspect in the murder, office receptionist Belinda, just so happens to be Gladie's first real client. Now it's up to Gladie to find Belinda a man and keep her from being locked up behind bars.
As if that weren't enough distraction, two gorgeous men are vying for Gladie's attention: Spencer, the playboy chief of police, and Holden, Gladie's secretive, gorgeously muscled neighbor. Still, Gladie's not complaining about having a helping hand or two when the case leads her to a dangerously bizarre cult. She may have met her match--and if she's not careful, it could be her last.
The Wizard of Saws: Five months have passed since Gladie Burger came to Cannes, California, to join her eccentric Grandma Zelda in the family matchmaking business, and Gladie is quickly mastering the rules of attraction. Her latest fix-up is still going strong and Gladie's bank account is back in the black--until a rival matchmaker arrives in town and has both Gladie and Zelda seeing red.
Not only is self-proclaimed psychic Luanda Laughing-Eagle stealing Grandma Zelda's clients, but Zelda is convinced that Luanda's ESP is total BS. She tasks Gladie with exposing Luanda as a fraud, but Gladie's attention is diverted when murder comes a-calling. Spencer Bolton, the gorgeous chief of police and Gladie's on-again, off-again flame, wants her to stay out of the investigation--and away from the deliciously chiseled detective who also aims to win Gladie's heart. But the one thing Gladie's learned is that in business, love and murder . . . it's always personal.
Elise Sax worked as a journalist for fifteen years, mostly in Paris, France. She took a detour from journalism and became a private investigator before trying her hand at writing fiction. She lives in Southern California with her two sons. An Affair to Dismember is her first novel.
Elise Sax has set a new bar for comedic mysteries. Humor burst forth from almost every page. Not the brittle, forced kind but the real laugh out loud kind. The mystery part is also well thought out and developed. Throw in some romance and you have a great read. The characters are different from each other and interesting . I'd love to spend some time with them in real life.
This three book series is the introduction to the matchmaker series. Gladie Burger has joined her grandmother’s matchmaking business in Cannes California. Each of the books can be read as standalones but much better to follow the madcap series. I thoroughly enjoyed these three books and look forward to reading more from this author.
I have to confess, I laughed so hard my stomach muscles hurt. I had tears running down my face. Yes I felt like an idiot but the author is a genius writing dialog. The characters are so earnest which makes the situations they find themselves in even more fun. I now will have to finish the series and I'm looking forward to the trip!
4 stars overall rating to the three books. I didn’t liked the first one but I still kept reading lol this series has its own charm ngl. Read it for weeks coz I was busy and sometimes I don’t want to read but it is still a quick read. I got confused at the second book’s ending tho, it says Holden but it’s actually Spencer?? It could be from my lack of sleep but I did a double take and got more confused. I got no conclusion of Luanda in the third book. Did she go to prison? Did the failed matches got a refund? Idk if I will read the other books, just got this for free on amazon. Gladie looks like she smells but at least she can do a better job than the cops. The series is turning to be a reverse harem, but Holden ftw! He can literally kiss someone with morning breath and cavities. Cumberbatch can get it tho, but he’s not that appealing.
I literally forgot Holden’s real name.
This is my lengthiest review on goodreads…so far.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved these books. The sly give and take between characters. Gladie is amazing (except for the high school dropout, but that was understandable considering her mother; oh and the non-reader thing.) Which I am not, I am a voracious reader. But I have been out of reading for a while, but back at it with these books. Oh, back to my review. The laughter and terror I couldn't put the book down (or actually, close my tablet). And of course, the lovely tingly thing that it's doing to my nether regions. I ripped through the first three in a matter of days. And was thrilled to discover there were more books in the series. And quickly bought 2 more then 7 more. I can't put them down. Oh so good. And I even forgot to eat a few times, and for me that's saying something (I'm kinda like Gladie in that respect)
I honestly had zero expectations when I started to read Matchmaker Mysteries. I thought I knew what awaited me because I have read a lot of books like this. Books where the protagonist is a civilian turned sleuth and they are usually pretty easy to predict, but I am woman enough to admit when I was wrong.
These books had me laughing out-loud and questioning my own sleuthing skills.
Elise Sax has created a great series for people that love a fun mystery with lots of crazy characters and funny but sometimes embarrassing situations.
The only downside is the twist in the last few paragraphs in the wizard of saws. I hope it won’t turn down the rating for the next book. I will give you an update when I am finished with “Field of Screams”.
I enjoyed all 3 books. Loved the mystery, love interests and confusion about who she would finally have sex with. The match making was fun and never boring. It was interesting and I was able to identify with the excitement, mystery, and not being able to figure out who the bad guys were. This author is very good. I will look for more of her match making mysteries with Gladie, her grandmother, friends, and love interests. I love how she kept me off balance throught out each book.
I really enjoyed these books! I laughed, I giggled, I snorted and I smiled an awful lot! My husband had snippets read to him throughout! I'd read the first book before and enjoyed it, but reading books two and three immediately after was fabulous. I love Gladie and her love life that appears to go so far, but not far enough (until book 3)! Holden, Spencer and Remington - 3 drop dead gorgeous men, all interested in Gladie, but who will announce his love first? I can't wait to read the next book! A fabulous read, with such great titles!
The three books were hilariously funny. Each character had so many quirks it was hard to take them seriously, which I suppose was the point. I mean, they were all SO eccentric, but that's what made it so funny. Not to mention all the love interests for a matchmaker that has a hard time making matches. I just rolled with the craziness and laughed along as the craziness happened. I mean a flying donkey, really?
Meh, not going to look up the rest of these tales, not enough to keep in interested. Although the last tale offered a great and unusual puzzle the author didn'tgive enough clues so anyone could guess the actual outcome. At least the heroine didn't get caught alone with the murderer, but she did wind up with her pants off feeling guilty. A really good story doesn't need a chapter on sex to keep it interesting.
Interesting characters. I would like to see more of Grandma Zelda. Lots of male interest/eye candy. Wonder who they would cast for the love interests, if this were made into a movie or tv series. Cute premise for a solid cozy mystery series. A little more sexed up than most cozies. Fun interactions between the chief of police and Gladie. Ruth is a pistol. The two best friends are wildly different but fun, feisty, and loyal.
I'm tempted to give these four stars, but that's really because they just perfectly hit the spot for me right now. If life is stressful and hard, consider this is a four star review. It's actually incredibly hard to toe the line of silly but not too silly, and these books succeed. They are pure light-hearted, just silly enough entertainment, the perfect antidote to stressful times. I will be reading more.
I'm still trying to figure out why I bothered to read all three. Eternal optimist, perhaps?
I don't like Gladie. She's proud of her lack of education (and knowledge), and her inability to hold a job, while panting over any well-built male. The other characters are caricatures. I honestly hoped there would be something in Spencer or Holden that might make Gladie see life through adult lenses, and after three books, no longer have that hope. I wanted an answer - about anything - and got none.
The three stories were rather fun, but not very challenging. I do have a beef with the heroine constantly talking about how much weight she has gained though...that gets a bit annoying after a while.
Not sure if I'd read more in this series or not, depends if the price is right or not! Enjoyable but not a must read for me.
It's an amazing, hilarious, adorable and cute collection of awesome cozy mysteries. Gladys Burger has a knack of finding dead bodies but manages to flush out the murderer with her investigation along with her trusted sidekicks, Lucy and Bridget. It's a laugh a riot cozy mystery.
Reading Elise Sax is like skiing for the first time while being handcuffed to your crazy best friend who’s on crack by accident.
Everyone is going in different directions, the main character is a turbo charged pinball, and her friends are certifiable. Really, it’s best not to think very hard about the books. Just hang on and enjoy the ride.
Quirky murder mystery books linked to romantic pairings by Granma. Gladys is helping out her Grandma with her business of pairing up couples, trouble is she keeps getting tangled up in murders. Sounds fairly straight forward until you get to meet the other characters, then you won't know whether to laugh or cry.
I love these books, they are laugh out loud funny. The characters are eccentric, obsessed, amusing and wonderfully written. Bridget's phone calls in the third book are hysterical. I can't wait to read the next book.
My first time reading of this author. The stories were great each chapter and book just kept me wanting more. Always another twist and turn and I love the "love interests" in her life. A fun read and I will be looking for more.
Absolutely brilliant what a laugh the bit in the new police station and the donkey had me laughing out loud, the whole premise of the story was a sheer joy to read and all the characters were lovable and I cared about all of them just brilliant
They all had every emotion and some you didn't even realize existed.Match makers &those who separate, love & hate, good & bad you never know what the next paragraph would bring. Download and enjoy you won't be sorry!
I really enjoyed reading these stories from Elise Sax. Such fast paced, funny, unexpected happenings. Can't wait to find more from her. Loved all three!
Loved this trilogy. Elise Sax is a fantastic author. Kept in suspense till the last chapter, also very funny. Can't wait to read more of Elise Sax books.
