Whitaker wrote in a wide variety of genres, achieved bestseller status, and published under several other names, as well, including Nicholas Seare, Beñat Le Cagot, and Edoard Moran. Başından sonuna farklı bir kitap Katya'nın Yazı. Trevanian'ın ne kadar yetkin bir yazar olduğunu suratınıza çarpıyor bu farklılık. Klasik bir aşk öyküsü gibi görünen yönünde bile farklı tınılar var. Doktor Montjean ile Katya arasındaki bağ, aşkın basit bir sunumu değil. O şok edici sonu olmasa bile çok güzel ve gizemli bir aşk bu. Okuyanı kendi geçmişine sürükleyecek kadar etkili.
Hızı hiç kesilmeyen bir anlatım hakim kitaba. Tek bir noktasında bile sıkılmıyorsunuz. Hikayenin arkasından kendini belli belirsiz gösteren gizem, heyecanı sürekli diri tutuyor. Bir kendinizi bıraktınız mı tadından yenmeyecek harika diyaloglar var.
Karakterler o kadar kuvvetli ki zihinde canlandırmak için hiç çaba sarf etmiyorsunuz: Montjean, Katya, Doktor Gros, Paul, bay Treville ve hatta Bask festivalindeki delikanlılar, kızlar. Hepsinin hislerini duyabiliyor, zihinlerini okuyabiliyorsunuz. Bunları birinci tekil şahıs anlatıcıyla okura yansıtmak her yazarın harcı değil bana kalırsa.

Kitapta yer alan özdeyiş kıvamındaki cümleler ise zevkinizi katlayacak. Tabi bu güzel cümlelerin harika çevirisi için çevirmeni de anmak gerek: Belkıs Çorakçı Dişbudak, zihni dert bulmasın, harika çevirmiş kitabı; sarkan, tökezleyen bir cümle bile yok.

I always approach late 70's/early 80's fiction (especially if it comes with stark covers with big words and little-to-no ornamentation) with trepidation. Somewhere in the back of my mind I am always imagining these to have been written by some slightly-tubbied, largely-moneyed, grossly-mustachioed, tinted-glasses-wearing-cigar-smoking-Playboy-reading-middle-aged white dude.
They never are.
With little to go on besides a tacky cover and an excited “romantic thriller” designation, I admit it was my amusement at the one-word author appellation (Travanian!) that pushed me past my caution. I was sincerely expecting douchebaggery.
Once again, I'm happy to say that my (patronizing) preconceptions were wrong.
The SoK ended up being one of those stories that flirts with a handful of genres without ever committing to one exclusively. It starts slow and feels like a fictional memoir, a “last steps toward adulthood” type of tale. Our main dude Jean-Marc is recounting his first summer as a full fledged Doctor, apprenticing in a small town to a colorfully quirky mentor, still flush with his own innocence, arrogance and dreams.
As Jean-Marc is a writer in his spare time, in love with the idea of art and embracing his fascination with the workings of the inner mind, we assume that this is going to slide into some dramatic reflection of the upcoming war (wwII) and how it contrasted with this last idyllic and innocent summer.
But then our rock-star Trevanian introduces Katya, and it becomes an intriguing romance. Her innocence and her family's reclusiveness add an element of curious mystery that starts fresh but darkens as the summer deepens.
And Jean-Marc's innocence is suddenly ruined before we expected, as Mystery quickly becomes Thriller and then Tragedy. This all happens smoothly rather than ditheringly and the progression feels remarkably natural. There is a notably considerate treatment of mental health issues and the effects of trauma that is worth mentioning.
The Summer of Katya was a quietly impacting and engrossing read. A nice surprise.

As formative as Shibumi (and Trevanian) have been for me, I realized just a few days ago that I hadn't read another Trevanian novel and set about changing that. Out of sheer randomness, I chose The Summer of Katya -- and was not disappointed at all.
Having been away from Trevanian's writing for so long, it was brisk and rewarding to find again his incisive, edgy, but always well-crafted writing. I had trouble putting the book down, and the equivalent of 288 pages on my Kindle melted away in less than a week.
Trevanian's austere world-view bites even more than when I read Shibumi many years ago, but his characters and his latent love of Basque life are rich rewards for your time. It's hard for me to stop thinking about this elegant love story.

A wonderfully written book. Trevanian’s narration of the story as it unfolds leaves the reader in suspense and anxious to find out what the Treville’s secret is about. His vocabulary and use of words is outstanding. The writing and point of view of the characters is like no other books that I have ever read. Very well written indeed.
Jean-Marc Monjean, a recently medical school graduate takes a position as a doctor’s assistant in a small French Basque village of Sallies. The time is in the summer of 1914. One afternoon as Jean-Marc enjoys a sunny day in the park, a young lady approaches him and demands that she attends to her twin brother’s broken arm. Jean-Marc fascinated by Katya, the young lady, agrees to it and goes with her to her home. There he meets the brother Paul Treville and her father. Jean-Marc becomes involved with the family, and attends dinners, parties and outings.
As the days go by Jean-Marc falls in love with Katya deeper and deeper. But he also finds out that the Trevilles have a secret, that haunts them and forces them to leave the village. Jean-Marc is determined to convince them otherwise, and even though he is warned by Katya’s brother, that she is vulnerable and shouldn’t get hurt by his affections, Jean-Marc decides to have a meeting with her, prior to them leaving. What he finds out is shocking to him and to the reader. Up until the end the reader has no clue what the outcome of this meeting might be, and what is considered to be a romantic novel, becomes a psychological thriller.

Trevanian tanışmam uzun seneler önce Şibumi ile olmuştu, sonra neden bilmem diğer eserlerini hiç merak etmedim, zira Şibumi tam anlamıyla tamamdır dedirten yapıtlardan bence.
Neyse efenim, ben seneler sonra sahaf tezgahında Trevanian 'a rastlayınca okumak farz oldu. Kendime çok kızdım, nası böylesi güzel okumalardan mahrum bırakmışım kendimi.
Katya' nın Yazı, tam bir romantik novella gibi başlıyor, hatta bence ilk başlardan bu ne yahu diyerek kitabı bırakmak bile isteyebilirsiniz. Fakat sabırlı olun, dantel gibi işlenmiş şahane bir kurgu ve su gakan diyaloglar gelmekte.
Delilik ile akıllılığın arasındaki ince çizgide cambaz gibi bir o yana bir bu yana bizi götürüp duruyor yazar. Bu esnada duygularımızı da topaç gibi savuruyor.
Muazzam bir anlatım.

A friend introduced me to this writer, I must admit I have never heard of him before and I think I will read more of his books.
This was a quick and exciting read.
I started of thinking it will be yet another story of a cruel, possessive brother and a sister who can't get away because she is torn between her love for her brother and the burning desire for her lover and somehow she can't have both (a cliche by now I am sure) but because I did not know what to expect at all, I was pleasantly surprised with everything that was thrown at me as a reader: interesting characters, good writing, lots of suspense (a real page turner), some mystery - a kind of psychological thriller at its best where everything gets tied together nicely at the end.
And it did not bother me at all that around the middle of the book - I did see it coming!
And there were some beautiful and witty passages worth remembering:
"Ah yes, write. For at that time in my life I felt capable of everything. Having attempted nothing, I had no sense of my limitations; having dared nothing, I knew no boundaries to my courage. During the years of fatigue and dulling rote in medical school, I had daydreamed of a future confected of two careers: that of the brilliant and caring doctor and that of the inspired and inspiring poet. And why not? I was an avid and sensitive reader, and I made the common error of assuming that being a responsive reader indicated latent talent as a writer, as though being a gourmand was but a short step from being a chef." (love this one)
or
"It was, of course, the accuracy of his evaluation that irritated me. We all desire to be understood, but no one enjoys being obvious. I am afraid my annoyance was not well concealed, for he smiled in a way that told me he took pleasure in baiting me."
or
"There was a café frequented by the lady patients, as it offered a thin pallid liquid that claimed to be English tea (then quite fashionable) served with small cakes which, as they were dry and tasteless, were assumed to be quintessentially British. I suggested that we take some refreshment there, after her long walk."
or
"I realize that your intentions are of the best. You lack the imagination required to be genuinely evil."

Plot twist yüzünden yorum yazması çok zor bir roman. Adının da etkisiyle yaz aşkını anlatan bir roman okuyacağımı düşünüyordum. Aslında böyle de başladı. Doktor Montjean’dan dinliyoruz hikayeyi. Aşk hikayesi ortalamaydı. Katya’nın gizemli ailesi hikayeyi ilginç kılan unsurdu.
Katya, ikiz kardeşi ve babasıyla bir kasabaya yerleşiyor. Kasabaya geliş nedenleri üzerine çeşitli dedikodulara konu oluyorlar. Montjean aşık olduğu için uzak duramıyor ve olaylar gelişiyor. Montjean Katya’yı tanıdıkça ailenin çeşitli sırları ortaya çıkıyor. Normalde aynı konunun birçok çarpık versiyonunu okumayı sevmem. Yazarın kurguda aksaklık yaşadığı için bir yan yola saptığını düşünürüm. Trevanian bu hissi uyandırmadan başarılı bir şekilde aile hikayesini tekrar tekrar anlatıyor.
Romanın son çeyreğini büyük hızla okudum. Gittiği yeri tahmin edemedim. Kişilik bölünmeleri ile alakalı en iyi kurgulardan biri. Kadının toplumdaki konumu ve aile bağları üzerine çok çarpıcı bir romandı. Bunu da yormayan, akıcı ve hafif bir dille yapması en hoşuma giden şey oldu. Daha önce birer polisiye roman ve öykü kitabını okuduğum Trevanian’dan beklemiyordum. Okuduklarım alaycı tonda yazılmış kitaplardı. Katya’nın Yazı’nda da akademisyenler ve edebiyattaki çeşitli klişelerle alay etse de romanın güçlü bir anlatımı olduğunu düşünüyorum.
“Biz ne de olsa nüfuzlu bir aileyiz. Adalet belki kördür ama sosyal ağırlıklara karşı duyarsız da değildir. Fakirlere sorular sorulur, söylediklerinin kanıtları aranır, zenginlerin ise ifadeleri kayda geçer, yalnızca imla hatası yapılmamasına dikkat edilir.”

Katya'nın Yazı benim için Trevanian ile tanışma kitabı oldu, okurken eski ve "büyük" romanları hatırlatan bir tat aldım, bu beni mutlu etti...
Ağustos 1914, I. Dünya Savaşı'nın arifesinde yeni mezun doktor Jean-Marc küçük bir kasabada çalışmaya başlar, Katya ile tanışırlar ve arkadaşlıkları hızla aşka dönüşür. Katya'nın erkek kardeşinin tavırlar�� ve kasaba halkının dedikoduları ise Jean-Marc'ı huzursuz etmeye başlar…
Çok şaşırtıcı bir son bizi beklediği için daha fazla anlatmak istemiyorum. Ancak Trevanian'ın anlatımını çok sevdim. Olayları, karakterleri, duygu ve düşünceleri başarıyla resmediyor. Romanın bir bir aşk hikayesi gibi başlayıp, zamanla gizeme ve trajediye dönüşmesi, ayrıca kadının toplum içindeki yerinden başlayarak sosyal ve sınıflar meseleleri irdelemesi hoşuma gitti. Büyük savaş öncesi havayı ve savaşın getirdiği yıkımı anlatan kısımları etkileyici buldum…

Kitabı bitireli ne kadar süre geçerse geçsin etkisinden asla kurtulamayacağımı ve inatla etrafımdaki insanlara tavsiye etmeyi sürdüreceğimi düşünüyorum. Yazarın diğer kitaplarından “İnfazcı” ve “Şibumi”yi de okudum, çok beğendim, fakat bu kitabın yeri bende artık apayrı olacak.

I thoroughly enjoy my french-word-a-day.typepad.com site. Blogger Kristin Espinasse mentioned The Summer of Katya as a good read, I trust her judgement so I ordered it through my library's interlibrary loan program. The book came in today, I picked it up late afternoon and read it in one setting. Difficult to put down, the novel was chillingly haunting - psychological thriller comes to mind, with the rather unanticipated nightmare of an ending. The glimpse into the Basque culture during a festival scene is intriguing. France has tons of festivals. I was curious as to The Festival of the Drowned Virgin in the village of Alos as described in the book. Thanks to the world of googling ... the historical events leading to the festival really did occur in 1170 in the southwestern village of Sauveterre de Bearn. I wonder if there really is a festival as such? Probably. I can't wait to seek out some more of Trevanian's works, although I understand they are all different as can be, one from the other.
On a sidenote, The Basque History of the World by Mark Kurlansky is a good read to immerse onself in the Basque culture.

Klasik bir roman gibi başlayan, sonrasında aşk kitabı mı acaba dedirten, biraz daha ilerlediğinizde ise gerilime dönüşen, sonunda ise sizi hiç beklemediğiniz bir yerden etkileyen, eşsiz kitaplardan biriydi.

Bu sefer kahramanımız Jean Marc Montjean isminde yeni mezun Basklı bir doktor. Olaylar 1914 yılında, bir Bask kasabası olan Salies'de geçiyor. (Bask bölgesi yazarın olmazsa olmazlarından) Aslında biz doktorla bahsettiğimiz olaylar geçtikten 25 yıl sonra tanışıyoruz. Orta yaşının neredeyse sonlarındayken, yaşananların üzerinden bir dünya savaşı ve koca bir ömür geçmişken ve hatta bir sonraki dünya savaşı da kapıdayken. Bize yıllar önce, o yaz başından geçenleri anlatıyor. Katya'nın yazında olanları.
Katya, babası ve erkek kardeşi, Paris'teki lüks hayatlarını bırakıp Salies'de eski bir ev kiralamışlar ve geldikleri günden beri de kendilerine dönük, içe kapalı bir hayat yaşamaktadırlar. Tabi bu durum dedikoducu yerel halkın merakını oldukça çekmektedir. Ama bu aşk hikayesini yazan Trevanian'sa, beklenmedik bir anda okuyucuya darbesini mutlaka indirecektir ve netekim indirdi de.
Daha fazla ipucu vermek istemiyorum. Aksi takdirde okuyanların alnının çatına inecek darbe şiddetini yitirebilir :)

The narrator, Dr Jean-Marc Montjean is 45 as he speaks from August of 1938 in the Basque town of Salies-les-Bains, recalling his summer of 1914, just before the Great War started. As a recently qualified medic, he is taken on as an assistant in the town clinic, where he specializes in the discomforts associated with menopause. A young woman turns up at the clinic to request help for her twin brother who has fallen and hurt his shoulder, Montjean falls for her.
The mystery element of the novel soon imprints itself; why is the young woman’s family concealing themselves in a far flung corner of France, and why are the brother and father so determined Montjean shouldn’t spend time with Katya.
There is a lot to enjoy here, life is the small town, and a very compelling mystery. But the highlight for me is that the horse and cart trip the family and Montjean take to the village of Anos, up in the Pyrenees, where the Festival of the Drowned Virgin is celebrated. I believe the bridge, from which the virgin was tossed, is still in existence today.

I couldn't remember under what circumstance I had been recommended this book, and had not filled myself in with any details either, so I began reading without any expectations. Set in the comfortable Basque countryside in southern France, I had the feeling I was reading another tale of tragic romance, peppered with biting humour. But thriller, I never would have guessed.
Although there was a constant hinting at the peculiarness of the Trevilles' secrecy, the first hints at the wrongness of it is given almost 160 pages into this 280 pages book! And as Trevanian let young Dr. Jean-Marc Monjean deeper and deeper into the tale, things began to get disturbing. The experience was of a story being unwoven just as it was being woven, which gave me flashbacks from the movie 'Shutter Island', a little toned down but with the same effect.

This book was so good that I pushed through and finished reading it even though I had a migrane. The pacing was natural and the narration was good. The whole book leaves you anxious to find out what this big secret mystery is and when it unfolds it leaves you shocked. The way the secret unfolded also left me shocked and that ending was quite sad.

This book attracted me because of how precisely Trevaynian handles the relationship between Katya and her foolish young lover Jean-Marc. He is all emotion and hope, living for his first love, and she is vivacious but essentially cold; an unattainable joy. Much like Great Expectations, the theme might be that you start with an expectation that love conquers all, but end up learning that such romantics get flattened by the steamroller of feminine calculation.
As for plot, Jean-Marc bounces back and forth between his cheerful lecherous mentor who encourages him, and a bizarre triangle with Katya's twin brother who decidedly does not. The atmosphere seems to go from sun to gloom as he physically travels back and forth, and at every turn, more devious plot evolutions are revealed. At the end, a bizarre twist

Shibumi yi soluksuz okuduktan sonra bir Trevanian daha okumak istedim. Birbirinden son derece alakasız olsalar da yine soluksuz okunan bir kitap "Katya'nın Yazı". Shibumi bir casusluk romanı iken "Katya'nın Yazı" aşk ve dram.

Hiç bitmesin diye sonlarını yavaş okuduğum finaliyle insanı serseme çeviren bir kitap. Trevanian 'a bir kez daha hayranlık duymamak elde değil. O nasıl bir hayal gücü...

There was something magical about this book -- the phrasing, sentence composition, word choice -- I dont know, it just read different than any book I had read up to that point. I thoroughly enjoyed it and expect anyone would.

Delicious prose and engrossing characters, with a startling payoff for the reader who pushes through the seemingly dull first 100 pages. At once both literature and modern thriller. A thorough and well-deserved Five Stars.

The imagery of words are so powerful- that the visual before you stands out so clear. Trevanian is a master of words- woven so well that the reader finds this book difficult to put down.
