Stake is a modern-day vampire tale that follows the exploits of a teenage vampire hunter who missed growing up when vampires stole her formative years. Now, with the help of her ancient vampire mentor, she hunts those same vampires while sharing her life on social media.
Stake is a coming-of-age story featuring LGBTQ+ characters about a teenager who missed growing up when her new enemies stole her childhood.
When vampires announced their presence to the world by live streaming the murder of her friend Brock, Angel’s life changed forever. Three years later, she goes by the Internet moniker STAKE while she documents her quest to track down the vampires who killed one friend and sent another into a catatonic state. With the help of herancient vampire mentor Jessamy, Angel does it LIVE and unfiltered.
Angel is a punk teenager who watches her friend get killed by a vampire which is broadcast across the internet. Flash forward three years later, vampires are part of society and Angel is training to be a sanctioned vampire hunter as part of a government program. With her vampire partner, she's working vampire related cases. Angel's angsty, smart-ass attitude does wear thin after awhile. The book does have something of a True Blood vibe.
Almost feels like a spiritual successor to Angel/Buffy combined, and I mean that in the best way possible.
You have our main lead, Angel, who is basically in training on becoming a vampire detective. She learns and hunts down vampires who go off the rails, who become killers or commit crimes, and stops them with her partner who is a badass actual vampire, on the side of good. And this volume really focuses on the world building, that vampires are out in the open, and people have to learn to live with them.
Kind of reminding me of true blood in ways, but not as dirty or grimy. It feels fresh and clean with a more Angel type detective feel to it. Our main lead is spunky and curses like a sailor, but she also has a broken heart due to what happened in her past and what she deals with now.
I think there's a lot of great elements and good plotting. Some really neat twist, and the art if fantastic with some wonderful visuals and a cool way to do the coloring. The dialogue is solid throughout as well.
I'll admit Angel's nonchalant attitude and "fuck you, fuck them" mood does get tiring. It's not like there's not people like that, but to have a main lead like that, can get irritating. I also wasn't a huge fan of the flash boob part, just seemed gross.
But everything else worked for me and got me interested in this world. I'll be checking out more for sure.
Very enjoyable. Artwork is flat out brilliant; mostly black and white with limited color, but used to an amazing effect. Story is good, human girl hunting vampires to avenge the death of her friend, with the twist that she has a vampire partner and vamps are generally open and part of society. Feels a bit like a cop buddy movie, with the reckless main character who is always being threatened with being kicked off the force - just with vampires. Story and characters are good, but the artwork is the real draw here.
After witnessing Vampires murder her friend Brock online, Angel Beltran Stinson is out for blood. She's a Vampire Hunter influencer as she streams her hunts online. She works with her mentor Jessamy, a Vampire who helps her on her quest for revenge. Angel and Jessamy team up to avenge Brock and prevent vampires from killing innocent people.
The best part about Stake is the artwork. The coloring and the art is the best part of this series. For the most part, the series is in black & white, but often red, blue, and pink are shown throughout the panels. I think this series is worth picking up even if it's just to page through the book.
I felt that Stake has a lot of potential, but I felt there were certain points where I wasn't fully sure what was happening. It seemed like the first volume was trying to cram so much into it that parts of it fell apart.
While I liked reading Stake, I don't see myself continuing on in the series.
The artwork and inks are really what you show up for. Sadly, the rest leaves much to be desired. The plot is just a mess and cribs a lot of concepts from Marvel's Civil War event. Vampires have been exposed and are forced to register or...well...that's not really clear.
The protagonist is supposed to be a "hunter" but they dont actually kill unregistered vampires (despite cutting off their heads and limbs). At no point it it made clear how exactly the legislation or the hunter beureau works. But apparently she's a "loose cannon who plays by her own rules." So...I guess that makes her cool and edgy?
The main protagonist is also a big issue for me. Although her exact age isn't made clear, she's referred to as "kid" and "little girl" several times. She's coded very young in her dress and mannerisms, while at the same time being sexualized on a number of occasions within the first three issues I was able to finish. It's gross, no matter how you look at it.
In the end, it's just another very basic vampire hunter story. You've read it all before, and this offers nothing new of any real substance.
i wanted to like this more it is a buffy wana be for now with more swearing it also reminds me of true blood the show and not the books i will read the second volume i hope it gets better
This has got to be one of my favorite series is this year after Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Vol. 1. This was such a wild ride, my heart's still pounding from the action. And my mind is still whirling from the intrigue of Angel's (a.k.a Stake's,) world.
While Angel may not be the best role model, I can understand how her life went off the tracks after her best friend had an accident and is in a vegetative state, (after witnessing vampires kill a man in front of them.) That would send me on a revenge filled war path too.
The action scenes are beautifully drawn, the main fighter, and Angel's mentor and partner in stopping crime, Jessamy, is awesome at what she does, and looks dang good doing it. As stated, the art is gorgeous! The main body is black-and-white with pops of color making the pages come alive.
I love books that can make the supernatural feel so real, that if I walk out my door right now I could bump into a vampire on the street, that is what stake does for me. This is one series I am "staking" with till the bitter end!... okay, that's a lame pun, but the sentiment still stands.
I am highly looking forward to the next volume of Stake and any other comics made in her world.
