With the scars of her last case still fresh on her skin, DI Jamie Johansson is piecing together a puzzle that’s been buried for twenty years. It killed her father, and now she’s determined to finish what he started and expose the corruption threaded through every street of Stockholm.
When a series of violent incidents rock Jamie’s fragile existence in Sweden, she’s faced with a choice — drop the case, or have her loan to Stockholm Police terminated.
Jamie must let go of everything she once believed in, and call in all the favours she can to find a chink in the impenetrable armour of the shadowy Imperium Holdings. They aren’t above extortion, bribery, murder, or anything else. And they don’t like it when people ask questions. Jamie wouldn’t be the first determined detective they’ve silenced, but she may be the last.
From gritty, blood-soaked city streets to desolate and deadly frozen tundras, this case will take Jamie all across Scandinavia in pursuit of the men responsible for shattering her life. They thought they weakened her by prising her from the protection of the Stockholm Police, but really, they just cut the chain around her neck…
Jamie Johansson is out for blood. Old Blood. And she won’t stop until she gets it.
***
Old Blood is the hotly anticipated third instalment in the DI Jamie Johansson series. Angel Maker opened old wounds, Rising Tide stoked the first, and now Old Blood will settle a score that’s dogged Jamie for years. This tightly-wound Scandinavian thriller will sweep you off your feet and take you on a breathless thrill-ride that will be Jamie’s toughest outing yet.
Morgan Greene grew up in Wales, and works a copywriter, editor, and author. Morgan studied Creative Writing and English Literature at Swansea University with a focus on narrative structure and theory, and published the first crime novel in the Jamie Johansson series in 2020. Since its release, the series has gone on to reach bestseller status, with Detective Jamie Johansson quickly becoming a reader favourite.
The series blends classic Scandi-noir elements with modern and cinematic thriller writing to create a unique style that adds to the emerging Brit-noir genre. Jamie has many novels ahead of her, but Morgan is also working on a variety of other projects across crime, thriller, and mystery and plans to publish plenty more in 2022 and beyond.
First and foremost, a large thank you to Morgan Greene for providing me with a copy of this novel, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Picking up immediately after the last novel came to a screeching halt, Morgan Greene provides readers with an explosive continuation to this stunning series. DI Jamie Johansson has grown so much in the past two novels (as well as her prequel trilogy) that series fans can only wonder what she will do with some of the news she garnered while almost dying in the middle of the ocean. Greene writes so fluidly that it is hard to believe that he’s not Scandinavian himself. A chilling piece series fans have come to expect!
DI Jamie Johansson has so many questions after almost dying, many of them related to a powerful and secretive organisation that may be responsible for killing her father. As Johansson prepares her next move, she must come to terms that Imperium Holdings will stop at nothing to remain in the shadows, even if that means killing those who pose a risk.
Forced to take on a new partner, DI Johansson struggles with this, as well as the apparent suicide of her superior officer, something that stinks of Imperium intervention. While she appears indifferent, Johansson wants nothing more than to race out and pull back the curtain on this group.
After losing her position within Stockholm Polis, Johansson begins her covert mission, travelling to other parts of Scandinavia. She’s immediately targeted, but it only lights a new fire under her to get answers before she can be snuffed out as well. Working an angle in Norway, Johansson pairs up with some unlikely individuals to try getting to the core of the Imperium organisation. It is only then that Jamie Johansson learns how deep and wide the group has become and what secrets they hold in their possession.
I remember stumbling upon the first novel in the prequel series, hoping that Morgan Greene would be as talented an author as some of the early hype led me to believe. I could not get enough of Jamie Johansson, who was working within the Met, and I soon became addicted to the series. When things moved to Sweden, as newly-promoted DI Jamie Johansson was seconded while she looked into her father’s apparent suicide, I became even more obsessed and Morgan Greene was one of my newest favourite authors. His writing moves from being well-crafted police procedurals to ranking right up there with some of the great Scandinavian noir authors I have had the pleasure to read. This guy is the real deal for sure!
DI Jamie Johansson has come a long way in these three books (as well as the prequel trilogy), both on a personal and professional level. Her attention to detail is matched with a grittiness that will not permit her to ignore a lead. Able to hold her own, Johansson sometimes has a difficult time following direction, but it is usually because she is determined not to let evil win again. I can only imagine where this series will take her, or what else Greene has in store for his protagonist, but I am eager to be a part of the journey.
For those who have read a number of Scandinavian noir novels, especially those that have been translated, there is a sense of fluidity to the narrative. I often comment that I am baffled that the likes of Jo Nesbø, Søren and Lotte Hammer, and Jørn Lier Horst can write so easily in another language and have their translated work come across as smoothly. Greene follows in their footsteps, without the need for a translator, telling complex stories in plot-heavy novels and keeping the reader thoroughly captivated until the final page turn. Not only is the narrative strong, but there are great characters, a strong sense of forward momentum, and powerful story arcs that do not fizzle at the end of the novel. Greene can tell a story but always leave the reader thirsty for more, something that I have found since discovering his work in October 2020. This is one author worthy of putting on your radar, if you have not already.
Kudos, Mr. Greene, for another stunning novel. It’s only been a year, but I am eager to see what the next twelve months of reading your work will do to me!
DI Jamie Johansson has someone, or something, destroying her life. Starting twenty years ago with the murder of her father, this case has taken her through a puzzle it seems may never be solved. She has come close to dying herself, but she is determined to persevere through everything. She is a character I have come to love from her first book, a woman with a big heart, little fear and the smarts to take the fight to those who attempt to come against her. This third book in her trilogy starts right where the last book left off, with fast-paced action and amazing scenes. She has stumbled, sometimes badly, but refuses to give in to those ruining so many lives around her. This author writes fluidly, each scene bringing images to your mind and every word enhancing just what is happening at the time! If you enjoy a person determined to do what is right no matter what or who is up against her, grab this trilogy, you definitely can Not go wrong. I received an ARC from the author who I thank for such an engaging adventure, and I offer You my honest thoughts and feelings in this review.
This is the third book in the DI Jamie Johansson series (after the 3 book prequel series). In the last story Jamie and her Partner Anders Wiik had to fight for their lives on a oil drilling platform in the North Sea as the company was trying to cover up any and all wrongdoing. Their boss, Kriminalnspektör Ingrid Falk was told to have it resolved quietly by shadowy group Imperium Holdings who get their way by controlling a vast number of corrupt or blackmailed police, officials, anyone with any clout. She paid for her failure dearly as things ended far from quietly.
But Jamie now has 2 names to chase down in the quest to find her father’s killer - Imperium and Sandbech. Wiik is still recovering from his injuries and Jamie has been ordered by her new acting boss Thomas Karlsson to drop any investigation into Falk’s apparent suicide. But, again, things don’t go according to plan and Karlsson at least warns her to leave Sweden immediately. She heads to Finland where, after nearly being killed, she ends getting assistance from a surprising source. This enables her to stay safely off the radar.
Finally back in Sweden and staying in hiding she encounters a surprising group of allies. FBI Agent Beau Simpson and a handful of other operatives working on a Europol mission to bring down Imperium. Since this dovetails with Jamie’s goals they join forces.
Basing themselves in Noway, they learn that Imperium’s reach is far broader than anyone could have imagined and the task seems daunting. However, they get a tip about an upcoming event - a party for Imperium’s people and crash the soirée hoping to gather some intelligence.
It’s been a delight to watch Jamie Johansson grow and mature throughout these books. This time she had to learn to control her impulses and play the long game. Going at every problem like a bull at a gate is not always the best approach.
As with all the books, the pace was relentless and the action non-stop. This one raced to a very satisfying conclusion. There are three more published books and I cannot wait to read them but I must now return to my arcs. I can really recommend this series though, preferably starting with the 3 DS Jamie Johansson books based in England, to anyone who likes an action thriller!
I'm going to have to remember how to breathe after this book because it had me holding my breath the entire time.
It's rare that the final book in a trilogy is not only a fitting conclusion (for now), but also just as exciting as the previous two books, if not more.
Old Blood is a masterpiece. And I'm not saying this lightly. It's my favourite out of the three and I'm so blown away by everything that happened.
You can read it as a standalone, but it's so much better in order because you get to see what started it and how it all ties together as the series goes on.
I'm really exited to see where the story goes from here, and I can't wait to own the books physically.
P. S. Sandbech being from the Balkans is kind of...nice? I say this as a Balkan native, if we're going to be villains then we better be Sandbechs or I don't want it. He's really cool.
Lucky to escape with her life from her last case, DI Jamie Johansson continues her investigation into her father's murder. Now believing Imperium Holdings are responsible, she makes it her mission to bring them down. But Imperium's reach is far and wide. Who can she trust and who is on Imperium's payroll?
Set in Scandinavia, this is an amazing must-read series. The fact that I've rated every book five stars speaks volumes about the quality of writing and intricate plotlines. Jamie Johansson is a strong female lead character — she's independent, loyal and focused. With an overriding sense of justice she wont rest until her father's murderers are exposed. As with the previous two books, Old Blood is fast-paced and gripping. Atmospheric and full of twists and turns, it's a fabulous read. One of my favourite books this year.
Morgan Greene has done it yet again. Another fantastic read.
Picking up where Rising Tide finished Old Blood is super action packed. I found it super hard to put down and just had to know what was going to happen next.
I will always love Jamie (she fast became one of my favourites). It’s been so great seeing her grow and mature into the detective she is today across the series. I’m super excited to see what’s next for her. It was great seeing the return of other characters too (Wiik and Hallberg) as well as the introduction of new characters (still not sure how I feel about Simpson).
I can’t wait to see what Morgan comes up with next.
As always I highly recommend this series. (6 book series comprising of 2 trilogies)
Action-packed, page-turning, nail-biting crime series with a strong female lead.
Blurb: They took everything from her. Now she has nothing left to lose…

4.25⭐️ I feel perhaps I’ve been a little on the mean side with the score rating as it is my favourite and I gave Angel maker 4.25⭐️
#3 in the DI johansen series
I like that the title had a relevance to the storyline.
This book is linked to Rising tide so these 2 really need to be read in order. It is more of an action thriller police procedural fusion. This starts following the fall out of Rising Tide. Jamie feels under threat, she is desperate to protect Hallberg by keeping her out of the investigation. Wiik is on extended sick leave following his injuries on the rig. Wiik makes less of an appearance in this book, but still an important role. I loved the contrast between the low tech message on a card in the shop window and the high tech website for communication. This one is Jamie’s fight, and it’s personal.
Jamie is banished from Sweden to avoid being the next to be killed. She has gone rogue in an attempt to find her fathers killer. En route She ends up teamed up with FBI agent Simpson in an attempt to bring Imperium with its international connections down.
Fav quote ‘You’re not going to die like this. Not here. Not in a f**king Volkswagen’
The writing style feels concise, and has a good flow and pace. I like the use of a mini cliffhanger at the end of some chapters. There’s plenty of action, it kept my attention well. I feel there are a couple of plot points that could do with tightening up.
I feel this is a strong finish to the trilogy. I think there’s more emotion and feeling displayed in this book between the team which I like.
This book picks up where Rising Tide left off, dealing with the fallout. Jamie is still trying to find out who killed her father, after getting a name. However the apparent suicide of her boss in the opening chapters throws things. Wiik doesn't feature as much in this book, but when he does, it's lovely. There's a funny kind of warmth to their friendship despite them being grumpy and prickly. Jamie is trying to keep Hallberg out of the fight and goes off on her own. She teams up with an FBI agent, and his small team. The interactions between Simpson and Jamie are entertaining and provide various light hearted and funny moments. The action ramps up big style in this book and is just breathtaking. It doesn't stop for a single moment. At every single point Jamie, Simpson and the team are in grave danger. The writing is so well crafted that your fear is ramped up alongside them. A lot of loose ends are tied up here. The conclusions satisfying as they aren't always what you would expect. It is probably not going to be an enjoyable read without knowing the back story. You won't appreciate the nuances as much. Morgan has really come into his own here. The intricacies of the plot all work perfectly and it's one of those books where you are so absorbed the world around you disappears. A true credit to him and I cannot wait to see what he does next.
According to the author, this is the final book in this Jamie Johansson trilogy. The previous two, Angel Maker & Rising Tide could be read as standalones, this one can’t. There is too much back story that you need to be aware of. The story picks up shortly after Rising Tide finishes, Johansson has a new partner whilst Wiik is recuperating & she also finds herself working closely with an FBI officer & his small team. Jamie is continuing to fight corruption within the police & elsewhere; trying to find out who Imperium are & who they control. Opening with two shocking chapters, she pursues her unseen enemy relentlessly, gaining some lucky breaks along the way. When she meets up with the FBI officer, the pace racks up some more & ‘that’ scene at the party was so well written, it made me squirm. Again, this is a good old-fashioned thriller (I said the same about Rising Tide), plenty of pace, action & head-scratching at times. The author says in his notes that we’ll have a long wait to meet Jamie again. I hope not - a kick-ass heroine, with faults & foibles is just what we need. I loved it. Read it for yourself.
I really liked the first one, and, for personal reasons, just couldn't get through the second (why does my fear of drowning bother me while sitting here in a recliner reading....)
Like most of our MC these days, Jamie comes with a collection of issues, along with her, and her only, way of doing things. And the on-going collection of friends who often bring their own stories.
A lot is going on here, and if you like narrow escapes, car chases, impossible results, 'magic' then you will love this as there is action from beginning to end. I just found some of the 'scenes' and/or the 'endings' to certain situations just outside the realm of my belief.
I probably would have enjoyed this more if I'd waited a bit longer to read it - which of course makes no sense to anyone but me. Amazon gave me three months of Kindle Unlimited so picked up 2 and 3 under that deadline, which is approaching.
there are a few more in the series, and I'll keep my eye out for a cheap copy of 4, but not in a rush, just too much going in this one for my casual approach to following the story.
Just under a year ago I read Bare Skin, the first book in the DS Johansson Prequel Trilogy and already we are at the third book of the DI Johansson Trilogy. What a jounrey we have had. Right from reading Bare Skin I knoew we were on to a winner with a great character in the form of Johansso and a great writer in Morgan Greene. Old Blood is such a wonderful book and brings the series to a dramatic close. It reads well as a standalone but if you really want to immerse yourself in the characters I would recommend you start with the first book and read them in order. There is so much action, twists and turns that it will keep you reading and have your nerves on edge. I am certain the the author has much more for Johansson in future series or trilogy's and I cannot wait to find out what he comes up with next. Many thanks to the author for providing me with an advanced review copy of the book in return for a honest, unbiased review. 5 star book and a contender for one of my top 5 books of 2021
Jamie is apparently done with her quest to find her father's killer and stop the most dangerous and widespread corrupt organization in the world (Imperium) but Jamie is not finished with being a hero. According to the author, he is working on another trilogy about her which seems to be his MO when writing about Jamie. In this final book of the current trilogy, Jamie ends up working with the FBI and several European spy groups. She had to flee Sweden because her life was in danger; more importantly to her, her people were in danger by association. While she was in hiding, an FBI agent found her and convinced her to work with his team. But if you have read any of the other books about her you know she is not the best at following rules or taking orders. She relies upon her instinct which is nearly always on point. Needless to say, she is nearly killed several times in the book but she avoids killing even bad guys if she has any other choice (which she doesn't always). This book is a whirlwind thriller with guys more evil than most.
Really difficult to review and rate this book. The action and tension developed by the author were excellent and worthy of a higher rating. Where the overall story lets itself down for me is in the lack of credibility of the plot. The fall out from the Oil rig murder of "Rising Tide" where Jamie and Anders Wiik failed to cover up matters as requested is starting hit close to home. Already aware of the fact the Imperium Holdings the power behind the rig are ultimately responsible for he father's death she was unaware just hoe far the corruption goes until her boss dies in suspicious circumstances and Jamie is basically told leave Sweden or face the consequences. She of course decides to investigate in what appears to be a futile attempt to bring Imperium down. Well aware that this is a piece of fiction and that corrupt officials do exist, this conspiracy was just too big for me to swallow - for example: a) it appears that Imperium basically control the Stockholm police, putting people in charge who deliver their not well disguised messages b) as Jamie moves and hides in Finland and Norway it transpires that they control things there as well c) Imperium seem to be able to kill and plunder at will with no investigations / restrictions
If all that is not enough, in an attempt to stop Jamie coming off as a vigilante she approached by an FBI agent who is apparently part of an international task force trying to stop Imperium, but surprise surprise Jamie has most of the missing pieces and needs to bought into the investigation.
If I put aside my usual need for at least an attempt at realism the book is a good listen and I really like Jamie as a lead character. Interested to see how the series carries on in book 4.
Like the other books in this series, this was another cracking read. It's a book for tying up loose ends that were woven throughout the book.
It is so fast-paced as expected mainly due to the character of Jamie. I love her determination and her relationships with both Wiik and Hallberg. Wiik isn't in this book so much due to events from the previous book. It all starts with the apparent suicide of her boss and ends up with Jamie working with a new partner and team. What initially seemed to me to be a very wide-ranging story with the possibility of getting a bit bogged down and unwieldy, ended up as a fantastic read and all my initial doubts quickly faded away.
As I was coming to the end, I initially felt sad as it seemed like the end of an era. However, the end was quite fitting also and leaves me wanting more. Hurry up please with the next one!
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Oh I've missed Jamie Johansson! This is book 3 in the series by @morgangreeneauthor & it was as captivating as the previous 2 books!
✅️ thriller ✅️ tense ✅️ investigation ✅️ beautiful countries ✅️ book series ✅️ ✅️ woman on a mission
DI Jamie Johansson is still on the case of Imperium Holdings, only this time she can't be 100% sure who's on her side or not. After going on the run herself and hiding she's tracked down by the FBI to help in their investigation. What follows is an investigation into how far up the chain of command this thing goes, and if she's willing to go as far as they are and kill the enemies.
Kept on the case until the very last page of this novel & I can't leave it so long between books this time!
That was an excellent thriller! The third involving Jamie! She is still looking for her father's killer, but her Mission feels Impossible! Fast spaced novel, I could let my breath out only at the very end not having a clue at the conclusion! I have hardly slept, but that was worth it! I love Jamie's kicking character (literally!), her intrepid way to go for what she wants. She exhales however a calm that appeals to me, though completely in contrast with her experiences! I have read all books with her as a character, and she matures with each new novel. The author's books also get even better with each new creation. When I think about his young age (early twenties, if I correctly remember), I am really impressed! A great read! Thank you Morgan, for letting me (once again, I am so lucky!) read your gripping thriller as an ARC! I can't wait to meet Jamie again!
Finally have caught up to my present on Morgan Greene's DI Jamie Johansson it was very easy to do with several people coming into the fray, Sung-Sook teaching Jamie how to fight, Simon Heikkinen gave her the monies to leave Sweden, Sandbech who killed her father, the new Sandbech who kills everyone now for Imperium, Beau Simpson a FBI person from the U.S.A. working to get Imperium out of business. There's these stories and a lot of others that Morgan quotes from. It's a fun read that takes you through horrible gun shot wound. Also, Jamie puts on a dress and lipstick, and other sundry stuff and whines up at a Imperium ball. I'll let you read it because I would let the cat out of the bag. I recommend reading this story.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and finished it this evening. Old blood picks up perfectly from where the previous book Rising Tide left off and it reels you in immediately. I was really pleased to see previous characters returning and enjoyed their further development. For me Rising Tide was going to be hard to beat but Old Blood definitely lived up to my expectations and has to be one of the best books I have read this year, it's gritty, fast paced with a lot of action and a very very good ending, well done Morgan Greene, your best to date in my opinion, looking forward to many more books from you!
Of this ‘Trilogy’, Angel Maker and this book 5*, the second book is just… awful. I sincerely hope that if any readers tried that they were not put off the Author and have read on. Really Angel Maker and this book are a single long story that does all,the things well good books should. Would be too easy to give spoilers, suffice it to say you won’t be disappointed. My advice would be to miss out the second book entirely and save yourself the headache. Constructively, the only thing that is out of place is the constant f word, adjectives. It sits poorly with the character and is sloppy and tedious.
This series is a great read. Each book is memorable in its own right and it is very hard to pick a favorite. But, this may be my new favorite (and Angel Maker was brilliant). This is an edge of the seat thriller that does not disappoint. Jamie is as maverick as ever. She is on the run in hiding. She is under the radar and planning. She is alone and mostly out of the country/Sweden (first in Finland then Norway). The threats on Jamie's life are constant She needs help. New characters (and old) and new places (and old) are interweaved. More humour in this book despite the seriousness, dangers, and violence.
This was another cracking read from Morgan Greene following on from the first two books in this series. ALthough it was a bit disjointed and not really a crime novel I found it an excellent read full of suspense and action galore. The characters are great and the writing is superb. It's a proper page turner that will keep you up at night because it's difficult to put down.I wasn't sure how it would end but I think the author wrapped it all up well. I will definitely be reading more of this series.
Bit disappointed by the stretch of credulity in the plot lines to be honest, after enjoying previous episodes in this series. Almost like the author painted his plot into a corner and could not find a descent way out. Shame, and my summary would be "could have been better", either that or rewrite the last third of the previous book to bring down the bad guys in that one and expose the corruption in that volume and then just bin this one off!
So the big threat is a economy based on private ownership of business. So right wing villians are killing bribing extorting their way to riches. When that became apparent I decided to not even finish Old Blood. Some of us do actually prefer a market based free enterprise economy not some fascist left wing state control entity. I will read no more books by this author.
Loved it, fast paced and action filled. But, missing the small details that still annoy me, such as the Norwegian police is unarmed and they do not have a service gun, there are no castles in Norway and it would be illegal to have a large fence around the property like mentioned, to do with " allemannsretten" in Norway. Other than that, I love Jamie and Wiik, great partnership.
If you're looking for a book that will have you on the edge of your seat, then look no further. There is drama, twists and turns from start to finish. Morgan Greene is a fantastic writer and the way he has developed the character of Jamie Johansson has been amazing. Would definetly recommend his previous books.
LOVED this one!!!!:-). Soooo much action in this one!!! Such a unique and gorgeous setting and even though it’s beautiful…the layer upon layer of what Jamie is up against is literally terrifying!!! It’s like no one is safe!!! This one took my breath away and I am looking SOOO FORWARD to the next one!!:-). LOVED IT!!:-)
Really enjoyed this first trilogy for Jamie Johansson. The storylines are intricate and fast paced and very well written. Keeping you on the edge of your seat as the highly descriptive scenes unfold. Now that Jamie has, hopefully, dealt with Imperium once and for all, I look forward to seeing what adventures await her next.
