In this enchanting contemporary romance, sure to delight readers of Rachel Gibson and Susan Elizabeth Phillips, a close encounter of the sexy kind leads a plain Jane to discover her wild side.
Chloe Sinclair has never been bad . . . until she stumbles—literally—into the arms of a gorgeous stranger. To make matters worse, the morning after, her world is rocked completely off its axis when the sensual dreamboat turns out to be the man brought in to save the TV station where she works.
Sterling Prescott is hard-driven, gorgeous as hell, and determined to turn the struggling KTEX into a success. But all bets are off when the shameless wildcat that disappeared on him last night walks back into his life—acting like a squeaky-clean librarian. Life gets truly complicated, however, when Sterling decides to win more than the station—and to show Chloe that being sexy isn’t a sin.
Linda Francis Lee is a native Texan now calling New York City home. Linda's writing career began when her article "There Is No Finish Line" was published in her university's quarterly magazine. But she got sidetracked from writing when she started teaching probability and statistics. Later she found her way back to writing, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution called her breakout novel, Blue Waltz, "absolutely stunning." Now Linda is the author of nineteen books that are published in sixteen countries around the world, in languages as diverse as Japanese and Russian. Two of her most recent novels are in development for feature films, and she is in the process of co-developing a television series set in her beloved Texas. Lee's next novel, her twentieth, is a large work of fiction about the redemption of a man, and will be released in 2011. When Linda isn't writing, she loves to run in Central Park and spend time with her husband, family, and friends.
A sort of modern Cinderella story, only that Chloe in this role is not poor but poor minded. She never ever seems to understand what's about love and human relations, so she gets in perpetual trouble. Of course, someone is able to explain her the reality and marry the poor thing, but only after a lot of painful adventures, to herself and but also to the occasional readers...
I've been following this author on FB for a little while now, and she seems like a really nice and interesting person, so it pains me to say this, but: I really really do not like this book. At all. Like, it's fixin' to be a one star I-don't-ever-want-to-read-this-author-again bad. The writing is fine, that's not the problem. The problem is everything else: the characters, the plot, and the details. On the bright side, it's a pleasant and easy read, so no pain involved.
For my future reference: this is the story of how Sterling Prescott, head of Prescott Media (based in Indiana or Kansas or Missouri or some other place that's not Texas), and Chloe Sinclair, Station Manager of KTEX TV in El Paso, TX, get the hots for each other. This story could take place anywhere, so the location really isn't important.
I have developed a list of Things I Can't Stand About This Book Because They Are Totally Unbelievable. And I don't mean unbelievable as in: the heroine is a Plain Jane until she swipes on some mascara, and then becomes ravishing, or: the hero is tall dark and handsome with a granite-hard chest, or: the hero and heroine feel a TINGLE when they look at each other, or: the heroine and her two best friends grew up next door to each other and now JUST HAPPEN to all work at the same TV Station as owner, news anchor and station manager. Oh, no no no. It's a romance. I know to expect THIS level of ludicrous. It's everything else that I just cannot abide.
1. The heroine bumps into the hero and falls. Okay, in a regular romance, the heroic hero would catch her, so this is different. She falls. She scrapes up her knees and elbows. He walks her into the hotel where he ministers to her wounds. Now, I've fallen like that. It hurts. It hurts like hell!! It stings enough to bring involuntary tears to your eyes. Does our heroine give in to the pain? Oh no! She barely even discusses it. It's as if she stubbed her toe and then had a hangnail. She's all "oh touch me kiss me touch me kiss me." Uh, no. I was totally distracted by how much her scrapes must hurt.
2. They are completely unprofessional. Heroine arrives at work at 10 am! Barely in time for a meeting! Hero is supposed to be a big corporate raider, and HE impersonates someone else! Then heroine acts like a CHILD in the meeting. Some professionalism, PLEASE - she is supposed to be the Station Manager.
3. Part of the reason the heroine acts like a child is because she is blind-sided by the fact that the station owner, her purported best friend, invited a corporate raider to come on in and make his proposal to buy the station. What kind of boss OR best friend is this, that she doesn't say word boo about how company finances are shaky or that she's bringing in a consultant? She doesn't even bother to announce the meeting until late the evening before. That's bullshit. In the real world, management tells you about the finances of the company. And you get meeting invites at least a day in advance. And if your boss is a good boss, you know the meeting agenda. And if your friend is a good friend, you know if she's in financial trouble.
4. Hero fired the someone else because the guy was being too soft on companies they were taking over. Hero then proceeds to be too soft himself. You don't pull shit like that without being hit with a lawsuit. Furthermore, this makes him an ASSHOLE - he just fired his right hand man, just for nothing? Left the guy unemployed? And now he's off on a happy little romantic romp?
5. And, I'm sorry, he's the big deal owner of this company, he fires one guy, and he has no one else to replace him? He has to go down to El Paso himself??? What kind of rinky dink company is he running?
6. Their names. Good god their names. STERLING PRESCOTT??? TREY TANNER?????
7. Hero gets hot and heavy with heroine in the GYM. Right there in the middle of the weight machines and cardio equipment. Right. As if everyone else in the gym isn't staring.
8. Hero gets hot and heavy with heroine IN THE WORK LUNCHROOM. Helllo?????? Professionalism PLEASE???? This. Does. Not. Happen. In her office, maybe, after hours. In a back hall that no one uses, maybe. BUT NOT IN THE LUNCHROOM, NOT EVER.
9. The passage of time. For example ... heroine leaves work for a 6:30 gym class. Let's say class is a half hour (could be longer, but let's just say a half hour), so it's 7pm when hero arrives to ogle her. She works out for a bit. so let's say 7:15. She showers and heads home. At the earliest, she's getting home at 7:30. She has a pot of tea and a chat with her dad. She gets changed. At this point, no earlier than 8pm. She does chores - dusting, vacuuming, polishing, waxing (this is spelled out) - that's GOTTA take at least a good half hour, if not longer. So, 8:30pm. She heads outside, gets the mower, and mows the lawn. That's at least an hour. Then she does some yard work. At this point we're looking at 9:45pm, maybe 10pm. IT'S OCTOBER. There's no way the sun is still up!!!!! That really really bothered me.
10. The email exchanges between chapters are a cute device, but it really bothered me that each email had a different subject line. That's now how real people email. In real life, each email is "Not yet" and "re: Not yet" and "Re: re: Not yet" and so on. I even flipped back to check what year this was published, thinking maybe it was back before email was popular. Nope, 2004.
All that, and the hero is an asshole, too. A sexist asshole. Sexism is not sexy.
I'm left feeling like this a great author with a lot of potential, who just doesn't bother to research her stories first.
*
Sadly, at the halfway mark, this book just kept getting worse. There were two full pages of Hero's inner dialogue, all about how much he wants to fuck Heroine. There was nonsense about how he knows best. There was sexist claptrap. I'm not subjecting myself to more of the same, I'm done.
(3.5 stars) This is the second book that I have read by Linda Francis Lee and I'm very conflicted about what rating to give it - 3.5 stars (worth reading once, recommendable, check it out from the library) or 4 stars (will want to read it again, buy a copy of my own if I read a borrowed one). The other book was Looking for Lacey and it was really not a recommendable book, except for the side romance going on between the heroine's high school daughter and her classmate - that was literally the only thing that made the book worth reading.
"SEXY" SERIES Sinfully Sexy is Book 2 in Lee's "Sexy" Trilogy - it's preceded by Kate's story in Suddenly Sexy and followed by Julia and Ben's story in Simply Sexy. The three heroines are all coworkers at KTEX TV and have been friends since childhood.
SUMMARY (from back cover) Plain-Jane Chloe Sinclair has never been bad ... until she stumbles - literally - into the arms of a gorgeous stranger. To make matters worse, her world is rocked completely off its axis the morning after when the sensual dreamboat turns out to be the man brought in to save the TV station where she works.
Sterling Prescott is hard-driven, sexy as hell, and determined to take over the struggling KTEX TV. But all bets are off when the shameless wildcat who disappeared on him last night walks back into his life - acting like a squeaky-clean librarian. Life gets truly complicated, however, when Sterling decides to win more than the station - and to show her that being sexy isn't a sin.
CONS In Sinfully Sexy, there were a lot of things that were a mess - the story and plot were not "tight"; there were a lot of contrivances that were created solely for the author's character machinations; the whole last-minute-dating-show-that-will-miraculously-save-the-station-and-oh-what-a-surprise-there-are-some-twists-that-make-certain-characters-have-to-be-contestants was ... yeah, not much appreciated by this reader; the secondary kind-of-romance between Julia and Ben that sets us up for book 3 in the trilogy was annoying, felt very forced, and definitely did not make me inclined to read their story; Chloe's father was blah and the emotional scene and discussion at the end was far too corny and neatly-timed for me; ... and I could go on.
PROS *However*, Chloe was (for the most part - if one ignores some random weird spots here and there) a good heroine and Sterling was (also for the most part - if one ignores his too sudden realization of love and quick turnaround) a good hero. There were some great scenes between them that were very amusing, very enjoyable, and *very* chemically-charged. The interactions between him and his brother Ben were also nice additions.
NOTE When I had first read the summary of this book, I thought that Chloe and Sterling basically have a one-night stand with one another and then are surprised to find out the next day that the stranger they slept with last night is someone they're going to have to work with. Although that's where things are heading, they *do not* sleep with each other at the beginning of the book and when they finally do it is absolutely perfect and at the right time in their relationship and in the book/story.
RATING DECISION So basically it comes down to whether or not the good parts of the book outweigh the bad parts enough to warrant a 4-star rating instead of a 3.5-star one ... and after writing this review and being able to sum it all up for myself, I'm afraid to say that I'm going to have to go with 3.5 stars.
BOTTOM LINE The pros of this book make it definitely worth checking out from the library (which is what I did), but I would hold off on buying it - I know some people have really liked this book, so it could be me, but IMO it just doesn't warrant a spot on my keeper and/or reread shelves.
I liked this better than the first one. In here we see a transformation, and realistic character developments. Our heroine Chloe, whom we met at the first book of this series was always described as a china doll in physical appearance, and the words used by her grandmother are "plain, sensible, and smart" and all her life she grew up believing that "Men cheat, lie, and leave". She clearly has intimacy issues until she decides to take a plunge and do something reckless, something out of character like have sex with a stranger in a locked ladies' bathroom. Enter our hero Sterling Prescott, the alpha male, he's a little uptight, a workaholic and is used to having his way - pillage and conquer. The chemistry between the two is undeniable and the way their relationship and characters developed was excellently written. Family values never escape the story, there are a lot of witty arguments, and the email exchanges are fun. Humor, drama, love scenes and a peek behind the scenes of a small-time TV network. Definitely 5 stars!
In a moment that was completely foreign to Chloe Sinclair, she acted like a wild woman and made a move on a man she had just met. Regaining her senses, she fled. However Chloe didn't realize who the man was and when she finds herself sitting directly across from him in a conference room, things begin to unravel. Chloe call Sterling "Trey" Prescott out and his ruthless company who has a tendency to buy up companies struggling and then tears it apart.
Trey is there under an alias, little does anyone know at KTEX that he is Sterling Prescott. He knows Chloe is the woman from last night, however her appearance is completely different than the minx he met. The chemistry is not going away though and Trey can't stay away, now he just needs to get Chloe on board.
This was a fun romantic story. It did have where it goes into emails, which I found distracting with the flow of the story. Had some humorous moments.
Chloe Sinclair and Sterling Prescott met in an interesting and unusual manner. Unfortunately, as the book progressed, I was distracted by how the characters acted. Though the setting is modern-day El Paso, Texas, the characters, especially Sterling, acted asynchronously. Sterling's actions did not seem correct for a corporate raider. In fact, he seemed like a throwback to an idealized historical time. Also, I felt that Chloe acted in ways that didn't seem what a modern and independent woman would do. I was disappointed since the book did start out strongly.
I didn't like this one as much as the first one. I think Chloe got over her anger too quickly towards Sterling and the lie he had told. Not a bad read though :)
I actually liked this one better than the first, although, still not 4 stars. Getting closer though.
I guess it didn't get 4 stars because not only did it follow the standard romance formula, but it had the cliched "bet" thrown in. The one where one guy bets his buddy/brother/enemy that he can turn the class loser into the homecoming queen... okay, so it wasn't quite that bet, but the premise was the same.
Chloe, station manager at KTEX TV in El Paso, is seriously repressed. She was raised by her grandmother to believe that she was plain looking and that men would do nothing but leave.
Behold, in walks a stranger with whom she has an instant, flaming hot attraction.
I really liked Chloe, more than Kate (although I liked Kate) from the previous book, and I love the idea of love at first sight, so it was a fun book. Her back story, and Sterling's weren't as complicated as Kate's and Jesse's and I think that helped the pace a bit. The agnst wasn't as bad.
It seemed so short that I immediately started reading the third book rather that move on to something with more substance. Maybe I'll give up the brain candy after the next book.
This is my favorite installment in the Sexy trilogy. Kate, Chloe, and Julia are best friends, co-workers, and life-long neighbors. Each has a story and the author carries their friendship through each book, often with e-mails at the beginning of the chapters.
This is the second book in the Sexy trilogy. They are entertaining and quick reads. Each book has sexy men and women who really don't know who they are, but it is enjoyable finding out who they can be.
Chloe is repressed, there is just no other way to say it. Then one night she dresses up for an industry event and on her way into the hotel where it is being held, she falls and a beautiful stranger helps her to clean up her scraped knees and arms in the restroom on the main floor. Sparks fly and one thing leads to another and suddenly they are all over each other, that is until the janitor shows up with the keys and starts opening the door. Chloe flees and leaves the stranger to make the explanations.
The next day who should walk into the "we have one last chance to fix this station" meeting at the television station, but the stranger and his brother, Ben. Chloe is embarrassed and then furious, when she finds out that he is an employee of Prescott Media and is there to take-over that station. What Chloe doesn't know is that he is Sterling Prescott and she has some very unflattering things to say about him. Sterling bets his brother, Ben, that he can win Chloe over and turn a profit in a month and if he does, Ben has to give up his job as an undercover cop and join the family business.
One of the women in El Pescado's came up to Ben, leaning close, rubbing up against him, making him laugh. Clearly he knew her, since he slapped her butt and said he'd see her later.
"You call that charm?" Sterling asked as he raised an ominous brow. "I'm not sure that taking charm advice from you is going to get me anywhere. A bit like the blind leading the blind."
"Hey," Ben said with a laugh, "she wants me, doesn't she?"
"I suppose, but I really don't think a slap on the butt is going to get me far with Chloe Sinclair."
"You're probably right."
A long swallow of beer by both men ensued, each of them lost in thought.
"Okay," Ben announced, "go with that sensitive crap."
"What?"
"Women are always saying they want a sensitive guy. Maybe you should cry."
Sterling almost choked on his beer. "I am not going to cry."
Ben conceded defeat with an expression that said clearer than words that Sterling shouldn't come whining to him when he failed. "Then just look sad," Ben instructed. "Tell her some sad sack story about losing your teddy bear when you were five."
"I never had a teddy bear in my life."
"That's not the point."

LOL.
This is the second book by Linda Francis Lee that I've read. Sinfully Sexy was HILARIOUS at times (read excerpt above :D), but slow at others. This wouldn't count as an all-nighter, but it'd make a terrific beach read~ :)
The women of KTEX Julia Boudreaux station owner and her two best friends Kate Bloom, Anchorwoman and Chloe Sinclair, station manager. El Paso Texas will never be the same.
Sinfully Sexy (Sexy #2) – Chloe Sinclair has been told repeatedly that she is lucky to be plain and smart and she believes it to be true but she would love just once to be seen as sexy when she has to attend a benefit dinner in Julia’s stead she gets dressed to the nines and doesn’t look or act like herself when she literally runs into a hunky stranger. Sterling Prescott is everything Chloe despises or is he?
Going in I thought this was just going to be a light fluffy romantic escape. Which isn’t a bad thing. But while these are fun, sexy, romantic reads there is an underlying theme that deals with our self-image and how it is molded by our parents and out past. This phenomenon is not just restricted to women. I enjoyed these books.
This is the second in the trilogy of the story of three friends created by Linda Francis Lee and I enjoyed it immensely. I think the difference between this book and the first is that I related to Chloe. While she is very close to her friends, she is considered the smart, sensible one. Well, I should amend that by say she considers herself the smart, sensible one. She has put up a wall around her, even towards her friends, to protect her emotions. Then along comes this handsome man who turns her world around. It introduces a case of mistaken identity that adds a nice twist to this story. And don't worry about Chloe; she doesn't change herself for some man! She stays strong throughout the novel and doesn't change herself to be with this mystery man.
The two main characters are likable and engaging - it's easy to relate to Chloe, the female lead. A fun plot that includes mistaken identity, strong attraction, and friends met in the first book of the trilogy make this a solid read. There was one part, however, that made absolutely no sense, or rather it made sense only with a gigantic leap on the part of the reader. I had to re-read the page several (that's 5-7) times before I convinced myself that I was reading it correctly.
The good: Very cute, good chemistry between the leads, a fun plot overall.
The not-as-good: The ending spent a little too much time explaining everything that was wrong with the main character. Characters with low self-esteem are difficult to visualize since you have one person callling them unbelievable sexy and the character themselves saying their plain. Always leaves me a bit confused when imagining the them.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I didn't really like the first part "Suddenly Sexy" in terms of story, but the second was even worse. A "Bachelor"-Show where nothing really happens (no 'dates' or any other adventures were described), and the other contestants didn't really got a 'face'. Unfortuantely I already had this second and also the third part of this series, so I had to at least give it a try.
This is the 2nd book in the series and if you haven't read the first one I would start with it! If read in order they are great books! It truly is a wonderful series! This is my favorite in the serise! I love Chloe! She was my favortie character from the beginning of the series! I ove this book! The love story in this one is both funny and sweet! I think you will love it! :)
I like the book. The story of Chloe and Sterling. Her fears to let men come in into her life and the problems of Sterling known for his name and power and give up to his name for a month..... The book has romance, fears, and much more.
This is the second in this series about three friends who rely on each other as family. Chloe was raised to believe that all men..."lie, cheat and leave"...but she learned that was not true for all men. She had to open her closed heart to find the right man. Great book.
I really enjoyed this book! I read so much and so many storylines are predictable. This one kept giving me surprises. It was one of those rare delights where I'm reading along and thinking "how in the world can she wrap this up?". Excellent read!
Done within 5 hours. Page turner, really sexy, I can almost feel the heat coming from Chloe and Sterling, I love their story. Changing someone into becoming a better person is the best. The ending is very satisfying and it's overwhelming. GREAT NOVEL!
